und die Abholzung bereits enorm fortgeschritten ist, können
nachhaltige Baumaterialien wie Bambus und Kokosfasern zur
Deckung des Bedarfs an sicherem Wohnraum beitragen. Vor

declares an enthusiastic Regula Schegg. “Hence, the local residents should reap benefits from a twofold perspective.”
There is still much work to accomplish in order to reach that
point: Indeed, sustainably changing the lives of the poorest
strata of the population necessitates establishing and proving
the business concept. Still, the signs are favorable. The success
of the practical trials last year as well as positive reactions on
the part of future homebuyers spark hope among the project
partners, paving the way for accomplishing their mission in the
Philippines by the end of 2015 and applying the business model
to other countries too – thus transforming the construction
materials of the future into those of the present day.

sich die Geschäftsidee etablieren und bewähren. Doch die
Zeichen stehen gut. Die positiven Reaktionen der zukünftigen
Käufer lassen die Projektpartner hoffen, ihre Mission auf den
Philippinen bis Ende 2015 zu vollenden und das Geschäftsmodell auf andere Länder übertragen zu können. Damit die Baustoffe der Zukunft zu Baustoffen der Gegenwart werden.

aber nicht auf ihre Kosten. Als ich den Eignungstest bestand und ein Stipendium für das VTC
(Vocational Training Center) Monaragala erhielt, ging für mich ein Traum in Erfüllung. Die Ausbildung zum Tischler schenkte mir Selbstvertrauen. Heute führe ich mein eigenes Unternehmen mit zwei Angestellten.“

of the Hilti Group in the aftermath of the devastating tsunami
catastrophe in 2004. VTC Monaragala provides adolescents
primarily from impoverished backgrounds with the opportunity
to learn a qualified profession such as mechanic, locksmith,
carpenter, plumber, electrician or baker. In addition, the facility
offers computer and English courses as well. The diplomas are
fully recognized by the Sri Lankan government.

Damian Robinson is Director of the OCMA and a respected

diving in the 1950s. Underwater archaeology has continued to
advance and become more publicly accessible in recent years,

I believe that this combination makes our institute something
special: We bring the antiquity of the past back to life thanks
to modern science and make it accessible to the present-day
public.

Gabelo is 16 years old. From a purely statistical perspective, his
chances of surviving the next ten years are considerably less
than for a European of the same age. He has already lost some
of his friends as a result of AIDS or acts of violence. But Gabelo
has been lucky. He lives near the Bloekombos Secondary
School, which has a choir. And singing keeps him off the streets.
Although he already knew some arias of renowned operas,
Gabelo had never before attended an opera, nor even sang in
one. But this year he stood side-by-side with professional singers on opera stages in Cape Town and Johannesburg, worked
together with an international team of artists and, thanks to his
talent, traveled all across Africa ­- via airplane.
“Music can really change one’s life,” declares Gabelo. “It was
one with playing our roles, dancing and dialogue in order to

Für die eigentliche Suche im Katastrophengebiet packen wir

„Je nach Destination müssen wir die erste Hürde schon bei der
Einreise überwinden. Denn bei einem Grosseinsatz setzt sich
ein Team aus bis zu 40 Rettungskräften, technischen Helfern,
Logistikern und Hundeführern mit ihren Rettungshunden zusammen. Fünf Tonnen Ausrüstung werden mitgeführt. Ein falsches
Wort oder ein Missverständnis bezüglich unserer Papiere kann
die Reise eines Helfers am Flughafen erheblich erschweren.
Sind wir einmal an unserem Bestimmungsort angelangt, stellen
wir schnellstmöglich die Stromzufuhr sicher, damit Licht, Funk-
stationen und Computer funktionieren. Dann richten wir unsere
Zelte ein, um die Versorgung der Verletzten zu gewährleisten
unsere Ortungs- und Bergungsgeräte wie auch die medizinische
gerät oder einer der Suchhunde an, gilt es ernst: Ich suche mir
einen Weg durch die Trümmer, die einmal Häuser waren, und
quetsche mich durch enge Spalten. Behutsam und konzentriert
kämpfe ich mich durch Schutt und Bruchstücke zum Opfer
vor. Wie stabil das eingestürzte Gebäude ist, weiss niemand.
Die Arbeit unter diesen extremen Bedingungen ist ohne mein
Team im Rücken nicht zu bewältigen. Nach zwei Stunden habe
ich endlich mühevoll ein Einstiegsloch freilegen können, das
gerade gross genug ist für eine Person. Sofort prüfe ich, ob
der Verschüttete noch lebt und ansprechbar ist. Ich leiste die
Erstversorgung und hebe ihn vorsichtig auf eine Plastiktrage.
Zurück geht es auf demselben beschwerlichen und gefährlichen
Weg. Nach einem letzten, schweisstreibenden Kraftakt kann ich
schliesslich aufatmen: Die verschüttete Person ist gerettet und
wird in unser Zelt gebracht, um medizinisch versorgt zu werden.

ported as well. One wrong word or misunderstanding regarding
our identification documents can lead to considerable complications for the volunteers’ journey at the airport.

secure the power supply as swiftly as possible, enabling
lighting, communication and computer equipment to function.

of the motion detectors or search and rescue dogs uncovers
something, the operation becomes serious: I find a path through
the wreckage that was once buildings and squeeze my way
through narrow passages. Cautiously and diligently, I struggle
through the debris and rubble toward the victim. No one really
knows just how stable the collapsed buildings are. I could not
overcome working under such extreme conditions without the
support of my team. After two painstaking hours, I finally clear
an access way that is just large enough for a person to maneuver
through, then immediately check to see if the victim is still alive
and responsive. I provide emergency medical assistance and
carefully move the victim onto a plastic stretcher, subsequently
returning through the same arduous, dangerous passageway.
Following one last strenuous effort, I can finally catch my breath.
The victim has been rescued and transported to our tent to
receive medical care. All the volunteers are in good health.
The exercise was a complete success. Even though we are
never able to estimate in advance the conditions, dangers and
particularly the human tragedies with which we are confronted,
I have the sense of being well prepared and able to rely on my
team – the next time we are called upon to provide relief.”
