Part 1: General Provisions § 1 Scope These Subject-Specific Provisions (FSB) supplement the General Study and Examination Regulations for the Bachelor and Master Study Programmes (ASPO) of the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg (JMU) adopted on 5 August 2009 as amended. § 2 Purpose of the Study, Objective of the Examinations 1 (1) The Master Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences is provided by the Faculty of Biology of the JMU as research-oriented international study programme with the degree “Master of Science” (M.Sc.) 2 within the framework of a consecutive Bachelor and Master Study pattern. The degree Master of 3 Science constitutes an additional professional respectively research-oriented degree. The Master Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences is jointly realised by the departments affiliated to the Graduate School of Life Science (GSLS). 1 (2) The Master Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences is an international study programme in the English language and provides an international, research-oriented education in the field of life 2 sciences. Theoretical and practical competences in the field of life sciences are imparted in order to 3 be able to address scientific issues from the fields of life sciences. Students attain the competence to 4 apprehend and formulate complex scientific issues. Students acquire the ability to identify the relevance of scientific findings and to contrive and implement experimental approaches independently 5 with regard to issues from the field of life sciences. Students obtain the ability to interpret the results 6 of experiments and to evaluate and class within a scientific context. The flexible organisation of the study programme opens up the possibility for particularly qualified students to start with a doctorate at an early stage by means of a “Fast Track” which is accompanied by a structured training program and therewith allows for the degree Master of Science in parallel with the doctorate. Specifications are given in the doctorate regulations. 7 By means of the thesis, the students demonstrate that they are able to deal with a scientific project from life sciences within a limited scale of time and topic independently particularly according to common methods or their modification. 1 (3) The Master examination is to determine if the candidate is able to make up the coherences in an area of life sciences within the respective current scientific state and is capable of deploying scientific methods independently. It constitutes a further professional respectively research-oriented degree. § 3 Beginning of the Study, Programme Structure, Standard Period of Study (1) The Master Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences can be set about for each winter semester. 1 (2) The study is divided into the following areas: 3 Area resp. Subarea ECTS Points Compulsory Area 30 Optional Compulsory Area 60 Final Thesis 30 Thesis Life Sciences 25 Colloquium Life Sciences 5 in total 120 2 The assignment of the modules to the individual areas follows from the Study Programme Description (SFB) that is attached to these Subject-Specific Provisions. (3) The Master Study Programme Life Sciences has a standard period of study of four semesters in which a total of 120 ECTS points has to be acquired. § 4 Admission Requirements, Recommended Basic Knowledge 1 (1) The admission to the Master Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences requires a) a degree in a Bachelor study programme (acquisition of 180 ECTS points) at the JMU or another national or international institution or a comparable national or international degree (for example State examination). b) a focus in the areas of life sciences, mathematics, physics and chemistry at the acquisition of the degree referred to in point a). c) the proof of skills in the English language at a level not lower than C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for languages in a suitable manner for example through aa) the Test of English as a Foreign language (TOEFL) with at least 590 paper-based TOEFL test respectively 240 computer-based TOEFL test respectively 95 internet-based TOEFL test points or bb) the International English Language Test System with a return of 6,5 or better or cc) a Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) d) and the assessment of qualification criteria for the Master Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences in an assessment test (compare attachment AT) 2 The assessment committee decides on the equivalence of first degrees (sentence 1 letter a)) and the 3 satisfaction of requirements under sentence 1 letters b) and c). When deciding on the equivalence of first degrees with the aforementioned reference degree, the principle of equal treatment applies in accordance with Article 63 BayHSchG. 1 (2) In the case of absence of the requirements mentioned in paragraph 1 sentence 1 letters a) to c), admission to the Master Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences is not given unless an admission to 2 the Master study pursuant to paragraph 4 comes into question. In this case, the applicant receives a notification including the reasons and information on legal remedies. 