Unabhängig davon, ob Sie zum Austausch für ein oder zwei Semester, für ein Vollzeitstudium oder eine Promotion an die BTU kommen, liegt nun das Zulassungsverfahren
hinter Ihnen und neue spannende und interessante Erfahrungen vor Ihnen.
Wir möchten Ihnen zu Ihrer Zulassung gratulieren. Die Brandenburgische Technische Universität (BTU) ist eine junge, innovative und international ausgerichtete Universität. Etwa 20 % der Studierenden an der BTU sind internationale Studierende und
kommen aus 112 Ländern weltweit.
Um Ihnen den Einstieg in Cottbus oder Senftenberg zu erleichtern, haben wir in
dieser Broschüre viele Hinweise für den weiteren Ablauf des Immatrikulationsverfahrens (im Kapitel: »Erste Schritte«) sowie Informationen zur BTU und ihrer Umgebung
zusammengefasst.
Wir hoffen, dass sie Ihnen bei Ihren Reisevorbereitungen behilflich ist und freuen

Whether you are arriving at the BTU for an exchange, beginning your full-time studies
or aiming to complete your Ph.D. degree, the application process is now behind you
and new exciting and interesting experiences lie ahead of you.
We would like to congratulate you on your admission. The Brandenburg University of Technology is a young, innovative and internationally focused university. Around
20 % of our students are international students and come from 112 countries around
the world.
The following Brochure is meant to help make the adjustments to Cottbus or
Senftenberg as convenient as possible. We have included tips for the further procedure
of enrolling (in chapter »First Steps«) as well as summarized information on the BTU
and its surroundings.
We hope that the following information proves to be helpful in preparing you travels and look forward to welcoming you on campus when you arrive.

Das Studium an der BTU ist zumeist Studiengebührenfrei. Aus diesem Grunde gibt es nur eine
begrenzte Anzahl an Stipendienmöglichkeiten
für internationale Studierende. Das Akademische
Auslandsamt freut sich eine, wenn auch nur begrenzte Anzahl von Stipendien an internationale
Studierende, die an der BTU immatrikuliert sind

Deutschland verfügt über ein gut ausgebautes
Eisenbahnnetz. Cottbus hat schnelle und direkte

Germany has a very well connected train system. There are fast and direct lines that can
connect you to Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig and
Wroclaw (Poland). It is also fairly convenient to
get to Cottbus from any other point in Europe.

plan on arriving by plane, you would still need
to arrange a connecting train to Cottbus. Unfortunately, we cannot pick you up from the airport.
The airport with the most international connections in Germany would be Frankfurt / Main
(FRA). The next internationally connecting airports are Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL) and Berlin
Schönefeld Airport (SXF).

Wenn Sie in Berlin landen, gelangen Sie:
Vom Flughafen Tegel mit den Bussen 109, X9
zum Bahnhof »Zoologischer Garten« oder mit
dem Bus TXL zum »Hauptbahnhof«.
Vom Flughafen Schönefeld mit der S-Bahn
S9 zum Bahnhof »Berlin-Ostbahnhof«.
Ein Ticket für den Bus oder die S-Bahn ist
am Automaten und an jeder Station erhältlich
und muss sofort beim Einsteigen in den Bus
bzw. vor dem Einsteigen in die S-Bahn entwertet
werden.
Von all diesen Bahnhöfen fahren die Züge
der Linie RE 2 nach Cottbus. Abfahrten einmal
stündlich zwischen 6 und 22 Uhr. Die Fahrzeit
beträgt ca. 1 Stunde und zwanzig Minuten.
Die Züge der Linie RB 19 fahren stündlich
zwischen 4 und 20 Uhr vom Hauptbahnhof
nach Senftenberg. Die Fahrzeit beträgt ca. 2
Stunden und zehn Minuten.

travel time is about an hour and twenty minutes
depending on where you get on.
The RB 19 line travels to Senftenberg. A train
departs once an hour between 4am and 8pm.
Travel time is approx. 2 hours 10 mins.
If you are landing in Frankfurt / Main:
The S-Bahn takes you from the airport directly
to the central train station every ten minutes
between 6am and midnight. From there you
can catch a train every two hours between 5am
and 5pm to Leipzig with a connecting train to
Cottbus. The travel time is around six hours.

