duisport expects handling record for 2011
It has been possible to continue the extremely positive developments already recognizable in the middle of the year into the
second half of the year. Thus the duisport Group is expecting total
handling volumes of approx. 130 m tonnes in 2011 for the Port
of Duisburg including the private ports. Of this 64 m tonnes are
attributable to dusiport Group ports.

LOGPORT
Kühne + Nagel
Kühne + Nagel expands further in Duisburg
Big party in Dubliner Strasse
Happy faces at the inauguration: Honorary president and majority shareholder Klaus-Michael Kühne of framed Port CEO Erich Staake (left) and Karl Gernandt,
Chairman of the Board Kühne + Nagel
'Big investor, anchor investor, showcase investor.' The Swiss logistics corporation Kühne + Nagel (K+N) is praised to the skies
in Duisburg. Because K+N is expanding further in the Port of Duisburg. The corporation is about to make its fifth investment in
its Duisburg logistics campus. In doing so it had only held the official opening of its new warehouse halls in Dubliner Strasse
on the logport site in September.
(gran) "In the past three years alone
Kühne + Nagel has created 225,000 sq.m
of warehouse space in Germany," said
Hans-Georg Brinkmann, Chief Executive
Officer of Kühne + Nagel (AG & CO.) KG
based in Hamburg on the occasion of the
opening of the new warehouse halls in
Dubliner Strasse in Rheinhausen at the
beginning of September. "The contract
logistics business is buzzing," he enthused.
K+N is expanding and investing in this
business sector. The logistics service provider, actually an all-rounder in sea and
airfreight as well as in overland transport
and now in contract logistics, is particularly profiting from the trend to outsource
logistics services in this division. More and
more companies from manufacturing
industry and retail are contracting out
their warehousing, merchandise distribution and other services, such as packing,
to logistics service providers like K+N
to save costs and use the specialists'
expertise.
New campus concept
Here K+N uses a campus concept in large
logistics centers such as in Duisburg. By
concentrating on various logistics facilities
for different sectors economies of scale can
raise efficiency, create synergies and flexibly manage peaks in demand. Put simply:
costs and benefits are optimized for the
logistics service provider and the customer.
According to K+N a logistics campus basically has three characteristics: a minimum
size of around 50,000 sq.m, an excellent
location as well as trimodal infrastructure
– like in Duisburg.
The campus concept has now been implemented in Duisburg for the first time.
With around 160,000 sq.m, over 100,000
sq.m of which is in logport in DuisburgRheinhausen, Duisburg has since become
the largest K+N location, followed by
Hamburg with nearly 150,000 sq.m. An
additional logistics campus with an area of
45,000 sq.m initially is being planned in
Leipzig. So it's no wonder that the Administrative Board of Kühne + Nagel International AG and numerous customers and
business partners came to the official
opening. "Internationally operating retail
LOGPORT
Kühne + Nagel
and industrial companies need logistics
chains that work seamlessly. The advantages of the Duisburg location as a central
logistics turntable for worldwide flows of
goods combined with our integrated process expertise make it possible for us to
optimally manage our customers' supply
chains," said Karl Gernandt, President of
the Administrative Board. "We've been
among the largest investors in the Duisburg port area for years and this new commitment underlines the significance that
the globally operating Kühne + Nagel
Group attaches to the location." He can
probably count on the agreement of Honorary President and majority shareholder
Klaus-Michael Kühne, who was also
among the guests. Because he was the
person who set course for Duisburg / logport together with port boss Erich Staake
in 2000, when they met the state government under then Premier Wolfgang Clement in the old Krupp canteen on the logport site.
New expansions planned
The extension had only just been inaugurated when K+N already needed more
space in Duisburg again. Despite the new
expansion the "the end of the line" had
not been reached said Staake in any case
at the opening ceremony. "We are currently holding discussions with Kühne + Nagel
about a new project," said the port boss
without giving any details away. Only this
much: he wants to set all the machinery
in motion to make a new expansion possible for his showcase investor.
Up to now the corporation had put around
80 million euros into the facilities in log-
duisport magazine December 2011
Many guests at the big celebration on the logport area
port alone, explained Brinkmann. K+N
has invested around 35 million euros in
the expansion by 42,000 sq.m of warehouse space now opened. The halls
were built by the Hellmich Group from
Dinslaken.
K+N has already been present with a
65,000 sq.m logistics center on Blumenkampshof in the Duisburg Kaßlerfeld area
of the port on the right bank of the Rhine
since the 90s. One obviously satisfied customer there is the computer and printer
manufacturer Hewlett Packard (HP) with
its central supplies warehouse for Europe,
the Middle East and Africa. Because Volker Schmitz, Distribution & Logistics Director of the Imaging & Printing Group of HP
for the EMEA region, reaffirmed the cor-
poration's commitment to the Duisburg
location and to their partnership with
K+N in his speech at the opening ceremony. In contrast, the repeated expansion in
logport has mainly been for the consumer
goods corporation Johnson & Johnson.
Additional customers include Airberlin
and the carrier system manufacturer
Thule. Negotiations are currently being
held with a new customer from abroad,
from the household appliance sector
according to reports.
"Duisburg is our heart in North Rhine
Westphalia and one of our most important
handling locations worldwide," said Brinkmann. 750,000 consignments a year are
handled for customers in Duisburg every
year. The number of jobs in Rheinhausen
has risen from 80 to 250 in the last two
years. A further 400 employees work in
the Kaßlerfeld district. K+N employs
around 500 people in contract logistics
alone in Duisburg.

