shooting clubs is displayed in all its vitality during the summer funfair, the

Vor mehr als 200 Jahren wurde am
Rhein im Düsseldorfer Süden Schloss
Benrath als Lust- und Jagdschloss
für den Kurfürsten Carl Theodor
erbaut. Nicolas de Pigage schuf eines
der schönsten Gartenschlösser des
18. Jhs.
Das Ensemble gilt heute in seiner
künstlerischen Einheit aus Bauwer
ken, Inneneinrichtungen und den
60 Hektar großen Gärten als eines
der in Europa selten gewordenen
Gesamtkunstwerke des ausgehenden
Rokoko. Das Hauptschloss (Corps de
Logis) vermittelt mit Möbeln, Porzellanen, Gemälden etc. einen Eindruck vom höfischen Leben der 2.
Hälfte des 18. Jhs.. Im Ostflügel befindet sich das „Museum für Europäische Gartenkunst“ und im Westflügel
das „Museum für Naturkunde“.
Am Rande des malerischen Ortskerns von Kaiserswerth erhebt sich
direkt am Rheinufer die mächtige Ruine der mittelalterlichen Kaiserpfalz
des sagenum-wobenen Kaisers Friedrich Barbarossa – einst eine der bedeutendsten Burgen am Rhein.
Die Pfalz war durch Kaiser Barbarossa erweitert worden, nachdem er den
Rheinzoll von den Niederlanden nach
Kaiserswerth verlegt und eine den
Rhein beherrschende Festung benötigt hatte. Mächtige Trachytquader
wurden vom Drachenfels im Siebengebirge per Schiff nach Kaiserswerth
gebracht. Mehr als 50 Meter lang ist
noch heute die imposante Ruine, die
einen Teil der einst viel größeren Kaiserpfalz zeigt. Bis zu viereinhalb Metern dick sind die Mauern des kaiserlichen Bollwerks.
Mit seiner im Rheinland einzigartig
erhaltenen Befestigungsanlage
aus dem 14. Jh. gilt Zons als das
besterhaltene Beispiel einer befestigten Stadt am Rhein. Mit seinem
historischen Kern und der komplett
erhaltenen Stadtmauer mit ihren
zahllosen Türmen und Zinnen zählt
das „Rheinische Rothenburg“ zu den
Besuchermagneten in unmittelbarer
Nachbarschaft von Düsseldorf. Im
Sommer verbindet ein Ausflugsdampfer den Park von Schloss Benrath im Düsseldorfer Süden mit dem
mittelalterlichen Kleinod. Zahlreiche
gastronomische Betriebe bieten his
torisches Ambiente.
More than 200 years ago, Benrath
Palace was built as a pleasure and
hunting palace by the Rhine in the
south of Düsseldorf. Nicolas de Pigage created one of the most beautiful garden palaces of the 18th century. The ensemble in its artistic unity
of buildings, interior design and the
60 hectares gardens is considered
one of Europe’s rare total works of
art of the late rococo period.
The main palace (corps de logis) with
its furniture, porcelain, paintings etc.
gives an impression of court life in
the second half of the 18th century.
Apart from this, a visit to the "Museum of European Garden History"
and the "Natural Science Museum"
in the eastern resp. western wings is
recommended.
On the fringe of the quaint centre of
Kaiserswerth, adjacent to the Rhine
riverside, tower the picturesque
ruins of the legendary Emperor
Barbarossa's medieval fortress –
once one of the most important
castles on the Rhine. The castle,
originally built in the 10th century,
was developed under the reign of
Emperor Heinrich III and enlarged by
Emperor Barbarossa in 1174 – 1184,
when he transferred the customs
facilities on the Rhine from the
Netherlands to Kaiserwswerth and
needed a fortress dominating the
Rhine. Mighty trachyte blocks were
transported by ship from the Siebengebirge Mountains to Kaiserswerth.
The mighty remains of the emperor's
castle, which was much bigger at the
time, are more than 50 metres long
and 14 metres high. Its walls are up
to four and a half metres thick.
Das imposante Wasserschloss Dyck
gilt als eines der bedeutendsten
Kulturdenkmäler am Niederrhein
und kann auf eine fast 1000-jährige
Geschichte zurückblicken. Seit der
ersten urkundlichen Erwähnung im
Jahr 1094 war Schloss Dyck ununterbrochen im Besitz der Familie zu
Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck.
Die auf vier Inseln errichtete
Schlossanlage bildet das Herzstück
der großzügigen Park- und Garten
anlagen rund um Schloss Dyck, dem
„Zentrum für Gartenkunst und Land
schaftskultur“. Wasserflächen, Wege
und die bemerkenswerte Sammlung
seltener und prächtiger Baumarten
des Fürsten ergeben ein herrliches
Ensemble, das als großartiges
Zeugnis rheinischer Kulturgeschichte
gilt und besonders im Frühjahr durch
seine Rhododendron- und Azaleen
blüte ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel ist.

