A Message from the Pastor
Dear Members and Friends of FELC,
In my pastor’s article for this newsletter, I would like to reflect on the ministry of the “wider
church”. The term “wider church” refers to other settings of the church. Basically, the wider
church is other expressions of the church, beyond the congregation. Most church-going
members only ever experience the congregational aspect of the church. That is, most people
attend worship, meetings, and functions at the congregational level. From time to time,
members will visit other congregations when they are away on vacation or to attend special
occasion worship services such as a baptisms or weddings.
There are many more expressions of the church, which reach wider than the ministry of any
individual congregation. In the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, those other settings
are the area ministries (formerly called conferences), the synod, and the national church. Just
as a congregation has leaders (pastor, council, committees), these other areas of the church
have leaders too. The area ministry has a dean who is a pastor of one of the congregations
within the geographical region of the area ministry, a leadership team which consists of
members from the congregations within the geographical region, and subgroups that work
on specific ministry initiatives. Similarly, the synod is lead by a pastor who is elected to serve
as a bishop. Because of the size of the geographic area he or she has assistants (much like a
large congregation has additional pastors or directors). There is also a synod council which
consists of elected members and pastors from congregations within the synod, as well as
other committees comprised of church members and leaders from congregations within the
synod which oversee other ministries. Lastly, there is the national church. The national
church also has a bishop who is elected from among the pastors of the church, there is a
national church council with elected members from Lutheran congregations, as well as other
committees and groups responsible for specific ministries.
Most people would rather be somewhere else besides in a meeting. But, each expression of
the church has to have meetings and needs people at the meetings. Just as a congregation
gets together for regular meetings to plan ministry, look at budgets, and care for property,
these other expressions of the church also come together for meetings. The Central Toronto
Area Ministry had a meeting in April. Most of our council members and I attended that
meeting. The Eastern Synod had a meeting (called a Convention) in June of last year; FELC
had one of its members there. This month, the national church has a meeting in Edmonton,
and one of FELC’s members will attend. Church structure and meetings take place so that the
work of the Gospel can happen in a somewhat organized and planned way.
This is not unlike how large companies have regional management, corporate management,
and an elected board. The difference between a company and the church is that a company
has its structure, management, and meetings so that it can effectively stay in business and
make a profit. The church is not about making a profit, but is about proclaiming the Gospel,
doing the work of Christ in the world, and changing lives. All of us have been called to do
this when we were baptized. When we were confirmed, we affirmed our baptismal faith and
committed to following Christ.

I know that sometimes congregational life can be draining and discouraging. Sometimes we
run out of ideas and just can’t find enough people to help. Thanks be to God for the ministry
of the wider church. We are not in this alone. There are others who are committed to helping
us, by giving us ideas, by joining with us to do ministry. Sometimes even I dread going to
meetings, giving up an afternoon or a couple of days. But, I go, not because it is my “job” to
be there, but because I know that each time the Holy Spirit fills me with hope and energy. I
leave the meetings with an assurance that God is still caring for the church and that there are
all kinds of possibilities. I know that this feeling is not unique to me; others have told me
they have the same sense after they have participated in wider church ministries.
At the September combined service, we will celebrate reaffirmation of baptism as well as
Holy Communion. This worship experience will remind us of the covenant that God made
with us and give us an opportunity to reaffirm the promises made on our behalf at baptism
and which we made when we were confirmed. It is my hope that it will help to focus and be
a foundation for the congregation’s future ministry, in whichever direction the Holy Spirit
guides.
Have a blessed summer. May it be a time to rest and recharge. I look forward to seeing you
in worship this summer, as we continue in ministry.

News from around the Congregation
On June 7 Axel Harrison Ulrich was baptized into the family of the church. Axel is the son of
Harald and Sonja and the brother of Annika and Katja. He is also the grandson of John and
Christa Ulrich.
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death on May 17 of Ingrid
Kwiatkowski, the mother of our interim pastor Richard Kwiatkowski. Our sympathy goes
out to Pastor Rick and his family.
We mourn the death of Edith Hesas, a longtime member of this church. Edith and Bruno
were married here 65 years ago! Our sympathy goes out to Bruno, Ron, Marlene, Darlene and
the grandchildren.
Birthdays
We would like to congratulate all those with birthdays in July and August. We think in
particular of Else Balsmeier, Karl Kraenzel, Friedel Motsch, Else Kraenzel, Eva Wick, Elsie
Dollekamp, Douglas Shields and Alvine Hilbrecht.