Kühne + Nagel
From seaport forwarding to a world
corporation
For many years in Duisburg: Kühne + Nagel
Kühne + Nagel is a global transportation and logistics company, based in Schindellegi in the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland.
This is the first sentence in the online encyclopedia Wikipedia under the heading Kühne + Nagel. What sounds like a peaceful
idyll in the Swiss mountains is actually one of the largest logistics groups in the world and a success story. It has a name:
Klaus-Michael Kühne. The company founder's grandson stands for the steep rise of the forwarder to among the best in the
world.
(gran) The company, founded by Friedrich
Nagel and Alfred Kühne as a sea port forwarder in Bremen in 1890, is one of the
world's leading logistics service providers
today. It has over 61,500 employees at
900 locations in over 100 countries, sales
of over 20 billion Swiss franks and is a full
service provider in sea and air freight, contract logistics and overland transport.
Kühne + Nagel is seen as the Number 1 in
sea freight, Number 3 in airfreight and
contract logistics and Number 6 in the sector in overland transport in Europe. More
than seven million square meters of warehouse space are managed worldwide.
Initiating internationalization
Already entrusted with running the company in 1966 at the age of 29, Klaus-Michael
Kühne and a team of committed executives
emphasized the internationalization initiated by his father Alfred in the 50s and the
dynamic growth of the corporation. By purchasing his own ships Kühne even attempted to become a shipowner in the 70s and
80s. But the company was shipwrecked
and he had to sell parts of the corporation
to the British Lonrho Group. But Kühne
recovered and was able to buy his shares
back and later successfully float them on
the stock exchange. Since 1994 Kühne +
Nagel has been a publicly owned company
and holds investments in over 200 companies worldwide, mostly K+N foreign subsidiaries owned by the corporation.
Since then Klaus-Michael Kühne has
"passed the baton" to the younger genera-
tion. Karl Gernandt, born in 1960, followed him as the President of the Administrative Board of Kühne + Nagel
International AG at the beginning of 2011.
"Now that we have succeed in placing
Kühne + Nagel-Gruppe firmly among
world's leading logistics companies and it
is on a successful and ambitious course of
growth, I would like to place a further part
of my responsibilities in younger hands,"
said Klaus-Michael Kühne back then.
Today he is the Honorary President and
remains the majority shareholder. Through
Kühne Holding AG, which is in the sole
ownership of Klaus-Michael Kühne, he
holds 53.25 per cent of the shares in
Kühne + Nagel International AG. Kühne

