Ellen Abbott is a Master in Public Administration
candidate at the Kennedy School and an MBA
candidate at Wharton. She is focusing on economic
and industry development. This summer Ellen will
work at the US Department of the Treasury. Ellen
was a consultant for Deloitte Consulting in Washington DC. She
also spent time in Latin America as a small business development
consultant for TechnoServe. Ellen is from North Carolina and
holds a BS degree in Business Administration. She enjoys traveling,
reading, yoga and tennis.
Salvador Arrona is a Master of Public Policy
Candidate at the Harvard Kennedy School. He
studied before at Georgetown University from where
he received a Bachelor in English Literature and
Sociology. Before Harvard, he was a Mayoral Fellow
at the City of Chicago Mayor’s Office and worked
with Rosen, Bien & Galvan as a Paralegal and with Constitutional
Rights Foundation as a Program Coordinator. Salvador speaks
English, Spanish and Italian.
Samantha Black is graduating this summer from
the Harvard Kennedy School of Government with a
Master Degree in Public Administration. Before
focusing her career on public service, she worked
with Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker LLP as a Law
Attorney in Chicago. Samantha holds a Bachelor in
Social Policy and Political Science from Northwestern University JD
and from the School of Law of the University of California in Los
Angeles. She speaks English and Spanish, and enjoys travelling and
hosting friends.

Barbara Bravo Flores is a student at The Fletcher
School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
Prior to Fletcher, Barbara was an official at the
Mexican Ministry of Social Development where she
coordinated the international agenda of the minister
and managed a pilot project on collective remittances. She also has
worked for an international logistics company and the Mexican
consulate in Montreal, Canada. Barbara has a BA in International
Relations from ITAM in Mexico City.
Jorge Coarasa Bustamante is a Mexican citizen,
currently a graduate student at the Harvard Kennedy
School. Prior to HKS, Jorge was a career civil servant
at the Mexican Ministry of Social Development
where he headed the Planning and International
Relations Unit for four years. He has also worked as advisor to the
UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean,
management consultant for Deloitte and international volunteer for
ADPP Mozambique. Jorge holds a BS in Economics from ITAM in
Mexico City and an MA in International Relations from Universidad
Complutense in Madrid.
Sarah FitzGerald is a Masters degree candidate at
Harvard's Graduate School of Education. She is in
the Mind, Brain, and Education program, learning
to apply recent findings of cognitive neuroscience
to improving teaching. She would like to find a job
with an international development organization
that works to improve educational opportunities in the developing
world. Sarah studied the history of religion as an undergraduate at
Harvard, then worked in banking for two years before moving to
San Francisco to teach high school. She likes to read, do yoga, and
hike.

Andrew Foss is a Master in Public Policy student
at the Kennedy School. His focus areas are energy
and environmental economics and policy. Andrew
worked at NERA Economic Consulting, where he
participated in projects on the EU Emissions
Trading Scheme, U.S. climate policy, and electricity markets. He
received a bachelor's degree in physics in 2003 from Amherst
College. He studied German and Norwegian in college and spent a
year in Norway on a Fulbright Scholarship.
Özge Güzelsu is pursuing a Masters in Public
Administration at the Kennedy School focusing on
the Middle East and development policy. She will
be spending the summer in Syria, Lebanon, Israel,
and the West Bank studying Arabic and
researching Turkey's new role as a diplomatic leader in the Middle
East. Prior to the Kennedy School, Özge was an attorney in Los
Angeles. Born in Istanbul, Turkey, Özge received her B.A. from
Harvard in 1998 and a J.D. from Stanford in 2002. She enjoys
dancing to hip-hop and breakbeats, cooking for large groups of
Germans, and reading novels on her Kindle.
Bruce Haupt is a Master in Public Policy student
at the Kennedy School with coursework in state
and local public finance, transportation, sustainable
growth, and agriculture policy. Bruce worked in
the education and non-profit sectors, in addition to
political campaign work. A former high school
drop out, Bruce obtained his BA in Political
Science from the University of Florida where he was named a 2006
Truman Scholar. When not working, he enjoys meeting new people,
and is a certified rock climbing instructor, SCUBA diver, and
bartender.

