Preface The conference „Vibrations in Rotating Machines“, SIRM 2009, is number eight in the sequence and will be held for the third time at TU-Vienna. The SIRM conference series was started in 1991 and has become a lively discussion forum among participants from academia and industry. Originally, the SIRM conference series was established to provide a forum within the German-speaking community in rotor dynamics. To respect the expansion of the European Community and the coalescence of countries in Europe, for the first time English will be also an official conference language. The organizers hope that this move will strengthen the communication and cooperation within the central-european countries. The Institute of Mechanics and Mechatronics at TU-Vienna welcomes altogether 80 participants from Brazil, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Poland, Sweden and Austria to this event and wishes them a pleasant stay in Vienna. Vibration problems in rotating machinery are always subject of interesting investigations and discussions from both, a scientific and a practical point of view. After a peer-review of the submitted paper proposals, 34 contributions were accepted for presentation at the conference. They were prepared by 78 authors from the above mentioned countries. The topics addressed in these papers cover fluid film bearings, torsional systems, balancing, blade vibrations, modelling, stability analysis, active damping, machine monitoring and identification, roller bearings and special problems in rotordynamics. This book of abstracts contains 34 short versions of the papers and an authors index. Full length papers, each about 10 pages, are contained in the conference proceedings CD-ROM. The paper reference numbers in the conference program refer to the paper index (ID) printed on the first page of each abstract in this booklet. The conference organizers of SIRM 2009 would like to thank the secretaries of the Institute of Mechanics and Mechatronics, in the first place Mrs. R. Mühlberger, Mrs. R. Polterauer, and Mrs. I. Rottensteiner for the extensive work devoted to the preparation of this conference, the smooth schedule, and the relaxed atmosphere. We are also very grateful to Mr. G. Canek for designing and preparing the conference homepage and the proceedings CD-ROM. Special thanks go to Mr. M. Neumann for preparing the audio systems in the conference rooms. Februar 2009 veranstaltet vom Institut für Mechanik und Mechatronik Technische Universität Wien W I E N Paper-ID 02 umerical and experimental dynamic analysis of a rotor with non-circular shaft mounted in anisotropic bearings F.E. Boru, H. Irretier In the analysis of rotor-bearing systems, it is common to study circular shaft rotors with circularly symmetric disk mounted on symmetric or asymmetric bearings. Such systems have constant stiffness and mass properties of the rotating element in all directions. But in practical rotors there usually is an asymmetry present that may be intentionally induced for functionality reasons like keyways, turbines with two blades, motor and generator rotors, etc., or it may be present unintentionally arising due to cracks in shafts, breaking off of a blade in a turbine or a pump, etc. This forces the interest for the dynamic analysis and stability investigation of rotor systems with circular non-symmetry. Such rotors are analytically and numerically investigated to predict their dynamic behaviours during the design phase. But before a certain numerical approach can be taken as accurate enough to be used for design, it is advisable to compare the numerical results with experimental results. This, however, can be best applied on a sufficiently simple model, whose dynamic responses can, if possible, analytically identified, but complicated enough to demonstrate as many features of an industrial rotor as possible. Considering a general rotor with non-circular shaft mounted in anisotropic bearings, the equation of motion (1) is a second order differential equations with time dependent coefficient regardless of the coordinate system selected. r r r r (1) M ( t ) q&& + C ( t ) q& + K ( t ) q = 0 Such equations are solved using the HILL’s method, which gives infinite number of eigenvalue equations. Solving finite number of the equations give good approximation of the stability of the rotor-bearingsystem as shown in figure 1 as example for LAVAL-rotor. 3 0.05 Amplitude [mm] AB Damping ratio 2.5 2 Unbalanced resp. The analysis in the fixed coordinate system helps to justify the HILL’s method of solution and the effect of truncating the infinite size of the system matrices on the result accuracy. Further the effect of shear deformation is investigated by comparing a RAYLEIGH and a TIMOSHENKO beam in modelling the shaft. 0.08 Damping ratio 0.06 0.04 0.02 0 -0.02 -0.04 -0.06 -0.08 0 a) Analysed assembly 0.5 1 1.5 2 2.5 3 4 Speed of Rotation [rpm] x 10 b) Damping ratio (FE results) Figure 2 General rotor with three disks in rigid bearings The numerical results show that the error incurred due to truncating the dimensions of the system matrices was not significant. Using a FOURIER series limit from -1 to 1 gives a maximum of 0.37% error for the first 10 eigenvalues. On the other hand, the percentage difference between the two beam theories is significantly high for some eigenvalues. Paper-ID 03 A Small, Easy-to-Use Program for Rotor Dynamics C. Weißbacher, H. Hübner, R. Sievering, H. Stelzer Calculation of vibrations of rotating machine parts generally is an important aspect in machine design and analysis. Especially for permanentmagnetic bearings, problems related to rotor dynamics are a major issue. These bearings combine relatively low stiffness with little damping and relatively high speeds. The department of magnetic bearings and drives of the Central Technology Division (Zentralabteilung Technologie, ZAT) at Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH has been developing permanent-magnetic bearing systems for more than two decades. In order to be able to reliably design these systems, a rotor dynamics simulation software tool was developed and continuously improved for many years. This formerly developed software tool calculates eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes of circular rotors in isotropic bearings without damping by application of the transfer matrix method. An ANSYS calculation routine has recently been added, which allows for more elaborate system models, but takes relatively long calculation times. In order to improve the ratio of model accuracy versus calculation time, a new rotor dynamics calculation software named RoSi based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) is developed at the ZAT. It is mainly aimed at students and developers who do not have access to professional rotor dynamics software. RoSi not only provides eigenfrequency analysis, but also calculation of perturbation responses. Bearing damping can be modelled as well as noncircular rotors in orthotropic bearings or the influence of gravity. In this work, eigenfrequency analysis and calculation of perturbation response for a specific rotor-bearing-system done with RoSi are presented. The results are discussed and compared to analytical results and results of other FEM programs. RoSi is implemented in Maple 11.0 and is currently being transferred to a modern, object-oriented Java/C++ environment with a graphical user interface. This will not only simplify usage of this rotor dynamics software, but also increase user acceptance. The final development result therefore is a small and easily used calculation software for a relatively wide variety of rotor-bearing-systems. Paper-ID 04 Vibration based monitoring applied to the identification of defects in rotordynamic systems M. M. Arco-Verde, M. A. Savi, H. I. Weber Maintenance is a research topic aiming efficiency increase and cost reduction in different kinds of industries. The monitoring of industrial processes and equipments is an essential part of maintenance, being directly related to competitive manufacturing. There are different variables that can be monitored being related to thermal characteristics or dimensional properties. However, vibration based technology has been largely employed in different situations. In general, vibration based monitoring is a nondestructive sensing for the purpose of detecting changes, which may indicate faults related to damage or degradation. The detection methodology is