DEUTSCH - KANADISCHE GESELLSCHAFT E.V. GESELLSCHAFT FÜR INTERNATIONALE ZUSAMMENARBEIT The DKG Internship Program at a Glance. Information Sheet for Employers The DKG (Deutsch-Kanadische Gesellschaft or German-Canadian Association) has launched an initiative in collaboration with the Canadian Embassy in Berlin, to bring top German students to Canada for an internship related to their field of study. To support this initiative, we are seeking dedicated companies, firms and organisations in Canada that are interested in cooperating with us and participating in this Internship Program. Participants of the Internship Program will have the opportunity to obtain work experiences in Canada before returning to Germany to continue their studies or to begin their professional careers. As an employer, you will benefit from an experience, education and critical thinking not based on the North American Model, thus providing you with an insight into European market philosophy, customs and market possibilities. The DKG is a non-profit organization founded in 1951 to promote a closer and deeper partnership between Germany and Canada in all its facets: economic, cultural and human. One of the key objectives of our work is the development of young people. Annually, since 1965, the DKG has operated a Work and Travel Program exclusively to Canada in which more than 2,500 students have participated. Our students often cite their Canadian experience as an important milestone in their résumé. Many of them have moved on to successful careers. We are proud to count numerous former participants as supporters of the German-Canadian partnership and lifelong friends of Canada. The DKG Internship Program will provide companies, firms and organizations in Canada with the opportunity to engage students early in their promising careers. All DKG interns will meet the following qualifications: - Excellence in their field of study, - High motivation and reliability, - Good command of the English and/or French language. The DKG (in collaboration with German universities) will act as a talent scout and make an initial selection among potential candidates according to the qualifications specified by potential employers. The DKG is able to provide the following assistance: - Presenting your company’s profile on our site www.dkg-onlinge.de , Marketing your profile at selected university faculties, Consulting with academic contacts in the process of talent scouting, Assessing incoming applications first-hand, Conducting individual rounds of applicant interviews. The employer and the candidate intern will agree on the start date and duration of the internship, usually from 4 to 6 months. If acceptable to the employer, it would be beneficial to the candidate intern if the timing coincides with the German academic calendar. To maximise the experience for both the employer and the intern, it will be helpful if the following package can be provided: - A qualified work package related to the intern’s field of study, - Mentoring from an experienced manager including regular performance feedback, - A compensation package in accordance with usual Canadian business practices, - Assistance to find suitable accommodation. The DKG will assist the interns in obtaining the appropriate work permit from the Canadian government as well as a Canadian social security number. The interns will pay for their own travel expenses, visa fees as well as for the cost of medical insurance and accommodation. We would be pleased to count you as a partner for this ambitious initiative. GESELLSCHAFT FÜR INTERNATIONALE ZUSAMMENARBEIT Info Sheet on the German-Canadian Association History and Objectives The German-Canadian Association (DKG), a non-profit organization, was founded in 1951 and aims to advance the economic, cultural and social links between Germany and Canada. Youth Initiatives One focus of our work is the promotion of youth activities. In cooperation with the Canadian Embassy in Berlin and many long-standing partners in Canada, we have been organizing a highly successful Work & Travel Program for German students since 1965. We have thus become one of the most experienced agents in this field and solely specialize in Canada. 2,500 students have so far completed the Work & Travel Program. Numerous participants have gone on to become high achievers in their professional field and regard their stay in Canada as a milestone in their biography. Many are still involved in the German-Canadian network. The DKG also offers an Internship Program that will provide a limited number of highly educated students who have the potential to become leaders in their field with the opportunity to gain study-related professional experience in Canada. In this respect, the DKG is collaborating with renowned companies and institutions in Canada that are interested in getting to know high performing students at an early stage. Of course we also make every effort to assist Canadian students in seeking work and accommodation in Germany and in becoming acquainted with aspects of daily life in this country. Advancing Economic Relations Secondly, the DKG offers companies and institutions diverse opportunities to network within the German-Canadian corporate world. Worthy of mention here is the interdisciplinary conference Forum@KanadaHausBerlin, which takes place every spring and examines current Germany and Canada-related topics from various perspectives. Launched as the German-Canadian Professionals’ Conference in 2010, a new format was developed with our Canadian Vorstand: Michael Siebold, Frankfurt; Stefan Rizor, Köln; Bernd Brummermann, Köln; Dr. Benjamin Jung, Wachtberg; Gerhard Heß, Bad Hersfeld; Dr. Ulrike Rausch, Düsseldorf. Präsidium: Präsident: Norbert Strohschen, Rösrath; Vizepräsidenten: Michael Nussbaum, Ahrensburg; Prof. Dr. Klaus Stierstorfer, Münster; Heidrun Richter, Berlin. Anschrift: Deutsch-Kanadische Gesellschaft e.V., c/o Osborne Clarke, Innere Kanalstraße 15, 50823 Köln; Telefon: 0221-2 57 67 81; Fax: 0221-2 57 72 36; eMail: [email protected]; Internet: www.dkg-online.de Bankverbindung: Konto Nr. 171972953, Sparkasse KölnBonn, BLZ 370 501 98 Vereinsregister: Amtsgericht Köln 43 VR 9965 partners, which has become an integral part of the Embassy calendar. The Canadian Embassy in Berlin serves as a prominent location for high-quality networking. In addition, we regularly invite companies involved in Canada to report on their corporate activities and on the economic framework conditions pertaining to their business Canada. Vice versa we enable Canadian companies active in Germany to present themselves and to talk about their experiences with the German market in comparison to Canada. Companies can present themselves in the DKG Journal, at events organized in cooperation with the German-Canadian Business Clubs as well as on our website, www.dkg-online.de. Enterprises can thus introduce their products and company philosophy related to Canada on a platform that allows them to reach out to potential partners, customers and in particular young people, who are generally not accessible via classic communication channels. Our individual members receive authentic, up-todate, first-hand information in this way. Cultural Encounters with Canada Thirdly, our association is an active participant in Canadian cultural life in Germany. In close collaboration with the Embassy of Canada in Berlin, the DKG initiates and promotes concerts, theatre performances, exhibitions, lecture series and discussion events centred on Canada. Advancing Human Relations It all started with friendships between members of the Canadian armed forces stationed in Germany and the German population. This tradition of fostering social relations remains an important aspect of the DKG. Regular get-togethers, barbecues, pre-Christmas parties, beer garden meetings and the joint participation in sporting events continue to feature in the standard program of our association. The DKG Journal (as from 2014 integrated in the magazine 360 Grad Kanada), published quarterly, provides all members with background information on history, politics and culture as well as special travel reports and the latest news on the Association’s activities. Supra-regional Events for Friends of Canada Once a year, the German-Canadian Association organizes a festive annual event at a different location. This event brings together all members and friends of the DKG and Canada from all over Germany. Apart from the social program, it provides sufficient opportunity to make new contacts or strengthen existing ones in an informal atmosphere. 2 Benefits at a Glance The DKG offers its individual members: - An established network for fostering social ties with Canadians and friends of Canada; - An information hub for cultural, economic and political matters; - Diverse opportunities for promoting German-Canadian youth exchanges. The DKG offers its corporate members - A platform for networking with other organizations and institutions in business, politics and culture; - A basis for a acquiring potential partners, customers and in particular young people who are difficult to reach via classic channels; - A „talent scout“ function to identify highly talented young people; - A platform for cultural sponsorship and promoting understanding with Canada as a business partner.
