This piece came to my attention via an article in the sueddeutsche zeitung “Highly praised, and yet neglected”. The journalist Hans Kratzer reports amongst other things, on the neglect of the unique war-memorial in Germering. The image looks more like a biothop than one Georg Brenningers stone sculptures. The world renowned artist would have turned 100 this year. How will these works work in the public sphere forty years from now, trying hard to compete and thus taking financial risks? I would be pleased if you could show me some other similar examples, and ideas/motivations of what we could do. Doesn’t it hurt you, as other art afficianados and fellow artists, to see your passions disappear/disintegrate? This question has been moving me for a couple of years. Its one of the key questions that sculpture network ask itself:” It wants to create recognition for the singularity and social relevance of three dimensional art.” The next official meeting on this subject will be held on 2nd July 2009 in Kostanjevica, Slovenia. Our correspondent for Eastern Europe, Andrej Srakar in cooperation with the museum “Gallery Bozidar Jakac, Kostanjjevica na Krki” has organized a little symposium on the subject “protection of monument, public sculpture and cultural heritage”. More information can be foand on page 3 of this news letter. Today Our network allows us easily find conversation partners, with whom we can develop this project and through which our society will perhaps see that it is worth it to see and preserve our artistic treasures and cultural heritage in the public space/sphere. Perhaps you have concrete ideas on this subject? It is exciting to experience how close a mutual passion for sculpture can bond lovers of this genre of art- often without us being conscious of it. But once we become aware of it, the excitement is palpable. I hope to see a large number of you again on Saturday, the 4th of July 2009, to our anniversary in the sculpture studio of BBK Berlin. With kind regards, Ralph Kirberg Chairman p.s. here is the link to Hans Kratzer: http://www.sueddeutsche.de/C5d38R/2900246/Hochgeruehmt-and-dochvernachlaessigt.html 2 Newsletter 06-2009 B Events and News VIII International Sculpture Symposium in Liechtenstein From the 15th - 18th of October 2009 its time again: sculpture network invites you to the annual symposium. This time we will meet in Vaduz, Liechtenstein, to discuss the topic “sculpture, architecture- public space”. The main speaker for the academic part is, amongst others, Rita McBride and Gloria Friedman, as well as the architect Christian Kerez and the bridge architect Jörg Conzett. On the terrace of the Palazzo Venier die Leoni you can experience the Tower made of corten-steel, which overlooks the Canale Grande with its gothic style windows and towers. Until September 20th the Palazzo will show the exhibition “Robert Rauschenberg: Gluts” with 40 sculptures out of international collections. Until the end of the year you can also visit an exhibition about Italian futurism. In 1995 the gallery opened the Nasher Sculpture garden: here you can see one of the most important collections of modern and contemporary sculptures with sculptures from the Peggy Guggenheim collections and pieces out of the famous collection of Raymond and Patsy Nasher. This collection is constantly changing and there will be many new pieces on display this year. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venetia is one of the five Guggenheim-Museums which are enclosed in the Guggenheim Foundation. It has been founded by the legendary art collector Peggy Guggenheim (1898-1979). The core of her collection she put together between 1938 and 1947. It consists of many important pieces especially from the cubism, surrealism and abstract expressionism. For the biennale in Venetia Guggenheim presented her collection in 1948 for the first time in Europe. The following year she bought a palace from the 18th century next to the Canale Grande, the Palazzo Nenier dei Leoni, and lived there for 30 years until she opened it as a museum. 1979 she donated the palace and her collection to the Guggenheim © The Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice . The museum has been expanded between 1993 and 1995 by a wing which hosts changing exhibitions. The Guggenheim Foundation also focuses on the USA Pavilion of the biennale which it bought in 1986 from the MOMA New York. This year Bruce Nauman is representing the USA with “Tropological Gardens”. The title “metamorphosed gods” is intended to point out the changes within the view of the gods in the classic antique: In Greek classic the gods represented dignity and serious intentions, later they pointed out elegance and grace. The Romans took the traditional statues and gave them individual faces in order to assign the gods greatness onto themselves. In Madrid the gods have been lying to the feet of the visitors: about 270.000 visitors attended the exhibition between November 2008 and April 2009. We wish similar to Dresden, the exhibition is on display till 27th September. The “Japanese Palais” which is surroanded by a beautiful park is hosting this event August the Strong planned this phantastic palace for his china collection. A very exciting catalogue has been published alongside this exhibition: VERWANDELTE GÖTTER - Antike Skulpturen des Museo del Prado zu Gast in Dresden. Catalogue edited by Stephan F. Schröder. Retrospective“ im Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao (E) Juan Munoz sculptures have an extraordinary physical presence in which silence and loneliness play a very important part. His acrobats, dwarfs, dancers and Asian types stand next to the famous human figures with globate basis. They seem to interact and communicate with each other – that’s why they are known as the “Escenas der conversacion”. Juan Munoz (Madrid, 1953 – Ibiza, 2001) has been one of the most important Spanish sculptors. From 5 Newsletter 06-2009 1984, the year of his first single exhibition, until his early death 16 years later he only had a liwithed in order to produce an exceptional piece of art. After receiving the Premio Nacional der Artes Plasticas in 2000 he had been invited to the Turbine Hall at Tate modern art in London as the first Spanish artist ever. He died two month later at the peak of his career just before a big retro perspective was about to open at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington. The exhibition is open till 28th September, and then from 31st October 2009 until 18th January 2010 at the Fandacion Serralves; Oporto. It is the third