1 (3) If the requirements according to paragraph 1 sentence 1 letters a) to c) are met, the applicant is 2 admitted to the Assessment Test (compare attachment AT). A successfully completed assessment test entitles for the purposes of the Master Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences at the JMU in the 3 following winter semester. At an unsuccessful assessment test, the applicant receives a notification 4 4 including the reasons and information on legal remedies. He/she may repeat the failed assessment test for the Master Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences once at the earliest possible date. 1 (4) In order to facilitate an uninterrupted transition from the Bachelor to the Master study, an applicant who is not yet able to prove a required degree according to paragraph 1 sentence 1 letter a) may obtain an admission to the Master study provided with a suspensory condition for the following semester on the following conditions: a) the proof of at least 150 ECTS points or – in study programmes without ECTS modularisation – performances in equivalent amount at the time of the application for the first degree study according to paragraph 1 sentence 1 letter a), b) the proof of the focus mentioned in paragraph 1 sentence 1 letter b), c) the proof of the acquisition of language skills required in paragraph 1 sentence 1 letter c) d) and the testing of qualification criteria for the Master Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences in an assessment test (compare attachment AT). 2 The final admission depends on the fulfilment of the suspensory condition that the first degree mentioned in paragraph 1 sentence 1 letter a) is proven by no later than at the beginning of the first 3 semester in the Master Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences. In the event of non-fulfilment of this suspensory condition, the applicant is to be taken off the register at the beginning of the first semester. (5) For applicants who have not accomplished the respective first degree at a German university, by derogation of the guidelines of the matriculation by-law, a proof of sufficient German language skills is not necessary. § 5 Modularisation, ECTS 1 2 (1) The Bachelor Study Programme is modular. A module comprises one or more courses coordinated in terms of substance and time, their preparation and follow-up as well as the studyassociated (rated or unrated) examination performances to achieve in the context of this course. 1 (2) The overall workload for one module to perform by the students is described with ECTS points. 2 One ECTS point corresponds to a working time of 25 to 30 hours of an average student. (3) Further details are found in §§ 7 and 8 ASPO. § 6 Control Examinations (1) No control examinations under § 12(5) ASPO are conducted. § 7 Examination Board 1 (1) In derogation from § 13(1), third sentence ASPO, the examination board consists of 5 members 2 entitled to vote. From these voting members, two are elected by the faculty council of the Faculty of Biology and one each of the faculty council of the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Chemistry and 3 Pharmacy and the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy of the JMU. As an advisory member a student representative is on the examination board and is appointed by the examination board upon proposal 4 by the students (“Fachschaftsvertretung Biologie”). The chairman of the examination board and its 5 advisory members are elected from among the voting members of the examination board. The voting members of the examination board also have to be members of the Graduate School of Life Science (GSLS). 1 (2) At least three professors have to be on the examination board, thereof at least one each from the 2 Faculty of Biology and the Faculty of Medicine. The chairman has to be habilitated or equally qualified. 5 (3) The examination board may decide to consult further advisory members. § 8 Recognition of Modules, Periods of Study, Study and Examination Performances 1 (1) Modules, periods of study, study and examination performances acquired in other study programmes or at other universities are generally recognised by the examination board except they 2 3 are not equivalent. Details are to infer from § 17 ASPO. By way of derogation from § 17(4) ASPO, modules and sub-modules may be taken into account up to the overall level of ECTS points to achieve. § 9 Study Programme Description, Study Programme Schedule (1) The modules of the Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences are mentioned in the Study Programme Description (attachment). 1 2 (2) The Faculty of Biology announces the latest module descriptions. By a Study Programme Schedule (SVP), it issues a recommendation on an ideal-typical course of the study. 1 (3) The modules listed in the study programme description and the module respectively sub-module descriptions of the optional compulsory area and in the area of transferable skills are not final at this. 2 The examination board is able to authorise further modules to these Study-Specific Provisions in anticipation of a by-law implemented at a later date particularly at the written request of the candidate. 