The WEY UltraFlex Mini PC is a
ground-breaking, powerful and flexible thin client computer and the latest
addition to the WEY product portfolio.

he UltraFlex Mini PC has been designed for users who need the agility
and flexibility of virtual and hosted desktop solutions, but require the power and
versatility of conventional desktop hardware. It offers the processing power of
a modern desktop PC, and the graphics
capability to display UHD resolutions and
drive up to seven monitors in demanding
multi-screen environments. It is a highly
configurable platform for a multitude of
applications when peak performance
plays a crucial role and space is at a premium.
Customers can achieve extremely high
workstation density by mounting up to
eight i7-based UltraFlex Mini PCs in a 3U
19″ chassis.
Power Efficiency
Despite the high processing power, the
WEY UltraFlex Mini PC is extremely ef4
ficient and very quiet. In a three screen
configuration, for example, it consumes a
mere 20W. It generates a low heat output,
helping to create a pleasant working environment with a very low carbon footprint.
Flexibility
Popular applications for the UltraFlex include high-end thin clients, hybrid desktops and virtualised environments, control room applications or integrated video
capture solutions.
Users can also deploy the UltraFlex in a
mixed environment together with standard desktop PCs. Customers use WEY
Mouse Switching software and a WEY
Multifunctional Keyboard or Deskswitch
to switch seamlessly between virtual and
desktop PCs.
The UltraFlex supports a variety of operating systems such as all current Microsoft
Windows versions. Each UltraFlex can
be configured individually with different
processor types, memory and hard disks.
Standalone modules and a variety of desk
chassis are also available.

service providers in
Mumbai rely on Swiss
technology
The emerging financial centre on the
Indian subcontinent relies on Swiss trading floor technology. These solutions are
not inexpensive, but cost-effective.

anks play a major role in financing the
economic boom in India. They raise
capital and provide funding for development.
Innovations follow in quick succession and
21st century technology has certainly arrived
in India. Seven years ago, the State Bank of
India (SBI) decided to refurbish their trading
floor in Mumbai. Today SBI is India’s largest
bank with 219 million customers and 45,487
branches at home and abroad. In addition
to the renovation itself, the SBI trading floor
was to be transformed into a state-of-the art
facility. After a rigorous bidding procedure,
the bank chose the technical solution from
the Swiss provider, WEY - and has never
regretted this decision. Today, SBI remains
completely satisfied with their investment
and their dealing room is still the reference
for modern and efficient trading floors in
India. And because WEY commits to its customers, the company opened a branch office in this booming city in 2008.

Markt und kaufte ein neues Büro in einem
modernen Bürokomplex in Kanjurmarg,

country, live TV streaming is being integrated on the MK06 display. Traders can

news channels directly on their keyboards –
without having to leave their desks or switch
their screens. This is just one way that WEY
enhances trader efficiency with state-of-theart workplaces.

Since last year, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Union

Indian market and purchased a new office in

will continue to serve reliably in a wide variety of working environments for many
years to come. And in twenty years’ time,
we will be able to proudly reflect on how the
WEY Smart Touch has consistently fulfilled
its purpose in the high-tech, fast-paced IT
world for so long.
Smart is better than
good – the prospect of
a new keyboard
The WEY Group launched the first generation of its legendary multifunctional
keyboards in 1996. Its latest successor,
the brand new WEY Smart Touch, will
be brought to market in 2015.
T
wenty years is a very long time in today’s fast-moving IT world. How is it
possible that a keyboard has kept pace for
almost 20 years, still serving thousands of
new customers annually?
There were three determining factors for
the product’s longevity:
• Flexibility, features and functionality
• Adaptive interface concept
• Reliability and robustness
The standards are set very high for the next
generation keyboard, spurring on our development teams. There are a host of new
requirements and technical capabilities
for ultra-modern and efficient workplaces.
WEY has decided to realise a full package
of new features in a completely redesigned
product.
The first thing one notices about the WEY
Smart Touch is its 10″ touchscreen. Users
can now display much more information on

