FIRST EDITION. Two additional editions appeared in 2008. The poet Eugénio de
Andrade, born in Póvoa de Atalaia, concelho do Fundão, lived in Lisbon and Coimbra
before settling in Porto, where he eventually created the Fundação Eugénio de Andrade.

The author’s Teoria do teatro moderno: a hora zero, which originally appeared in 1982
(2nd edition, “reformulada” 2003), was awarded the Prémio de “Ensaio” of the Associação
Portuguesa de Escritores in 1980. A novelist, dramatist, poet and literary critic, with a
profound interest in the relationship between computers and literature, the author has
also written stories for children. He has been one of the leading practitioners in Portugal,
if not the leading practitioner, of poetry composed by computers, and is also a theoretician
for the movement. He was on the faculty of the Universidade Fernando Pessoa, Porto,
where he founded the Centro de Estudos de Texto Informático e Ciberliteratura. As of
c. 2007, he was on the faculty of the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo,
Instituto Politécnico do Porto.

Important work of non-fiction, this is a memoir / evaluation of Angolan politics and
civil war from February 2000. The author, poet and writer of fiction, was born in Angola
in 1941, and contributed toward the “modernidade” of Angolan poetry at the beginning of the 1970s. He received the Prémio National de Literatura de Angola in 1989. An
anthropologist with a Ph.D. from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris,
he was “Professor titular” at the Universidade de Luanda at the time this book appeared;
previously he was visiting professor at the universities of São Paulo and Coimbra. With
at least three volumes of poetry and three of fiction to his credit, he has also published
two other important works of non-fiction: Ana a Manda (1989), and Vou lá visitar pastores:
exploração epistolar de um percurso angolano em território Kuvale (1999).

Florbela de Alma da Conceição Espanca (1894-1930) was described by Bell as “unquestionably one of the greatest if not the greatest Portuguese poetess of all time. Her sonnets
are poignant outpourings of her emotional life, and display her accomplished art as a
sonneteer.” For Saraiva and Lopes she is “uma das mais notáveis personalidades líricas
isoladas, pela intensidade de um transcendido erotismo feminino, sem precedentes
entre nós.” She published her first book of poetry (Livro de Mágoas) in 1919, and her
second (Livro de Soror Saüdade) in 1923. By 1974 her Sonetos completos had gone through

Manuel de Freitas, born 1972, is a published literary critic and art historian. He has
published a brief essay about the poetry of Al Berto, A noite dos espelhos (1999), Uma espécie
de crime: apresentação do rosto de Herberto Helder (2001), two other volumes of essays, as well
as at least 44 volumes of his own poetry. He edited at least six anthologies of poems by
other contemporary authors, and along with Inês Dias has been responsible for editing
the important poetry magazine Telhados de vidro. According to a friend whose opinion we
respect, Manuel de Freitas is the best twenty-first-century Portuguese poet! The present
volume includes essays on Luiz Pacheco, Herberto Helder, and ten others, followed by
a poem. All had appeared previously in assorted reviews, newspapers and magazines,
with the exception of the essay “O post-scriptum em 2010” (pp. [161]-166), which was
previously unpublished.

These brief essays are patterned after The Characters, attributed to Theophrastus (ca.
371-ca. 287 BC). Each of the 30 moral types is accompanied by a humorous illustration,
or caricature. [Lourenço’s translation of Homer’s Odyssey has been acclaimed by specialists and critics. Born in Lisbon in 1963, Lourenço spent his childhood in Oxford. In 1990
he has been a member of the corpo docente of the Faculdade de Letras, Universidade
de Lisboa. He has translated Hipólito and Íon, and has published literary criticism in the
reviews Journal of Hellenic Studies, Classical Quarterly, Euphrosyne, Humanitas, and ColóquioLetras, as well as collaborating in the newspapers Independente, Expresso, and Público.
The author’s first three works of fiction are a trilogy of novels, based to a great extent
on his interests in the classics and Camões. His first two “romances” in the series, Pode
um desejo imenso and O curso das estrelas, were followed by À beira do mundo. A máquina
do arcanjo (2006), described as semi-autobiographical essays, is a continuation of the
author’s Amar não acaba (2004)].