based on pattern recognition applied either to time domain or to frequency domain. The vibration signature of equipment can provide a variety of information on many components and structures such as gear meshing frequencies, bearings, structural resonances, and even electrical faults. Vibration based technology has been largely employed in the monitoring of rotating machinery. In this particular field, faults can be categorized as mechanical or electrical types. The present work analyzes signals obtained from a rotordynamic test rig simulating different defects (Figure 1). Vibration based monitoring is applied to these situations, establishing proper signatures in frequency and time domain. Basically, four different operational conditions are considered: normal operation, unbalanced operation, outer race failure operation and inner race failure operation. Normal condition is assumed to be the reference signature of the system and all other signals are considered in terms of variations with respect to this signature. Nonlinear tools are employed in order to characterize signature characteristics and Lyapunov exponents help the identification of signal complexity. All situations may be detected by the proposed approach, however, it is difficult to identify what is the specific defect. In this regard, nonlinear tools may be explored in order to facilitate the defect identification. State space reconstruction is conducted and delay parameters are analyzed presenting more or less the same values for all treated conditions. Nevertheless, the use of the state space reconstruction brings new information to signal analysis. Lyapunov exponents indicate that all exponent values are very small, and therefore, could be considered as null values. Nevertheless, they present great variations when compared with the normal operation condition. In the authors knowledge, these results may encourage the use of nonlinear tools for vibration based monitoring. Figure 1 – Rotordynamic test rig. Paper-ID 06 New approach to the analysis of the dynamic behavior of a rotor system vibrating in a liquid E. Malenovsky F. Pochyly The interaction between shaft and surroundings has influence on dynamic behavior of hydraulic rotor systems. Especially in water turbines and pump the fluid-structure interaction has substantially influence on frequency modal behavior. Computational analysis using commercial solvers e.g. ANSYS or FLUENT, is very time consuming. It is necessary to have the two types of meshes when the first is applied on the structure and the second is used for liquid. Including the interaction caused, that the task is nonlinear. Solution of coupled problem is provided in frequency or time domains. In contribution is presented new approach to the solution, which allowed the separation the structure and liquid from each other. Approach is based on the expansion of solution into series of eigen shapes of vibration. In the first step of solution the couple problem is provided analysis of individual structure. Frequency modal behavior is a result of this solution. In general case, when large displacement and strain are included, the choosing shaft position is as input parameter. In the second step of solution is provided analysis of individual liquid system. Boundary conditions in places, when the interaction is occurred, are dependant on the chosen shape of vibration. The input parameter is the chosen boundary, which again depends on the chosen shape of vibration. The results from this step are the velocities and pressures fields. The last computational step is analysis of structure including the liquid influence. If the program system ANSYS is used the finite element method is applied. In the form of added modal mass, damping and stiffness matrices, the liquid system is included to the structure. These modal matrices for finite elements are calculated on base of liquid analysis consequently on base the known velocities and pressures fields. It is necessary to do some computational and experimental testing, because this approach to solution is new. The cantilever beam submerged into water was chosen as test equipment. Some comparison computational and experimental analysis is presented in the contribution. The program system MATLAB was chosen for the software performing. Curvy–linear co–ordinates are used for the software. For the solution of the Navier– Stokes eq. the Finite Volume Method is used and for the continuity eq. the Finite Difference Method. This combination was chosen to achieve the best numerical stability of the numerical solution. It is necessary to note, that all possible combinations between both were tested. Also, it is necessary to note, that both methods are used as collocations. The Bezier body is used for the approximation of the geometrical configuration and also for the approximation of velocity and pressure solution. The boundary conditions for the liquid were chosen to be corresponding with the experiment. On the upper part is assumed free water level, on the outer part is zero velocity and on the beam is the velocity of vibrating beam and liquid the same. Paper-ID 8 Development of excitation and measurement for identification of rotating blade disks Luděk Pešek František Vaněk Pavel Procházka Petr Vaněk Jan Cibulka Design and operation of large size bladed machines bring about many serious problems. Dynamic load resistance and operational reliability of blades are forefront among them. Standard computing procedures cannot be used for designing new blades due to the lack of verified information on both the time varying excitation forces and the value of structural damping. For an improvement of preciseness and extension of possibilities up to now measurements, novel experimental appliances have been developed in the Institute of Thermomechanics (IT). At first the radio telemetric system, and then the vibrodiagnostic system VDS-UT intended for a research of operational stress of rotating blades of the turbine 210MW at the power plant Prunéřov II have been assembled. The results of the operational measurements proved that an inhomogeneous speed field acts as a periodic aerodynamic exiting force of rotor blade vibration. Changes in the speed field can be induced by many influences, e.g. backpressure or instantaneous power of the unit. Therefore modelling and experimental techniques of dynamic relations of bladed wheels are considered to have such a great meaning. In a research laboratory, force effects of magnetic field can simulate a real excitation of blades. Therefore the main attention will be herein devoted to the design of electromagnetic and permanent magnetic excitation of the model wheel and Cambell testing station. High performance electromagnetic harmonic excitation serves as a defined revolution independent force input for the analysis of resonant vibration. On the contrary, permanent magnets produce revolution dependent excitation simulating operational excitation for example by stator blades. Excitation of vibration of a rotating bladed test wheel has been solved theoretically. Consequently, an excitation appliance has been developed and verified during comparative tests and measurements. Excitation of vibration is achieved by force effect of a magnetic field. It was shown that there is a substantial difference between the configuration with permanent magnets and an electromagnet. Permanent magnets excite stationary, closed on perimeter, non-rotating modes of vibration which differ in integral number of circumferential waves. On the other hand, switch controlled electromagnets feature various modes of vibration, from closed on perimeter and non-rotating, through rotating correspondingly to the wheel revolution and closed in one or more revolutions, up to open modes of vibration with non-integral number of circumferential waves. Effects of eddy currents attenuate the alternating magnetic field. Penetration depth of magnetic field and magnetic induction saturation are dependent on ferromagnetic material behavior. The highest value of magnetic induction limits the maximum value of exiting force, e.g. 25N for steel and on 5N for a chrome alloy. The increasing width of magnet pole the higher attractive force of the magnet but broader force impulses and worse excitation of higher frequencies. Resonant vibration adjustment by frequency revolution tuning is discussed as well. In this case, vibration can be excited under the condition that the blades pass by a magnet in