their keyboards, and directly execute more
complex and application-specific inputs.
The anti-glare, capacitive multi-touch surface reacts immediately to the fingertip and
provides the interactivity users have come
to expect.
Conventional keys and two keypads are
available for users who prefer physical
keys over a touchscreen. WEY has also
increased the number of buttons directly
controlling monitors from six to eight. This
substantially simplifies user control in complex multi-screen workplace environments.
A quick ejection mechanism releases the
keyboard from the housing unit and allows
for personal keyboards. Thus, multiple operators who work in shifts can sit at the
same workplace but still use exclusively
their own individual keyboard – a great hygienic benefit. An ergonomic hand rest enhances user comfort.
The WEY Group is committed to promoting
a clean environment and developing green
IT solutions. With this in mind, the Smart
Touch incorporates light sensors which
automatically adjust the brightness of the
screen’s backlighting. Movement sensors
detect the presence of the user, putting the
keyboard into sleep mode when unattended, and waking it up again when the user
returns to the desk.
The WEY Connector Box has long been
the keyboard’s interface to the outside
world. Now, although the interface concept
remains unchanged, product developers
have simplified the design. The next generation is available in the Eurocard format
which can also be conveniently mounted in
19″ chassis. And when all computers have
been remoted, a single PoE+ (Power over
Ethernet) port is sufficient to power and
connect the new Smart Touch keyboard to
the network.
WEY developers have not only retained but
also extended feature functionality in the
new multifunctional keyboard:
• The WEY Smart Touch can access
workstations at multiple locations with
or without a WEY Distribution Platform.
• The WEY Smart Touch can conveniently display video streams and other
applications.
• Audio features significantly expanded.
• End users can customise the look and
feel of their user interface with scripts.

Wie war es möglich, dass eine Tastatur
fast zwanzig Jahre aktuell blieb und jährlich knapp 2000 neue Benutzer begeistern
konnte?
Ausschlaggebend für die Langlebigkeit
waren drei Faktoren:
• Flexibilität und Funktionsumfang
• Adaptives Interfacekonzept
• Zuverlässigkeit und Robustheit
Die Latte für ein Nachfolgeprodukt ist damit entsprechend hoch gesetzt. Doch die
Entwickler bei WEY sehen dieses eher
als Ansporn und haben bereits neue, sehr
bedeutende technische Innovationen vor-
gestellt. Die Möglichkeiten, die sich jetzt
für ultramoderne, flexible und effiziente
Arbeitsplätze ergeben, sind enorm und
lassen sich mit einer komplett neu konzipierten Tastatur natürlich viel besser umsetzen.
Am WEY Smart Touch fällt als erstes das
leuchtstarke 10″ Touch-Display auf. Benutzer können einerseits deutlich mehr Informationen darstellen als mit der bisherigen
Tastatur, andererseits aber auch komplexere, auf die Applikation konfigurierte Eingaben tätigen. Die speziell entspiegelte,
kapazitive Multitouch-Oberfläche erkennt

Für Benutzer, die physikalische Tasten einer Touch-Oberfläche vorziehen, stehen
wie bisher flexibel konfigurierbare Funktionstasten sowie zwei Keypads mit individuellen Tasten zur Verfügung. Beim neuen Design hat WEY ebenfalls die Anzahl
der Tasten zur Steuerung der Bildschirme
von sechs auf acht erweitert. Das führt bei
Arbeitsplätzen mit vielen Bildschirmen zu
einer deutlich einfacheren Handhabung.
Ein schneller Auswurfmechanismus entfernt das Tastenfeld von der Gehäuseeinheit und ermöglicht persönliche Tastaturen. Somit können mehrere Anwender bei
Schichtbetrieb am gleichen Arbeitsplatz
arbeiten, aber immer ausschliesslich das
persönliche Tastenfeld verwenden. Eine
ergonomisch geformte Handauflage steigert den Nutzerkomfort.
Die WEY Gruppe hat sich der Förderung
einer sauberen Umwelt und der Entwicklung von Green-IT-Lösungen verpflichtet. Aus diesem Grunde verfügt die WEY
Smart Touch über Helligkeitssensoren,
die die Hintergrundbeleuchtung des Bildschirmes regeln. Spezielle Bewegungssensoren in der Tastatur erfassen die Anwesenheit des Benutzers. Ist der Benutzer
nicht an seinem Arbeitsplatz, kann sich die
Tastatur automatisch in den Ruhezustand
versetzen. Dies gilt so lange, bis der Benutzer an seinen Arbeitsplatz zurückkehrt.
Die WEY Connector Box ist seit langem
die Schnittstelle einer WEY Tastatur um
sich mit der Aussenwelt zu verbinden.
Dieses Interfacekonzept wird im Wesentlichen beibehalten. Die Entwickler haben
aber die neuen Smart Connectors bedeutend einfacher gestaltet und diese können
dank des Euroformat-Aufbaus bequem
in 19″-Chassis montiert werden. Wenn
alle PCs abgesetzt sind, reicht sogar ein
PoE+-fähiger Netzwerkanschluss (Power
over Ethernet) um das WEY Smart Touch
zu verbinden.
Die Entwickler von WEY haben den Funktionsumfang nicht nur beibehalten, sondern um einige bedeutende Merkmale
erweitert:

Smart Touch direkt an die Zuverlässigkeit
und Robustheit des Vorgängermodells

Where the lifeblood of
the economy circulates
T
he lights (almost) never go out in the
LGT trading centre in Bendern, Liechtenstein because 65 employees work
there in two shifts. They make sure that
blood pulses through the veins of the
economy; trading in currency pairs, securities and financial products are core activities demanding constant readiness. If
something does go wrong, it can result in
a heart attack. And that is just as dangerous for the economy as it is for us humans.
Built in 1996, the LGT Financial Service
Center was due for a refresh. For this
reason, the bank decided to refurbish the
facility, create a new spatial concept and
renew the IT infrastructure. LGT was already working with a WEY video switch
system, which due to regular maintenance
and support by WEY, had already been in
successful operation for over 13 years.

Financial institutions require systems that
guarantee the highest levels of continuity and reliability. The WEY Distribution
Platform delivers just that. The distributed
solution, which includes redundant transmission lines connecting the backup trading floor, reduces the risk of downtime to
an absolute minimum. When it comes to
supplying the economy with money, securities and investment products, LGT wants
to leave nothing to chance – a guiding principle which also determined their choice of

without disruption.
In addition to the trading centre in Bendern, LGT also maintains a backup trading floor at another location. In case of an
emergency – a fire alarm or the outbreak
of fire, a power failure or flooding, trading
at LGT continues without a hitch.
Previously, the database for the backup
trading floor had to be updated regularly in
a manual and time consuming procedure.
This was something the bank wanted to
change. WEY was also commissioned
to remote all the workstations away from
the desks and into two geographically
separate system rooms. This creates office space with minimal emissions, maximum security, more room to realise ergonomic working environments, and the
additional benefit of a full free seating
concept. WEY’s solution ensures that the
traders can access all data sources from
any workplace. The bank also wanted to
reduce maintenance expenditures and
minimise costs associated with moves.
With regard to such an essential system,
not only is the trading floor duplicated,
but all systems are deployed redundantly,
reducing the risk of failure to an absolute
minimum. Better safe than sorry! The IT
infrastructure of trading floors is very complex. Diverse systems from multiple vendors converge there: information systems
about prices and exchange rates, the
trading platform itself as well as systems
for clearing and settlements – the actual
delivery of securities – require their own
infrastructure and their own connections.
Acting upon the advice of WEY, LGT built
a provisional trading area. Thus, the new
system could be tested and the employees could familiarise themselves with it
during the transition period. After the restructuring, the LGT took over the new
fully operational Financial Service Center.
In the backup trading floor, traders just periodically log on to their systems to check
service availability. Time consuming updates have been completely eliminated.

Bisher datierte die LGT die Datenbasis
des alten Backup Handels in regelmässigen Abständen manuell und somit zeitaufwändig auf. Das wollte die Bank nicht
mehr. WEY erhielt den Auftrag, sämtliche
Rechner abgesetzt von den Arbeitsplätzen
in geografisch voneinander getrennten
Räumen unterzubringen. So entsteht eine
Arbeitsumgebung mit minimalen Emissionen, maximaler Sicherheit und mehr
Raum zur Gestaltung von ergonomischen
Arbeitsplätzen. Weiterhin sollte im Handelsraum neu freie Sitzplatzwahl gelten.

der die Händler sämtliche Datenquellen
von jedem Arbeitsplatz abrufen können.

gleich unter laufendem Betrieb. Im BackupHandelsraum müssen sich die Händler nur
noch periodisch an den Systemen anmelden, um das System zu testen. Zeitaufwändige Updates entfallen.
Die WEY Distribution Platform zusammen
mit dem ausgeklügelten Redundanzprinzip
bedingt, dass die Händler im Haupt-Handelsraum unter anderem auch auf wichtige
Rechner am Backup-Standort zugreifen –
ohne davon etwas zu merken. Im Krisenfall
können die Händler nahtlos vom Backupstandort weiter arbeiten. Der Handelsbetrieb
der Bank wird somit aufrecht erhalten.
Handelsräume von Banken stellen
sicher, dass Geld, Wertpapiere und
Finanzprodukte zirkulieren – eine unentbehrliche Funktion für die Wirtschaft.
Damit der kontinuierliche Einsatz sichergestellt ist, hat sich die liechtensteinische LGT Financial Services für das
Schweizer System von WEY entschieden.

