We look at the music that defined the ambitions of Germany, a new consciousness in Poland and the U.S., and the aspiring nationalism of the Jews of Europe and North America. 1. The People Jehovah, Lord God, the Blessed, God of Israel, has delivered His people! The Eternal, the only God, before whom no other can stand, and all of heaven is His throne! Through sea and desert He has led us! He has gone with us in clouds and fire! All His people safely marched day and night! Now all His enemies are perished, scattered as dust before His mighty arm! He shall reign as King forever! 2. The Angel of the Lord Moses, servant of God, behold, you now stand on Sinai, led here by the Lord, who with outstretched arm brought you forth from Pharaoh’s hand and yoke, and led His people through the desert here, where He dwells upon His holy mountain. Now darkness falls gently over the hills, up in the heavens star after star rises, and He, who created the heavenly host, 3 er, der sie kennet und mit Namen nennet, er ist nicht fern von jedem unter euch! Du gehst an seiner Hand! He, who knows each of them and names them, He is not far from every one of you! You rest on the mountain, tribe with tribe, feel His presence in the gentle night breeze, like the rustle of an eagle’s wing. O chosen people, liberated by God, be happy! Put yourself in His hands! Already the aim of your wanderings is nigh, the holy promised Land! 3. 3. Moses Up, out of your tents, all who follow the Lord, people and princes, small and great, the whole glad congregation! Everywhere, in dreary solitude, the silent grave of worldly desire, the desert; with eternal solemnity rise Horeb’s ancient stones, raise your heads to the towering mountain! Yet let no one’s heart sink, God descends from his holy height. Glory! Glory to Him who redeemed us, eternal glory now and forever! Reach for the harp, the psaltery and the clear, sweet cymbals! Let the sound of the trumpets ring forth with power through your choirs, so that the Lord will hear our prayer! 4 4. 4. Song of Praise Moses, The People Lord God, You are our refuge forever! Before the mountains were there, and before the earth and sea were created, You existed, God, from eternity to eternity! Aaron You suffer the people to die, and say: return again, my children. Herr, Gott! Du bist unsre Zuflucht für und für!! Aaron, Moses, The People For a thousand years to You are but a passing day and a night’s watch! You spread the darkness, the pillars of heaven shake and are fearful of Your wrath! You look upon the earth, and it trembles! You touch the mountains, and they smoke! The voice of the Lord is mighty! The God of glory thunders! The voice of the Lord is glorious! The voice of the Lord shatters the cedars, They spurt forth like flames! But the Lord is gracious and merciful and full of goodness and truth! Lord God, You are our refuge forever! Before the mountains were there, You, God, existed from eternity to eternity! 5. 5. The Angel of the Lord Moses, thus says the Lord: you shall be my chosen people, and in a cloud shall I come to you on the mountain, that all the people shall hear the words that I shall speak to you, and believe them forever! Prepare yourself and go into the darkness, for there shall God be. If you now follow His voice, before all nations you shall belong to Him! Go, all of you, and purify yourselves for the Lord, for soon he shall come down to Sinai! Set borders around the mountain, and be mindful, lest you are destroyed by the heat of his wrath! The place where you stand is holy ground. Moses So, Aaron, care for the people in my stead, and teach them the way of the Lord. Aaron O Moses, we will do as the Lord commands! Go up and meet Him, we will stay here. I pledge on my very soul to you, that I will guide the people and be their leader, and that His ways will be followed; let their blood be on my hands, if we should forget the Lord, God forbid! Moses I now go to meet the Lord, that He may tell me the words that you shall keep. Already you see that dark clouds surround Him; from His abode the thunder rolls, and trumpets sound with power! 6. 6. The People He ascends. The clouds already hide Him. No one can see Him anymore! How we shudder! Trembling, we look at Him. I will dwell in darkness, says the Lord. Hark, the sound of the trumpet! The earth shakes! Bow down! I will dwell in darkness, says the Lord. 7. The People O Lord, so long have we waited in vain, 7 Hüter, früh und spät, ängstlich harren wir! Forty days ago he was swallowed by the darkness, clouds surrounded him, all trace gone! In Egypt we had plenty of meat! How we drew up cool water from the clear wells to our hot lips! The fear of death falls upon us! O would to God that we were back there! Long since dead and decayed! Has he left us? Has he betrayed us? Is the light upon us already put out forever? Man of God, Moses, where are you? The echoes answer in vain! Ah! Ha! Who is the Lord, that we must obey His voice? Jehovah and his servant, who are they? Let’s free ourselves from their bonds, and cast their chains away! Get up! And let us make our own gods, who can lead ahead of us! For we do not know what has happened to this man Moses, who brought us out of Egypt! 