Ein Appartementblock in der Stadthölle von Caracas. Hier lebt der
9-jährige Junior mit seiner arbeitslosen, verwitweten Mutter Marta und
seinem kleinen Bruder auf engstem Raum. Junior spielt nicht gern Fußball mit den anderen Jungs des Blocks, stattdessen träumt er von langem,
glattem Haar für das Foto im Schuljahrbuch. Am liebsten so fancy wie
ein Popsänger. Ihm wird sein Aussehen immer wichtiger, und das geht
seiner Mutter zunehmend auf die Nerven. Schließlich sorgt sie sich insgeheim, Junior könne schwul sein und sieht darin eine besondere Herausforderung für das Leben in der Stadt. Je stärker Junior um ihre Liebe
kämpft, desto härter behandelt Marta ihren Sohn …
Präzise beobachtet Mariana Rondón die komplexen und verwirrenden
Gefühle, die das Aufwachsen mit sich bringt und beschäftigt sich dabei
subtil mit den Themen Rassismus, Homophobie und Gewalt in der
venezolanischen Gesellschaft.
Biografie
Die Regisseurin Mariana Rondón studierte an der International School
of Cinema and Television in Kuba, wo sie ihre Produzentin Marité Ugás
und die Kamerafrau Micaela Cajahuaringa kennenlernte. Seither machen die drei gemeinsam Filme. Ihr Studium schloss Rondón 1990 ab
und gründete dann gemeinsam mit Ugás die Produktionsfirma Caracas
Sudaca Films in Caracas. Nach seinem Sensationserfolg beim Film­
festival von San Sebastián 2013 (Bester Film) wurde Pelo Malo weltweit
auf vielen Festivals ausgezeichnet.

An apartment block in the urban hell of Caracas. Here, in cramped
conditions, the nine-year-old Junior lives with his unemployed, widowed
mother Marta and his little brother. Junior doesn’t like to play football
with the other kids on the block. Instead, he dreams of long straight hair
so that he can produce a smart photo for the school yearbook. Preferably
looking as cool as a pop singer. As his appearance becomes all the more
important to him, it increasingly gets him into trouble with his mother.
For she worries in secret that he might be gay and sees this as a special
challenge to life in the big city. And the more Junior tries to win her
affections, the harder she treats her son …
Mariana Rondón closely observes the complex and confusing emptions
that growing up can entail and also takes a subtle look at various issues
of racism, homophobia and violence in Venezuelan society.
Biography
Film director Mariana Rondón studied at the International School of
Cinema & Television in Cuba where she met producer Marité Ugas and
camera operator Micaela Cajahuaringa. The three have been making
films together ever since. Ms Rondón completed her studies in 1990
and, together with Ms Ugas, then co-founded the Ugas Caracas Sudaca
production company in Caracas. Following its sensational success at the
San Sebastian Film Festival 2013 (Best Film), Pelo Malo has picked up
many other awards at festivals around the world.