Suitable clothing: Cottbus is located in a
moderate climate of Europe. There are four
distinct seasons. Therefore please bring
warm clothes for winter, but also clothes
that can be layered for spring and fall and
summer clothes for when it gets hot. Please
also consider bringing traditional clothing
from your home country for cultural festivals held by the university.

Cottbus liegt im Nordosten Deutschlands, zwischen der Bundeshauptstadt Berlin (100 km)
und Dresden (120 km). Mit ca. 100000 Einwohnern ist Cottbus, nach der Landeshauptstadt
Potsdam, die zweitgrößte Stadt des Bundeslandes Brandenburg. Bis zur polnischen Grenze sind
es nur noch ca. 30 Kilometer.
Cottbus ist ein günstiger Ausgangspunkt für
Ausflüge in die landschaftlich schöne Region der
Niederlausitz. Diese wird durch den Spreewald
mit seinen kleinen Kanälen und Wasserläufen
einige Kilometer nördlich der Stadt und durch
ein kleines slawisches Volk, den Sorben bzw.
Wenden, mit einer eigenen, dem Polnischen ähnlichen »Sorbisch« genannten Sprache, geprägt.
So findet man heute viele Straßennamen und
Informationstafeln zweisprachig in Sorbisch und
Deutsch in Cottbus und Umgebung. Außerdem
bereichern die Sorben bzw. Wenden mit ihren
Festen und Bräuchen das Leben der Stadt.
Cottbus wurde 1156 erstmals urkundlich
erwähnt und erlangte im Mittelalter erste Bedeutung als Handelsknotenpunkt. Neben Teilen
der ehemaligen Stadtmauer aus dem 14. Jahrhundert zeugen prächtige Bürgerhäuser am Altmarkt
von frühem Glanz. Darüber hinaus wird das
Gesicht der Innenstadt vor allem durch die aus
der Gründerzeit stammenden Gebäude geprägt.
Nachdem die Stadt im 15. Jahrhundert durch die
Tuchmacher- und Leineweberzünfte schon an
Bedeutung gewonnen hatte, begann sie Ende

Region of Lower Lusatia. The landscape of Lower
Lusatia is characterized by the Spreewald with
its small canals and waterways as well as by the
Slavic tribe of people called Sorbs or Wends.
Their language, similar to Polish, is still used and
spoken in Lower Lusatia. For this reason, many
of the road signs and informational boards in
Cottbus and the surrounding region are bilingual, written in both Sorbish and German. The
Sorbish or Wendish people enrich the city of
Cottbus with numerous traditional festivals and
customs throughout the year.
Cottbus is first mentioned in historical records in the year 1156, when Cottbus first acquired importance as a trade centre. Parts of the
original city wall from the 14th century as well
as the stately townhouses around the old market square are evidence of the city’s early prestige. Apart from the 14th century architecture,
the city is characterized by buildings from the
years of rapid industrial growth in Germany,
which took place towards the end of the 19th
century. What originally began as a prominent

Heute ist Cottbus eine Großstadt, die sich
als Zentrum wissenschaftlicher, sportlicher und
kultureller Aktivitäten einen Namen gemacht
hat. Mehr Informationen über die Geschichte der
Stadt sowie der Umgebung bietet das über 100
Jahre alte Cottbuser Stadtmuseum in der Bahnhofstraße und das Wendische Museum in der
Mühlenstraße.
Zu den architektonischen Sehenswürdigkeiten gehören die Kirchen innerhalb der alten
Stadtgrenzen – die Oberkirche St. Nikolai, die