the Prémio Abel Salazar para Ensaio by the Sociedade Portuguesa de Escritores Médicos,

This work aims at establishing connections between Portugal and the Brazilian author
Cecília Meireles (1901-1964), a canonical name of Brazilian Modernism, one of the great
female poets in the Portuguese language, and widely considered the best poetess from
Brazil, though she combatted the word “poetess” because of gender discrimination. The
book is the adaptation of an exceptional master’s thesis, defended at the Universidade do
Porto. Mota displays diligent research in her analysis of poems and letters among other
documents by Meireles to show clear connections to Portugal and Portuguese authors,
including Meireles’s influence on contemporary Portuguese authors. Also of note is the
extensive bibliography of Meireles’s published work in both Portugal and Brazil, as well
as a record of unpublished work in which the theme of Portugal is treated.

Portuguese futurist author, artist and book illustrator Almada Negreiros (São Tomé
e Príncipe, 1893–Lisbon 1970), closely linked to Fernando Pessoa, was a collaborator in
Orpheu. He was also responsible for Portugal futurista, and much more.

Pessanha (1867-1926) helped found the Portuguese symbolist movement while
studying at the University of Coimbra, where he and several friends (Eugénio de Castro,
António Nobre, Alberto de Oliveira and Alberto Osório de Castro) published Os Insubmissos and Boémia Nova. Pessanha seems to have been indifferent about whether his own
works were published, and only a few of his poems appeared in the 1880’s and 1890’s,
scattered in periodicals. In 1894 he left for Macau, where he spent most of the rest of his
life. On a trip back to Lisbon in 1916, he dictated many of his works (which he knew by
heart, and rarely wrote down), some of which appeared in the review Centauro. Clepsydra
appeared four years later, from the press of his cousin Ana de Castro Osório. A second
edition appeared in 1945, and there have been a number of editions since.

Miguel Real’s latest historical novel, A Guerra dos Mascates (2011), is based on the struggles
between small merchants and aristocrats which mobilized the entire populations of the
cities of Recife and Olinda early in the eighteenth century. His novel As memórias secretas
da rainha D. Amélia (2010) is a document severely critical of Portugal and the Portuguese;
in these fictitious memoirs the queen finds the Portuguese elites both ignorant and inept.
According to a publisher’s blurb on the front cover of the author’s novella A ministra
(2009), “To rise in life is in her blood. Her ambition? To become a government minister.”
Miguel Real’s historical novel O último negreiro (2006) tells the story of Francisco Felix de
Sousa, called the greatest Portuguese slave trader, who lived in Bahia and Benim from

the mid-eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century, building an empire of land, ships, and
men. Father of more than 100 offspring, Sousa continued to trade in slaves even after the
slave trade was abolished. Real’s historical novel A voz da terra (2005; 2nd edition 2005),
awarded the Prémio Fernando Namora, 2006, was about the Marquês de Pombal and the
1755 Lisbon earthquake. The author’s novel A visão de Túndalo por Eça de Queirós (2000)
was awarded the Prémio Literário LER by the Fundação Círculo de Leitores. He was
previously awarded the Prémio de Revelação APE / IPLB, Ensaio Literário / 1995. Born
in Lisbon in 1953, Miguel Real has published a number of works of literary history and
criticism, as well as secondary school literary manuals, and a novel in which Plato, near
death, confesses to having invented Socrates, using an honored old slave as his model.
He has written for the theater in collaboration with Filomena Oliveira. He also wrote
Memórias de Branca Dias (2003), a novel based on the legendary Branca Dias, a matriarch
of sixteenth-century Pernambuco, one of the first female plantation owners in Brazil.