On June 21 we welcomed Saskia Rowley into the First Lutheran family. Saskia is known to
many of you as the daughter of Esther Walter. Saskia is also on our call committee.
The English worship services will start at 11:00 a.m. during the months of July and August.
We encourage all of you to come to the combined service with St. Georges on July 12. St.
George’s Lutheran will be coming to us on that day.
On August 9 we will all be celebrating worship at St. George’s. Please note that the service
there starts at 11:00.
We received a thank you note from the chief executive officer of LOFT. One of their
volunteers Chris Whittaker came to our service on June 21 to explain about LOFT and talk
about its services.
The National Assembly of the ELCIC meets in Edmonton this year. Adrienne Findley-Jones
will represent our congregation at this meeting.
The Seniors met for their final get together before the summer break. There was a lovely
lunch organized by Annie and Linda, the daughters of Friedel Motsch. There were many
other hands helping too. They look forward to their first meeting on September 9.
I would like to thank Manya Brunzema for all the proof reading she does for the newsletter. I
am thankful for another set of eyes looking over the content and the text.
Our picnic lunch on June 21 was enjoyed by all. Thank you to Marilyn Kneller who donated
the chickens and to the rest of you for bringing salads and desserts. A special thank you to
Rita Wagner for organizing the set up and clean up.

Eine Botschaft vom Pastor
der Region, und Untergruppen, die an
speziellen
seelsorgerlichen
Initiativen
arbeiten. Auf ähnliche Weise wird die
Synode von einem Pastor geleitet, der als
Bischof
gewählt
wird.
Weil
sein
Arbeitsgebiet sehr groß ist, hat der Bischof
Assistenten, ähnlich wie eine große
Gemeinde
weitere
Pastoren
oder
Kirchenvorstandsmitglieder
hat.
Des
weiteren gibt es einen Synodenvorstand,
der aus gewählten Mitgliedern und
Pastoren der Gemeinden innerhalb der
Synode stammt. Es gibt auch einen
Synoden-Kirchenrat aus Mitgliedern und
Pastoren aus den synodalen Gemeinden,
sowie andere Komitees aus Mitgliedern
und Führungskräften aus Synodengemeinden. Zu allerletzt gibt es die
Nationalkirche. Die Nationalkirche hat auch
einen Bischof, der aus den Pastoren der
Kirche gewählt wird. Es gibt auch einen
landesweiten
Kirchenvorstand
mit
gewählten Mitgliedern der Lutherischen
Gemeinden, sowie andere Komitees und
Gruppen, die sich mit bestimmten Arbeiten
innerhalb
der
landesweiten
Kirche
beschäftigen.
Liebe Mitglieder und Freunde der Ersten
Lutherischen Kirche!
Dieses Mal möchte ich gerne über die
Arbeit in der Großkirche nachdenken.
„Großkirche“ bezieht sich auf Kirche in
einem anderen Rahmen. Der Begriff
„Großkirche“
beinhaltet
andere
Ausdrucksformen von Kirche außerhalb der
Gemeinde. Die meisten Kirchgänger
erleben
eigentlich
nur
den
Gemeindeaspekt des Begriffs Kirche. Das
heißt, dass die meisten Leute in den
Gottesdienst kommen, an Gemeindetreffen
teilnehmen und insgesamt auf GemeindeNiveau in der Kirche tätig sind. Ab und an,
wenn sie im Urlaub sind,
besuchen
Mitglieder andere Gemeinden, oder sie
nehmen
anderswo
an
besonderen
Gottesdiensten
wie
Taufen
oder
Hochzeiten teil.
Es gibt viele weitere Ausdrucksformen von
Kirche, die weiter reichen als die Arbeit
einer einzelnen Gemeinde. In der
Lutherischen Kirche in Kanada sind diese
anderen
Organisationen
die
„area
ministries“ (früher „conferences“ genannt),
die Synode und die landesweite Kirche.
Genauso wie eine Gemeinde Leiter hat
(Pastor, Kirchenvorstand, Komitees), so
haben auch die anderen Bereiche der
Kirche Führungskräfte. Das „area ministry“
hat einen Dekan („dean“), der Pastor einer
der Kirchen innerhalb der Region ist, ein
Führungsteam aus Gemeindemitgliedern
Die meisten Leute sind eigentlich lieber
anderswo als in einem Meeting. Aber jede
Ausdrucksform
von
Kirche
muss
Versammlungen haben und braucht dafür
auch Leute. Genauso wie eine Gemeinde
sich regelmäßig zusammensetzt, um ihre
Arbeit und ihre Finanzen zu überprüfen und
sich um das Gebäude zu kümmern, treffen
sich diese anderen Abteilungen der

