1.a) Road infrastructure and environment will hardly be able to bear
future cargo volumes without significant adverse affects
Road cargo is significantly growing.
As a consequence, there is massive threat of gridlocks
in upcoming years.
Societies face extremely high external costs caused by
this unhealthy trend.
73% of road cargo is processed by means of „semi‐
trailers“ *‐ the vast majority of which cannot use rail
as a route of transport due to the fact that they are
not furnished with necessary special and costly
equipment.
There is obviously a strong need to find solutions which contribute to the reduction of CO2 and “SMOG” pollution, the avoidance of further traffic congestions and accidents, that will provide major savings in highway build and maintenance costs but simultaneously ensure secure and sustainable availability of efficient and hiqh quality transport solutions.

1.b) CargoBeamer is compatible to 100% of semi‐trailers , providing a maximum of flexibility for end customers and operators
CargoBeamer technology incorporates a universal semi‐trailer loading palette.
All road semi‐trailers fit onto these palettes – at once, without any modifications.
CargoBeamer thus removes incompatibility between rail wagons and road semi‐trailers.
… and road meets rail.

1.b) However, in addition, CargoBeamer is compatible to existing infrastructure
The CargoBeamer semi‐trailer palette can be lifted with container cranes (left picture ) or so called "Reach Stacker" (right picture) enabling all standard “non‐liftable” semi‐trailers to be transported on rail.
Therefore, immediate operation in all existing conventional rail/road terminals is possible, too.

Inbound logistics from France / southwest Germany into Wolfsburg
• CargoBeamer terminal in the Volkswagen main plant in Wolfsburg
• The automated terminal has a capacity of 25,000 moves / year.
• It is operational every day since July 2013 – without distortions or disruptions.

99,89% Due to the success of the pilot project, VW and CargoBeamer plan to significantly increase transport volumes. Parties are currently liasing with regards to
− the identification of meaningful VW main logistic routes (i.e. Bratislava‐Wolfsburg) with sufficient volumes
− relocate the VW terminal outside of the VW plant Wolfsburg and increase number of automated gate moduls
− upon the request of CargoBeamer, consign the relation transfer order to a major automotive logistics service
provider but thereby postulating CargoBeamer rail cargo servicer

1.b) Pilot transport route #2: CargoBeamer Alpin – connection
Germany – Italy via Switzerland (Gotthard) started mid April 2015
2015/2016:
3 roundtrips / week
29 semi‐trailers per train (550m)
2017e:
5‐6 roundtrips / week
up to 34 semi‐trailers per train (680m)
CB clients have strongly demanded to increase
frequency of service to 5‐6 roundtrips per week (i.e. daily departures). As a consequence, both the degree
of capacity utilization and pricing will rise and thus, already now deliver positive profit contributions at CB‘s first commercially operated CB Alpin route.

1.e) Motivation and background: Negative trend for rail freight
Modal split in China and in Germany and overall Europe show identical negative trends ?
?
• The environmentally friendly rail cargo transportation suffers from growth obstacles, which are very similar in China and in Europe. 29
© 2016 CargoBeamer
1.e) Current growth obstacles for rail freight
1. Inflexibility of rail cargo distribution
•
Inflexibility on the last mile ‐ missing rail connection to production sites, retail warehouses, end consumers
•
Lack of local, distributed rail cargo road/rail loading terminals
•
Lack of ability for short notice on‐the‐spot transports
2. Incompatibility between rail wagon technology and road semi‐trailer
3. High cost per load unit on short and medium distances
4. Inferior transport timing on short and medium distances •
Long duration of loading / unloading to rail cargo wagons
5. Complexity of transport chains
30
•
High land space requirements and financial investments for rail cargo terminals
•
Different rail gauge domains China / Russia, Kazachstan / Europe
•
Different traction energy, signalling and train control systems

− CargoBeamer provides full flexibility for all truck types
− CargoBeamer provides maximum flexibility for freight village design
− CargoBeamer enables high efficient urban distribution nodes 31

1.e) The CargoBeamer loading palette allows for rail transportation of most semi‐trailers, coal trailers and smaller
• High variety of semi‐trailer types, large number of Chinese manufacturers
• Load weights up to 70 tons* are feasible Standard palette, EU, for load weight up to 37t
*palette design needs to be modified for higher loads
32

1.e) Maximum flexibility for freight village design –
compact terminals, combination of vertical & horizontal loading • Very compact combination of automated horizontal loading with CargoBeamer plus vertical loading via rubber‐tyred gantry crane yields maximum flexibility, throughput & robustness
• Combination of CBoXX unloading land boosts performance for eCommerce warehousing

1.e) Today, rail cargo on New Silk Road is segmented into fourteen transport steps, each with a high amount of manual work and long durations Tedious manual loading procedure
• Loading of goods into sea containers works via the aft steel door only ‐ a time consuming manual process.
• The usage of automated, robot‐based procedures is not feasible.
Very complex eCommerce ‐ transport chain from China to Europe
From production in China to end customer in Europe, each container needs to be manually loaded and re‐
loaded four times using gantry cranes between five different cargo vessels and manually unloaded. 36
