Foreword
Achievements of Austrian higher education institutions, non-university research
institutions as well as enterprises in basic and applied research are outstanding.
Therefore additional funds for research and larger budgets for universities for
the performance agreement period 2016-2018 have been granted in order to
enable continuous development of top-level research results. By strengthening
the cooperation between science and economy it is guaranteed, that innovative ideas of research institutions reach companies as quickly as possible. In
addition to that higher education institutions make a valuable contribution to
education, training and further education of our future specialists and executive
staff, artists and teaching staff.
The booklet “Wissenschaft in Österreich 2016 / Science in Austria 2016”
provides a descriptive overview of the number of study programmes offered,
students’ data of Austria’s universities, universities of applied sciences, p
­ rivate
universities and university colleges of teacher education, and presents basic
information about the Austrian educational system. Additionally, general
information regarding research achievements in Austria and the framework of
research financing in basic and applied research is offered. Data on the participation of Austrian higher education and research institutions in different
national and in the EU-research programmes complete the picture.

Vorwort
Die Leistungen österreichischer Hochschulen, außeruniversitärer Forschungseinrichtungen und Unternehmen in der Grundlagenforschung und angewandten Forschung sind vielfach herausragend. Daher wurden im aktuellen
Finanzrahmen auch zusätzliche Mittel für die Forschungsfinanzierung sowie
eine Erhöhung des Budgets der Universitäten für die Leistungsvereinbarungsperiode 2016-18 fixiert, um eine kontinuierliche Weiterentwicklung der
Spitzenforschungsleistungen zu ermöglichen. Die Stärkung der Kooperation
von Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft gewährleistet, dass innovative Ideen rasch
von den Institutionen zu den Unternehmen gelangen. Darüber hinaus leisten
die Hochschulen auch einen wertvollen Beitrag in der Aus- und Weiterbildung
unserer künftigen Fach- und Führungskräfte, unserer Kunstschaffenden sowie
unseres Lehrpersonals.
Die Broschüre „Wissenschaft in Österreich 2016 / Science in Austria 2016“
bietet einen Überblick über das Studienangebot, die Studierenden und Absolventinnen und Absolventen an Universitäten, Fachhochschulen, Privatuniversitäten und Pädagogischen Hochschulen und enthält Basisdaten zum gesamten
Bildungssystem. Weiters sind Grundinformationen zur Forschung, wie F&EQuote oder Hochschul- und Forschungspersonal, sowie zur Forschungsfinanzierung in der Grundlagen- und angewandten Forschung enthalten. Ergebnisse
zum erfolgreichen Abschneiden österreichischer Hochschulen und Forschungseinrichtungen an verschiedenen nationalen Finanzierungen sowie zur Beteiligung an den EU-Forschungsprogrammen vervollständigen das Bild.
