Linz, 21. – 22. Oktober 2015 KEYNOTES – KURZBESCHREIBUNG/ ABSTRACTS THEMA WIE KOMMT DIE SPRACHE IN DEN KOPF? Vortragende DR. Biographie Elisabeth Pölzleitner HOW TECHNOLOGY CAN REVOLUTIONISE FEEDBACK? RUSSELL STANNARD Russell Stannard will present his ground breaking work on the use of technology to provide feedback to students. This work has generated widespread media coverage in the UK and abroad and led to Russell winning the Time Higher "Outstanding Initiative" in ICT and the British Council "Technology" award. The idea has been widely adopted in the educational world and research is taken place in various countries. Russell will present some of the research as well as presenting the most recent work he has done. A practical talk with lots of examples of how feedback can be revolutionised with the use of technology. Biography Russel Stannard DEVELOPING LEARNER AUTONOMY IN THE FACE OF CONFLICTING DEMANDS IN VOCATIONAL LANGUAGE CLASSES DR. ROD BOLITHO Language teachers and their learners are under pressure from so many different directions today. Ministry guidelines require compliance with European and wider international standards of proficiency, parents are concerned about their children’s employment prospects in a competitive job market, employers have started to look for multilingual recruits in even the most straightforward of positions, and students themselves face examinations that to them seem at best daunting and at worst downright scary. The stakes have never been higher for learners and teachers alike. The pressure to focus language classes on preparation for examinations rather than on the development of all-round communicative competence in a foreign language is immense and it is not surprising that some teachers succumb to it. What often gets crowded out in the process is the notion of language learning as education, with all that this entails. Yet there is scope within the broad framework of competence-based teaching for teachers to enrich their students’ learning experience and to play a part in preparing them as citizens of a society where values such as critical thinking, teamwork and co-operative endeavour may be held as counterweights to the pre-eminent orientation towards competition, compliance and ruthless ambition. In this talk, I will look at some of the options open to language teachers, with particular emphasis on how they can help their learners to develop autonomous learning strategies that will carry them through to those much-feared examinations and beyond. Biography Rod Bolitho MODERATION Maga. Biographie Belinda Steinhuber DR. RUSSEL STANNARD RUSSELL IS AN EXPERT IN TECHNOLOGY IN LANGUAGE EDUCATION AND ASSESSMENT, AND AN ELTONS WINNER FOR HIS TEACHER TRAINING VIDEOS WEBSITE AND NEWSLETTER. TAKEN FROM HIS HOMEPAGE … PIONEERING FEEDBACK IDEA In June 2006 in the Modern English Teacher, I wrote about the use of screen capture software as a way of providing feedback to students. It generated enormous interest with articles in the Times Higher, Guardian and Independent national newspapers. This was followed by several awards and even an appearance on TV. Here is an example of the idea. I have opened a student's written work onto my screen and then recorded myself giving the feedback using screen capture software. I have then sent the student the video. I have uploaded an example for you to see though it may take a few moments to upload Example of screencast feedback Here is a second idea. I am providing feedback on the student's written piece. This focuses more on grammar. 2nd Example of screencast feedback THE IDEA BEGINS TO TAKE OFF Since 2006 I have presented my work in no less than 26 COUNTRIES including Japan, China, the USA, Russia, Norway, Sweden, Chile, Iceland, Germany, Armenia, the UK and many more. This includes work with ministries in Chile, Azerbaijan, China and Greece. It has generated widespread media coverage. It was covered on the TV in France and my work was included in a report submitted to the UK government in 2009. Here are a few of the articles. For more academic work, see below. Using screen cast software. The Open University experimented with JING. I first presented the use of JING at IATEFL in 2010. In 2008 I shifted from using Camtasia to using JING for providing feedback. It is a very simple tool to use and one that I have presented all over the world. ROD BOLITHO - BIOGRAPHY Rod Bolitho has been Academic Director at Norwich Institute for Language Education since 2007 and before that was Assistant Dean of International Education at The University College of St Mark & St John, Plymouth from 1989 to 2006. In the course of his career Rod has worked as consultant to a number of overseas projects (in countries including Romania, India, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Croatia) mainly in the field of materials design, curriculum development and trainer training. He is currently actively engaged in a teacher education reform project in Uzbekistan, a vocational sector curriculum project in Romania and a British Council CPD initiative in India. In the past few years he has been a regular contributor to international conferences in Malaysia, Turkey, Switzerland, Spain, India, Austria, Portugal, Colombia and Egypt. In addition to Discover English (with Brian Tomlinson) for Macmillan, he has co-authored several books most recently Trainer Development with Tony Wright. He is working on a CPD handbook for India and English Teaching Professional is currently carrying a series of four articles on 'Holistic Approaches to Grammar'. Rod's main professional interests are in Language Awareness, Materials Development and Professional Development. He is very wary of the impact of globalisation, and of corporate 'bigness', on education in general and ELT in particular. Rod Bolitho has been involved in teacher development projects in Austria for years and has gained detailed insight into the situation of upper secondary vocational education. He has worked closely with the CEBS-team on a number of occasions and repeatedly contributed to the CEBS conference “Sprachgastein”. Rod is married and lives in Norwich, but despite his Cornish surname he is an exiled scouser and misses both the city of Liverpool and the chance to visit Liverpool FC home games at Anfield. MAG a .
