Partage Plus – Digitising and Enabling Art Nouveau for Europeana
Im Rahmen dieses EU-Projekts bearbeitet und digitalisiert das MAK ausgewählte Jugendstilobjekte, mit dem Ziel diese
über Europeana, eine multimediale Open Access-Datenbank, einer breiten Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen. Das MAK,
nebst anderen internationalen Museen, erhält damit die Möglichkeit seine wertvollen Bestände aus dieser Schaffensperiode – insbesondere Werke von KünstlerInnen der Wiener Werkstätte und der Secession – öffentlichkeitswirksam zu präsentieren. Auch zahlreiche Exponate der aktuellen Ausstellungen EIN SCHUSS RHYTHMUS UND FARBE sowie WIEN 1900
werden im Zuge dessen digitalisiert und bis 2014 online gestellt. (Partage Plus wird finanziert durch das EU-Programm zur
Unterstützung der Politik für Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien / Rahmenprogramm für Wettbewerbsfähigkeit und Innovation) This EU project is dedicated to the scholarly research and digitisation of selected Art Nouveau-era
objects, ultimately providing online access to the public via Europeana, a multi-media Open Access data base. The MAK,
alongside other international museums, thus has been offered a unique opportunity to publicize its valuable holdings
from this era, in particular works by artists from the Wiener Werkstätte and the Secession. Numerous objects presented in
the current exhibitions A ShOT Of RhyThM ANd COlOR and ViENNA 1900 will be digitised and published online until 2014.

English Textile design of the late 19th Century
Die Sammlung Textilien und Teppiche des MAK beherbergt einen
ungewöhnlich großen Bestand von zirka 900 englischen Textilien
und Tapeten der Zeit vor und um 1900. Diesen Textilien widmet
sich die Ausstellung und gibt zugleich Einblick in die kunsthandwerkliche Produktion anderer Materialien.
The Collection of Textiles and Carpets at the MAK is home to an
unusually large group of around 900 English textile and wallpaper
samples from the period before and around 1900. This exhibition
focuses on these textiles while also providing a look at contemporaneous arts and crafts output in other materials.
England war im 19. Jahrhundert nicht nur politisch und technologisch federführend, sondern forcierte auch die Entwicklung neuer
Formen für eigene Produktionen. Auf den englischen Einfluss geht
auch die Gründung des „k. k. Österreichischen Museums für Kunst
und Industrie“ in Wien, des heutigen MAK, zurück. Das Museum in
Wien sollte die heimische Produktion fördern und durch Schaffung
einer Vorbildersammlung das heimische Formenrepertoire
bereichern.
19th-century England was not just a political and technological
leader, but also drove forward the development of new forms for
its own products. The establishment of the “imperial Royal Austrian
Museum of Art and industry” in Vienna, today’s MAK, was a clear
demonstration of England’s influence. The museum in Vienna was
intended to encourage domestic production and enrich its formal
repertoire by compiling and showing a collection of models.
The increasing industrialization of 19th-century England saw
commensurate growth of the middle class. This market was served
via the mass production of affordable textiles, the stylistic sophistication of which increased considerably during the century’s
second half.
Mit zunehmender Industrialisierung wuchs während des 19. Jahrhunderts die englische Mittelschicht. Für diesen Markt wurden
leistbare Textilien in Massenproduktion produziert, deren Entwürfe
im Laufe der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts immer ambitionierter wurden.
Die im Jahr 1887 gegründete „Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society“
veranstaltete Präsentationen modernen Kunsthandwerks, an
denen auch die in der Ausstellung gezeigten Künstler wie William
Morris, Walter Crane oder Charles F. A. Voysey teilnahmen. Der
unter der Bezeichnung Arts and Crafts subsumierte Stil stellte eine
Reaktion auf die ästhetische und wirtschaftliche Entwicklung
englischer Produktion um die Jahrhundertmitte dar.
Das MAK erwarb bereits im späten 19. Jahrhundert zeitgenössische Textilien aus England, zahlreiche Bahnen wurden bereits
1899 gemeinsam mit zeitgenössischen belgischen, französischen
und italienischen Stoffen in einer Ausstellung präsentiert. Wiener
KünstlerInnen und KunsthandwerkerInnen, die in der Neuaufstellung der Schausammlung Wien 1900 prominent gezeigt werden,
konnten die innovativen Produkte des englischen Designs also
schon vor 1900 kennenlernen und sich inspirieren lassen.
Zeitgleich mit der Ausstellung wird die digitale Präsentation des
Gesamtbestands englischer Textilien und Tapeten des MAK vorgestellt. Sie bietet die Möglichkeit, die reiche Sammlung genauer
kennenzulernen und zu studieren. Die vielfältigen Muster dienen
auch als anregende Inspiration für unterschiedlichste Interessen
und Gelegenheiten.

The Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, founded in 1887, mounted
presentations of modern arts and crafts that saw the participation
of artists such as William Morris, Walter Crane and Charles f. A.
Voysey, whose works are also shown in this exhibition. The style
that was then subsumed under the term “Arts and Crafts” embodied
a reaction to the aesthetic and economic development of
mid-century English output.
The MAK acquired contemporary textiles from England in the late
19th century and presented numerous panels in an exhibition
together with contemporary examples from Belgium, france, and
italy as early as 1899. Viennese artists and tradespeople, as is
shown prominently in the new Vienna 1900 exhibit of the MAK
Permanent Collection, were thus given the opportunity to get
acquainted with and take inspiration from innovative, Englishdesigned products even prior to 1900.
This exhibition is accompanied by the launch of a database
presenting the MAK’s entire collection of English textiles and wallpaper. it offers the opportunity to become more familiar with and
study these rich holdings, and the varied patterns to be found
there can also serve as inspiration for a wide range of interests
and occasions.