Vor den Toren Krefelds liegt die
Wasserburg Linn, eine der ältesten
Burgenanlagen der Region. In ihrer
heutigen Gestalt stammt sie größtenteils aus dem 13. Jahrhundert.
Südflügel und u.a. die niedrige
äußere Wehrmauer gehören in das
15. Jahrhundert.
Mit Türmen, Zinnen, Bergfried,
Burgverlies, Palas und Kapelle sowie
einer völlig intakten Vorburg bietet
sie, von einem breiten Wassergraben
umgeben, das unverfälschte Bild
einer mittelalterlichen Burganlage.
Das Jagdschloss enthält eine Reihe
von eingerichteten Krefelder Bürgerzimmern des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts, eine komplett eingerichtete
niederrheinische Bauernküche sowie
eine Sammlung mechanischer historischer Musikinstrumente.
Das Museum Schloss Rheydt ist ein
Gebäudekomplex, dessen Ursprünge
bis in das 12. Jahr-hundert zu datieren sind. Das heutige Erscheinungs
bild ist geprägt durch Umbaumaßnahmen Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts,
so dass sich das Museum heute als
einzige komplett erhaltene Renaissance-Anlage am Niederrhein präsentiert. In den letzten Jahren wurde
das Museum umfangreich restauriert
und zurückgebaut, so dass es auch
in den Grundrissen und Raumeindrücken der Renaissancezeit entspricht.
Von der ursprünglichen Ausstattung
des Hauses sind Kamine, Decken
und Wandgemälde sowie Bodenbeläge erhalten.
Im Schloss ist heute das Städtische
Museum Schloss Rheydt untergebracht, das sich mit der Kunst der
Renaissance, des Manierismus und
des Barock sowie der Stadt- und
Industriegeschichte und Archäologie
beschäftigt.
Die wehrhafte Burganlage aus dem
12. Jahrhundert oberhalb
der Wupper diente einst als Stamm
sitz der Grafen von Berg.
Befestigungsanlagen, Rittersaal,
Rüstkammer, Verlies, Schlosskapelle
und Ahnengalerie gewähren Einblick
in Geschichte und Kultur des Mittelalters.
Die Burgsiedlung, ein malerisches
Ensemble kleiner Gebäude, erinnert an historische Handwerk
ersiedlungen.
Von Unterburg aus führt ein Sessellift
den steilen Hang hinauf zum Schloss
und belohnt mit einem herrlichen
Ausblick vom Burgfried aufs Bergische Land.
Das Schloss – in seinen Ursprüngen
eines der bedeutendsten mittelalterlichen Kastelle des Rheinlandes
– wurde durch seine Umgestaltung
im 19. Jahrhundert zu einem der
wichtigsten neogotischen Schloss
bauten in Nordrhein-Westfalen.
Mit dem Umbau wurde ein Gesamtkunstwerk von hohem kunst- und kulturgeschichtlichen Rang geschaffen,
denn das Schloss erhielt neben dem
heutigen unverkennbaren romantischen Aussehen auch eine prächtige
Gartenanlage. Architektur und
Gartenkunst des 19. Jahrhunderts
stehen in lebendiger Verbindung mit
den Kunstwerken des 20. Jhs. aus
der Sammlung van der Grinten –
darunter die weltweit größte
Kollektion von Werken des Künstlers
Joseph Beuys – die in Schloss Moyland ihren ständigen Ausstellungsort
gefunden hat.
The moated castle of Linn, one of the
region's oldest castles, is located just
outside Krefeld.
It dates mostly from the 13th century, whilst some parts such as the
southern wing and the lower fortified
outer walls were added in the 15th
century.
With towers, merlons, donjon,
dungeon, keep and chapel as well
as a completely intact antecastle, it
presents the unadulterated picture
of a medieval castle surrounded by a
wide moat.
The hunting palace contains a
range of rooms furnished in the
bourgeois style typical of the Krefeld
region of the 18th and 19th century,
a completely furnished Lower-Rhine
farmer's kitchen and a collection of
historic mechanical music instruments.
The Museum Rheydt Palace is a
complex of buildings whose origins
date back to the 12th century.
It was given its present appearance
by conversion works in the middle of
the 16th century, so that the museum
is now the only completely preserved
Renaissance style palace on the
Lower Rhine.
In recent years, the buildings have
been extensively restored, so that
its layout and the appearance of its
rooms correspond to the Renaissance period. Of the original fittings
of the house, the chimneys, ceilings
and murals have been preserved.
The palace now houses the municipal
museum of Rheydt with exhibitions
on the art of the Renaissance,
mannerism and Baroque periods, on
town history and industrial history as
well as archaeology.
The fortified castle above the Wupper,
dating from the 12th century, once
served as the ancestral home of the
counts of Berg.
Fortifications, knights’ hall, armoury,
dungeon, chapel and gallery of an
cestral portraits give an insight into
the history and culture of the middle
ages.
The small settlement in the palace
compound, a picturesque ensemble
of small houses, reminds of historic
craftsmen’s settlements.
From Unterburg, a chair-lift carries
visitors up the steep hill to the palace where they are rewarded with
a beautiful view from the castle
keep to the Bergisches Land.
The palace – in its origins one of the
Rhineland's most important medieval
forts – became one of the most important neo-gothic palaces in North
Rhine-Westphalia after its conversion
in the 19th century.
Apart from its present obvious roman
tic appearance, the palace was then
also given a magnificent garden
design, thus creating a total
historic work of art of a high
artistic and cultural value.

