Within the VDMA, Rainer Gebhardt is the contact person for industry experts as far as all aspects of the generative / additive manufacturing process that has become known as 3D printing are concerned. At present, Mr Gebhardt is establishing a neutral exchange platform for 3D printing in the industrial sector and develops services which will be provided by the Association for machinery manufacturers interested in this production method. How would you explain 3D printing or generative / additive manufacturing in one sentence? What is the new element brought about by 3D printing? 3D printing is the broader term for tool-less manufacturing methods which enable to manufacture components from digital data layer upon layer. This tool-less production method changes the approach to manufacturing profoundly and thus allows completely new design freedoms. Viele sprechen von den Potenzialen des 3D-Drucks. Wie kommt es hierzu? Many talk about the potentials of 3D printing. But why? There are many reasons for the success of this technology and the great interest it has aroused: New freedoms in design and construction, fast and tool-less prototype manufacturing, potentials for a reduction of costs in stock-keeping and logistics are just a prelude. 3D printing also gives many causes for controversial discussions with regard to subjects like copyright, protection of intellectual property, etc. „There is a wide array of technologies; the number of fields of application and the potential are huge!“ Is there a connection between 3D printing and the established printing methods in the graphic arts industry? 3D printing is printing in the third dimension. This young line of business has many points linking it with traditional machinery manufacturing for the graphic arts industry: Productivity, data handling, reproducibility, precision, norms and standards for quality and security, to give just a few examples. Auch Spezialanwendungen wie of experience, the know-how and the network established within the Printing and Paper Technology Association provide an excellent basis for this key topic of the future. To what extent do the developments in 3D printing influence traditional industrial manufacturing processes? Large machinery manufacturers, e.g., have departments focusing on 3D printing methods. The latter enable completely new approaches to solutions in development and construction. Industry and commerce see chances for new business fields in 3D printing on an international scale. The innovative manufacturing methods of 3D printing redefine the manufacturing world: from prototype manufacturing to spare parts planning and one-off production. Pretty obvious examples for individualised parts are to be found in medical engineering. No two people have an identical tooth crown … Will 3D printing replace the traditional manufacturing methods? Despite all the euphoria one should not allow oneself to be misled and bear in mind that the geometry of a component is often only a fraction of the total engineering achievement. Properties of components like wear resistance, breaking strength and forming properties are characteristics which cannot simply be created with a data file and a handful of powder. 3D printing will certainly not be able to replace well-engineered functional parts and high-quality mass-produced parts of the established engineering industry in the foreseeable future. Is 3D printing still a dream of the future? Are there industrial segments where 3D printing is already used? In many cases, 3D printing is already an excellent method to accelerate development processes and to satisfy special wishes. Special applications, too, like light-weight construction and space-saving, compact designs are promising fields of activity for the additive manufacturing methods. Design engineers who combine the traditional engineering know-how with the design options of 3D printing are ahead of the game when it comes to optimising the performance of assembly modules. What are the crucial factors that will help 3D printing to become widely used in industrial production as well? The performance of the systems must be improved and the investment cost incurred for the systems must not be out of proportion. The cost of material will level off at a healthy level. Since this technology is still in its very early stages, great potentials are to be expected. Digital printing changes processes, from converting to publishing. Transferring the benefits such as customization, short lead times and small batch sizes into industrial book production requires integrated and flexible converting solutions. Single sheets offer the direct route to a digitally printed book. Up to 12,600 books per hour in all popular book formats set the standards for production, thus allowing productivity on par with conventional offset printing. The direct route to digitally printed books The printing industry is in a period of transformation. Digital production processes and digital media are in competition with traditional print products and are posing a new challenge to printing service providers, publishers and technology suppliers. Printed information is being partially replaced by digital media, while print products are completely repositioning themselves. Successful long-term positioning of the printing industry facing new market requirements, technologies and market participants requires that, in addition to technology, the process of change also takes into account upstream and downstream processes as well as the entire business process. The absence of the printing plate in digital printing means that the business process no longer has to align with the production process. This allows the printing industry both a substantive realignment of printed products as well as flexibility in the output format. Digital printing in the industrial production of books In industrial book production the benefits of digital book printing such as customization, short lead times and small batch sizes have a direct effect on the entire business process, from processing to the publisher. Success and responses to market demands such as web-to-print, format diversity and final product variety promise integrated, highly automated and flexible production solutions on industrial level. Will E.C.H. Autor: Olaf Dreger, Director Product Management, E.C.H. Will GmbH The first of these post press converting solutions on the market cover the common book formats and can produce up to 80 books per minute. Based on the print widths of currently popular digital presses, working widths of up to 43‘‘ are available. In addition to converting with classical signatures, the first solutions with single sheets are available, which work with turning bars. Customized productivity requires a modular concept: DCbook by E.C.H. Will E.C.H. Will thinks a step further: with its DCbook machine platform, the company is offering an innovative converting solution for the industrial production of digitally printed books. DCbook is pursuing the direct and shortest route to the book: the digitally printed book pages are directly cut and collected into single pages – the book block of single pages is finished and ready for binding. No folding, no turning bars. Picking up on the trend towards larger print widths, the system is designed for a maximum working width of 63‘‘ and the converting of 4 to 14 ribbons, i.e. up to 14 books in parallel. An odd number of ribbons is also possible – for optimal utilization of the working width. More than 200 books per minute or up to 12,600 books per hour in all popular book formats set the standards for production, thus allowing productivity on par with conventional offset printing. Minimum limitations for upstream and downstream processes, open interfaces for digital printing and binding as well as workflow software solutions provide an integrated in-line solution for book production. A high degree of format and paper flexibility and fully automatic setup processes ensure efficient production even for short runs. Two-step page increments minimize paper waste. And the modular machine concept of DCbook just easily adapts to the increasing performance and equipment requirements from advancements in digital printing technology.
