1 Windmills in Baerl
The two restored windmills from the
first half of the last century and the
village church in Baerl (b.c.1200)
contribute to the village charm of this
rural suburb to the north of Duisburg.
In the Baerler Busch woodlands and
the nearby Lohheide Lake there are
6 Ruhrort Harbour District
For centuries navigation has played
an outstanding role in the history of
Ruhrort, a district sited at the confluence of the rivers Rhine and Ruhr.
Even today this is still evident. At the
so-called Hafenmund (harbour
mouth) lies the Schifferbörse - now
a restaurant - where for many decades freight and towing business was
conducted between ship-owners and
shipping agents. If you walk along
the towpath beside the harbour basin
and past the water-level indicator
you will come to the Mühlenweide,
a large area of meadowland used for
occasional springtime harbour concerts.

The Mercator Treasury provides a
comprehensive review of Gerhard
Mercator’s widely diverse works. Included in its exhibits are astronomical
instruments designed by Mercator, a
large number of famous maps and a
pair of precious globes, the Globe of

Heavens (1551).

3 No. 1 Address for Steel
Since the turn of the century the
northern part of Duisburg has been
heavily marked by iron and steel production. Hamborn is the number one
address in Europe for steel as this is
the site of the largest blast furnace in
the world, operated by ThyssenKrupp.

which can accommodate river-going

it provides the best possible links to
water, rail and road communications
and even has access to air traffic.
The best way to experience the
inland harbour is by taking a boat
trip on one of the boats belonging
to the Weisse Flotte (see highlight 4).

The last of two lifting towers recalls
the time when a steam ferry loaded

steam-driven lifts in the towers regulated the difference in height between the railway line on the bank
and the ferry on the Rhine. The ferry

The transformation of the inner harbour site into a new “harbour district”

Duisburg's most innovative projects

aspects. The Garten der Erinnerung

work he has deliberately left the outer
walls of demolished houses and stairways untouched in order to recall the

The Burgplatz (Castle Square), formerly
the site of the weekly market, is surrounded by important historical evidence
of the city’s history. Amongst the items
to be found in the late Gothic Salvatorkirche (Church of our Saviour) (13161415), which was built on the foundations of a Roman basilica, are the memorial slabs of the universal scholar and
cartographer Gerhard Mercator (15121594) and the first rector of Duisburg’s
historical university, Prof. theol. Johannes Clauberg (1622-1665).

Historical Duisburg
Memories of the eventful history of
Duisburg are kept alive by the partly
reconstructed mediaeval city fortifications, the Old Market archaeological Zone , the late Gothic Salvatorkirche (Church of our Saviour) and the
neo-gothic Town hall behind the Burgplatz with the statue of Mercator.

Street life
There is always something going on in
Duisburg. In addition to the theatres,
museums and concert halls Duisburg's
streets and squares are regularly used
for attractive, popular entertainment
throughout the year: starting in early
spring with the traditional carnival
struction of the Rhine Canal in 1828.
In 1893 the harbour was extended to
the east by enlarging the timber dock
and broadening the harbour basin,
thereby creating an inner harbour. The
face of the new port was characterised
by grain silos, mill buildings and
warehouses. Leading names in the
timber and grain trades established
themselves along the harbour basin and
flourished until the end of the 1960s.
In 1989 an ambitious urban architectural redevelopment scheme was set in
The charm of Duisburg’s city centre lies
in its successful blending of historical
and modern elements, the harmonious
proximity of life and work, shopping
facilities and entertainment.

Shopping
The Königstraße, Duisburg’s attractive
high street, extends from the Central
Station via Kuhstraße and Münzstraße
to the Schwanentor at the inner harbour. Principally conceived a spacious
boulevard with transparent roofing
over the shop fronts, its stores and arcades are a magnet for shoppers, independent of the weather. Here and in
the adjacent streets you can find a
wide variety of boutiques, specialist
shops and department stores whose
broad range of products is enough to
satisfy every taste and requirement.
And afterwards you can treat yourself
to a snack in one of the cafés and bistros.
Word has got around that shopping
