CHAPTER 13 (p. 173)
In the first part of the text the narrator concentrates
exclusively on the family of Señora Teresina
Cortez, a rather promiscuous lady. She lives
together with her mother and a bunch of children,
whose _________ are beans and tortillas - and
much to the astonishment of doctors, they all look
surprisingly healthy.
But then one year ___________________ due to
long rain, and this despite Teresina's offerings to
the Virgin Mary.
Her situation becomes hopeless, there is no food for them. And now, in the second part of this
chapter, the friends step in and steal whatever food they can to help this poor lady's family.
However, much of this food is too old, so that in the end the friends are shown

"Ihr werdet euch sicher fragen, wie Teresina die Nahrung für ihre Familie beschaffte. Wo
immer Bohnendrescher vorbeigekommen sind, kann man überall, so sie Halt gemacht haben,
große Haufen von Bohnenspreu sehen. Breitet man ein großes Tuch auf den Boden und wirft
man an einem windigen Nachmittag die Spreu von dem Tuch in die Luft, so merkt man, dass
die Drescher nicht unfehlbar sind. Die Arbeit eines Nachmittags kann zwanzig Pfund Bohnen
oder mehr einbringen.
Im Herbst gingen die Vieja und die Kinder, die laufen konnten, über die Felder und worfelten
die Spreu. Die Landbesitzer hatten nichts dagegen, denn sie richteten keinen Schaden an. Es
war ein schlechtes Jahr, wenn die Vieja nicht drei- bis vierhundert Pfund Bohnen sammelte.
Hat man vierhundert Pfund Bohnen im Haus, so braucht man kein Verhungern zu befürchten.
Andere Dinge, Leckereien, wie Zucker, Tomaten, spanischer Pfeffer, Kaffee, Fisch oder
Fleisch, kamen manchmal dank der Mitwirkung der Jungfrau Maria wie durch ein Wunder ins