Gloria Jin Kim will be graduating this June from
the Harvard Kennedy School of Government with a
Master in Public Policy degree. At HKS, she has
been concentrating her studies in international
security and political economy. Prior to HKS, she
conducted research on North Korean issues and
worked on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Gloria holds a B.A. in
International Relations and History from Stanford University. She
plans to work for the U.S. government on foreign policy issues.
Vagn Knudsen is currently a Master of Business
Administration Candidate at the Universidad de
Los Andes in Colombia. He is the Manager of
LASERTECK S.A. and worked before as an
Investment Banking Analyst with Fiduciaria
Colpatria. Vagn holds a Master degree in BSBM
from Babson College in the US and is fluent in
English and Spanish.
Jessie Ma, from Toronto, Canada, is a Master in
Public Administration Candidate at John F.
Kennedy School of Government at Harvard
University. Her academic interests are in energy
and the environment, corporate social
responsibility, and human rights. She has been a
power systems engineer at Hydro One, a
government-owned electric utility in Ontario, Canada, for six years.
She graduated from the Engineering Science program at the
University of Toronto in 2001 and also started her Master in
Business Administration at York University's Schulich School of
Business.

Argyri Panezi comes from Greece. She studied law at
the University of Athens and is now a trainee lawyer
in Athens, mostly dealing with public law cases. Her
work experience is as a lawyer, working in a law firm
in Athens. She is also a student at Harvard Law
School, focusing on human rights law and
comparative Constitutional Law. After Harvard she strives to work
as a lawyer back in Europe, Greece or an EU organ. Argyri speaks
Greek, English and German and enjoys sports, music, art and
dancing.
Alex Prado is a Master in Public Policy candidate at
the Kennedy School. He is of Cuban-American
descent and has lived in Honduras, Costa Rica,
Peru, the Philippines, Korea, and Miami, where he
was an aide for State Representative Anitere Flores.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from Florida
International University and served as Student Government
President, sitting on the University’s Board of Trustees, and serving
as Vice-Chairman of the Florida Student Association. He is a Cadet
in the U.S. Army's ROTC Paul Revere Battalion at MIT, where he
plans to commission as a Second Lieutenant.
Sara Qutub is a second year Master of Public
Policy student at the Kennedy School of
Government. Originally from Pakistan, Sara has a
specific interest in international development
particularly education. Prior to coming to Harvard,
she worked for the Government of Punjab
(Pakistan). In her free time, she enjoys trekking,
debating, and Indian classical music. Professionally, she is interested
in working in program evaluation, particularly in the education
sector.

Shumaila Rifaqat is studying in her second year
and will be graduating with an MPA in June 2009.
She is Pakistani and was working with the Asian
Development Bank on governance issues before
coming to the Harvard Kennedy School. This is her
first visit to Europe and she very excited about the
trip.
Yuta Tago is a deputy director in the Ministry of
Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan, and
attends the Master in Public Administration
program at the Kennedy School. Prior to HKS, he
held policy-making positions in the Commerce and
Information Policy Bureau, Trade and Economic
Cooperation Bureau, and in the Agency for Natural
Resources and Energy in METI. He holds a Master’s and a
Bachelor’ degree in Engineering from Waseda University in
Tokyo. Yuta is a recreational skier and received the first-class
grading for his ski skills from the Ski Association of Japan. He also
enjoys diving, golf, sailing, and languages (mainly German).
Todd Theringer is a Master of Public
Administration Candidate at the Harvard Kennedy
School. Before coming to Harvard he worked as a
Public Health Administrator and as an Immigration
Paralegal in San Francisco. He holds an Bachelor
degree in Development Economics from Berkeley
University and a Masters in International Affairs
and Political Economy from Columbia university. Todd speaks
English and Spanish.

Stella Tsay is a Master of Public Policy Candidate at
the Harvard Kennedy School. Before coming to
Harvard, she worked in marketing for two years,
helping clients execute television, print and online
advertising campaigns. She holds a BS in
Communication Studies from Northwestern
University. In her free time, she enjoys running and skiing.
Julia Van Alst is a Doctoral Candidate at the
Harvard Graduate School of Education. In her
research she looks at how civic education can
empower students, particularly disengaged and
disadvantaged students, to engage with local,
national, and international systems of power
towards more peaceful, just, and sustainable societies. Julia worked
as a teacher and was effective in engaging youth across diverse
backgrounds in service-learning and community development
projects grounded in research-based best practices. She holds a
Bachelor in Philosophy from the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill and a Master of Education from University of North
Carolina at Greensboro. Julia speaks English and French.
Bernhard Wiesinger is a Mid-Career Master of
Public Administration Candidate at the Harvard
Kennedy School focusing on economics of
Regulation and consequences of the Web 2.0. He
is Director for Regulatory Affairs at Hutchison
3G Austria. Before he used to work for other
Telcos (eg. T-Mobile Austria) and the Federation
of Austrian Industries. Bernhard studied in Vienna and holds a
Master Degree in Law, a Master Degree in Journalism and Political
Science, as well as an MBA. He enjoys hiking, hunting and spending
time with his family.