edition of the Skulptura which has been foanded in 1999 and always takes place in 5 year intervals. The promoters of the Skulptura 2009 are keen on making the development, and different dimensions of sculpturing visual. The following of our members are participating: Adrian Bütikofer, Daniel Hardmeier, Martina Lauinger, Linhard Nicolay, Renata Schalcher, Jürg Stäheli, Bruno Steiger and Suter & Bult. Further information: http://www.skulptura.ch Miroslaw Struzik (PL) takes part in Dublin (IRL) As a special service our artist members receive a list once a month with all applications for exhibitions, Symposia etc. With regard to our publication ins February 2009 Miroslaw Struzik applied for the “Sculpture in Context” – advertisement which is hosted by the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin. His sculpture “The sleeping” has been selected to be on display from 3rd September until 16th October. “Sculpture in Context” which will be held this year for the 8th time is the largest open-air exhibition in Ireland. More than 100 artists have been picked to respond creatively on the beautiful settings of the garden. Chris Peterson (NL) at “Uchinuki Project” (JN) The city of Saijo with its perfect location in a highland dip with many springs is known for its excellent water and sake. A sculpture symposium will take place here this year, it is known as the “Uchinuki Project” and just recently also invites international artists. I have been very lucky to be able to work there in April/May this year. I wanted to create a sculpture for the Tanbara Cultural Centre which is part of Saijo. As in many of my sculptures I wanted to integrate some Japanese elements as well. During the opening ceremony a Buddhist priest whistled a “Horgagai” (a large conch). He explained to me that this is the soand of the ocean. I asked him if there was a similar thing for the soand of the mountains. He replied: “The sea, the water and die mountains are one part of a whole and therefore this soand represents both: Sea and Mountain.” I foand this very inspiring and asked myself: If sea and mountain are one would I sea the waves of the water in the mountains? Is the water shimmering through stone? Because stone used to be fluid ages ago before it became solid – will it be fluid again in my hands? Aroused by these thoughts I produced a sculpture made from 4 elements. You create a new space if placed to each other, which builds a dialogue but also tension between them. I worked the elements of water in the surface of two stones. It is a start of the explanation of the abstract to the audience. I ask questions in order to encourage silence with the spectator, to get him to focus on what is important and in the hope to let him see the essence of water. Reflecting on that time I realised that my thoughts have been pushed into a more spiritual direction. I remember the opening when a Japanese artist came up to me and said I had a Japanese way of looking at things. I don’t know if this was just a polite 7 Newsletter 06-2009 gesture. However one thing became clear to me: My view of things had changed I need less explanations. I feel much better and privileged for getting this chance. Chris Peterson (Chris Peterson is a stone artist from Zwolle/Netherlands http://www.bastarto.com . Together with several friends he foanded the “ZWISS – Zwolle International Sculpture Space” – http://www.zwiss.nl ) “Phoenix” von Oliver Ritter in Eschborn (D) The Phoenix is a mythical bird which burns in order to re-emerge from its ashes. This expectation finds itself in the expression “As a phoenix from its ashes”. It stands for something that is believed to be lost but re-emerges with brilliance. This happened to Oliver Ritter: he believed to have lost his Phoenix when he received the job to create a roand-about in Frankfurt. The roand-about is located in the industrial park “Camp Phoenixpark” and that’s why the Eschborner picked is figure of the Phoenix. Since metal and fire are his elements it was clear how to present it: The sculpture literally came from the ashes, because it was revealed in a spectacular firehappening. Oliver Ritter packed the sculpture with straw and paper in order to light it. Andra Lichtenstein hides sculptures behind a pretty antiseptic title. A sculpture guide has rarely been so inspiring. Very well written descriptions with expert clues characterise each place, which Lichtenstein visited and chose through conversations and recherché. However it leaves enough space for own interpretations. A five part arrangement describes different appearances of sculptures and installations which the book encounters: Artist gardens, sculpture parks, art in the countryside and in cities, museum gardens, happenings for art in free space. Lichtenstein focuses on tourist attractions like the biennale in Venice. Fattoria di Celle the famous collection of Giuliano Gori is not a secret any more. Even a project like “Arte Sella” in Trentino which focuses on art surrounded by nature is fairly known and respected. However have you found your way to the seven part sculpture ensemble “site transitore”? It is just 30 km away from Siena. Do you know “Il grande Cretto” bay Alberto Burri in Sicily? Or have you heard of “Hortus Conlusus” by Mimmo Paladino ind Benevento? 54 places and some of her work Lichtenstein describes very precisely. Further projects and three Symposia are accounted for. The headlines give clues on opening hours, close by exhibitions, museums and galleries. The pictures are kind of touristy since you will hardly ever find these perfect light conditions yourself. The landscape architect Andra Lichtenstein guides into the free space art of Italy and its development since the 60’s. Using phrases like “arte ambiental” and “arte ambientata” she points out what the visitor can expect: Artwork that has been formed in order to make a connection with a place and its history – or artwork that has been placed in the countryside or a city later on in order to make these spaces more art related. Gabriele Perretta who is a professor for history and theory of semiotics and contemporary art critic guides you around Italy and explains the forms of art you encounter. 50 artists are described in little biographies. Continuative literature, mostly Italian, and internet addresses make this book a very good resource, which is not only focusing on Italian sculptures. A map gives you rough orientation. Adoption, inspiration, information. What more to expect from a handy sculpture guide? A must for every sculpture enthusiast in Italy. Autor: Eberhard Hauff (Our member E.