the moment of their negative displacement maximum even by a relatively small energy of the magnetic field. The magneto-kinematic contactless system VDS-UT is used for evaluation of vibration under rotation. Displacement sensors are placed on the stator over the tips of blades or shrouds. The enhancement of the systems herein was aimed at the sensor part to enable a continuous orbit movement observation of the vibrating disk under revolution. The description of revolving rotor dynamics is a complex problem and it has been investigated for a long period of time. The description of rotor dynamics from the stator standpoint becomes even more complex identification task. Due to the rotation, besides forced resonant vibration, also unbalance, misalignment and shimmy movements arise. That causes interference especially in cases when the revolution frequencies are close to the resonant frequencies or their harmonics. Furthermore, each unbalance and asymmetry of the disk causes splitting of multiple eigenfrequencies coming out of rotational symmetry. In our case forced resonant frequencies and disk modes under rotation have been identified. Measured orbits in both rotor and stator space were applied to analysing forward and backward travelling waves. Eigenformen in Modenfamilien eingeteilt. Paper-ID 12 Some cases of rotor instability and methods of their solution J. Šimek, R. Svoboda, J. Tůma High-speed rotors supported in fluid film bearings may suffer from instabilities, characterized by big amplitude subharmonic vibrations. Two basic types of instability are recognized – namely „oil whirl“ and „oil whip“. Instability of the „oil whirl“ type, with frequency dependent on rotational speed, occurs more likely with rigid rotors. „Oil whip“ type, encountered mainly with elastic rotors, is characterized by constant vibration frequency, usually the lowest eigenfrequency of the system. Quite frequent are cases, when instability of the „oil whirl“ type converts in region of the 1st eigenfrequency of the system to the „oil whip“ type. The source of instability can be the bearing support itself or some external source of destabilizing forces, e.g. labyrinth seals. The paper presents some cases of instability, encountered during the author’s practice, including solution of the problem. The 1st case presented is that of expansion turbine with impellers attached directly to pinions of high-speed gearbox. Pinion of the 1st stage exhibited in some operational regimes instability with subharmonic frequency close to the calculated 1st system eigenfrequency. Pinion of the 2nd stage with lower operating speed was without problems, although its stability reserve was still lower than that of the 1st stage. It appeared, that the 1st stage pinion had the 1st and 2nd eigenfrequency close one to another and both with low stability reserve. As the pinions were already supported in tilting-pad journal bearings, the instability had to be suppressed by reduction of destabilizing effect of labyrinth seal at the backside of the impeller by means of restricting circumferential flow. Another case of instability was encountered in gas turbine constituting one rotor with axial compressor. Rotor supported in lemon bearings exhibited instability of “oil whip” type, starting approximately at double the 1st rotor eigenfrequency. The measured subharmonic vibration component was close to the 1st rotor eigenfrequency. As the bearings were located close to vibration nodes, the instability could not be suppressed by change of bearings. The most persistent case of instability was encountered on high pressure steam turbine with relatively high operating speed of 5.500 rpm. With the output exceeding about 50% of rated power, severe vibrations of rotor appeared with subharmonic frequency close to the calculated and measured 2nd rotor eigenfrequency. The rotor supported in lemon bearings had nodes of vibration very close to the bearings, so that bearing damping was not much effective, disregarding bearing type. Only when bearing stiffness was substantially reduced by modification of partial admission from symmetric to unsymmetrical one, it was possible to find special geometry tilting-pad bearings, which suppressed subharmonic vibration to acceptable level and enabled to operate turbine to its full power. Turbocharger rotors are supported mostly in floating ring bearings. Due to small load, floating rings with rotating bushings suffer sometimes from instability of outer oil film. Subharmonic vibration of the bushing has in most cases limited amplitude, but in some instances amplitudes reach practically the whole of bearing clearance. Such case is documented and its solution through use of non-rotating bushing with three-lobbed inner geometry is presented. Rotor instability is a very dangerous phenomenon and operation in region of instability is not permissible. Suppressing the instability at already finished machines is always very troublesome and therefore it is vital to achieve high level of design data accuracy. Standard means of rotor stabilization need not be always effective and the situation must be considered from all aspects, not only according to simplified theses. A new research project dealing with possibilities of rotor stabilization through external excitation of bearings was started. Test stand was designed and manufactured and initial analysis was carried out, indicating some possibilities of affecting rotor dynamics. Paper-ID 16 Vibration Analysis using Time Domain Methods for the Detection of small Roller Bearing Defects T. Doguer, J. Strackeljan The analysis of vibration signals is a major technique for monitoring the condition of machine components. A focus of this paper is given to the early detection of very small bearing damages like false brinelling faults, which occur in the presence of a small relative motion between the rollers and raceways during non-rotation times. This leads to a small damage which is characterized by elliptical wear marks in the axial direction at each roller position. The paper shows that the vibration structure generated by a small surface defect differs from a normal state even if the signal energy is eliminated by normalisation of the data. Suitable time domain features are a mathematical description of the shape of selected time domain peaks, which could easily be calculated by the higher derivatives of the time acceleration signal and some parameters characterizing the randomness of the peak positions. After the step of extracting 32 features from the time signal a feature selection process is executed automatically. This enables the selection of a feature subset which is best suited to the present fault situation. Test rig results indicate the high potential of the new time domain features for both fault types. The last chapter gives a short introduction in an algorithm for bearing fault simulation. Main steps in condition monitoring are applying measurement techniques, signal processing and signal categorisation combined with classification algorithms. The healthy signature can be measured on operating machines but data with seeded faults are more difficult to obtain. This paper presents an approach for detection of roller bearing defects using time domain methods, without the necessity of special information about bearing type and other operating parameters. The vibration signals of a roller bearing deliver a large content of information about its structural dynamics and operating conditions. The presence or absence of bearing faults can be determined form the raw acceleration signal only in few cases. In general the signal contains a multitude of different vibration components. The idea suggested in this paper is to use only parts of the time signal which stand in close relation to possible bearing faults. For that purpose a peak in the time signal is defined as a local extremum in the measured acceleration signal x ( 2) , where x is the displacement. This data are used as an input for the calculation of features. Possible features for corresponding bearing faults may be calculated from the ratio of local maxima of measured x ( 2) and x ( 4) . Also the distance variation between local maxima on adjacent or non-adjacent locations over a predefined offset value can be considered. Further features can be obtained by the number of local maxima with absolute values, which are over some predefined threshold values. The histogram of peak amplitude and peak distance distribution