since 1975. With a fortune estimated at

two billion US dollars, he was placed at
277th in the famous Forbes List of the
richest people in the world in 2004.
Kühne is the sole donor of the charitable
Kühne Foundation, to which he contributes five million Swiss franks a year and
that will later control the company's
assets. Kühne promotes research and education in logistics with the money, as well
as medical, cultural and humanitarian projects.
Expanding contract logistics
In the recent past Kühne + Nagel has primarily expanded business with contract
logistics. The purchase of the ACR Group
in 2005 paved the way. The acquisition
was the largest in the company's history
up to that time and catapulted K+N into
the Top 5 of global service providers in
this division. This offers what might be
called all-round support from warehousing, picking and transport up to additional
services such as packing and assembly. In
the course of globalization and the international division of labor, logistics will more
and more become a networked element of
global value creation chains. Thus the
demand for supply chain management
solutions has risen in many globally oriented sectors. As a result, alongside the
strong international forwarding business,
this has opened up new business opportu-
Worldwide growth rate
nities for Kühne + Nagel, which can be
improved even further by offering additional services, so-called value added services.
New takeovers
That K+N remains on course for growth
has been shown by the acquisition tour in
the last few months alone. In mid-July the
Brazilian Grupo Eichenberg with 700
employees was taken over to strengthen
the Brazilian business. Just three days later
the company announced the purchase of
the Dutch fresh food logistics company J.

Amsterdam. The company employs 260
people and specializes in airfreight with
flowers, cut flowers, fruit and vegetables.
In October the German company Drude
Logistik with 150 employees in overland
transport was taken over to build up general cargo logistics. And the contract logistics business is flourishing too. The large
customer Danone has just extended is
cooperation with K+N in Poland by a further three years in temperature controlled
warehousing and packing services for
food.
In Germany the corporation is based with
Kühne + Nagel (AG & CO.) KG in Hamburg. There are 10,000 employees in Germany at 100 locations and storage space
of 1.35 million sq.m. In North Rhine
Westphalia, Duisburg is the central location for Kühne + Nagel. Nowhere else
does Kühne + Nagel operate around
160,000 m² of contract logistics area.
Duisburg also has considerable importance
to Kühne + Nagel's sea freight business as
the largest inland waterway port in the
world. Alongside Duisburg the company is
represented at a further eight locations in
NRW and has been for 57 years.

THE PORT
Regionomica study
Port of Duisburg is a jobs engine for the
whole region
The employment market and economic effects of the Duisburg logistics location have been investigated for the third time after
2000 and 2006. The study was carried out by the reputable Berlin market research organization Regionomica. The positive
development of the two most important key performance indicators has continued over the past few years. Thus the number of
employees directly and indirectly dependent on the port is now over 40,000 (2006: 36,000). The total value creation attributable to
the port currently amounts to more than 2.7 billion euros (2006: 2.2 billion euros).
(br) "These figures impressively prove that
the dynamism of Duisburg as an economic
location is uninterrupted," said Erich
Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG, with pleasure. "Furthermore, they are proof of the quality of the
location, which has continued to develop
positively despite the economic crisis in
the meantime," continued Staake.
Of the over 40,000 jobs 21,660
(2006: 16,700) are accounted for by
the city of Duisburg. This is equivalent
to almost 14% (2006: 11%) of all jobs
in Duisburg. There is a similar weighting
in value creation, which stands at
nearly 1.5 billion euros for Duisburg.
Positive effects are also expected looking
ahead. Around 60% of the companies
based in the port assume that employment figures will rise in the upcoming
three years.
The proportion of companies in the port
that provide so-called 'Value Added Ser-

vices' has increased by about a third.
Alongside actually transporting and handling goods these companies also process
and refine merchandise, thus generating
additional value creation.
What is new in this year's study is the
question of the satisfaction of the companies based in the port with the services
offered by Duisburger Hafen AG. Thus,
for example. 94% of the companies said
they would recommend these services,
which according to experience is a sign
of high satisfaction with the services
offered. "We are pleased that our tailormade services have been so positively
evaluated by our partners in the port.
This strengthens us in our strategic orientation to further build up our business
model as an integrated service provider
in all logistics segments, “said Erich
Staake.
The market research organization Regionomica carried out three extensive com-
pany surveys followed by simulations and
effects calculations based on these. In
doing so technical discussions and interviews with selected companies and relevant players provided supplementary
qualitative assessments.

