Dear friends and colleagues,
We are delighted to present to you our new rights list for Fall 2015 and would like to invite you
to find out more about the latest titles as well as strong backlist titles of our imprints
Patmos – Thorbecke – Grünewald – Eschbach – Schwaben
Our list offers a wide range of titles, covering psychology, self-help, memoirs, parenting, spirituality, religion and theology, as well as gift books and children’s books. While we have a rich
tradition in publishing religious children’s books, we have recently ventured into publishing
general children’s books, including fiction, encouraging children to become more aware of values and what really matters in life.
Our imprint Thorbecke specializes in books on cookery, lifestyle and gardening, on the one
hand, as well as books on history and cultural history, on the other hand.
To find out more about our authors and titles, please visit our foreign rights website at
www.verlagsgruppe-patmos.de/foreign_rights.php. A click on the logo of the respective
imprint on the right-hand side will take you to the specific rights section of each imprint, for
example, www.patmos.de/foreign_rights.php for titles published by our imprint Patmos.
Using the navigation bar on the left-hand side, you can select individual titles from different
categories. You will then be able to view English summaries, key selling points, up-to-date information on rights sold as well as biographies of our authors, illustrators and photographers.
Also, there are information sheets, synopses and sample translations available for download. A
detailed search function will help you find the information you need even faster!
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like to receive advance materials, reading copies
or any further information on our titles and upcoming co-editions.
We would also be delighted to discuss our list with you at the Frankfurt Book Fair (3.1 A 105).
Please don’t hesitate to contact us to arrange a meeting.
We look forward to hearing from you!
With best wishes,

When a woman is diagnosed with an incurable illness at the age of forty
and her husband pledges to stand by her side through everything and anything, it may seem self-evident. When this illness not only weakens his
beloved wife, but also causes her to disappear as a person like a pencil
drawing being erased right before his eyes, then it takes on an entirely
different dimension.
Hans Jürgen Herber recounts bravely and with disarming openness what
it means to gradually lose his young wife and the mother of his son to
Alzheimer’s disease. He describes the journey of a relationship that is
touching, but may be irritating or even provocative. Perhaps it will even
inspire you to search for unusual solutions. This is a book that will never
let you go.

CAROLA THIMM, born in 1968, studied administrative law and worked for the Ministry for Social Affairs in Schleswig-Holstein. She was also a passionate diver and
diving instructor. She currently lives in the
city in which she was born in northern
Germany.
A personal story can hardly be more dramatic. Carola Thimm was five
months pregnant when an aneurysm in her brain burst. She fell into a persistent vegetative state, was artificially fed, could not speak and did not respond to stimuli. Carola Thimm didn’t even experience the birth of her
daughter. For five years she remained in this condition, until she slowly became conscious again.
In her astonishing book, Carola Thimm describes her experiences and feelings during this period of time, as well as how she has managed to master
her life anew since then. She had to relearn how to walk, speak, brush her
teeth and only gradually comprehended that she was the mother of a daughter who was already five years old. This is a startling book about a courageous woman and provides extraordinary insight into the phenomenon of
the persistent vegetative state.
Diana Müller, born in 1977, trained at
the Catholic journalism institute ifp in
Munich and is now an editor at Schwabenverlag near Stuttgart, Germany.

ISBN: 978-3-8436-0656-1 | Patmos | Paperback |
176 pages | 14 x 22 cm | € 14.99
Our family of origin affects us far more than we are aware
re of.
Patterns, values and guidelines we absorb, often exertingg influence on us for generations, are not only the basis off our
strengths and approaches to problem solving, but also off our
weaknesses and roadblocks. These become noticeable when
tuniwe get in our own way or don’t take advantage of opportunities for development. When we make flimsy excuses forr rejecting an attractive job offer, for example, or ruin a great love
through petty conflicts.
In this book, Rosa Rechtsteiner conveys to us how we can
consciously unearth the rules in our own families and use that
insight to promote powerful processes of change. Using many
examples and graphic depictions, she clarifies how we cann put
our own family patterns behind us and finally set off onn our
own life course.

128 pages | 12 x 19 cm | € 12.99
Stop constantly criticizing yourself, have the courage too try
something completely new – many women between 40 and
50 would like to be kinder to themselves. But for many, it isn’t
easy to do something for their own benefit. Women, in particular, often tend to put their own needs last. And the changes
nges
that occur in the middle phase of life – from menopause
se to
children moving out of the home – are additional contributibuting factors that leave many women dissatisfied. Rita Steininger gives her readers lots of tangible tips for framing this
time of change with energy and joy.
This is a book that encourages women in mid-life to be kind
to themselves and make their own physical and mental
ental
well-being a priority.