3 As far as the modules respectively sub-modules are not provided by the faculties associated with the GSLS, § 9(1), fourth sentence ASPO has to be noted in particular. § 10 Language of Instruction 1 2 The courses are generally held in the English language. They may be held in the German or another language at the choice of the lecturer in coordination with the module manager if this possibility is laid 3 down in the module description. However, there is no entitlement of the students on this. Part 2: Implementation of Examinations § 11 Study-Associated Examination Procedure 1 (1) For each module a study-associated evaluation examination is conducted which has reference to 2 a course or a group of courses. The evaluation examination is effected either by means of a rated examination performance, an unrated study performance or, in exceptional cases, a combination of 3 both performance patterns. Type, length and extent of the evaluation examination are listed for each module in the attached Study Programme Description; details are regulated in the Module Manual. 4 Further details of the study-associated evaluation examination are laid down in § 7 ASPO. 1 (2) If several forms of examination for the study-associated evaluation examination of a module are listed in the attached Study Programme Description or if the evaluation examination of a module or sub-module consists of several examination performances (for example an interim exam, an exam and an assessment of exercises), this is to regulate in the module manual and details are to be announced by the lecturer at the beginning of the course. As far as an exam has been defined as form of examination, it may be replaced by the lecturer no later than four weeks before the examination date by an oral single respectively group examination as far as an oral examination is intended in the attached Study Programme Description. 1 (3) The participation in an evaluation examination may in exceptional and duly justified cases be 2 made conditional on the completion of one or more prerequisites. If such prerequisites are necessary 6 for the evaluation examination in one module, this is specified in the Study Programme Description; details are regulated in the Module Manual. 1 2 (4) The examinations are generally held in the English language. They may be held in the German or another language at the choice of the lecturer in coordination with the module manager if this 3 possibility is laid down in the attached Study Programme Description. However, there is no entitlement of the students on this. (5) The evaluation procedure usually shall not exceed four weeks. § 11a Multiple-Choice Tasks 1 (1) In accordance with § 22(8) ASPO, written examinations may be conducted in whole or in part in such a way that the examinee has to indicate which of the answers submitted with the tasks he/she 2 deems right (multiple-choice tasks). If this type of examination is adopted, this has to be announced 3 to the students at the latest 4 weeks before the examination. The question-answer catalogues are 4 compiled by persons entitled to hold examinations according to § 16(1) ASPO. It has to be 5 determined at it, which answers are accepted as correct. The examination tasks must allow reliable 6 examination results. The examination tasks are to check as to whether they are deficient on the basis 7 of sentence 5 before the finding of the examination result. If this check reveals that individual examination tasks are deficient, the respective examination tasks are not to be considered at the 8 finding of the examination result; it must be aimed at the reduced number of examination tasks. The reduction of examination tasks must not work to the disadvantage of the examinees. 9 In the case of a holding of examinations in parts in the form of multiple-choice questions, a separate evaluation of the multiple-choice examination part is only effected if the sum of evaluation units to achieve in this part of the examination reaches an extent which makes an application of the paragraphs 4 and 5 necessary. 1 (2) Examinations according to paragraph 1 sentence 1 may be structured as single-choice tasks (as it is known to the examinee, exactly one of altogether n answers is right – “1 of n”) or multiple-choice tasks (one number x known or unknown to the examinee depending on the task of altogether n answers is right – “x of n”). 2 For single-choice tasks applies: For each task answered correctly evaluation units are assigned, whereas those are either structured uniformly or differ from each other (uniform or different weighting) 4 particularly if the degree of difficulty of the tasks differs significantly. The examiner may determine if 5 he/she wants to make a random marking. The expected random value, taking the probability into account with which an examinee simply guessing marks the correct answer (guessing probability), comes to 1 divided by the number of answer suggestions in single-choice tasks if need be multiplied by the weighting factor of this task. 6 Multiple-choice tasks have three evaluation variants: BV1, BV2 and BV3. i 7 In the case of evaluation variant BV1, each match between an answer chosen respectively not chosen by the examinee and an answer accepted as correct respectively not accepted as correct is 8 ii 9 awarded with one point each. For each mismatch a minus point is given. The evaluation of a task 10 cannot be negative, i.e. it ranges between the number of answer alternatives and 0. The overall evaluation of all tasks corresponds to the total number of points of all multiple-choice tasks according to the weighting of the individual tasks. i BV3 is only applicable if in each task at least one answer is accepted as correct. BV1 and BV2 are also applicable if no answer is accepted as correct. ii If, for example, the answers A, B, C, D, E are given in a multiple-choice task of which A and B are correct, and the examinee marks A and C, the examinee receives 1 point (3 matches – 2 mismatches) of 5 possible answers, i.e. 20%. 