THE PORT
Siecop
Metal One subsidiary “Siecop” locates in
the Port of Duisburg
Pleased with the resettlement in Ruhrort (left to right): Tadeshi Sawada, Managing Director Siecop Germany, Markus Teuber General Manager of Duisburger
Hafen AG and Erich Staake CEO of Duisburger Hafen AG
Metal One, one of the global steel trading firms, subsidiaries of Mitsubishi Corporation and Sojitz Corporation, is taking over a
22,000 m² site at the foot of the Oberbürgermeister-Lehr bridge in Duisburg - Ruhrort. Besides an administrative building there
will also be a 5,500m² hall for steel processing and Europe-wide distribution.
(br) Siecop is to receive high quality Grain
oriented electrical steel coils for transformer cores which mother coils are then delivered to the neighboring container terminal
by inland waterway vessels. These coils
will then be further processed in the steel
service center that is being built in Duisburg where they will be processed until
Europe-wide distribution by rail, road and
ship. There is a plan to expand the initially
5,500m² craned hall, which can grow
with the company.
“We are pleased that the global players
Metal One have decided on duisport and
that the Japanese community at the location will grow further,” said Erich Staake,
Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger
Hafen AG. “This commitment once again
makes it clear that the Port of Duisburg is
not only attractive to logistics companies
but also to international companies from
manufacturing industry,” continued
Staake. Construction for the location is
starting in the 4th quarter of this year. It is
intended to begin operations in Ruhrort as
early as mid-2012.
Handling 2011
THE PORT
duisport magazine December 2011
duisport expects handling record for 2011
Even in container handling is expected to set a new record
It has been possible to continue the extre mely positive developments already recognizable in the middle of the year into the
second half of the year. Thus the duisport Group is expecting total handling volumes of approx. 130 m tonnes in 2011 for the Port
of Duisburg including the private ports. Of this 64 m tonnes are attributable to dusiport Group ports. "Even if this development
cools slightly, during the course of this financial year we will realize the best result in the history of the Port of Duisburg," said
Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG.
(br) In ship and rail handling relevant to revenues in the duisport Group's ports an excellent result of 33 m tonnes is also expected.
What is particularly pleasing here is the
increase in ship handling of currently over
20%. In term of groups of goods coal, iron
and steel as well as chemicals have developed well above average.
The duisport Group is on course for a new
record for container handling too. From January to October inclusive over 2.1 m TEU
were handled on the three modes of transport ship, rail and truck. "We are assuming
that the duisport Group will significantly
exceed last year's result by the end of the
year," added Staake.
This extremely positive development has
been taken into account in the Port of Duisburg by further expansion and new construction of important infra and superstruc-
ture projects. Alongside a new CT terminal,
which the duisport Group is building in
Hohenbudberg in the south of the logport
site, RBH, a wholly owned subsidiary of DB
Schenker, is expanding its capacities on the
so-called Kohleninsel in the Port of Duisburg.
By 2014 capacities here will be significantly
extended. Furthermore, Deutsche Bahn is
building the first of two so-called mega hubs
for combined transport in the whole of Germany in the north of the Port of Duisburg.
"This strategic course will create excellent
conditions for future growth in goods transport," said Erich Staake.
duisport largest inland
container port in the world
The Port of Duisburg has once again made the list of the “World Top Container
Ports” and reached its best ever position at 92nd.
As the only inland port on the list
duisport reached 92nd place in the English language trade journal “Container
Management”. Thus duisport came
ahead of ports such as Marseille, Miami
or Piraeus and is the largest inland hand-
ling location for containers worldwide.
What was authoritative here was the
figure for containers handled by ship and
rail in 2010 – this was 1,181,000 TEU,
which represented an increase of 24 per
cent compared to the previous year.

