Could this be the same child as the "Catharina" born in 1830? I cannot find a death entry for that child,
nor a birth entry for this one!

and _____ Dyck, and the granddaughter of Dietrich Epp & Maria Unger. However, the birth
years of the "grandparents" make this impossible. Could Cornelius be an uncle? She was
raised at the Razien Forstei. Married Franz Janzen (1870-1915), Johan Penner (1862-1933)

vii Abram Epp, * 1881. Er heiratete Anna Goertzen.

177. Anna Bergmann, * 4 Jan 1762 in Rosenort, Gross Werder, Prussia, † 15 Nov 1796 in Chortitza Colony,
South Russia. BH Unruh says she was born in Blumenort, Prussia on 10 Jan 1762. Another record says
she was from Rosenort, Prussia. One family record says she was born 16 Jan (n.s.) and died 15 Dec.
The Nick J. Harder submission says she was born 1 Jan 1762. The Robert Cornies submission says she
died 3 Dec 1796. Henry Schapansky says she was born 16 Jan 1752. The date of death shown here (15
Nov 1796) precedes her youngest daughter's birth. Johann Epp puts her as: Bergmann or Bargmann. Sie
heiratete (1) David Epp, Heirat 17 Jul 1780 in Prussia, * 15 Jun 1750 in Rosenort, Gross Werder,

178. Heinrich Thiessen, * 1 Oct 1755 in Walldorf, Gross Werder, Prussia, † 3 May 1838 in Chortitza,
Chortitza, South Russia. He migrated to Russia from Walldorf, Prussia in 1804 (B. H. Unruh, 352; P.
Rempel, p. 86). He is not listed in the 1808 Molotschna Colony Census or in the Oct 1816 Chortitza
Colony Census. David Epp's diary entry states that he died on 3 May 1838 at the age of 82 years, 7
months, and 2 days after a 9 week illness. This would suggest that he was born 1 Oct 1755 (Old
Style) or 12 Oct 1755 (New Style). The diary indicates that he had 10 children, 2 of whom were alive
in 1838 and that he had 30 grandchildren, 22 of whom were alive in 1838. Katie Peters's book
"Genealogy of Heinrich Thiessen" on p. 6 says was born 1 Oct 1755. One source says he died 4 Jul
1838, which is likely incorrect. B. H. Unruh, on p. 352, says he was born in 1759, which is likely
incorrect.
Heinrich and Maria Thiessen came to the Molotschna settlement in 1804 but decided to go to the
Chortitza colony and settled in Ekaterinoslav. Their two oldest children, Dietrich and Catharina,

1808 Molotschna Colony Census he is listed at Tiegenhagen #4 as a friend of Isebrandt
Friesen (b. ca 1773) #45148. The 1835 Census entry for Altonau #22 lists his widow and
daughters, and says he transferred to Altonau from Halbstadt in 1827 and died in 1831.
However, the 1835 Census entry for Halbstadt #32 says that he transferred to Altonau in
1817. Er heiratete Elisabeth _____, Heirat Abt 1807.

iii Maria Thiessen, * 1791.
iv Heinrich Thiessen, * 12 Aug 1794, † 28 Sep 1859. In 1817 he moved from Chortitza,
Chortitza Colony to the city of Ekaterinoslav where he was a miller in 1852 per the 1852
List of People Living Outside the Chortitza Colony. In the 1850 Chortitza Colony Census
he was listed at Chortitza #42 with his family, however. In 1852 he owned 2 treadmills, a
vinegar brewery, and a home in Ekaterinoslav. He reportedly lived in Schoenau,
Molotschna Colony at one time as well. Claassen and the diary of Jacob Niebuhr (b. 4 May
1862) gives a death date of 28 Feb 1859. Er heiratete Margaretha Siemens, Heirat 24 Jul

vii Anna Thiessen, * 1803 in Prussia.
179. Maria Woelk, * 1767 in Walldorf, Gross Werder, Prussia, † 30 Mar 1833 in South Russia. David Epp's
diary entry for her husband Heinrich Thiessen states that when he died on 3 May 1838 that he had been
a widower for 5 years and 3 months and that he had been married for 48 years and 28 days. This would
suggest that Maria Woelk died about 3 Feb 1833 rather than 30 Mar 1833.
180. Peter Siemens, * 16 Apr 1765 in Marienburg, Prussia, † 1 Dec 1847 in Chortitza Colony, South Russia.
In the 1795 Chortitza Colony Census he is listed as a recent Flemish Mennonite immigrant residing on
a temporary basis in Schoenwiese (B. H. Unruh, p. 244). He is listed in the 1797 Census, but not in a
specific village (P. Rempel, p. 56). In the 1801 Chortitza Colony Census he is listed at Chortitza #8. In
the 1806 Census he is listed in Chortitza (P. Rempel, p. 6). In the Oct 1816 Census he is listed at
Chortitza #6. He also owned a second homestead at Chortitza #38 in 1814 and 1816. He was the
Oberschulze of the Chortitza Colony from 1801 to 1805 and from 1808 to 1823. "Mennonite Family
History" (Schapansky] July 1994 issue: "He was a late arrival of the first wave of immigrants and was
placed at Schoenwiese in 1795 on a temporary basis. He was given the Schoenhorst homestead of
Martin Wiebe after the death of the latter. After the arrest of Peter Hoeppner, he was given the latter's
homestead at Chortitza, and gave his Schoenhorst homestead to Johann Loeppky. Peter Siemens was
the first, and longest serving Oberschulze (equivalent to mayor or reeve) of the Old Colony, from
1801 to 1805, and from 1808 to 1823."
"Stammbaum der Familie Siemens" (Siemens Family Tree) by Leo Siemens and Dr. U. Hoescher
(Berlin and Goslar, 1910), identified Peter Siemens on page 168. My translation of the comments are
as follows: "RA 1 Peter, born 1765, died 1823. Based on information from RA 15, he was born around
1760 and died in 1845, in his 86th year. Towards the end of the 18th century (1795) he emigrated to
Russia from Marienburg, West Prussia. His wife was born a Klassen. He was a Master Builder
(architect?). Mennonite. From around 1810 to 1823 he was the Oberschulze. During this time, he
received a large silver medal from Kaiser Alexander I for the construction of a church building. The
medal had a recognition band on it and was intended to be worn around the neck (latterly it is in the
possession of RA 9). He reportedly also had brothers and one sister. From the brothers, one reportedly
emigrated to America. The son of another brother came to Russia; his first name was Gerhard." Ron
Siemens (Bragg Creek, Alberta), in his Email of December 14, 2000, reported that the silver medallion