7 11 In the case of evaluation variant BV2, each match between an answer chosen respectively not chosen by the examinee and an answer accepted as correct respectively not accepted as correct is 12 13 awarded with one point each. No minus points are given. From the individual evaluations of the multiple-choice tasks, again, a weighted total number of points according to the weighting of the 14 iii individual tasks is calculated. Thereof, the expected random value to be calculated is subtracted. 15 In the case of evaluation variant BV3, only each match between an answer chosen by the examinee 16 and an answer accepted as correct is awarded with one point. Answers not chosen are not awarded 17 with a point. For Answers of a task chosen by the examinee but not accepted as correct, minus 18 points are given. Those are calculated as follows: If there are x answers accepted as correct and y iv 19 answers not accepted as correct, x/y minus points are given. Hence, both the marking of no answer alternative and the marking of all answer alternatives leads to 0 points, unless all answer alternatives 20 21 are accepted as correct. The evaluation of a task cannot be negative. The maximum number of 22 points to achieve per task corresponds to the number of correct answer alternatives. Because this is not known to the examinee and the peculiar weighting of the respective task would therefore not be apparent, in the case of BV3, with regard to the basic evaluation, the achieved number of points per task is set into relation with the maximum number of points to achieve, i.e. the maximum basic 23 evaluation per task comes to 1 point. The overall evaluation of all tasks corresponds to the weighted sum of points of all multiple-choice tasks according to the weighting of the individual tasks. 1 (3) The examiner determines in agreement with the module manager whether a random marking is effected in the case of single-choice tasks respectively according to which of the indicated evaluation variants for multiple-choice tasks evaluation shall be effected and announces that to the students at 2 the latest 4 weeks before the relevant examination date. The weighting factors of the individual tasks are to be announced with the assignment of the tasks in the examination. (4) The multiple-choice examination part is considered satisfactory if the examinee satisfies at least one of the two following requirements: a) The examinee altogether achieves a certain percentage in proportion to the best possible result. Generally this comes to 50% unless it is not modified by the examiner in favour of the examinees depending on the level of difficulty of the examination. The fixing of the percentage is announced together with the examination result according to paragraph 5 sentence 3. b) The number of evaluation units achieved by the examinee does not come below 20% of the evaluation units achieved by the examinees on average who have participated in the respective examination for the first time as far as both the number of evaluation units achieved by the examinee and the average value are higher than 0. 1 (5) If the examinee has reached the trigger number of evaluation units required for the completion of the examination, the mark for the examination part prompted in the multiple-choice tasks in the case of an examination provided with full marks will be “Very Good” at a minimum of 75 per cent “Good” at a minimum of 50 per cent but less than 75 per cent, “Satisfactory” at a minimum of 25 per cent but less than 50 per cent, “Sufficient” at less than 25 per cent iii In the case of multiple-choice tasks, for example, in which the number of correct answers has not been announced to the examinee, this is calculated as follows: The frequency probability of each individual answer of a task is 50% or 0,5. The expected random value of these multiple-choice tasks thus comes to the number of answers multiplied by 0,5. If, for example, the answers A, B, C, D, E are given in a multiple-choice task of which A and B are correct, and the examinee marks A and C, the examinee receives 3 points (3 matches) of which the expected random value 2,5 is subtracted, i.e. with 0,5 of 2,5 possible points he/she obtains 20%. iv If for example the answers A, B, C, D, E are given in a multiple-choice task of which A and B are correct, and the examinee marks A and C, the examinee receives 1/3 point (1 match for A – 2/3 for the choosing of the incorrect alternative C) of 2 possible points (for A and B), i.e. 16,7%. 