are additional features which could be considered. Taking the norm of signal values - for instance with root mean square - may be useful to eliminate the influence of signal energy of the measured impact sound. A selection of features from a total of 32 is listed in the paper. The results obtained from two different test rigs demonstrate that the proposed feature generation is a promising method for the detection of faults in roller bearings. The first test rig represents the rolling contact between files with different grades of cut and a roller ball. These test conditions are a simple model of an extended fault in roller bearings, which exceed the spacing between the balls and lead to a permanent contact between damaged surface and the ball. The second one considers a single small size pitting fault on a bearing race. In both cases the separation of different surfaces and also faulty and non-faulty bearing conditions is possible. The method enables a new introduction of higher derivatives because the algorithm is oriented on single peaks and a complete time signal. In the next steps the algorithm will be tested in combination with real world application. First investigations concerning vehicle wheel bearings have been done and show that the method in general is a suitable tool in condition monitoring. The results from the simulation program indicate clearly, that the simulation of bearing faults in combination with multi-body-system could help to improve the understanding of fault induced vibrations. Further work in progress is directed towards gaining the necessary improvement of the simulation programme and the implementation in standard MBSSoftware like ADAMS or SIMPACK. Paper-ID 19 Nonlinear Multiharmonic Vibrations of Coupled Turbine Bladings C. Siewert, L. Panning, J. Wallaschek The blades of rotating turbine disks are subjected to high static and dynamic loads during operation. The static loads are mainly due to the centrifugal force and thermal strains, whereas the dynamic loads are caused by fluctuating gas forces resulting in forced vibrations of the blades. The forced vibrations can lead to high cycle fatigue failures causing substantial damage and high maintenance effort. Thus, one of the main tasks in the mechanical design of turbine blading is the reduction of the vibration amplitudes to avoid excessive high dynamic stresses. The vibration amplitudes of the blades can be reduced significantly to a reasonable amount by means of friction damping devices such as underplatform dampers, tip shrouds and lacing wires. In the case of blade vibrations, relative displacements between adjacent blades or between the friction damping devices and the neighboring blades occur in the contacts. Friction forces are generated providing additional damping to the structure due to the energy dissipation. Therefore, the coupling of the blades increases the overall damping of the turbine blading. To compute the nonlinear forced vibrations of the coupled blading, the nonlinear equations of motion are solved in the frequency domain owing to the high computational efficiency of this approach. The transformation of the nonlinear equations of motion into the frequency domain can be carried out by representing the steadystate displacement in terms of its harmonic components. After that transformation, the nonlinear forced response is computed as a function of the excitation frequency in the frequency domain. The classical Harmonic Balance Method uses only the fundamental harmonic component for the transformation into the frequency domain. Examples for the forced response calculation of turbine blading coupled by shrouds or by underplatform dampers using the Harmonic Balance Method can be found in (Sextro 2000) and in (Panning et al. 2004). However, it was noted that this single harmonic approximation was often unable to accurately capture the nonlinear forced response (Poudou and Pierre 2003). Therefore, the Multiharmonic Balance Method was developed which uses a multiharmonic approach for the transformation of the nonlinear equations of motion into the frequency domain instead of a monofrequent approach. The Multiharmonic Balance Method is able to accurately and efficiently predict the nonlinear forced response of coupled turbine bladings, see (Petrov 2004a) and (Laxalde et al. 2006). In this paper, the Multiharmonic Balance Method is applied to cyclic symmetric systems in order to compute the nonlinear forces response. In order to account for realistic operating conditions, an arbitrary traveling wave type excitation is considered, resulting in a multiharmonic forced response. Exploiting the cyclic symmetry of the system, it is possible to represent a full bladed disk model by a single cyclic sector model reducing the size of problem. The formulation of the cyclic symmetry constraints used in the multiharmonic forced response analysis is explained in detail. The proposed Multiharmonic Balance Method for cyclic symmetric systems is exemplified on a simple nonlinear cyclic symmetric turbine blading model. In addition to the fundamental harmonic response, superharmonic vibrations are excited by the higher harmonics of the nonlinear interaction forces. The question which temporal harmonics and which nodal diameter mode shapes of the bladed disk have to be retained in a modal approach to predict the nonlinear multiharmonic vibration response is investigated in detail. A. Bavastri, F. J. Doubrawa F. All rotating systems are subjected to residual unbalance forces proportional to speed squared. Many modern high speed machines operate above the first critical speed. Systems which operate close to this speed and have low damping can be lead to a destructive vibration condition due the amplification factor. It is well known that dynamic vibration absorbers are simple devices attached to mechanical structures (primary system) to reduce vibrations and noise levels. The absorbers may be designed using viscoelastic material which has frequency-temperature dependent properties. One of the models that describes this behaviour and has a good precision is the four parameters fractional derivative. G (Ω ) = G 0 + G∞ b1 (iΩα (T )) β 1 + b1 (iΩα (T )) β The already general methodology developed by PISA/CNPq group, using equivalent parameters, is expanded to include flexural vibration control on rotating machinery. The primary system is modeled using modal parameters obtained in the frequency domain space state. Following that general methodology, the compound system (primary system and absorbers) can be represented in a modal subspace of the primary system space state for a given temperature. (iΩA + B )Y (Ω) = N (Ω ) The dynamic absorbers itself are modeled using generalized equivalent parameters to allow that the compound system problem be solved using only the generalized coordinates of the primary system, even if they introduce new degrees of freedom. In this modal subspace of the primary system, the optimal design of the dynamic absorbers is performed using a non linear optimization algorithm. The cost function is defined by the Euclidean norm of the so called principal coordinate vector. ~ ~ −1 P(Ω ) = iΩ I +Ψ T AΘ + Λ +Ψ T BΘ Ψ T N (Ω ) [ ( ) ( )] Using this technique the natural frequencies of the absorbers are optimally tuned. The absorbers are attached to a floating bearing located in a modal active point of the rotating system to prevent the absorbers to rotate. On a real rotating system composed by one shaft, two rolling bearings and several disks, the performance of the designed DVA’s is checked. Two kinds of tests and assemblies were conducted. Bump tests with an instrumented impact hammer to obtain the frequency response function and diagrams of orbit were measurements using a set of proximiters sensors. The first ones without rotation and both of them performed with one and two absorbers per axis. The results of the tests show a good agreement with the numerical calculations and also confirm the expected good performance. The absorbers let the system run quit on the critical speed and above while without them was not possible neither get close. Using the proposed methodology is possible once having the primary rotating system modal parameters optimally design dynamic vibration absorbers and allow the compound system to operate above one ore more critical speeds smoothly and quit. This will expand the speed operating range of rotating systems and also let low damping ones to run above or also