8. Aaron Israel, schicke dich! 8. Aaron Israel, resign yourself! Why do you test the Lord? Did the Lord nourish and raise children, that they should fall away from him? 8 Das Volk Schweig’ du, geschweig’! Steck deinen Mund in Staub! Auf! Mach’ uns Götter! Götter, die wir sehen! The People Silence, you, be quiet! Fill your mouth with dust! Up! Make gods for us, gods that we can see! Aaron How could I commit so great an evil, and sin against the Lord, my God? Instead of Moses I lead you back and forth, O Israel, what do you ask of me? Stiff-necked race, perverted ways! Alas, that I must live with such wickedness! Oh, if I were in my youth, when God’s light shown on my head, and by that light I went into the dark, and his mystery was around my hut! Woe to him who abominates and despises the Lord! My eyes weep to the Lord, I cannot do it! The People The gods do what they like to us, find a way! If you do not, you’ll die by our hand! Aaron Genug! Aaron Enough! You want me to share your zeal! Dishonorable ones, go on, I give in to you! 9 Gebt her! Give it here! Rip the gold from your bodies, chains, bracelets, and jeweled rings from the necks and hands of your vain women! Throw it in the hellish smelter, I’ll heat it for you. Aaron, woe to me! Das Volk Gebt ihm Gold, gebt ihm Geschmeide! Her, daher! Mit vollen Händen bringt Ägyptens letzte Beute! Götter, will er machen, bessere Götter als Jehova! Seht! The People Give him gold, give him jewels! Here, over here! Bring the last booty of Egypt with full hands! He’ll make gods, better ones than Jehovah! Look! He is forming the sacred calf! That, that is your god, Israel, that led you from the land of Egypt! A feast, we will celebrate a feast, wear garlands before they wither! Dance, play, dance, play, so that everyone may know how merry we have become since we defied Jehovah! 9. Mose Abtrünnige, kam es dahin mit euch? Ewige Schande! Ewige Schmach! Moses Apostates, has this come to pass with you? Eternal shame! Eternal disgrace! I will smash these, shatter them right now, these tablets written with the finger of God! “Thou shalt have no gods before me!” But He will surely destroy you Himself, 10 des Eifer wie ein fressend Feuer ist! Unselige! Unselige! whose zeal is like a consuming fire! It rises up already, like the smoke of a furnace! Do you hear the thunder of God’s wrath? Unholy! Unholy! Aaron Weh! Meine Sündenkommen über mich! Aaron Ah! My sin overwhelms me! The People Wait, let’s go see , who is that who roars so? Ah! My sin overwhelms me! Who can resist the discipline of the Almighty? Moses Have you forgotten His deed, the miracles he has given you? He divided the sea and let you pass through, and made the waters to stand like a wall. By day He guided you with a cloud, by night with a bright night! He rent the rocks in the desert and gave you water to drink until you were full. He gave you Manna when you were hungry, you were fed with the bread of heaven; but you have not kept His covenant. You have not changed with the law of the Lord! 11 Mose, Aaron Her, her zum Herrn, wer ihm noch angehört! Moses, Aaron Here, come here to the Lord, those who still obey! The People Poch nicht so hoch auf deine Macht, Tyrann! Wir trotzen dir! Vertilgt die Rotte! Würgt die Frevler hin! The People Don’t sit so high on your power, tyrant! We defy you! Destroy the traitors! Strangle the wrong-doers! 10. The Scouts Oh joy, we succeeded, happy day! What Moses ordered has come to pass, we broke through, we found the path to the holy land, from dark forests we peered out onto smiling meadows, rich with springs. And though the sons of Enak loomed around, reckless warriors, wild and bold, we defied their defiance even more bravely; do not let your courage fail you! Like these grapes from the brook of Eschol, we will pluck the palms of victory! Land of desire, land of dreams, land where the golden seeds ripen! Yes, with intoxicated eyes we already wander over you, Canaan! 11. Moses The messengers I sent have come home! Hear how their jubilant song glorifies the Lord! But you are not worthy of the promised land. I still hear the shriek of your singing and dancing around your altar of shame! And even my friend 17 dem ich vertraute mich, mein Nächster und mein Bruder ward mir fremd! I trusted, my nearest and my brother, was a stranger to me! What did these people do to you, that you brought them to be sinners? 12. Aaron I go to the gates of hell, and must behold the rod of his wrath! We are withered like dry leaves, blasted like the wind by our sin! Deep is the damage, deeper than the sea, our guilt is great unto heaven, a sword pierces even into our souls! Hear me, Moses, that God may hear you again! Hear me, Moses, hear me! Help us find mercy from the Lord. Give us life, for we are but slaves! Support the orphans’ cause, the poor, ignorant crowd that knows nothing! Will His wrath fume over us forever, is there no remedy or healer there? Aaron, The People Help us find mercy from the Lord! Ah, lead us home to the land where milk and honey flow! The People Listen to the thundering clarions! Amalek in red garb breaks through with his thousands to surround every canyon! Aaron Be comforted, my good people, do not pale, today we atone for our guilt with blood! Cast the shame of sin behind you! Up! For the Lord and Canaan! Ride up with the wings of eagles! Oh Moses, come back! Lead us again, lead us to victory! 