Gill studied architecture and worked as an architectural designer in
Midland, TX, Odessa, TX and also in the U.S. Marines.

1960-1961
Gill studied at the University of Texas, Austin, TX on a painting scholarship.

The Museum of Modern Art, New York purchased
a drawing (Girl in Striped Dress) of Gill, 1965
Gill was asked by the Navy to join the Navy Art Cooperation and Liaison
program, recording significant contemporary events for public display,
1966
Included in the Sao Paulo Biennal, 1967
Cover illustration of Alexander Solzhenitsyn by James Gill, TIME Magazine,
September 1968 – commissioned by the publisher, later acquired by the
National Portrait Gallery, Washington D.C.