over critical speeds. Paper-ID 23 Vibrations and Bifurcations of Turbocharger Rotors B. Schweizer Turbochargers are interesting dynamical systems, since they exhibit different nonlinear vibration effects such as self-excited vibrations (oil whirl/whip phenomena), bifurcations, jump phenomena or synchronization effects. Rotors of turbochargers are often supported in floating ring bearings. The dynamical behavior and the stability of turbocharger rotors are mainly influenced by the bearing nonlinearities. This paper discusses oscillations and bifurcations occurring in turbocharger systems with fullfloating ring bearings. A flexible multibody model of the rotor/bearing system, including a detailed hydrodynamic model of the full-floating ring bearings, is presented. Run-up simulations are carried out and compared with corresponding test rig measurements. Furthermore, a new kind of instability - called Total Instability here, and not reported in earlier works to the author´s knowledge - is introduced, which can occur in rotors supported in full-floating ring bearings. Bifurcation into Total Instability is dangerous and often leads to the destruction of the rotor. Turbochargers are used in diesel and gasoline applications in order to increase the performance and efficiency of engines. The exhaust gas sets the turbine wheel into rotation so that the compressor wheel compresses ambient air for the intake of the engine. Apart from the thermodynamical point of view, turbocharger systems are also very fascinating from the mechanical point of view. Turbochargers are high speed rotor systems. For mechanical and economical reasons, turbocharger rotors are quite often supported in floating ring bearings, which give rise to a highly nonlinear system behaviour. There are two types of floating ring bearings: Full-floating and semi-floating ring bearings. In this paper, we only consider rotors in fullfloating ring bearings. The bifurcations occurring in such rotor systems are analyzed by means of run-up simulations. It should be stressed that analytical or semi-analytical bifurcation analyses would be very involved or even impossible - for the complex rotor systems considered in this paper. Paper – ID 25 Semi-active control of torsional vibrations of drive systems by means of actuators with the magneto-rheological fluid T. Szolc, Ł. Jankowski In the paper control of transient torsional vibrations induced by the electric motor during run-ups of the radial compressor drive system is performed by means of actuators with the magneto-rheological fluid. The main purpose of these studies is a minimisation of vibration amplitudes in order to increase the fatigue durability of the most responsible elements. The theoretical investigations are based on a hybrid structural model of the vibrating mechanical system as well as on sensitivity analysis of the response with respect to the actuator damping characteristics. In this paper dynamic investigations of the entire drive system are performed by means of the one-dimensional hybrid structural model consisting of continuous visco-elastic macro-elements and rigid bodies. In the proposed hybrid model of the compressor drive system successive cylindrical segments of the stepped rotor-shaft are substituted by torsionally deformable cylindrical macro-elements of continuously distributed inertial-visco-elastic properties. Here, inertias of the compressor impeller and gears are represented by rigid bodies attached to the appropriate macro-element extreme cross-sections, which assures a reasonable accuracy for practical purposes. This model is employed here for eigenvalue analyses as well as for numerical simulations of torsional vibrations of the drive train. For suppression of transient torsional vibrations excited by electromagnetic torques generated by the asynchronous and synchronous motor there are proposed various control strategies based on actuators in the form of control brakes and control clutches. Such actuators generate control torques that are functions of the shaft actual rotational speed, which consists of the average component corresponding to the rigid body motion and of the fluctuating component caused by the torsional vibrations. The optimal control should effectively suppress vibrations without influencing much the rigid body motion of the drive system. In order to satisfy these requirements, some consideration on a dynamic behaviour of the passive drive system during run-ups is necessary. In the case of the asynchronous motor and the drive system with control brakes the computed optimum control is a simple hold-and-release strategy. Here, the applied procedure yields the globally optimum open-loop control, where maximization of damping effectiveness and minimization of dissipated energy are regarded as the fundamental objectives. In the case of the synchronous motor equipped with control clutches the active and passive control strategies are proposed. Active control, which reduces to the closed-loop with respect to the external excitation frequency, enables us to generate optimum damping level expressed by appropriate time-dependent damping coefficients of the clutches. However, passive control leads to proper a priori selected optimum damping coefficients, values of which remain constant during the whole run-up process. Both approaches are similarly effective in terms of the maximum transmitted torque, but the passive control is easier and cheaper in application. In the computational example, start-ups of a large radial compressor driven by the asynchronous and the synchronous motor of the same nominal power 5 MW are investigated. This system is accelerated from a standstill to the nominal operating conditions characterized by the rated retarding torque 31831 Nm at the constant rotational speed 1500 rpm. The values of these quantities are reduced to the motor shaft, where the compressor impeller rotational speed is 4.932 times multiplied by the gear stage. The retarding aerodynamic torque produced by the compressor is described by a parabolic function, as proportional to the square of the impeller actual angular velocity. As it follows from the numerical examples, in all considered cases optimum control by means of the applied actuators with the magnetorheological fluid can effectively reduce the transient torsional vibrations to the quasi-static level of the loading transmitted by the drive system, where dynamic amplifications of the responses due to resonance effects have been almost completely suppressed. Nevertheless, it should be remarked that all control strategies proposed in this paper result in some braking of the rigid body motion of the drive system, which leads to a slight run-up retardation in time. In the next step of research in this field, by means of the actuators with the magneto-rheological fluid, a semi-active strategy, based on the closed-loop control for drive systems in steady-state operating conditions under randomly excited vibrations, is going to be developed. Paper-ID 29 Application of Active Lubrication Techniques to Different Types of Journal Bearings I.F. Santos The development of new machine elements for dissipating vibration energy is of fundamental importance in order to keep low levels of machine vibration. This claim can be easily verified by checking the number of new passive and active elements under development stages in the last 15 years. For the passive elements one can mention the seal dampers and the squeezefilm dampers, while for the active elements (mechatronic elements) one can cite: hybrid squeeze-film dampers; hydraulic active chamber systems; variable impedance hydrodynamic journal bearings; actively lubricated bearings; active-controlled fluid bearings; magnetized journal bearings lubricated with ferro-fluids; foil-magnetic hybrid bearings, journal bearings with controllable sleeves, bearings controlled by means of piezoactuators, etc. The development of Active Lubricated Bearings (ALB) has a relatively short history when compared to Active Magnetic Bearings (AMB). Research activities over approximately one decade have shown the potential of such a kind of mechatronic device, and this paper gives an overview of the promising field of Active Lubrication. By simultaneously combining the hydrostatic and the hydrodynamic lubrication in a journal bearing, one refers to the hybrid lubrication, which offers the advantages of both lubrication mechanisms. When part of the hydrostatic pressure is also