Noble and wealthy citizens invested great sums in his alchemy projects, which were never completed, but made it possible for the count to live like a king. Even during his lifetime he became a legend, and after his death there were recurring rumors that he had been sighted, alive. How did this man manage to create such a career out of thin air? What is his personal contribution, what is grounded in the secret desires of his time, and what has become legendary over time? In recent times, more and more people are turning to natural medicine and drawing inspiration from those herb gardens of the Middle Ages. Based on medieval sources, the author examines which healing properties were attributed to various plants, how they were used, and explains how herbs can be used today – in teas, infusions, compresses, smoothies and more – to increase our overall well-being. Born near Nuremburg, Germany, Christine Amalia Bischoff studied history, German and psychology at the University of Erlangen. Since earning her doctorate she has focused solely on medieval history, always with an emphasis on monastic life. Her recollections of her grandmother’s herbal knowledge piqued her scholarly curiosity about the treasures of medieval monastic gardens, monastic apothecaries and herbal books.