8 2 of evaluation units achieved on top of that in proportion to the achieved evaluation units. When using 3 half marks, it has correspondingly to be interpolated. The pass mark, the number of evaluation units and the average of the reference group mentioned in paragraph 4 letter a) respectively b) are to be announced by display or other adequate means at the notification of the examination results. § 12 Application for Examinations 1 The examination board determines place and date for each examination and announces them by 2 display or appropriate electronic systems. It may delegate this task to the respective module 3 managers. The students have to take heed of the notices and publications in electronic form for 4 themselves. Times of oral or practical examinations may also be determined in coordination with the respective examiner in the specific sense of the teaching unit concerned within the period of time 5 specified by the examination board for example by using the forms provided. The respective 6 requirements are announced in a suitable manner to the students involved. The deadlines for evaluation examinations to be prepared at home, like written term papers, research reports, work reports, protocols, reviews and portfolios, are announced by the respective lecturer at the latest two 7 weeks after the beginning of the lecture period. If students fail to adhere to this date without due justification (usually sickness, substantiated by a medical certificate), they do not pass the examination. § 13 Evaluation of Examinations 1 In derogation from § 29(4) ASPO applies: If a module consists of several sub-modules with rated examinations, the module mark is calculated on the basis of the average rating of the sub-modules 2 used weighted according to ECTS points (weighted arithmetic mean). The calculation of marks is measured to one decimal place; all other places are dropped without rounding. § 14 Repetition of Examinations 1 (1) Notwithstanding the provisions of § 32 ASPO, the respective examiners may arrange additional examination dates with the examinees in the event of failure to pass examinations within the frame of 2 the existing capacities in the same semester or at the beginning of the following semester. In doing so, a maximum of one additional date per examination and examinee is permissible, whereby, as a 3 rule, at least two weeks shall be between both examination dates. There is no entitlement of the 4 students on additional examination dates. The requirements referred to in § 12 are to be complied including within the framework of any additional examination dates. 1 (2) If the participation in an evaluation examination is made conditional on preliminary performances, a successfully completed preliminary performance enables to participate in evaluation examinations of the respective semester as well as, if the examination is not passed, in evaluation examinations of 2 subsequent semesters. Derogations from this provision are specified in the Study Programme Description. § 15 Inspection of Examination Records 1 2 (1) Inspection of examination records is granted under § 37 ASPO. The request for inspection has to be submitted by the examinee to the chairman of the examination board within one month after the announcement of the examination results. 1 (2) The chairman of the examination board decides on place, time and modalities of the inspection in 2 consultation with the examinee. An inspection in the form of a collective date is possible especially in 3 the case of written examinations. The result of an oral examination is announced to the examinee 4 immediately after the examination. In the case of written term papers and similar forms of 9 examination, it may be proceeded as in sentence 2 or a special agreement concerning the inspection may be made. § 16 Final Thesis and Colloquium 1 2 3 (1) The final thesis is awarded with 30 ECTS points. The processing takes six months. The issuing 4 is effected by the chairman of the examination board. The topic may only be issued to the examinee at the time when he/she has obtained altogether at least 30 ECTS points from the compulsory area in 5 the Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences. Upon motivated request, the examination board may 6 permit exemptions in individual cases. The topic of the thesis has to be agreed with the advisor from the field of life sciences and submitted with a respective confirmation signed by this side to the 7 examination board. The topic and the award date are placed on record by the examination board. 