From Duisburg to the Antarctic: Bharati
Polar Station delivered just in time
Sample building in Duisburg
On the occasion of the trade fair transport logistic on 11 May in Munich, on the duisport exhibition stand duisport boss Erich
Staake presented a unique packing and logistics project to build the Indian Bharati Polar Station. This project was successfully concluded with the complete delivery of the construction components to the "Larsemann Hills" building site in the Antarctic
at the end of November.
(dü) As the Indian government's contractor the Bremen company KAEFER Construction GmbH is responsible for the
complete planning and construction of the
polar station and now has the three month
'summer period' at the South Pole available to assemble a ship load full of containers and individual components into a self
sufficient, working research facility.
Thanks to the qualified preparatory work
from the packing and logistics experts
from duisport packing logistics GmbH it
has been possible to carry out the construction phase of the station quickly and
also on time. This is because the project
team from the contractor KAEFER can
draw on an intelligent and sophisticated
component logistics system.
The "New Indian Research Station Bharati",
to give it its official name, is a three storey
steel structure standing on stilts that are
built on pile foundations. "Due to the fact
that the time period for assembly is very
limited in the Antarctic summer the preparatory logistics processes and the appropriate
design and preliminary planning are enormously important, because there aren't any
extension days," said Project Manager Daniel Conrad from duisport packing logistics.
Test assembly in the Port of Duisburg
All the construction components had been
stored on an approximately 24,000 sq.m
site in the Duisburg Nordhafen since the
end of May, followed by the test assembly
of the entire station. The acceptance of the
numerous components was usually done
directly from the manufacturer's work
bench. "Due to delivery difficulties at
some suppliers the assembly time originally foreseen for the test assembly, disassembly and system-compatible packing of all
components and individual parts melted
from six months to six weeks in the end,"
reported Conrad. After the goods receipt

Smooth transition
"As is usual in such projects the different
project phases flowed smoothly into each
other, i.e. until the last day parts were
delivered by truck. These then had to be
allocated to the structures, labeled and
packed. Of course, customs accompanied
the project continually and drew up the
customs paperwork required. Because
alongside the packing material, tools and
certain components were going to be
brought back again after the assembly.
The fact that we were ready punctually
nevertheless and delivered the last container for inland waterway loading at the
neighboring DeCeTe-Terminal two hours
before the deadline in mid-September was
only possible through working three
shifts, weekend work and the high flexibility and commitment of the whole project team," recounted Conrad with satisfaction. In total forty trade and six
commercial employees were involved
with the work around the clock. The
commercial employees also worked on
the practical work in the evenings and
nights when staff were short.
Loading on an icebreaker in Antwerp
While the containers were transported on
two inland waterway vessels to Antwerp
and duisport's own packing facility, 110
pieces reached the loading facility on the
Scheldekai by truck. After another check
of all the containers and packages by the
duisport experts on site, they were loaded
on the ice-going multi-purpose freighter
IVAN PAPANIN from the Russian shipping
line Murmansk Shipping Company
MSCO, which also has space for 334 containers on deck and four on-board cranes.
After a stopover in Cape Town in South
Africa, where fuel and additional building
material from the Indian client were taken
on board, the ship sailed punctually at

from Europe to the Antarctic all climate
zones were going to be crossed and in the
South Polar seas there are the most difficult navigation conditions worldwide with
constant storms. Accordingly we had to
insert drying agents and stable shock
absorbers for the components and facility
equipment packed in the containers and
we had to ensure that quick assembly of
all the components without later drying
time was guaranteed. Here using high
quality packing material played a significant role, of course," reported Conrad.
This included resealing the cut-out container walls with plywood sheets and sealing them with silicon.

in Duisburg the components were
checked for completeness, picking and
allocation to individual construction building areas. The shell of the research station
largely consists of brand new, special prefabricated 20 foot high-cube containers.
After delivery to Duisburg these were initially prepared for assembly by cutting out
the side walls and insulating the ceilings,
floors windows and doors as well as
installing the power supply, lighting and
heating. Then the test assembly by the
contractor began at the end of July followed by disassembly, labeling all parts
and seaworthy and climate protected
packing. "This was one the project's greatest challenges, because during the voyage