The classic book on envy and jealousy in a newly revised edition
The emotions envy and jealousy are taboo. We prefer to repress them or project them on
other people. But that means they remain dangerous for our self-confidence and our relaothe

advantage of a great opportunity for our personal development when we deny
not taking

these unpleasant feelings. She encourages us to consciously perceive our own envy and

History brought to life and made relevant for today.
Jan Hus criticized the power seeking and greed of the Church in his day; he set
Christ above the papacy. His teachings were condemned at the Council of Constance, and in 1415 he was burned at the stake as a heretic. Dialogue between Jürgen
Hoeren and Eugen Drewermann reveals how surprisingly current the thought of
Martin Luther’s predecessor is.

Classic stories newly analyzed and interpreted for the times we live in
Legends and myths are an integral part of the Western European culture; many
of us recall a few things about the Battle of Troy or Odysseus’s wanderings. But
what are these narratives really about? In this book, Eugen Drewermann explores with a perspective honed by depth psychology, why love, suffering and
death – three constants in human existence – are the predominant themes in
many ancient myths, and how a deeper and correct understanding of these old
texts can help us better understand life today.

Fairy tales describe in timeless images the necessary path to becoming genuinely human. Fairy tales are road markers
for the soul; they lead along the path of wisdom through hardships and curses to a world full of wonder and the sources
of happiness from which everyone can draw. They give us courage to believe in the validity of our own lives despite the
obstacles, fears or feelings of guilt, and to follow the truth of our own hearts without qualification.
For many years, Eugen Drewermann has taken a keen interest in the wisdom of fairy tales, myths and dreams, especially
the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. On the occasion of his 75th birthday in June 2015, his interpretations of the most
important Grimms’ fairy tales are finally available again, in a beautifully designed edition.

point in that direction. Francis stands for another kind
d of
end: the ship of the Church should sail away from the harbor

Church for just such a departure.
Beginning with the pope’s life, Paul M. Zulehner demonmonstrates his core concerns: his commitment to a Church off the

for example during the preparation and conduct of the synod

of bishops on the family. Both ranges of topics are explored

deeply through contributions by recognized experts, includcluding the politician Wolfgang Schüssel, social ethicist Friedriedhelm Hengsbach and scholar Wolfgang Mazal. This is a passionate plea to play a part in steering the ship Church in a new

Traditional Church doctrine explains the origins of evil with Satan. But is it
truly necessary for Christianity to incorporate such a negative force that is
directed against the God of love and of life? Meinrad Limbeck vehemently
objects: the evil one, Satan, doesn’t exist! Still, the pressing questions remain: What is the source of evil? Whence suffering, oppression, exploitation and wars?
Limbeck thus looks for clues in the freeing and healing message of Jesus.
He finds unaccustomed, biblically grounded answers and in so doing, motivates us to believe that we can live and act in beneficent, healing ways.

The Count of Saint Germain –
Alchemist or Imposter?
A biography
ISBN: 978-3-7995-0669-4
Thorbecke
Hardback with dust jacket
ca. 280 pages
14 x 22 cm
ca. € 24.99
You had to have seen the man to understand our gullibility – that’s how
contemporaries described the Count of Saint Germain, who claimed to
possess many secrets. It was said he could make precious gems, extend life,
heal illnesses...
His charm and his behavior gave him access to the highest circles: he mesmerized Madame Pompadour, astonished Casanova and convinced Ludwig XIV not only to equip a laboratory for his alchemy experiments, but
also became the king’s messenger during secret negotiations with England.
Noble and wealthy citizens invested great sums in his alchemy projects,
which were never completed, but made it possible for the count to live like a
king. Even during his lifetime he became a legend, and after his death there
were recurring rumors that he had been sighted, alive.
How did this man manage to create such a career out of thin air? What is
his personal contribution, what is grounded in the secret desires of his time,
and what has become legendary over time? Thomas Freller unpacks the image of an epoch that was splendid and curious, but simultaneously deeply
uncertain, greedy for new saviors and self-declared wise men and scholars,
who were both praised to the heavens and persecuted as charlatans.
Historian Thomas Freller, Ph.D., lives
in Malta and works as a lecturer and publicist. He published several books in the
German and English language and is considered specialist in the history of the
Mediterranean area.

Using things that grew in monastic herb gardens and the knowledge of
their predecessors in antiquity, medieval monks and nuns were able to alleviate or even heal many human afflictions, and so those cloister gardens
became centers of medieval medicine and natural healing. In recent times,
more and more people are turning to natural medicine and drawing inspiration from those herb gardens of the Middle Ages.
Based on medieval sources, the author examines which healing properties
were attributed to various plants, how they were used, and explains how
herbs can be used today – in teas, infusions, compresses, smoothies and
more – to increase our overall well-being.
Born near Nuremburg, Germany, Christine Amalia Bischoff studied history,
German and psychology at the University
of Erlangen. Since earning her doctorate
she has focused solely on medieval history,
always with an emphasis on monastic life.
Her recollections of her grandmother’s
herbal knowledge piqued her scholarly curiosity about the treasures of medieval monastic gardens, monastic apothecaries and
herbal books.