Roberto de Mesquita was born at Santa Cruz das Flores in 1871. Except for one brief
trip to continental Portugal, he spent all of his life in the Azores, where he worked as a
treasury official. His only publications during his lifetime were in symbolist journals,
such as Os Novos and Ave Azul. Eight years after his death in 1923, his widow published
Almas cativas, which went virtually unnoticed. In 1939 Vitorino Nemésio called attention
to this work, and then Gaspar Simões called it the most important work of Portuguese
symbolism after that of Camilo Pessanha.

title essay, “Antes das Playstations” (pp. [73]-91), introducing the catalogue. Interspersed
with the catalogue are brief essays, presumably by Rêgo and Castelo-Branco, on Jules

The present work gives an appreciation of Alberto de Lacerda through examples in
his “espólio” of letters, postcards, presentation inscriptions in books and photographs

(who he never met, but admired as a poet and friend of poets, despite Lacerda’s distaste

Reis, João Bénard da Costa, and more. The author’s novella, Cláudia telefonou dois anos
depois, appeared in 1992. It was followed by another novella, Os amantes prendem nos
braços tudo o que lhes dói, published in 2004. Fernando Vale was one of the founders of
Relógio d’Agua Editores in 1983, and has been its editorial director from the founding.
He has translated into Portuguese Virginia Woolf, Katherine Mansfield, Djuna Barnes,
Marguerite Yourcenar, Marguerite Duras, Le Clézio, Foucault, Ernesto Sabato, Javier
Marias and Fernando Savater.

Janis Joplin, Elton John, and a wide variety of other subjects. The author, a psychiatrist
born in Porto in 1949, has published fiction, essays, scientific and popular scientific
studies: O sexo dos anjos, O fio invisível, Muros, Conversas no papel, Estilhaços, O tempo dos
espelhos, and Estes difíceis amores.

The first 45 pages comprise a critical introduction, including discussion of the different editions of the work and questions of authorship: the work was published with
Vieira’s name on the title page, and was variously ascribed to Antonio Sousa de Macedo,
Antonio da Sylva e Sousa, and Duarte Ribeiro de Macedo, but has now been definitively
attributed to Costa. The Arte de furtar, a curious and amusing treatise on the noble art of
lying and thieving that became an often re-printed classic of Portuguese literature, first
appeared with the false imprint Amsterdam: Officina Elvizeriana [sic], 1652, but was
probably printed in Lisbon ca. 1744.
This monument of Baroque prose is a moralizing and often amusing satirical literary
obra prima on lying and thieving of all kinds, private and official, civil and military. Today
it is firmly attributed to the Jesuit Father Manuel da Costa (1601-1667). Possibly the most
readable Portuguese work of the seventeenth century, it is an emblematic literary text of
the Restauração, and the highest point of the Portuguese literature of customs from the
sixteenth through eighteenth centuries. Completed in 1652, in the lifetime of D. João IV,
and dedicated to the king by the author, it was only published almost a century later. The
book was an immediate success. There have been many subsequent editions, including
three more with the false imprint Amsterdam: Na Officina de Martinho Schagen, 1744,
but in reality by the same Lisbon printer as the first edition, probably actually printed
in 1744 or 1745. Like the first edition it was printed without proper licenses or privileges. Quite a few editions have been published in recent years. With few exceptions,
Vieira’s name continued to appear on the title page, probably due mainly to its promise
of editorial success.
Almost immediately upon publication, the attribution of authorship to Father
António Vieira on the title page was disputed. The names of Thomé Pinherio da Veiga,
João Pinto Ribeiro, Duarte Ribeiro de Macedo, António da Silva e Sousa, António de
Sousa de Macedo, and D. Francisco Manuel de Melo were put forth. Only in 1940 did
the Jesuit researcher Father Francisco Rodrigues propose the name of the relatively
obscure Jesuit Manuel da Costa, presenting documentary evidence at the Congresso do
Mundo Português held in Lisbon in July of that year and publishing the following year

that this could be true, but the authorship of Costa was convincingly confirmed by J.
Pereira Gomes, S.J.,”O autor da Arte de Furtar” in Brotéria, LXXV, n.º 4, October 1962, and
“Manuel da Costa, autor da Arte de Furtar”, Colóquio n.º 34, June 1965, pp. 42-45. Further
confirmation appeared in the present edition. The authorship of Manuel da Costa is
now generally accepted, though brief texts by another author or authors may have been
inserted at the time of publication.
The Arte de furtar was prohibited by the Spanish Inquisition in 1755 and was listed in
the Indices expurgatorios …. published in Madrid, 1790. Curiously, it was never prohibited
by the Inquisition in Portugal.