van der Grinten
collection –
amongst which the
worldwide largest collection
of works by the artist
Joseph Beuys –, which
have found their permanent exhibition place at
Moyland Palace.

Quadriennale 2010
„Quadriennale 2010 – kunstgegen
wärtig“ lautet der Titel der zweiten
Quadriennale, unter welchem 9 Ausstellungshäuser Entwicklungen und
Strömungen der letzten fünfzig Jahre
bis heute zeigen werden.
Im Fokus werden Künstler und Kunstströmungen aus dem Rheinland stehen. Dabei wird gezeigt, welche Kraft
die Kunst im Rheinland seit den 50er
Jahren des vorigen Jahrhunderts entfaltet hat.
"Quadriennale 2010 – presenceofart"
is the title of the second Quadriennale. The major Düsseldorf art institutions will be displaying examples of
developments and currents in the art
of the past fifty years up to the present day.
The primary focus will be on artists
and artistic currents in the Rhineland.
Once again, the vitality characterizing the Rhineland’s artistic endeavors since the 1950s will become
apparent.

The former residence of the industrial
tycoon Alfred Krupp and his family
was completed in 1873. It was used
as a home and for representative purposes. Today it is a venue for regular
international art exhibitions. Outside
exhibition times visitors can view the
main building, the park and an exhibition on the history of Krupp.

Environment. As a non-profit organization, the Langen Foundation is a
forum for temporary exhibitions and

German UNESCO World Heritage
sites, its buildings being a representative, extremely valuable example of
heavy industry in Europe. Modern