Conrad with satisfaction. In addition to
the complete documentation of all parts
available on site, packing the individual
pieces on board the ship according to the
assembly plan was of great help. Incidentally, duisport packing logistics' job will
only end on June 30, 2012. This is when
the repurchase guarantee for containers
that are no longer required at the polar
station expires and this material is expected back in Cape Town at the end of April
next year.
"Of course, the duisport packing logistics
project team is really proud that we completed this extraordinary task on time. But
actually, what we did here is our daily
business. Because basically every new
logistics project presents us with new challenges that we systematically work on
with innovative solutions, good technical
conditions at our locations and the many
years' experience of our staff to the satisfaction of our clients," added Conrad. He
is currently working on new chemical
logistics projects for Pakistan, Russia and
Saudi Arabia. "Alongside the packing we

components and control their worldwide

The new terminal in Gütersloh
Since the beginning of September the East Westphalia economic region has had a direct rail connection to Europe's logistics turntable.
With the 'Westfalica Shuttle' operated by its subsidiary duisport agency the reopened Teutoburger Wald-Eisenbahn-AG (TWE) terminal in
Gütersloh-Spexard has been connected to the Port of Duisburg and its national and European combined transport network.
(br) "Through the new train connection we
are making a decisive contribution to the
further networking of North Rhine Westphalia as a logistics location and we are
taking 17,000 trucks off the roads in our
state per year," said Volker Schmitz, Managing Director of duisport agency. The subsidiary has successfully operated rail connections throughout the region for many
years with the Glückauf Express through
the Ruhr region and the Chemsite-Express
to the Marl chemicals location.
"The Westfalica-Shuttle is connecting the East
Westphalia region directly with the Port of
Duisburg and its combined transport network
for the first time. Thus, together with duisport
agency, we have succeed in offering our customers a multitude of national and European
connections from Gütersloh. Not least the
reopening of the TWE terminal is an impor-
tant step to retain the rail infrastructure in the
Gütersloh district," added Thomas Kratzer, a
member of the management board of Teutoburger Wald-Eisenbahn-AG, in which Captrain Deutschland GmbH holds a majority
stake. With four departures a week initially

Container turntable for rails,

Sealing the continuation of a successful 25 year partnership: Gerhard Riemann, Erich Staake, Hans-Peter Wieland and Andreas Stolte
In brilliant sunshine in the afternoon of July 29, more the 200 guests took up an invitation from neska intermodal to celebrate the
25th anniversary of the Duisburg RRT-Terminal and the inauguration of the new terminal Gateway West. The two trimodal handling facilities belonging to Rhein-Ruhr Terminal GmbH, which is part of the South African Imperial Group, are among the five
most important customers of Duisburger Hafen AG, according to its Chief Executive Officer Erich Staake in a welcoming
address.
(dü) Erich Staake recognized the successful development of the company in the
last quarter century, which has been
actively accompanied by Duisburger
Hafen AG by enabling area expansions
and access to the newly developed logport II site. He said the secret of the success of the RRT company was a motivated, innovative team that was
accompanied by qualified management in
the Imperial and neska Group. "The
Gateway West Terminal in logport II has
enriched the Duisburg location with a
new combined transport turntable with
unique performance, which has made a
considerable contribution to the pleasing
growth figures in the Port of Duisburg,"
said Staake. "Logport II is definitely not
the Imperial Group's last project in the
intermodal area: the development of the
RRT locations in the past 25 years has
sown the seeds for the next steps of this
great company. Good luck to neska intermodal and the Imperial Gruppe!"
Gerhard Riemann, Chief Executive Officer of Imperial Logistics International
GmbH, which is also based in Duisburg,
thanked Staake and his team for their
continually reliable partnership in RRT's
25 year history. He had assessed the
development perspectives skeptically at
the foundation of the company by five
25 years Rhein-Ruhr Terminal
shareholders. Only the concentration of
the stock in the Imperial Group had freed
growth potential and also made possible
the expansion by the logport II site, he
continued. Riemann thanked RRT's customers for their trust and the staff for
their dedication: "The Imperial Group is
doing well and we will continue to
actively accompany neska intermodal's
growth."
The long standing RRT Managing Director Hans-Peter Wieland outlined a company history characterized by growth in a
welcoming address. "The company was
founded in November 1985 by five
shareholders, including Haniel Reederei
Duisburg. Operational business started in
January 1986 on an area of 31,000
square meters with a crane bridge and a
2000 square meter warehouse. In 1999
the second warehouse with 1500 square
meters was built to expand handling
activities in the general cargo area and
the plot of land was enlarged to 39,000
square meters, which was further
expanded to 53,000 square meters in
2004. In 2003 the shareholder structure
was concentrated into equal shares held
by the companies Tieman, Bremen and
Haniel Reederei, Duisburg. In 2005
Alcotrans Container Line Duisburg
acquired the Tiemann stock, moved into
new offices on the RRT site and a complete logistics service provider emerged
dealing with everything to do with containers. In 2006 the terminal area grew
to 77,000 square meters, an additional
track facility to process container block
trains was built and a 2nd crane bridge
was erected, which was inaugurated in
2007.
Today the RRT main facility in Moerserstrasse is a multipurpose terminal with
two 50 t gantry cranes on a 400 m long
quay on which inland waterway vessels
and Rhine coasters can be processed as
well as on the 2x400 m rail facilities. In
addition to handling activities and tailor
made transport concepts, repairs, cleaning, stuffing, stripping and equipping containers are among the RRT's tasks. On
3000 square meters of hall space activities such as picking and storing general
cargo and packing industrial facilities are
carried out. A bagging unit is used to
pack bulk cargo such as plastic granu-

