The importance of getting kids to develop a love for reading early on often correlates with a love for learning, a passion for lifelong reading, and so many other positive traits that ultimately lead to the empowerment needed for success. The Bible says your body is the "temple" of God. In 1Corinthians 3:16-17 it says, "Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is sacred, and you are that temple." Look around your home. Do you have a collection of literary gems? Do you have more books than toys? The library is always a great place to find wonderful books, which we hope you frequent at least every other week—a ritual which many families start before children could even walk. Look for and share these books with a positive message with your child soon: A Bad Case of the Stripes by David Shannon All I See is Part of Me by Chara Curtis An Awesome Book of Thanks by Dallas Clayton Have you Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all. — Jacqueline Kennedy Mrs. Kim Cochran ☺ Principal [email protected] SPRINGBOARD There will be no chess on Wednesday, November 7, due to minimum day schedule. Classes will resume next Wednesday, November 14. If your child was not able to participate in Springboard science because conflicting activities such as soccer they are in luck! As soccer games end in the coming weeks, students can join science for the remaining last sessions of the Fall 2012 semester (session dates 11/13, 11/27, 12/4). Classes are $10 per session. Please contact Kim Boyer ([email protected] for registration information). Thank you for continuing to let us know if your child will not be able to attend their Springboard class on a particular day. How are teaching your children to treat their "temple"? Are you providing real and perfect food God made for complete nourishment or only food products that were created by man? 1. Eat FRESH vegetables and fruits. Canned, frozen or processed foods should not make up more than 15% of any meal. 2. Whole grains should make up 25% of one meal per day. 3. Seeds, nuts and berries, oh my! Great for munchies and between meal snacks. The health of Americans is the worst ever in history. We have created a culture that believes that a well-balanced meal consists of chicken nuggets, french fries and a soda. According to the most recent statistics released by the Centers for Disease Control, an estimated 64% of adults, age 20 years or older are considered overweight or obese. Whole foods, the way God intended it to be, should be consumed for our own sake. Remember, wellness and good health is a choice. Honor your body and God’s "temple". Parents are discouraged from bringing fast food for their child’s lunch each day. Please do not bring soda for your child to consume at lunch. Research on the relationship between a healthful lifestyle and academic achievement supports this equation: good nutrition + exercise = optimal learning. Previously, students took the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS). The Iowa Assessments are different from the ITBS in many ways, especially in how results are reported. The Gospel readings for the Sundays in November 2012, are taken from St. Mark and St. John and are from Year B, Cycle 2. November 4 In this Gospel Jesus tells the Scribes to love your neighbors as yourself. November 11 The Gospel relates the parable of the widow and the coins. November 18 This Gospel is about the second coming of Christ. November 25 This Gospel is about the exchange between Pilate and Jesus. The Iowa Assessments will provide valuable information about the yearly academic growth of students. It will also provide strong indicators of college readiness. Student academic growth is monitored based on something called a "standard score". The National Standard Score, describes performance on a continuum from kindergarten through high school. The continuum is based on scores from testing thousands of students and determining where students at certain grade levels fall within a range. The Iowa Assessments also include a National Percentile Ranking . This compares a student's score with others in the nation in the same grade who took the test at the same time of year. Individual student results will be st included with 1 Trimester Report Cards. Parents should contact teacher with questions or concerns. Wednesday November 7 Dismiss @ 12:30pm WASC & Staff Development Campus Care is available. Please be sure to bring your lunch. Service Projects Thank you for your generous donations of Hotel and Sample sized Toiletries. Donations accepted until Friday.
