All M4A1 had a single-piece cast steel upper hull. The late production variant of the M4A1 big hatch upper hull was used for mid / late production tanks with the VVSS suspension and the final type of M4A1 with the HVSS suspension. All late M4A1 had the 76mm T23 turret, the 75mm turret was not fitted on this type of hull. A number of late M4A1 had the 105mm uparmoured howitzer turret. The M4A1 Sheramn late production was used from the US Forces, from British Army and other Allied Armies in WW2 and saw comabt service between 1944 and 1945 on all frontiers. As M1 Sherman the M4A1 was the first modern Israeli tank, some vehicles were later converted from the Israeli industry into M51 Supersherman. The lower hull side walls of the Italeri kit are to low. The lower hull must be modified as shown for the MR Models upper hull and final drive housing. Cut from upper edge of lower hull rear wall approx. 2mm and glue MR Models air-filters in position. When the rear wall is glued to the lower hull, remove carefully the idler wheel mounts and fit the MR Models parts. Im Pazifik trugen USMC Panzer meist keine US Sterne, Panzer der US Army hatten weiße US Sterne ohne Ring. W-306986 oder US Army W-3...... MR-72038 Camouflage and Markings Sherman tanks of US Armored Forces Sherman tanks have been used from US Army and USMC, first combat service of US Shermans was in North Africa in 1943 and in 1942 in the PTO. The USMC had mainly M4A2 and M4A3, the US Army preferred M4, M4 Composite, M4A1 and M4A3. The tanks of US Army and USMC had a uniform camouflage colour in Olive Drab. For USMC tanks Forest Green as base colour was specified, but seldom used. In 1941 exact rules for camouflage patterns of US Army tanks were made, but until 1943 the most US tanks served in the uniform Olive Drab. From 1943 some US Army tanks in Europe received additional camouflage patches in other colours. In the PTO the most US Army tanks served until the end of the war most times without additional camouflage painting, but USMC tanks carried often a camouflage pattern. For the camouflage painting of US Army tanks were at the end of the war 12 different „Federal Standard“ (FS) camouflage colours avaiable, which were used from the USMC too: Olive Drab Forest Green Light Green Dark Green Sand Desert Sand Field Drab Earth Brown Earth Yellow Loam Earth Red Black FS 34087 FS 34079 FS 34151 FS 34102 FS 30277 FS 30279 FS 30118 FS 30099 FS 30257 FS 34086 FS 30117 FS 37038 basic colour Us Army and USMC basic colour USMC, used seldom ? ? often used as additional colour by the USMC ? ? often used as additional colour by the US Army often used as additional colour by the US Army ? often used as additional colour by the USMC often used as additional colour by the USMC, winter camouflage colour US Army Europe (black bands on white winter wash) sample for camouflage patches US Army Particularlies Many tanks of US Army in Europe had the lower hull sides entirely of partitionally painted in white. This was shown the camouflage manuals and should break the silhouette of the vehicle. Sometimes also the undersides of the gun barrels were painted in white or yellow, some tanks had the turret roof painted in yellow or more seldom in white. In the PTO USMC tanks had often the turret roof painted in white or yellow. US Stars and Markings For the service in North Africa and Europe principially the white US star with ring should be used. But the US star was not always or not with the ring applied. Often the US star was painted over with black or Olive Drab. In the PTO the USMC tank had normally no US stars, tanks of the US Army carried the star in white without the ring. US Army tanks had bumper codes at the hull front and hull rear in white or yellow, on both sides of upper hull a vehicle number as U.S.A. W-306986 or US Army W-3..... (early vehicles) and later simplified as U.S.A. 3011191 was stencilled. These numbers were painted in Blue Drab or Signal Yellow or later in white only. Some individuell unit codes and markings, platoon numbers, geometrical signs, coloured markings etc. have been used too. The USMC had an own system of markings, unit codes, vehicle numbers and s.o., due to the unconventional use of the official markings or own markings there are many possiblities for to make markings on model tanks.
