Globalization processes make workers and students more mobile, while domestic and international conflicts as well as humanitarian and environmental catastrophes cause flows of refugees and asylum seekers. At the same time, international is a highly politicized topic as potential destination countries are not always eager to experience larger inflows of foreigners. Hence, in order to better understand international migration flows and their restrictions we resort to a politicaleconomy perspective in this seminar. We will cover topics such as immigration legislation, citizenship legislation, asylum policy, immigration quotas, immigration amnesties, and border enforcement, thereby focusing on national vs. European immigration policy.