lates, chemical intermediate products and
also e.g. vitamin powder for further processing in the pharmaceutical, food or
animal feed industries. For over two
years the facility has had a tipper chassis
to load granulates from overseas containers into silo trucks and wagons as well as
inland water containers. 12 reefer container connections, four reach stackers of
up to 42 t, a container stacker of up to

goods. The highly efficient terminal software with extensive EDI interfaces linking external systems, including the neska

and thanks to the numerous connections
by rail and ship to the sea ports Antwerp,
Rotterdam and Zeebrugge and inland
waterway terminals in Germany and Italy,
it plays a hub role for neska intermodal,
the umbrella company for marketing the

Hans-Peter Wieland concluded.
Since 2010 a block train of Polish import
coke has been processed in the RRT. This
coke is transported in special containers
and delivered to customers by truck in
the Duisburg area. The logistics concept
developed by neska experts has since
been applied to other block train connections from Poland to Denmark, Kassel
and the Saar region.
The location of the RRT terminal in the

DIALOGistik
Expert contact for small and medium-sized enterprises
Introducing DIALOGistik Duisburg
Transport, handing, storage – these are the classic terms that identify logistics. But today these key words are anything but a
comprehensive description of a logistics company's tasks, because customers demand so much more. Solutions should be
individualized, tailor made, transparent, sustainable and cost-optimal. To be able to meet these high customer requirements,
especially as a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME), logistics service providers need well trained specialists and highly
qualified staff.
(ses) These challenges will be dealt with
independently under the umbrella of
DIALOGistik Duisburg and will be made
particularly easy to understand for SMEs.
Thus DIALOGistik Duisburg has set itself
the target of becoming a central contact
point to bundle logistics knowledge and
expertise. It will act as link between
selected scientific partners and companies
at the Port of Duisburg location. In addition, both a regional business network and
a platform for knowledge transfer, qualification and logistics efficiency will be set
up; probably from May 2012 with its own
office location in the port too.
This project has been made possible
thanks to financial support as part of the
EffizienzClusters Logistik Ruhr initiative.
The main content focal points of DIALOGistik Duisburg come from three research
projects "Scientific Further Education in
Logistics" (abbreviated as "WiWeLo" in
German), "Organizational Innovations
with Good Governance in Logistics"
(OrGoLo) and "Integrated Corporate Social
Responsibility Management in Logistics
Networks” (CoReLo).
The contents of DIALOGistik Duisburg are
particularly oriented on SMUs and cover a
wide range of subjects. Thus among others

Responsibility will be developed along
with IT supported aids, such as a web 2.0
collaboration platform. Tailor-made qualification and further education measures will
also be conceived. In the long term this
range will strengthen the competitiveness
of companies at the port and establish a
port community.
DIALOGistik Duisburg will make contact
with all the companies in the port at the
start of the New Year and looks forward to
a specialist dialog with them as logistic
experts.