13. Mose, Das Volk Stoßet in die Halldrommeten! Werft Panier auf, Juda’s Löwen! 13. Moses, The People Blow the thundering trumpets! Raise banners, lions of Judah! Moses Like the torrents of mountain streams, tumble down on Amalek! Like the blaze that rages in the forest, so that the treetops glow like embers, strike them, Lord, with lightning! See, with thousands of angels the Lord comes, the heavenly host rallies around your head! Der Engel des Herrn Mose, auf! Ersteig’ die Höhe, nimm den Stab, breit’ aus die Arme, im Gebet um Sieg zu flehen, ohne Ermüden, ohne Ermatten, The Angel of the Lord Moses, up! Climb the heights, take your staff, spread your arms and pray for victory without fatigue or languor, 19 denn schier an ein grässliche Ringen geht’s im Blachfeld bis zum Abend, Amalek wird keinen schonen, Israel kämpft um sein Leben! Aber wahrlich, ihr sollt siegen! for a grim struggle drags on until evening. Amalek will spare no one, Israel fights for its life! But verily, you will be victorious! The Angel, The People For God the Most High is with you, the trumpets of your kings! He, who stills the roaring of the sea, also quenches the raging of nations. The People Look! The Lord comes with thousands of angels! With flames, thunderbolts, and hail, He comes! The Lord and His ferocity is with us! 14. The Angel of the Lord Hear, Moses, what the Lord has decided: Behold, the time has come when you must die and sleep with your fathers. Go to the Abarim Mountains, to Mount Nebo, which lies in the land of Moab, and see the land that I will give to the children of Israel for their own, and when you have done so, die on this mountain and be gathered to your people, as when your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor 20 zu seinem Volk sich sammelte. Ein getröstet Elend schließt dein Lauf! and was gathered to his people. For you shall see the land that I give to the children of Israel, but you shall not enter it! Soon you will come to the grave. Gather to you the pious people, sheaves, dedicated to the Lord, and He will lead you to a new age! The land that He promised to you opens to your sight once more, a holy pilgrimage is not lost! A solacing misery ends your course. 15. 15. Moses You are the Lord, I have nothing to say but one thing: I am ready! I see the day dawn over Canaan; let me depart, you know my time! I was a guest and a pilgrim like my whole race, I was a fleeting shadow, but your laws are eternal Lord my God, my pilgrim’s song! 16. The People From desert sand now into mountains, who is stopped by the steep mountain trails? From a thousand foreheads pearls of sweat. Barely resting, we are almost there! The dawn comes already, O Canaan! In the mountain air we smell it 21 wie Gotteshauch und Morgenluft weht’s niederwärts vom Nebo’s Höh, hinauf den letzten Stieg! Wir sind am Ziel! O Kanaan, ersehntes, verheiß’nes heiliges Land Kanaan! Erträumtes, vielbeträntes Geschenk aus Gottes Hand. Kanaan! Fallt auf die Knie! Verwehen muss tausendfaches Leid! Die Augen übergehen von deiner Herrlichkeit, Kanaan! as if it were the breath of God, and the morning breeze blows down from Nebo. Up the last slope! We have arrived! Oh Canaan, long desired promised land of Canaan! Something dreamed, wept for, gift from the hand of God. Canaan! Fall on your knees! A thousand sorrows must drift away. Our eyes overflow from your glory, Canaan! 17. Schau Israel, dies Segensland! In Frieden wohnst du ruhesam; O mehre dich und wachse groß, mein Volk, viel tausend Mal! 17. Moses Blessed are You, God of my fathers, that with my own eyes I see this land, this great land! Now I may go with joy! Joshua, take my staff! You shall now be ruler of the army of the Lord! Lead them with Caleb into Jordan! See how the land is blessed by the Lord! How lovely your tents are, Israel! How wide your brooks, The blossoming gardens planted by God! God opens his great treasure! See, Israel, this blessed land! Live quietly in peace: multiply and grow great, my people, many thousand times! 22 18. Heil! 19. The Lament of the People for Moses Those who walked the right path with him come to peace and rest in their homes. A prince and great man fell on this day in Israel, and henceforth no prophet like Moses will rise among the people, Moses, who saw God face to face! Those who walked the right path with him come to peace and rest in their homes. A prince and great man fell on this day in Israel, His spirit dwells in us two-fold forever in eternal youth! Hail! Into Jordan we pass freely, Into the land that was promised to us. Hail! Translation: Emil Y. Inteeworn 23 © 2014 American Symphony Orchestra 24