may have been born about 1792. Ron Siemens (Bragg Creek, Alberta), note:
"Correspondence with Diane/Peter Siemens confirms birth date." Henry Schapansky in his
letter of 2 Feb 1995, with the accompanying family lists, lists Katharina as born in 1793.
The Old Colony, p. 180 and 403, incorrectly give her birth date as 3 Apr 1795 and her
death date as 16 Jul 1814. Sie heiratete Jacob von Kampen, Heirat 21 Nov 1811 in

Johann Epp's book "Gedenke des ganzen Weges . . . Band 1 : Die Geschichte der Familien
Epp, Froese, Unger, Lepp, u. a." on p. 30 incorrectly says that Peter Siemens was born in
1800. The diary of Jacob Niebuhr (b. 4 May 1862) says he was born 18 Feb 1796. The Old
Colony, p. 180, says he was born 17 Mar 1796. Er heiratete Anna Lepp, Heirat 7 May 1815.

Schoenwiese #34. The entry says he transferred to Chortitza in 1852. His n. s. birth date
was 28 Sep 1801. The diary of Jacob Niebuhr (b. 4 May 1862) gives his death date as 21
Aug 1870, but The Old Colony, p. 180 and 397, give his death date as 8 Nov 1870. One
source says he was born in Schoenwiese, but this seems likely to be incorrect since his
birthplace is given as Chortitza in the 1801 Chortitza Colony Vital Records. Er heiratete

of Peter Unger, was 9 years old, suggesting that if Johann was the son of Peter Unger then
he was born ABT 1805 and not 1810. The year of birth of 1810 stated by Helena (Neufeld)

owned a second homestead at Chortitza #38 in 1814 and 1816. He was the Oberschulze of
the Chortitza Colony from 1801 to 1805 and from 1808 to 1823. "Mennonite Family
History" (Schapansky] July 1994 issue: "He was a late arrival of the first wave of
immigrants and was placed at Schoenwiese in 1795 on a temporary basis. He was given the
Schoenhorst homestead of Martin Wiebe after the death of the latter. After the arrest of
Peter Hoeppner, he was given the latter's homestead at Chortitza, and gave his Schoenhorst
homestead to Johann Loeppky. Peter Siemens was the first, and longest serving
Oberschulze (equivalent to mayor or reeve) of the Old Colony, from 1801 to 1805, and from
1808 to 1823."
"Stammbaum der Familie Siemens" (Siemens Family Tree) by Leo Siemens and Dr. U.
Hoescher (Berlin and Goslar, 1910), identified Peter Siemens on page 168. My translation
of the comments are as follows: "RA 1 Peter, born 1765, died 1823. Based on information
from RA 15, he was born around 1760 and died in 1845, in his 86th year. Towards the end
of the 18th century (1795) he emigrated to Russia from Marienburg, West Prussia. His wife
was born a Klassen. He was a Master Builder (architect?). Mennonite. From around 1810
to 1823 he was the Oberschulze. During this time, he received a large silver medal from
Kaiser Alexander I for the construction of a church building. The medal had a recognition
band on it and was intended to be worn around the neck (latterly it is in the possession of
RA 9). He reportedly also had brothers and one sister. From the brothers, one reportedly
emigrated to America. The son of another brother came to Russia; his first name was
Gerhard." Ron Siemens (Bragg Creek, Alberta), in his Email of December 14, 2000,
reported that the silver medallion is in California in the possession of Peter and Diane
Siemens of Los Gatos. Er heiratete Katharina Klassen, Heirat 3 Oct 1790.
iii Katherina Siemens, * 19 Jun 1767.
iv Johann Jakob Siemens, * 24 Dec 1771 in Beiershorst, Gross Werder, Prussia, † 1809 in
Rosenthal, Chortitza, South Russia. Johann lived in Rosenthal in 1802, 1803, and 1808
(Schapansky, MFH, July, 1992, p. 116). He received his homestead from Johann Neufeld
(probably an uncle of Anna), after Neufeld's death and before 1802 (Schapansky, MFH,
July, 1992, p. 116). In the 1802 Chortitza census he is listed at Rosenthal #20 and in the
1808 census he is listed at Rosenthal #19 (B. H. Unruh, p. 263). He migrated to Russia in
1795 from Brunau, W. Prussia (B. H. Unruh, p. 263).
Schapansky noted that Johann had immigrated to Russia in 1796-98. His records were
found in the records of Rosenthal in 1802, 1803, and 1808. Prior to 1802, he took over the
farm of Johann Neufeld after Neufeld's death (probably was an uncle of Anna, Johann's
wife, according to Schapansky). Er heiratete Anna Neufeld.