dynamically modified by means of hydraulic control systems, one refers to the Active Lubrication. By the association of electronics, control design and hydraulics, the active lubrication simultaneously allows the reduction of wear between rotating and non-rotating parts of the machinery (main purpose of the bearing) and, in addition, the attenuation of rotor vibration. This attenuation of rotor vibration allows the machine to work in a wider operational range, since the operational properties of the bearings can be modified according to the imposed operational conditions. Feedback control systems have been applied to tilting-pad bearings with the goal of attenuating vibration, but are still in research and development stages. Such systems have also been applied to hybrid multirecess journal bearings. To manufacture an actively lubricated bearing, orifices are machined in the bearing surface. The orifices are connected to servo valves by means of pipelines. The lubricant is injected through the orifices into the bearing gap with a controllable pressure, allowing changes in the hydrodynamic pressure distribution and consequently in the oil film resultant forces. The benefits of ALBs are strongly related to the feasibility of compensating dynamic excitations, which are the source of the vibration problems. Moreover, they allow adjustment of damping and stiffness at different levels. Depending on how precise the active forces can be described and measured, active lubricated bearings may also be used in the future as a calibrated shaker, allowing parameter identification and fault detection “in-situ”. Summarizing, the most important advantages in using actively lubricated bearings are: • • • • • • • • reduction of lateral vibrations of the rotating flexible shafts and compensation of rotating machine failures due to rubbing, blade loss, etc; enlargement of the stable operation ranges and stabilizing rotating machines operating under destabilizing aerodynamic effects; modification of the bearing coefficients and improvement of damping characteristics; compensation of thermal effects; reduction of the required start torque of the motor due to the elimination of dry frictions between rotor and bearing surface by injecting oil into the bearing gap before the rotor starts; delaying unexpected machine stops due to machine failures; aiding the identification of machine parameters, which are difficult to calculate or predict, by applying well-known excitations onto the shaft; helping vibration diagnosis by using the built-in active control and incorporating higher performance functions. Some of the advantages have been theoretically as well as experimentally demonstrated and others are still under investigation. Paper-ID 32 Nonlinear Vibrations and Heuristic Problems in Rotor-Bearing Systems J. Kiciński, P. Pietkiewicz, G. śywica The paper presents authors’ opinions concerning the nonlinear phenomena, especially the hydrodynamic instability and heuristic problems taking place in journal bearings and rotor-bearing systems. Development of hydrodynamic instability is especially important for rotating machines which work at high speed and high temperature. Because in these conditions the large deformations of bearing bushes may appear, it is important to take into account the deformation effect in numerical model of slide bearings. The second subject, which is discussed in presented article, is heuristic problem in modelling of rotor-bearing systems. In this paper the influence of random changes of selected data on the dynamic state of rotor was discussed. The new computer codes and examples of experimental verification have been presented. The paper presents also the abilities of computer simulation using the methods characteristic for the model-based diagnostics. The presented opinions are only considered an example of capabilities of this line of science. Moreover, they were used for formulation more general conclusions. The presented results of numerical calculations should be interested for designers, research workers and people involved in operating and diagnosing of rotating machines. Paper-ID 36 Rolling bearing monitoring using classification techniques M. Cococcioni, P. Forte, S. Manconi, C. Sacchi In the field of predictive maintenance, the most popular technique for machine monitoring, including rolling element bearings, is vibration analysis. Neural networks are parametric classifiers that can be employed to assign the vibration signals to classes corresponding to the various kinds of defects in the bearings. Usually, the signals are represented as vectors of numerical characteristics extracted either from the time domain signals or from the frequency domain signals; on the basis of these numerical values a classifier assigns a signal either to the class of faultless bearings or to the class of the damaged ones. From the literature, it results that there does not exist a standard set of characteristics nor a standard methodology to generate such a set. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to automating the diagnosis of rolling element bearing defects, proposing a standard methodology. To achieve that, we used a classification approach, adopting both statistical classifiers and neural networks. Experiments were carried out on two different experimental test rigs processing the vibration signals of monitored bearings with the PRTools software in the Matlab environment. The first experimental test rig is a closed-loop rig designed for testing spur gears. The system was monitored by an accelerometer mounted on the support of one of the two conical roller bearings supporting a gear shaft. Such a bearing was artificially damaged with a longitudinal scratch on the outer raceway. Therefore the vibration signals could be classified into two classes corresponding to the faultless bearing and to the damaged bearing respectively. The second experimental test rig was set up to monitor two conical roller bearings mounted on a parallel lathe by means of a uniaxial accelerometer directly fixed to the external casing of the bearing housing. In this case, two scratches were produced on the outer raceway of one bearing; and a scratch on the outer raceway of the second bearing. Therefore the data could be classified into four classes corresponding to the faultless bearings, or to the combinations of defects. Unlike the classical approach, no assumption was made on which part of the signals could be the most suitable to discriminate between the various “health states” of the bearing; instead, we automatically identified the part of the signal that expresses, on the one hand, the similarity of signals related to the same defect, and, on the other hand, the diversity of the signals corresponding to different defects, working in the frequency domain. Therefore, we represented the signals using the moduli of the first 500 coefficients of the positive spectrum of the FFT. We then tried to automatically identify the frequencies that could discriminate among the different types of signals (discriminating frequencies) using a statistical classifier. We then applied a Multi-Layer Perceptron neural network that, based on the signals represented through the amplitudes at the discriminating frequencies, automatically recognizes the specific class each signal belongs to. Finally, we studied the robustness of the method to possible noise by analysing the trend of the percentage of correct classification of the signals after adding increasing levels of noise to them. The experiments performed on the vibration signals of the bearings monitored on the two experimental test rigs have shown that the proposed method achieves better results (100% correct classification) than traditional vibration methods, including the neural networks used in the literature on similar data. In particular, the proposed classification method is sensitive to different types of defects. Furthermore, the guidelines of the method can be a standard methodology for automatic diagnosis to be applied whenever it is possible to collect an appropriate set of signals, relative to the “basic defects” under consideration, for classifier training. The noise analysis showed that in a classification context, the approach has an appreciable level of robustness to noise. Actually we classified the noisy signals by means of a classifier trained on signals without noise. In real situations we could filter noise out of the acquired signals