Die alleinerziehende Mónica arbeitet als Sozialarbeiterin in MexikoStadt. Ihr Job ist es, obdachlosen, häufig drogenabhängigen Teenagern
zu helfen, von der Straße zu kommen. Ihr eigener Sohn Omar leidet
an einer degenerativen Augenkrankheit. Die Operation, die der 11-Jährige dringend benötigen würde, um nicht zu erblinden, scheint jedoch
außerhalb Mónicas Möglichkeiten zu liegen – zu hoch die Hürden des
bürokratischen Gesundheitssystems und zu dürftig ihre finanzielle Lage.
Eines Nachts liegt der obdachlose Benjamín, ein langjähriger Klient von
Mónica, zusammengeschlagen vor ihrer Tür. Da entscheidet sie sich für
eine extreme Lösung.
Während Victoria und Michel Franco in den frühen Szenen ihres Dramas das Leben der Obdachlosen in Mexiko-Stadt auf dokumentarische
Weise darstellen, lassen sie im weiteren Verlauf zunehmend Elemente
des klassischen Melodrams einfließen. Michel Franco arbeitete in der
Vergangenheit vorwiegend im fiktionalen Bereich und machte sich mit
Después de Lucía einen Namen. Für das dokufiktionale Drama A los ojos
kollaboriert er nun mit seiner Schwester, die zuvor Kurz- und Dokumentarfilme realisiert hat. A los ojos ist Victoria Francos Spielfilmdebüt
und feierte in einer längeren Schnittfassung bereits 2013 auf dem Morelia International Film Festival seine Premiere.

1983 geboren, studierte Franco Film- und Fernsehregie am Centro de
diseño, cine y televisión in Mexiko-Stadt. Seither hat sie mehrere Kurzund Dokumentarfilme verwirklicht. Aktuell schreibt sie ein Drehbuch für
einen neuen Spielfilm. A los ojos ist ihr Spielfilmdebüt.

Después de Lucía gewann 2012 den Preis Un Certain Regard beim Festival de Cannes. Sein jüngster Film Chronic wiederum war im Wettbewerb

Single mother Mónica works as a social social worker in Mexico City.
Her job is to help homeless and often drug-addicted teenagers to get off
the street. Her son Omar is suffering from a degenerative eye disease.
The operation that the 11-year-old really needs to save his sight is an
impossible dream for Mónica due to the health system's red tape and her
financial situation. One night, homeless junkie Benjamín who Mónica
worked with ends up in a beaten state outside her door. Mónica decides
to go for an extreme solution.
Victoria and Michel Franco depict the lives of the homeless in Mexico
City in documentary style for the film's early scenes, then feed more
elements of classic melodrama into it as the film progresses. Michel
Franco’s previous works were mainly fictional and he made his name
with After Lucy. For the documentary film Through the Eyes he has now
collaborated with his sister, who has previously made short films and
documentaries. Through the Eyes is Victoria Franco's feature film debut
and premiered in an extended cut version back in 2013 at the Morelia
International Film Festival.

Born 1983, Franco studied film and television directing at the Centro
de diseño, cine y televisión in Mexico City. Since then, she has made
several short and documentary films. She's currently writing a script for
a new feature film. Through the Eyes is her feature film debut.

Born 1979, Franco works as a director and producer. His film After Lucy
won the 2012 Un Certain Regard Award at the Festival de Cannes. His
most recent film Chronic was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at
the Cannes Film Festival, and won the Award for Best Screenplay.
