sowie junger und renommierter AbsolventInnen dieser legendären Institution.

„Die polnische Fotoszene boomt“ – darin sind sich die Kuratoren Krzysztof Candrowicz und
Jakub Swircz, die wir um zwei kurze State-ments gebeten haben, einig. Wir können diese
Aussage nur bestätigen, hatten doch Susanne Gamauf und Brigitte Konyen von der
Fotogalerie Wien im letzten Jahr die Gelegenheit während einer Studienreise die vibrierende
polnische Kunstszene kennenzulernen. „Goldgräberstimmung“, staunten sie. So entstand die
Idee, unsere neugewonnenen Kontakte – Galerien, Institutionen, Kuratoren – einzuladen,
polnische KünstlerInnen aus den Bereichen Fotografie und Neue Medien zum Monat der
Fotografie bei uns zu präsentieren. Wir baten darum, uns je eine/n KünstlerIn zu nennen,
der/die für sie eine wichtige Position in der gegenwärtigen polnischen Kunstszene einnimmt.
Unsere Ausstellung Recommended by… präsentiert nun das Ergebnis dieser inspirierenden
Zusammenarbeit:

Die polnische Fotografie ist nach wie vor auf der Suche nach ihrer Geschichte und Sprache. Vieles
geriet in Vergessenheit, viel Material wurde zerstört oder ging verloren. Die gegenwärtige Fotokunst in
Polen ist eine Carte Blanche; wir haben nun die Freiheit, künstlerische Arbeiten einzuordnen und offen
zu diskutieren.

Die letzten 20 Jahre waren in Polen von dramatischen Veränderungen geprägt: Der wirtschaftliche
und politische Wandel hat viele Aspekte des täglichen Lebens beeinflusst - die kulturelle Haltung und
das, was wir “the spirit”, “the soul” nennen, blieb jedoch davon unberührt. Im Gegensatz zum
polnischen Kino und Grafikdesign fand die Fotografie früher kaum internationale Beachtung. Heute
aber werden polnische FotokünstlerInnen in bedeutenden Museen und Galerien gezeigt und es gibt
große Fotofestivals wie das Photomonth Krakau oder das Fotofestiwal Łódź.. Einige der
talentiertesten und aufstrebendsten polnischen FotokünstlerInnen werden in der Ausstellung
Recommended by… in der Fotogalerie Wien gezeigt.

institution.
The collective of the FOTOGALERIE WIEN sincerly thanks the Polish Cultural Institute Vienna
for the support.
“The Polish photography scene is booming,” the two curators Krzysztof Candrowicz and
Jakub Swircz, whom we asked to contribute brief statements, agree. And we certainly concur,
after an opportunity to explore the vibrant Polish arts scene during a study trip last year. “Itʼs a
gold rush,” we marveled. Thatʼs when the idea was born to invite our freshly established
contacts—galleries, institutions, curators—to present Polish artists working in photography
and new media in Vienna during the Month of Photography. We asked them to each name one
artist who, in their view, occupies an important position in the contemporary Polish arts scene.
Our exhibition “Recommended by ...” presents the fruits of this inspiring collaboration:

Polish photography is still working to recover its history and its language. Much has been forgotten; a
great deal of material was destroyed or lost. Current art photography in Poland is a blank slate; we are
now free to place works of art in their proper contexts and have open debates about them. (Jakub

The past two decades in Poland have been a period of dramatic change: the economic and political
transformation has affected many aspects of everyday life—yet fundamental cultural attitudes and
what we call “the spirit,” “the soul,” have remained untouched. Unlike Polish cinema and graphic
design, the countryʼs photography used to draw very little international attention. Today, by contrast,
Polish photography artists show their work in prominent museums and galleries, and there are major
photography festivals such as Cracowʼs Photomonth and the Fotofestiwal in Łódz ́. Some of the most
talented and up-and-coming Polish photography artists are presented in the exhibition “Recommended