8 The topic can only be restituted once for justified reasons and with the consent of the examination 9 board during the first third of the processing. The examinee has to submit the thesis to the examination board in due time that this date falls before the end of the deadline of § 12(3) resp. (6) 10 ASPO concerning the fiction of failure to pass for the first time. Further details are regulated in § 23 11 ASPO. At the filing, in addition to the written form, a copy on an electronic storage medium has to be submitted in an accessible format and a readable form. 1 2 (2) There is a final colloquium. Details on extent and implementation are regulated in the attached Study Programme Description and the Module Manual. § 17 Passing the Master Examination 1 The Master examination in the Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences is passed if modules in the scope of at least 120 ECTS points in accordance with the division into areas mentioned in § 3(2), first sentence have been passed. § 18 Calculation of the Cumulative Grade 1 The overall mark is formed from the mark of the compulsory area and the mark of the thesis module. The mark of the compulsory area is formed according to the procedure described in § 34 ASPO from the average of the marks of the individual modules with rated examinations weighted according to 3 ECTS points (weighted arithmetic mean). The optional compulsory area does not have influence in 4 the calculation of marks. The weighting of sub-areas indicated in the following applies to the calculation of the overall mark. 2 Weighting Factor for Area resp. It applies to all students of the Master Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences who will take up their study at the JMU according to the provisions of the General Study and Examination Regulations for the Bachelor and Master Study Programmes (ASPO) at the JMU of 5 August 2009 as amended from the winter semester 2012/2013. 11 Attachment Assessment Procedure 1 2 Condition for the admission to the Master study is the passing of an assessment test. This is conducted as follows. § 1 Purpose of the Procedure 1 The test assesses on the basis of 1. the education programme 2. the subject-specific and methodical knowledge to prove 2 the qualification criteria for the Master study. The aim is to assess whether the applicant meets the requirements of the Master Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences and is capable of performing 3 scientific work independently. Particularly, candidates shall be identified who appear to be suitable for 4 a doctorate under the Fast Track procedure. The qualification criteria for the Master Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences requires the demonstration of qualification according to the following provisions. § 2 Procedure for Testing Qualification Criteria (1) The procedure for testing qualification criteria is conducted by the Graduate School of Life Sciences each in the summer semester for the following winter semester under the responsibility of the Faculty of Biology of the JMU. (2) Applications for admission to the Master Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences are to submit in the manner specified for the Master Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences by the assessment committee (compare § 3) to the chairman of this committee in due form and time (time-limit); an electronic application process via the respective websites of the JMU may be especially intended at 2 this. Documents appropriate to paragraph 3 may be handed in on reasons for which the applicant is not responsible by 15 May at the latest (time-limit) in order to receive an ultimate admission to the 3 Master Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences. In the event that this limit cannot be satisfied (for example, the diploma in the Bachelor study programme has not yet been issued), admission is only possible via condition precedent according to the provisions of § 4(4) FSB. (3) Applications shall be accompanied: 1. Performances of the first degree study mentioned in § 4(1) sentence 1 letter a) FSB a) Proof of an university or equivalent degree (in the case of a requested ultimate Masteradmission) attesting the achieved overall mark or b) 1 in the case of a requested admission via condition precedent to the Master study, the proof of the acquisition of 150 ECTS points or – in study programmes without ECTS 2 modularisation – performances in equivalent amount. The attestation must identify the achieved marks. c) Proof of the required focus according to § 4(1) sentence 1 letter b) FSB for example by means of an overview of previously achieved study and examination performances (Transcript of Records). 2. An attestation of the acquisition of language skills required in § 4(1) sentence 1 letter c) FSB. 12 § 3 Assessment Committee 1 The assessment procedure is executed by a committee consisting of eight members of the GSLS 2 entitled to hold academic examinations (Article 62 BayHSchG). The appointment of the members is effected upon proposal of the GSLS by the examination committee for a period of three years; a re3 appointment is possible. The chairman is elected by the members of the committee by simple 4 majority. The committee constitutes a quorum if its members have been invited in accordance with a 5 period of notification of three days and the majority of members are present. At elections and other 6 decisions (particularly in the assessment procedure), decision will be made by simple majority. In the 7 case of a parity of votes, the chairman shall have the casting vote. The committee may draw on other 8 persons in the performance of its tasks. The assessment committee may decide to call in consultant members without voting rights in particular advanced students of the Graduate School of Life Sciences. § 4 Admission to the Assessment Procedure, Scope and Topic of the Assessment Procedure, Finding and Announcement of the Result, Transcript (1) The admission to the Assessment Procedure presupposes, in addition to the fulfilment of the requirements pursuant to § 4 FSB, that the documents mentioned in § 2(3) are available on time and in full. (2) The Assessment Procedure is implemented in three stages: 1. 