RECONSTRUCTION
1 – 2 March 2012
Instructional Course University of Basel, Switzerland
Hands-on Workshop on Cadavers
Institute of Anatomy University of Basel, Switzerland
COURSE OBJECTIVES

Dr. Geert Pagenstert, MD
Universitätsspital Basel, Switzerland
Dear Colleagues,
The daily routine of Sports Orthopaedics with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and meniscus
surgery is often complicated by concomitant injuries to the other knee ligaments, cartilage and incipient joint degeneration. In addition, the treatment of the unstable patella likewise raises significant
difficulties particularly when associated with incipient joint degeneration. Therefore this instructional
course wants to concentrate on these advanced problems of knee reconstruction.
The topic of advanced knee reconstruction will be presented by renowned national and international
speakers and the various techniques demonstrated during cadaver surgery. Participants will be given
the opportunity to deepen their knowledge through discussions and hands on cadaver workshops
due to a high instructor – participant index of 1:3.
We were happy to run this «1st Advanced Knee Course» at the venerable domed section hall of the
Basel University Institute of Anatomy with especially Thiel-embalmed (natural-soft) cadavers. With this
traditional facility we wish to provide optimal requirements for effective knowledge exchange to prevent
or delay total joint replacement for our active patients. With this course the University of Basel wants to
close the gap between the standard sports orthopaedics course and a course for knee arthroplasty.
The course coincides with the «fifth season» in Basel, the internationally distinguished Basel «Fasnacht» carnival. Traditionally musicians in «Larven» costumes march in a «Mini-Cortège» processions
through the streets of old Basel-City in an attempt to drive winter away.
We will be happy to welcome you to this special course here in this special time for Basel!
Yours sincerely,
Dr. Geert Pagenstert, MD