before their classification; alternatively, we could train the classifier with signals with added noise, choosing the noise level to be added depending on the specific situation of interest. Paper-ID 37 Numerical simulation of dynamic overloads in bevel gears subjected to periodic excitation C. Carmignani, P. Forte, G. Melani, G. Di Carlo Aircraft transmissions are characterized by relatively low flexural natural frequencies due to their light structure and high excitation frequencies due to rotation and meshing at high operating speeds. Therefore they can be more easily subjected to some dynamic phenomena, such as travelling wave vibration (TWV) and related resonance. In spite of the fact that TWV might be a problem especially for gears having thin rim and disc, few papers can be found in the literature dealing with such a topic. This paper deals with the simulation of the vibratory behaviour of a real spiral bevel gear subjected to the periodic excitation due to meshing. The final objective of this work is to find the most critical operating conditions for the component as regards dynamic overloads. The proposed methodology, once validated by comparison of the simulated results with the experimental ones, could be a useful tool to predict the dynamic behaviour and the reliability of the component even in the design phase. Experimental tests are under way. The investigation focused on the drive gear, the driven gear being assumed rigid. The simulations were carried out on three different finite element (FE) models: a 3D solid model, a solid model partially reduced by component modal synthesis (CMS), a simplified “shell” model. The first two models, useful to get accurate stress results to be compared with experimental data, were employed to tune the simplified model that on the other hand was necessary to reduce the computational cost of a numerical test campaign on the dynamic behaviour of the gear. Firstly the natural modes and frequencies of the gear were determined by FEM modal analysis both without and with the meshing constraint. Resonance conditions were identified on the basis of a speed-frequency diagram. In particular we focused on the correspondence of the excitation meshing frequency to the natural frequency of a nodal diameter mode of the unconstrained model, taking into account the effect of forward and backward TWV. Secondly a transient dynamic analysis was performed on the fixed gear simulating the rotating contact condition with respect to the gear reference system, moving the constraint around the gear. The numerical tests were performed considering a variable torque applied to the drive gear, the other being constrained, accounting for the meshing excitation. In order to highlight the effects of the meshing excitation, only the sinusoidal part of the torque was applied. Moreover, since it was not possible to simulate the experimental rotating speed ramp variation, steady conditions at different constant speeds were simulated instead. The displacement measurement by two virtual proximity sensors was simulated by determining the time history of the displacement of two reference nodes located with respect to the meshing constraint as the sensors of the experimental apparatus. Since in this model the gear is still while the meshing constraint rotates around it, the position of the sensors varies accordingly. Analysing the frequency content of the virtual displacement signals it was possible to identify the more critical vibration modes for the model. It is remarked that not all the resonance peaks excited at the meshing frequency were the highest. The presence of peaks apparently not related to meshing excitation frequency could be explained by not entirely reached steady conditions or as an effect of the constraints. As far as the critical conditions are concerned the time history of the stress state was evaluated in some points of the model in order to estimate the effects of the dynamic overloads. However, once the dynamic critical conditions are identified with the simplified model, more accurate stress analyses could be performed with the CMS reduced model. Paper-ID 41 Methods to Incorporate Foundation Elasticities in Rotordynamic Calculations U. Ehehalt, B. Lüneburg, R. Staubach, C. Daniel, J. Strackeljan, E. Woschke Rotating machinery is generally supported on a foundation which is, to a certain extent, flexible in the operating speed range. Currently the dynamic effects of foundation are neglected for standard design of rotor trains in rotordynamic calculations. Foundation and rotordynamic analyses are conducted nearly independently of each other. However, due to the demand for more precise rotordynamic calculations it is reasonable to take the elasticity of foundation and bearing housing into account in the calculations. Including the dynamics of the foundation in the rotordynamic calculations can be achieved by using the substructure/transfer function method. The aim of this method, which has been known for decades, is to separate the system into a main structure and a substructure. The elastic substructure, in this case the foundation or foundation and bearing/bearing housing respectively, is harmonically excited with a unity load in degrees of freedom and frequency range of interest at the coupling nodes to the rotor train. From the response at the coupling nodes, a complex flexibility matrix depending on excitation frequency can be derived. After inversion of the matrix, the real part represents the stiffness, which can be added to the stiffness matrix of the rotor system. The complex part of the matrix can be added analogously to the damping matrix. Since these matrices depend on the excitation frequency, only harmonic analyses can be carried out with this procedure. Another method of including foundation dynamics consists of generating a foundation model which can be incorporated in the rotordynamic calculations directly. On the one hand, this can be done by a truncated modal reduction of the supporting system. Thus, eigenmodes of interest can be included via a reduced model. On the other hand, a model of the foundation using beam elements is appropriate. With these approaches the differential equations cover the total rotor foundation system, and besides the harmonic analysis, eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes can also be calculated. However, in this analysis truncated foundation models are not considered. This study shows how the two different but well known techniques can be applied practically to real rotor systems for steam turbines for power generation. It can be verified that the methods used are appropriate for standard design of rotor train. The vibration amplitudes of the unbalance responses are used to compare the different technique results. This is reasonable since these values are generally measured at the bearing locations of rotor trains while measurements taken directly at the foundation are rare. It is shown that the transfer function method is an easy and powerful method for including the foundation/pedestal dynamic characteristics in the rotordynamic calculation. For the bearing pedestals used in the balance shop the resonance frequencies as well as amplitudes in the unbalance response calculation using the transfer function method yields very good results. For the complex system of a whole rotor train based on a foundation, the transfer function method leads to convincing results concerning frequencies of an unbalance response. By including the foundation, measured resonance frequencies can be explained. By implementing the foundation in the rotordynamic program, it is not only possible to carry out harmonic analyses but also to determine eigenfrequencies and mode shapes. With these calculation tools beside realistic shaft vibrations also realistic pedestal vibrations can be calculated. Combining rotor and foundation in one model results in a multiplicity of eigenfrequencies. It is possible to evaluate these coupled rotor-foundation-eigenfrequencies and critical resonances can be identified by means of unbalance response calculations. With the described methods, calculation tools are available which can easily be used within the standard calculation process of rotor trains. WAS LEISTET DIE VDI-RICHTLINIE 3835? Paper-ID 44 Hybrid Control Concept for Active Damping of Bending Vibrations in Rotating Machines B. Petermeier In vibration technology unwanted vibration levels are mostly reduced by an increase