900 YEARS OF HISTORY
Walk back in time to the founding
of Berchtesgaden and discover its
fascinating 900-year-old history.
The first settlement was called
„PERTHERSGADEN“
and the Augustine Abbey was
founded around 1100. From 1559
the little prince-provostry became
an independent principality but
Berchtesgaden was incorporated
into the kingdom of Bavaria
in 1810.

The path is well-marked.

Ludwig I, from 1903 used as an apartment house.

Old Berchtesgaden
Cemetery
Founded in 1685, protected by the
historical society; famous people
buried here: Richard Voss, Moritz
Mayer, Anton Adner (1705 - 1822)
the oldest citizen of Berchtesgaden
who transported handmade goods
(wooden items and toys) far and
wide on foot. At the age of 113 he
climbed Munich's cathedral towers.

Franciscan Church
Built in 1480, late Gothic church with
two naves. First a convent of the
Augustine Order and from 1695 until
the present day, a Fransiscan monastery. Located inside part of the monast-

ery is the Berchtesgaden National
Park Info Center - used until 1973 as
the Berchtesgaden Court House.
Across the street: The Berchtesgaden
Folk Theater (Bauerntheater) and Hotel Watzmann - a brewery from 1828
until 1908 called Oberbräu.

Also called Reichenbachsteg: Located
halfway along the path is the Reichenbach Plaque - builder of the brine
pipeline (Soleleitung) in 1816 - 1817
which runs from Berchtesgaden
via Ramsau and Wachterl to
Bad Reichenhall.
Weinfeldhof
Former vineyards of the Prince Provosts from 1400 on.
• Possibility: continue up the hill to
Cafe Lockstein which offers a
beautiful panoramic view over the
Berchtesgaden area. Or continue
via Nagllehen/Kreiskrankenhaus
to Hilgerkapelle (chapel), built in
1725.

Locksteinstraße
Via the Locksteinstrasse and the "Am
Rad" road, you reach Adelsheim
Castle, built in 1614, that now houses
the folklore museum with Berchtesgaden handicrafts.

Nonntal
Former Augustine convent gave it its
name "nuns' valley". One of the oldest
settlements in Berchtesgaden, it is a
self contained compound constructed
in the alpine style. The Schachern
cross of 1625 is an old blessings site.
The Kanzlerhaus was built in 1560;
the Catholic parish house made of
local marble, built in 1841.

Formerly the Schrannenhalle, built
1873 - 1875.
Mundkochhaus: former Chancelor
house built in 1643 and located just
above the town hall. The town hall
fountain was erected in 1913, to
commemorate the centennial of
Berchtesgaden being a part of
Bavaria. St. Andreas Parish Church
built in 1700, still stands in its
original form.

Romanesque cloister from around
1200 with interesting pillars and pilasters. The castle's museum houses a
collection unparalleled in southern
Bavaria. Well worth the visit.
Arcades
Frescos from Josef Hengge 1929 and
1952 as a reminder of the fallen soldiers of both world wars. On the Neuhaus archway a bronze plaque by A.
Essler commemorates the bombing of
Obersalzberg on April 25th 1945.
Berengarplatz
This is the square between the Parish
Church and the Abbey Church.
In 2002 it was inaugurated on the
occasion of Berchtesgaden's 900 year
celebration in memory of Count
Berengar von Sulzbach who fulfilled
his mother's pledge to found an
Augustine College of Cannons.

The Neuhaus inn was built by Prince
Provost Jacob II Puttrich as an abbey
tavern. Fountain erected in 1677 by
Maximillian Heinrich (Prince Provost
as well as Prince Elector of Cologne),
renovated in 1860. Hirschenhaus built
in 1594, former guest house, rear of
building displays monkey facade dating from 1610.
The first arch displays a sundial and
seven coats of arms. This is the entrance to the pedestrian zone.
Privileged location - one of the most
beautiful squares in the Bavarian alps.
Crown Prince Rupprecht fountain,
built in 1960, commemorating
150 years of Berchtesgaden being
part of Bavaria.
Stiftskirche
(Abbey Church)
Built by the Augustinine monks;
three-naved Gothic structure with
an attractive early Gothic Chancel
(1283 - 1303); impressive tombstones
of former Prince Provosts from the
15th to the 19th centuries; steeples
hit by lightning and rebuilt in 1866.
