In a nutshell
Mit seinen 400 000 Einwohnern ist Zürich die grösste
Stadt der Schweiz. Der grössere Metropolraum umfasst
knapp 2 Millionen Einwohner. Die Innenstadt ist in 12
Stadtkreise und 34 Quartiere unterteilt. Der Kreis 1 um­
fasst den inneren Stadtkern rund um das Bellevue, den
Paradeplatz und die Altstadt. Die Kreise 4 und 5 fungie­
ren als Schmelztiegel der Kulturen; hier reihen sich indi­
sche Restaurants an Szenebars. Mit Durchschnittstempe­
raturen zwischen 0,3 °C im Winter und angenehmen
18 °C im Sommer bewegt sich Zürich klimatisch gesehen
im gemässigten Bereich. Zahlreiche Gewässer prägen das
Stadtbild, im Winter wird manches Seebad zur Sauna
umfunktioniert. Neue Verkehrsverbindungen erschlies­
sen vormals traditionelle Aussenquartiere wie Oerlikon,
Schwamendingen und Altstetten. Der Prime Tower ist das
Symbol für die zunehmende Urbanisierung der Indust­
riequartiere um Zürich West. Der vormals umstrittene
Sechseläutenplatz vor dem Opernhaus hat sich zum Lieb­
lingsort der Stadtbevölkerung entwickelt.
With 400,000 inhabitants, Zurich is the largest city in Switz­
erland. Its greater metropolitan area has a population of
about 2 million. The municipality of Zurich is divided into 12
districts (Kreise) and 34 neighbourhoods. Kreis 1 comprises
the Old Town centre with Bellevue and Paradeplatz. Kreis 4
and Kreis 5 are a melting pot of diverse cultures, where In­
dian restaurants stand side by side with trendy bars. Zurich
enjoys a moderate climate, with average temperatures ran­
ging from 0.3 °C in winter to an agreeable 18 °C in summer.
With its lake and rivers, the city has plenty of water and many
a summer bathing station is turned into a sauna during the
winter months. The city is growing, with new transport links
opening up neighbourhoods that were traditionally looked
on as outlying suburbs, such as Oerlikon, Schwamendingen
and Altstetten. The Prime Tower symbolises the increasing
urbanisation of the former industrial areas of Zurich West.
But change is also afoot at the heart of the city: the once con­
troversial square at Sechseläutenplatz in front of the Opera
House has become one of the residents’ favourite places.

It’s only the heavy velvet cur­
tains and notices in the foyer that
still remind guests that this
popu­lar nightclub was once a
cin­ema. In addition to its parties,
the Plaza Club nowadays also
stages concerts, burlesque
shows, open-mic nights and
weekend markets. The clientele
is correspondingly varied. On
Thursdays, the dance floor is the
preserve of students, who cele­
brate (or try to forget) their exam
results until the early hours of
the morning.

gelassenen Vorhänge sorgen

is home to a small corner of New
York. The lowered drapes create
a diffuse light in the wooden bar,
with its lush bouquets of flowers
and the whirring fans. The list
of beverages also reflects a taste
of the Big Apple: melancholy
with a touch of megalomania, in
the most sophisticated building
in the city.

­Gegenwartskunst und den

The Löwenbräu-Areal used to
be a brewery; today, it is home to
a host of art institutions and gal­
leries, including Hauser & Wirth