Großkirche auch. Das Central Toronto
Area Ministry hatte ein solches Treffen im
April. Die meisten Mitglieder unseres
Kirchenvorstands und ich waren bei
diesem Treffen dabei. Die Eastern Synod
traf sich („Convention“ genannt) im Juni
letzten Jahres und die Erste Lutherische
Kirche beteiligte sich auch mit einem
Mitglied daran. Jetzt im Juli trifft sich die
nationale Kirche in Edmonton und auch
hier wird eines unserer Mitglieder mit dabei
sein. Kirchenstruktur und Kirchenversammlungen
gibt es, damit die Arbeit des
Evangeliums in einer etwas organisierten
und geplanten Art passieren kann.
dort zu sein, sondern weil ich weiß, dass
der Heilige Geist mich jedes Mal mit
Hoffnung und Energie erfüllt. Ich verlasse
diese Meetings mit der Gewissheit, dass
Gott sich immer noch um die Kirche
bemüht und dass es viele Möglichkeiten
gibt.
Ich weiß, dass nicht nur ich alleine dieses
Gefühl habe. Andere haben mir auch
gesagt, dass es ihnen ähnlich geht, wenn
sie sich an der Arbeit der Großkirche
beteiligen.
In unserem gemeinsamen Gottesdienst im
September wollen wir die Bestätigung
unserer Taufe feiern und auch das
Abendmahl. Dieser Gottesdienst wird uns
an den Bund erinnern, den Gott mit uns
geschlossen hat, und wird uns die
Möglichkeit geben, die Versprechen zu
bekräftigen, die bei unserer Taufe gemacht
wurden und die wir bei unserer
Konfirmation machten. Es ist meine
Hoffnung, dass dies uns helfen wird,
unseren Weg zu finden, und dass dies
auch ein Fundament sein wird für die
zukünftige Arbeit der Gemeinde, wohin uns
der Heilige Geist auch leiten mag.
Dies ist vergleichbar damit, dass auch
große
Firmen
ihre
regionale
Betriebsführung,
Unternehmensführung
und einen gewählten Vorstand haben. Der
Unterschied zwischen einer Firma und
einer Kirche ist, dass die Struktur, Leitung
und die Versammlungen einer Firma
darauf ausgerichtet sind, dass sie im
Geschäft bleibt und Profit macht.
In der Kirche geht es nicht darum, Profit zu
machen, sondern darum, das Evangelium
zu verbreiten, die Arbeit Jesu Christi in der
Welt zu tun und Leben zu verändern. Wir
sind alle dazu berufen worden, als wir
getauft wurden. Als wir getauft wurden,
haben wir unseren Taufglauben bestätigt
und haben uns verpflichtet Jesus Christus
zu folgen.
Ich wünsche Ihnen einen gesegneten
Sommer. Möge es eine Zeit zum Ausruhen
und Gewinnen neuer Energie sein.
Ich freue mich darauf, Sie im Sommer im
Gottesdienst zu sehen bei der Fortsetzung
unserer kirchlichen Arbeit.
Ich weiß, dass Gemeindearbeit manchmal
erschöpfend und entmutigend sein kann.
Manchmal fehlen uns Ideen und manchmal
können wir nicht genügend Leute finden
zum Helfen. Gott sei Dank für die Arbeit
der Großkirche. Wir sind nicht alleine. Es
gibt andere, die uns helfen, indem sie uns
Ideen geben oder uns bei der Arbeit helfen.
Manchmal habe ich auch überhaupt keine
Lust, zu irgendwelchen Meetings zu gehen,
für die ich einen Nachmittag oder sogar
einige Tage aufgeben muss. Aber ich gehe
trotzdem hin, nicht weil es mein Job ist,

Brief von LOFT.. Wir erhielten vom
Direktor von LOFT einen Dankesbrief. Am
21. Juni kam Chris Whitaker zu unserem
Gottesdienst und erzählte von der Arbeit
von LOFT.
Am 7. Juni wurde Axel Harrison Ulrich
hier im Gottesdienst getauft. Axel ist der
Sohn von Harald und Sonja und der Bruder
von Annika und Katja. Er ist außerdem der
Enkel von John und Christa Ulrich.
Senioren..Die Senioren feierten den
Beginn des Sommers mit einem sehr
schönen Essen. Annie und Linda, die
Töchter von Friedel Motsch, haben das
Essen organisiert und wir bedanken uns
ganz besonders bei ihnen. Es waren auch
noch viele andere, die mit dazu
beigetragen haben, dass wir ein schönes
Zusammensein hatten. Wir hatten eine
fröhliche Gruppe, die sich auf ihr nächstes
Treffen am 9. September freut.
Am 17. Mai verstarb plötzlich in Buffalo,
New York, Ingrid Kwiatkowski, die Mutter
unseres Pastors Richard Kwiatkowski.

Am 24. Juli verstarb Edith Hesas, unser
langjähriges Mitglied. Unser herzliches
Beileid geht an Bruno, Ron, Marlene,
Darlene und Enkelkinder. Bruno u. Edith
haben am 15. April vor 65 Jahren hier in
unserer Kirche geheiratet.

Picknick Lunch
Unser Picknick Lunch am 21. Juni nach
dem Gottesdienst war auch ein fröhliches
Zusammensein. Marilyn Kneller spendierte
Hähnchen und die Gemeinde brachte
Salate und Nachtisch. Vielen Dank an alle,
die mitgeholfen haben, mit besonderem
Dank an Rita Wagner.