Fan Yang is a Masters student in the Human
Development and Psychology program at Harvard’s
Graduate School of Education. Before coming to
Harvard, she worked for Save the Children in
Denmark. She also works as a research assistant at
the developmental lab at Harvard. Fan holds a
Bachelor of Laws and International Studies from Peking University
as well as a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Peking
University. She was an exchange student in the International Studies
Program at the University of Copenhagen. Fan speaks Mandarin,
English, and a little bit of Danish.

Kathrin Bimesdörfer is a Master of Public Policy
Candidate at the Harvard Kennedy School with a
focus on political and economic development
studies. Before coming to the US, she worked with
the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) in Laos
and China in private sector development projects.
Kathrin holds a Bachelor degree in Social Science
from Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf and a post-graduate
certificate in China Studies from Peking University. She likes
studying languages and spending time outside in nature. Kathrin has
enjoyed great hospitality travelling around the world and is keen on
giving back some of the good spirit to our fellow students.
Rainer Höll, Master of Public Administration
Candidate, studied Philosophy and Modern German
Literature in Tübingen, Berlin and London. He
worked at the Bertelsmann Foundation in media
policy projects and at the Robert Bosch Foundation
for the International Commission on the Balkans
and on Demography and Old Age. Since 2006, he was program
officer in the „Science and Research” department of the Robert
Bosch Foundation and responsible for science cooperation with
China, research into sustainable resource use and the science
journalism programs. Since 1998, Rainer has supported the
establishment of alumni networks in German schools to improve
career counseling for high school students.

Sebastian Litta is a Master of Public
Administration Candidate at the Kennedy School.
Before coming to Harvard, he assisted the President
of Leuphana Universität Lüneburg in a
comprehensive reform process, worked as a
business consultant with McKinsey in Germany and
as a Robert Bosch Foundation guest lecturer for German politics in
Moscow. He studied political science at Freie Universität Berlin and
at Duke University. At age 17, Sebastian showed his first
international friends around Berlin and Potsdam and started to enjoy
being a tour guide. In 2008, he organized a weeklong study trip to
Moscow. This year, he is especially happy that he will bring the
Harvard group to his home state of Brandenburg.
Mathias Risse has been an Associate Professor at
the Harvard Kennedy School since 2002, teaching
ethics and philosophy. Before that, he was teaching
at Yale. Prof. Risse received his PhD from
Princeton University, and also studied Mathematics
at Bielefeld University in Germany and at the
Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research focuses on questions
of equality and responsibility, equality of opportunity, racial
profiling, majoritarian voting, and global justice, including topics
such as obligations towards the poor, how the global order might
harm the poor, fairness in trade, human rights, immigration, and the
justifiability of the state. Prof. Risse is also the Director of the
McCloy Fellowship Program.

Philipp Rotmann, Master of Public Administration
Candidate, is also a Fellow at the Global Public
Policy Institute (GPPi), an independent think tank
based in Berlin and Geneva where he worked for
three years. His research at GPPi includes
organizational learning and doctrine development in United Nations
peace operations, international police assistance in conflict
environments and counterinsurgency, as well as energy security and
global energy governance. Earlier in his career, he spent three years
as a project manager and team leader in the IT industry. He holds a
B.A. from the University of Erfurt, Germany, where he studied
„Staatswissenschaften“, and an M.A. in International Relations from
Humboldt University Berlin, the Free University Berlin, and the
University of Potsdam.
Lukas Streiff, Master in Public Policy Candidate
2010, is focused on foreign, security, and energy
policy. While studying philosophy, politics, and
economics as well as diplomatic history at the
University of Pennsylvania and at Sciences Po in
Paris, he gained first experience in start-up
management, journalism, strategy consulting, and at
the German Mission to the United Nations in New York. Upon his
graduation in 2006, Lukas took the position of Assistant to the
President of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, Germany's second largest
cultural foundation. The summer before his arrival at Harvard,
Lukas worked for a member of the European Parliament on issues
in security policy and European energy security. He will spend the
coming summer in Pakistan, doing research on security policy and
the geopolitics of energy in Pakistan.

The Germany Trip of the Harvard Kennedy School of
Government is entirely organized by members of the
McCloy Aca demi c Schola rs hip Prog ram.
The McCloy Program offers outstanding young Germans the
opportunity and means to engage in a two-year master degree
program at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. The
McCloy Program is run jointly by Harvard University and the
German National Merit Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen
Volkes). Each year six to seven scholarship recipients are selected
from a large pool of applicants.
The McCloy Scholars come from a wide variety of backgrounds,
combining academic excellence with substantial work experience in
the public or private sector on the national or international level.
They share the desire to make a difference, to assume responsibility,
and to contribute to the improvement of public policy in Germany
and around the world. Prof. Risse is Director of the McCloy
Program.
Leaders from all fields in Germany are encouraged to refer
outstanding young colleagues to the program.
