update In its home city of Stuttgart stands the Porsche Museum, dedicated to this symbol of speed, agility, style and prestige. Designed by Austrian firm Delugan Meissl Associated Architects, it offers drama from every viewed perspective. The exterior is appropriately reflective of the stature and confidence of the brand whilst, within, a dramatic cathedralesque elevator space narrows into the deep exhibition area beyond. Porsche Museum Stuttgart Stretching into the gallery the collection unfolds and meanders through varying levels connected by sloping roads that visitors can steer themselves through and experience over 100 years of automotive design prowess. The lighting concept thoroughly emphasises the contours of this building’s astonishing exterior and interior architecture and provides a remarkable setting for this iconic brand. Neues Museum Berlin As part of the 11 year reconstruction, the museum’s new lighting concept pays tribute to this original principle. Directed, natural sunlight is supported and supplemented by artificial illumination from a minimal number of lighting fixtures. The result is a reserved lighting ambience, seldom detracting from the architecture of this meticulously restored building. This substation building, built by Hans Heinrich Müller in 1926, has a highly linear design which provided a clear direction for the lighting design. Light levels in its very different rooms have been provided by neo luminaires installed as horizontal or vertical lines of light. These narrow yet navigable waterways wind for over 80 km throughout the city centre, spanned by numerous bridges. Recently the grachten and the entire historical old town were supplied with replicas of the original Kroonlantaarns and Ritterlantaarns. In both lanterns, a specially-developed bevelled primary reflector ensures asymmetrical light spot expansion to create a non-glare, warm white light. The new lighting master plan in Roermond on the GermanDutch border emphasises this historic urban space, whilst complementing the surrounding architecture. Specially developed for this specific project, the luminaires not only provide modern, efficient illumination of the town spaces but also serve as sculptural features, both day and night, adding further character. “Les Thermes“ is a futuristic, indoor water park. Viewed from the exterior, it resembles a UFO from outer space. On the interior, its retro upholstered walls provide both colour and texture whilst biomorphic luminaires supply dramatic accent and area lighting. U55 Central Station The U55 has three new stations and is currently 1.8 km long, with future plans to extend it to Alexanderplatz. All three stations were designed by different practices: the ‘Bundestag’ station was planned by Axel Schultes, who also designed the chancellery in the city. Architects gmp were responsible for the new underground station at the main railway station and the Brandenburg gate station, which also includes an interchange to the S-Bahn city railway, was planned by Axel Oestreich. The new ‘House of Finance’ building is a tribute to the architecture of the company headquarters of I.G. Farben, built by Hans Poelzig in 1931, and today houses part of Frankfurt’s Goethe University. The front façade and building elevations have a unique grid design with strictly symmetrical axes - a theme also taken up on the floor, walls and ceiling of the foyer. This is further mirrored in the lighting concept for the space which emphasises the effect by following the structures inherent in the room itself. In the lecture theatres and library/ reading room areas, special air-handling M100 recessed luminaires were used. Client Architect Electrical Contractor Photos Goethe University Frankfurt a.M. The simplicity of the architecture leaves the eye to concentrate fully on the exhibits. This philosophy is taken further forward with the use of simple arrangements of linear luminaires and circular ceiling lights. INGENIEURGESELLSCHAFT MBH The overall lighting design provides flexible solutions for the varied demands on the building. Wood is an important renewable raw material and its use in durable structures and products such as housing or lighting columns significantly reduces a project’s overall carbon impact. Existing houses were renovated and new buildings integrated into this residential area in Holland. Wooden lighting columns enhance any civic environment and their use on this project helped coordinate the lighting with other wooden elements used within the surrounding architecture. Harley-Davidson Museum USA-Milwaukee As well as its exhibits, the focus of this building is to communicate a distinct attitude and way of life. The spectacular Harley-Davidson museum occupies 121,000 m² of exhibition space and tells the history of the legendary US motorcycle brand. The 8,000 exhibits include the first Harley, dating from 1903, a model driven by Elvis Presley from 1956 and the four-metre-long King Kong, which took more than 40 years to construct. The museum’s design is an unmistakable reference to industrial architecture and the clear, geometrical lighting scheme harmonises superbly with the factory building’s deliberate raw design.
