S ummer heat. No diploma. Too many shoes. Moving in together.
City or village. Milena. Heidi. And the mountains. Mountains everywhere.
A small Swiss town. Milena didn’t pass school leaving examination, Heidi did. Heidi moves
into Milena’s parent’s flat as they are on holiday. Milena wants to find an apartment of her
own, together with Heidi. Milena starts working in a shoe warehouse to be able to afford
this independence. Things around Milena start getting stranger as Heidi diverges from her
more and more. As their friendship lies in ruins, Milena wants to get out and Heidi follows
her into the mountains.
‘The title HINTER DIESEN BERGEN — BEYOND THESE MOUNTAINS
vaguely symbolizes a certain place, perhaps more than one place.
The location for the film was in Schwyz, somewhere in the heart
of Switzerland, the place where I grew up. For this film I wanted
to re-create this place as a place closed in by mountains, with ist
own laws. The outcome was a nameless town which, in the film,
sometimes seems surreal, but perhaps exactly for that reason,
it reveals more truth than its real model would.
It’s a small world where you run into the same people all
the time. A safe world that has managed to reduce all external
problems as much as possible. And still, or maybe even precisely
because of that, Milena’s perspective starts wandering to the
mountain peaks...
Beyond these mountains lie homeland and outland, certainty and
danger, prison and promise.’
Michael Krummenacher
BACKGROUND
December 2008. Being tired of making shortfilms, the 25 year old directing student
Michael Krummenacher decides to shoot his first feature-lenght film as an extra project
besides his studies, a low-budget movie without regular funding. Lucky to find a small group
of fellow students and other enthusiasts from Germany, Switzerland and even Belgium as
well as having knowledge of the support by the University and Television Munich the ball
was set rolling.
After long days and nights of writing and preparation they managed to finish the script
and start shooting HINTER DIESEN BERGEN in August 2009 in Schwyz, Switzerland. Cast
and crew were housed in a Swiss Army’s bunker and Krummenacher’s parents had to
leave they’re flat for days as it became one of the main shooting locations. And somehow
(probably no one really remembers how ...) after twenty days with hardly any sleep the last
day of shooting arrived and all the scenes had been shot and stored onto harddisks. Tired
but happy they left Schwyz and postproduction of HINTER DIESEN BERGEN started in Munich.
Finishing the film in June 2010 with a budget of about 20.000 Euro was only made possible
by all the people who believed in it and were relentlessly supporting the project with their
heart’s blood and energy.

ice), crying over novels, vegetables, dancing tango, semicolons. She does not like butter
that has gone too soft, the smell in airplanes, saying goodbye over the phone, facebook,
the finger- wagging calvinist in her, waking up sweaty. She hopes to be famous, rich and
happy in life.