1 2. 1 First, an initial pre-selection is made (first stage of the Assessment Procedure) which will examine on the basis of the documents submitted if the admission is to be rejected due to 2 unsuitability already apparent from the documents. This is the case, when not at least the mark “good” (2,4) has been achieved in the first degree to prove according to § 4(1) sentence 1 letter a) FSB (in the case of a requested final admission) or in the performances to prove according to § 4(4) sentence 1 letter b) FSB in the scope of 150 ECTS points (in the case of a 3 requested admission via condition precedent). In the case of a requested admission to the Master study via condition precedent, the calculation of the average mark is executed as follows: First, all successfully completed graded modules are sorted by grading scales starting with the best and, within the same grading scale, starting with the highest ECTS points; then, so many modules are selected in the current order until the sum of ECTS points reaches the number of 150 ECTS points; the average mark is calculated on the basis of the average rating of marks of the individual modules used weighted according to ECTS points (weighted arithmetic mean), whereas the final module included is only weighted with the ECTS points necessary for the completion of 150 ECTS points. The calculation of marks is measured to 5 one decimal place; all other places are dropped without rounding. If the candidate should have passed modules in the scope of at least 150 ECTS points, the amount of the modules achieved with numerical marks, however, come to less than 150 ECTS points, only the modules with numerical marks are considered. In a further pre-selection (second stage of the Assessment Procedure), basic competences in individual sub-areas of life sciences, for example zoology, botany, cell biology, microbiology, developmental biology, physiology, behavioural biology, psychology, ecology, biochemistry, 2 genetics, neurobiology and bioinformatics, are verified in a two-hour exam. The exam comprises two parts: an initial general part containing the same questions for all examinees and a second specific part in which the examinees have to choose altogether two questions 3 from different topical sets of questions. The outcomes of the general and specific part are 4 5 weighted 1:1. The sets of questions of the specific part are also weighted 1:1. The exam is implemented in the period from 1 April to 30 April at the Julius Maximilian University of Wuerzburg; the date is scheduled at least four weeks in advance by the assessment 6 committee. The exam may also be implemented by a confidant appointed by the assessment 7 committee at other universities. The examinees are invited by the JMU in time at least 13 8 fourteen days before the respective exam date. There is no reimbursement of travel 9 expenses. The examinees have passed the second stage of the assessment procedure if 10 they achieve 2,0 or better in the exam. In this case, they are invited to the third stage of the assessment procedure, otherwise they did not pass the second stage of the assessment procedure and are to reject as unsuitable. 3. The professional qualification is to prove additionally in a selection interview in the English 2 language of ca. 30 minutes (third stage of the assessment procedure). The selection 3 interview is implemented in the period from 1 May to 15 June. The examinees are invited by 4 the JMU in time at least fourteen days before the respective exam date. The selection interview with the individual applicant is conducted by two examiners each appointed by the 5 assessment committee. Examiners may either be members of the assessment committee itself or persons working in the field of teaching holding courses in the Master Study Programme FOKUS Life Sciences and are authorised to hold examinations according to the 6 Academic Examiner’s Regulation (Article 62 BayHSchG). There is no reimbursement of travel 7 expenses. A record must be kept on the main topic that has to be signed by the examiners. 8 Furthermore, the record must contain date and place of the selection interview, the name of 9 the examiner, the name of the examinee and the outcome of the interview. The examiners assess the examiner after the completion of the interview for the Master Study Programme 10 FOKUS Life Sciences. In the selection interview, the examinee has to give a talk about a 11 scientific project or internship in which he/she was or is involved. The topic is generally the 12 topic of the final thesis of the first degree study. In exceptional duly justified cases, the 13 assessment committee may permit another topic at the free choice of the examinee. After 14 that, the examinee is questioned on the talk for ten minutes. The selection interview 15 concludes with a general discussion of 10 minutes. Each of the three stages is rated with a maximum of each 10 points according to the following scheme.