16th Ruhrort Port Festival
16th Ruhrort Port Festival: Party mood on the Rhine and Ruhr
Amazing star storm
When magical fire is reflected in the water of the Rhine, when art meets a fair; shooting champions meet ship captains; mixing
colorfully on stages and fairs booths - then it's the port festival in Ruhrort. From August 19 to 22 the city district of the largest
inland port in the world transformed itself into a fairground for the 18th time.a
(hk) And into a public attraction: well over
100,000 people went to the “Party mood
on the Rhine and Ruhr” over the four
days. To get the proceedings underway
"Ruhrort in Flames" conjured up a sea of
light over the river. To conclude, the St.
Sebastianus city guard put the icing on the
cake. And in between bands set the house
on fire every night with their music.
duisport employee Walter Pavenstedt,
who organized the Ruhrort Port Festival
with his team on a voluntary basis
summed up with satisfaction, "Everything
went brilliantly. Even the weather played
ball and that was in no way guaranteed in
this summer." However, a bad weather
warning had to be given to the fair operators three times on Sunday afternoon. But
the thunderstorms stayed away. And why
not? After all, there had already been
enough thunder and lightning over
Ruhrort on Friday night.
Fireworks over Duisburg
The spectacular fireworks – sponsored by
duisport - reached their first illuminated
highpoint on Friday night towards eleven
pm: Ten of thousands of spectators
watched the colorful "star storm" on the
banks. The rockets and cascades lit up the
sky well beyond Ruhrort and the sound
made an even bigger bang as a thunderous
public attraction.
From fireworks under the stars to stars on
the stage. The Rattles rocked the Mühlenweide on Saturday evening, enchanting
their fans with songs like their hit "The
Witch". The original band was the top act
on the big stage on Saturday evening. On
16th Ruhrort Port Festival
the other evenings cover bands turned the
sound of groups like Supertramp or the
Beatles into a live show on the banks of
the Rhine. German hits from the 80s
showed where the Ruhrort party was with
a trio of "da, da, da".
Culture in Ruhrort
The 2011 Port Festival took up the theme
of the successful Ruhrort performance during the cultural Capital year. An art market
on the Neumark put visitors and collectors
in the picture for the first time making it
clear why Ruhrort has made its mark as a
cultural quarter. Art in the 'hood has long
time. What was remarkable is that the paddling of 20 longboats allowed Antonia
Sühs from Duisburg to waterski in the
mouth of the port. Smoky, Dutch tugs
brought typical Rhine flair with them
when they berthed in Ruhrort during the
port festival. Right next to the "Oscar
Huber", which also attracted attention during the four festival days. The sea rescue
cruiser "Fritz Behrens" added a taste of salt
water to the ship parade. Which was fitting, because Ralph Lindenau, Chairman of
the St. Pauli Civic Association from Hamburg opened the port festival with the traditional three chimes of the bell.
Stacey Blatt and Elisabeth Höller organized the project in collaboration with Haniel and also with the Ruhrort Civic Association and the Cultural Office. The
American Stacey Blatt was pleased about
the attention given to her shop window
exhibition by the many visitors during the
port party. A reading by local thriller
author Silvia Kaffkes and the Ruhrort verbal sparring from Thommie and Klaus also
enriched the cultural festival in the quarter. The fair on the Mühlenweide, the fair
booths on the Leinpfad, the culinary quay
on the Richard-Hindorf-Platz – all these
were also very special backdrops and fairgrounds of the city quarter festival.
But the 2011 Port Festival was by no
means just a dry run. A dragon boat regatta churned up the port water for the first

Rudolf Gande from Laar, Dr. Bernhard
Weber, the future head of the Museum of
German Inland Waterways and Anja
Reisewitz from Haniel also belong to the
association and the festival committee.
Olaf Reifegerste put art in the picture for
the Festival Office of the City of Duisburg.
The large companies in the quarter have
also been on board every year and make a
significant contribution to the event's success as sponsors. Walter Pavenstedt: "The
atmosphere was amazingly good this time.
The Duisburgers learned how to smile
again with us."

have been exhibiting their works in the
windows of empty shops since spring.

The visitor from Hamburg not only made
clear the connection between the largest

country. He also pointed to the civic commitment that makes such a festival possible. The Ruhrorter Hafenfest e.V associa-