of the damping capacities of the system. Hence, an increase of damping leads to an increase of dissipation of vibration energy. However, in many applications traditional passive damping mechanisms reach practical limitations. For example, in rotating machinery the increase of internal damping of the rotor shaft can cause instability. Within the last decade active vibration damping has become an interesting alternative to purely passive or semi-active damping methods. One of the most advanced technology in rotating machinery is active magnetic bearings. In this paper an innovative control concept for active suppression of bending vibrations in rotating machinery is proposed. One or both passive roller bearings of a rotor are complemented by active bearing units. The structural response due to exact periodic disturbances of the system is measured at convenient locations at the rotor. Displacement sensors detect a disturbance and transfer signals to a hybrid control algorithm. The latter consists of a feedback controller and an Iterative Learning Control (ILC). For feedback control design an H∞ synthesis is carried out. Utilizing the structured singular value µ a procedure known as D-K iteration or simply µ-synthesis is used for the controller design. It is expected that this design provides better robustness qualities than conventional controller design methods. The aim of the feedback control is to provide robust stability to the system and achieve conservative robust control performance. The ILC control takes benefit of the exact periodic disturbances that can originate, for example, from a constant rotational speed. A Kalman filter is employed to provide an estimation of the sufficient system states for the learning control. Due to the non-minimum phase character of the system, there are two different ILC design techniques employed named ”D-type ILC” and ”stable inversion design”. Numeric sim- ulations are carried out to show the feasibility of improving the control performance of the hybrid control compared to a solely feedback control. Within several iterations (revolutions), the learning controller significantly improves the feedback control signal. After amplification the resulting response signal is transmitted to the active bearing, and applied to the structure. Numerical simulations are performed using a finite element model of a test cylinder system composed of beam- and lumped mass/stiffness elements. The investigations show that the proposed methods are very effective in suppressing transient vibrations. The response action prevents further vibrations even in case of a persistent disturbance. Hence, the stability and the vibration behavior of a rotor can significantly be improved. The proposed active damping concept can be used in any kind of rotor systems and active bearing type. Nevertheless, first investigations are focused on elongated cylinders that perform decoupled bending vibrations due to external disturbances. Paper-ID 45 Vibration Identification on large Steam Turbine Rotor Trains for Power Generation B. Lüneburg, U. Ehehalt, R. Oswald, U. Kotucz Steam turbine generator sets for power generation must fulfill a number of criteria. Next to the thermo-hydro-dynamic properties like heat rate, efficiency and power output the vibration behavior of the turbine generator set is an important criterion for generally assessing the turbo set. If high lateral vibrations occur at any of the multiple measuring locations of the rotor train, the optional solutions and mitigations must always be well balanced because applying measures usually have significant impact on the availability of the power plant. E.g. performing a balancing shot require up to one week of stand still. Consequently, the theoretical evaluation and the related accuracy of any vibration analyses becomes an important and monetary high valuably fact. Driven by these requirements, Siemens Energy Fossil Power Generation has already developed a vibration identification analyses procedure [4]. The main focus is to determine and evaluate the source of unbalance of operating rotor trains with regard to their location and quantity. Based on the measured relative or absolute shaft vibration on the one hand and the rotor dynamic model on the other hand the procedure allows identifying the optimal counter measure like balancing location and balancing weight. Finally, this procedure enables to evaluate and define measures which most likely will be the best choice to solve an issue. The procedure presented is strictly based on the existing standard rotor dynamic layout procedure for large steam turbine generator turbo sets for power generation. Consequently, the development and the qualification of the vibration identification procedure enhance the accuracy of the standard layout procedure simultaneously. This paper describes the improvement on the analyses procedure which was first published in 2006. Thereafter, the analyses capabilities of the rotor dynamic standard design procedure were significantly improved and validated. This ensures that the differences of measurement and calculation remain small and limited. Intensive investigations like comparisons of measurement and calculation on a test rig and in the shop balancing facility have been accomplished. In addition support structure, foundation coupling and geometric disturbance analyses features have been worked out. Depending on the availability of information content of the measurement, the identification is based on amplitudes only or on amplitudes and phase angles respectively. Simulations give evidence that this procedure will run reliably and accurate if the reality fit perfect to the rotor dynamic model characteristics. The sensitivity analyses revealed that the identification procedure is failure forgiving with regard to model uncertainties due to the mathematical approach chosen. A manipulation of stiffness and damping matrixes as proposed in multiple publications might improve the accuracy – but is not essential to obtain realistic results. Finally, test rig measurements at a dynamic overcritical shaft- journalbearing system have been performed. The identification of this system can be carried out reliably for one, two and even three dimensional unbalance distributions. In the near future, the step from test rig to shop balancing facility will show, if even more realistic flexible rotor- support systems can be evaluated using the identification method presented in this paper. Paper-ID 47 Non-Linear Rotor-Dynamics Modeling using Co-Simulation Alexander Siemers, Dag Fritzson This paper describes a rotor-dynamics application, a grinding spindle arrangement, that contains several non-linear components, e.g., two ball bearings supporting the spindles shaft and a control system determining the rotation of the shaft. To be able to study the different parts in detail they should be modelled in specialised simulation tools, i.e., model control systems in Simulink and multibody systems in MSC.ADAMS. The continuously increasing performance of modern computer systems has a large influence on simulation technologies. It results in more and more detailed simulation models. Different simulation models focus on different parts (sub-systems) of the complete system, e.g., the shaft, bearings, and flexible housing in a spindle arrangement. However, to understand the system as a whole it is necessary to investigate several or all parts simultaneously. This is especially true for transient (dynamic) simulation models with several interdependent parts. One solution for a more complete and accurate system analysis is to couple different simulation models into one coherent simulation, also called a co-simulation. An approach for mechanical system co-simulations is presented that is based upon a general framework for co-simulation and meta-modelling. Several tool specific simulation models can be integrated and connected by means of a meta-model. All simulation tools that participate in the co-simulation implement a single, well defined, external interface that is based on a numerically stable method for force/moment interaction. A grinding spindle arrangement has successfully been modelled and simulated using the cosimulation framework. Four simulation models have been connected by means of a meta-model, that contains an MSC.ADAMS spindle model, two BEAST ball bearings fixing the shaft in the housing, and a Simulink driver that controls the rotation of the shaft.