Senftenberg liegt etwa 40 km südwestlich von
Cottbus und 60 km nördlich von Dresden. Als
Kreisstadt des Landkreises Oberspreewald-Lausitz beherbergt die Stadt mit ca. 25000 Einwohnern den Campus Senftenberg der Universität.
Erstmalig urkundlich erwähnt wurde die
Stadt im 13. Jahrhundet. Die Festungsanlage mit
dem Schloss bildete den wichtigsten Ausgangspunkt für die Stadtentwicklung. Diese war zunächst von Landwirtschaft und Handwerk geprägt.
Jedoch erfolgte ab dem 19. Jahrhundert, nach
dem Fund von Braunkohle, eine schnelle Industrialisierung und wirtschaftliche Entwicklung.
Heute liegt Senftenberg im Zentrum des
Lausitzer Seenlandes. Hier entsteht zwischen
Berlin und Dresden eine einzigartige neue Wasserlandschaft. Seit einigen Jahren erhält die
ehemalige Tagebaulandschaft ein neues Gesicht
mit tiefblauen Farbtupfern. Eine völlig neue
Landschaft entwickelt sich – die größte zusammenhängende Seenlandschaft Europas mit insgesamt 23 größeren Seen. Das Wassersportzentrum »Senftenberger See« bietet mit seiner
Wasserfläche von 1300 Hektar ein hervorragendes Segel- und Surfrevier und ist somit bestens
für viele Wassersportarten geeignet. Senftenberg bildet das wirtschaftliche und touristische

Krankenversicherung nachweisen können.
Falls Sie schon eine für Deutschland gültige
Krankenversicherung in Ihrem Heimatland abgeschlossen haben, benötigen Sie eine Befreiung
von der Versicherungspflicht. Diese erhalten Sie
bei einer der gesetzlichen Krankenkassen. Für
diese Befreiung benötigen Sie den Zulassungsbescheid und Ihre Krankenversicherung mit
Gültigkeitsbescheinigung für Deutschland. Bitte
beachten Sie, dass Sie nur von der Krankenversicherung befreit werden können, wenn Sie eine

Die Befreiung ist für die Dauer des Studiums

akzeptiert.
02 HEALTH INSURANCE
According to German law § 5 paragraph 1 Nr. 9
Sentence 1 SGB V, all students are required to
obtain health insurance with the statutory
health insurance companies.
This means you can only enrol, provided you
have obtained valid German health insurance.
If you have already obtained health insurance
valid in Germany from your home country, you
will still require exemption of the requirement
of health insurance. You can receive this exemption from the statutory health insurance companies in Germany. In order to qualify for exemption you will need your letter of admission
and your health insurance validation for Germany. Please note, you can only be exempted
from the requirement of health insurance if you
can prove equivalence to the German health
insurance in all aspects of coverage.
The exemption lasts for the duration of your
degree studies and is a final decision that cannot be reversed: Even after you have completed
your studies, you will not be able to obtain German statutory health insurance unless you are
to be employed for an insurance required occupation. Before you make efforts to be exempted please consider this and consult one of the
statutory health insurance companies!

order to pay your monthly bills such as health
insurance and rent.
All of the larger banks have branches located in Cottbus and Senftenberg. Simply ask
for a »chequeing account for students«, as this
type is generally free of charge. You will require
your certificate of enrolment, your passport
and your »Meldebescheinigung« (registration
of residence), which you have obtained from
the Stadtbüro.
You can also open an account if you have
not yet been to the Foreigners’ Registration Office. What counts is that you have taken care
of registering with the Stadtbüro.
If you have already set up a blocked bank
account from your home country, you will have
to unlock this account in Germany.
Please consider, due to large numbers of
international students arriving towards the
start of the semester, processing of accounts
can take up to two weeks. We therefore recommend you bring sufficient cash funds with you