m Handelszentrum der LGT im liechtensteinischen Bendern geht das Licht (fast)
nie aus, denn die 65 Mitarbeitenden arbeiten in zwei Schichten. Sie sorgen dafür,
dass das Blut in den Adern der Wirtschaft
pulsiert; Währungspaare, Wertpapiere und
Finanzprodukte handeln ist eine Kerntätigkeit; sie verlangt ständige Bereitschaft.
Geht etwas schief, dann droht der Infarkt.
Und der ist für die Wirtschaft genau so gefährlich wie für uns Menschen.
Das Handelszentrum der LGT aus dem
Jahr 1996 war in die Jahre gekommen.
Deshalb entschied sich die Bank, das Financial Service Center zu sanieren und ein
neues Raumkonzept zu schaffen. Bei dieser Gelegenheit wollte sie auch die IT-Infrastruktur erneuern. Die LGT arbeitete bereits
mit einem WEY-Video-Switch-System.
Dieses war über 13 Jahre erfolgreich in Betrieb – Unterhalt und Wartung durch WEY
ermöglichten diesen langjährigen Einsatz.

Where the heart of the
S-Bahn beats
Since November 2013, the S-Bahn
Hamburg monitors and controls its
entire transportation network from its
new Operations and Service Center
(BSZ). The BSZ is located in the Hammerbrook district of Hamburg, and is
based on the WEY Distribution Platform.

magine you need to control 17 local
signal boxes, one mechanical, six electromechanical, eight push button routing,
and two electronic, all from a single po-

sition. The Hamburg S-Bahn controls all
traffic and signals using these diverse
and historically evolved systems. How
can they ensure consistent monitoring
and full control under these circumstances? This is achieved using WEY Distribution Platform technology. One of Hamburg S-Bahn’s main criteria when they
chose WEY was the ability to integrate
the connection, transmission and management of both analogue and digital
video signals without installing additional
software.
Around 80 employees of the BSZ are
responsible for coordinating and troubleshooting every train, every switch point,
and even every one of the 234 display
panels on the passenger platforms. All
operational data concerning the trains
across the entire network converge here,
including information about the stations
as well as the emergency and IT systems.
The train and district scheduling teams
supervise all the ongoing traffic, and intervene with corrective measures in case of
disruptions. Here, the entire network must
be monitored and every second counts.
Decisions need to be made quickly to
minimise negative impacts. Passengers
must be promptly informed of changes.
The BSZ provides access to 84 different
operational systems or data sources and
makes them available at 18 high-tech operator workplaces. The center also benefits from the possibility of free seating, so
that operators can move from one desk
to another as needed. Each workplace is
equipped with up to eight monitors and
one large 50″ overview LCD screen that
is shared between two desks. The MK06
Multifunctional Keyboard is used to con-
trol the whole system and intuitively toggle between data sources and screens.
One big problem that was eliminated by
the WEY solution was the tremendous
heat generated by the computers. WEY
remoted the workstations into a separate,
air conditioned server room. As a result,
ambient noise from PC fans has also been
dramatically reduced. The operators can
now access and display all their required
sources from any workplace in real-time
using WEY switching technology.
Another requirement was to integrate
the facility management system and enhance access control to the BSZ. Today,
when a visitor rings the bell, a live video
image of the entrance area is automatically switched to the display on the MK06
Multifunctional Keyboard. Operators then
communicate with the visitor from their
desks and open the door with a press of
a button.
The paramount advantage of the WEY
solution is that it ensures real-time access to diverse applications for all the
employees in the Operations and Service
Center. Thus, the BSZ in Hammerbrook
has truly become the heart of the Hamburg S-Bahn.

tellen wir uns 17 örtliche Stellwerke vor,
von denen eines mechanisch, sechs
elektromechanisch, acht per Drucktasten und zwei elektronisch betrieben werden. Über dieses historisch gewachsene
System stellt die Hamburger S-Bahn die
Fahrdienstleitung sicher. Wie kann sie aber
unter diesen Umständen eine einheitliche
S-Bahn Hamburg - Central Server Room
Überwachung und Steuerung gewährleisten? Dies gelang auf der Basis der WEYDistribution-Platform-Technologie (WDP).
Eines der wichtigsten Kriterien der Hamburger S-Bahn bei der Wahl von WEY war die
Fähigkeit, die Verbindung, die Übertragung
und die Verwaltung sowohl von analogen
als auch digitalen Videosignalen sicherzustellen; und das alles ohne zusätzliche Softwareinstallationen.
Die rund 80 Mitarbeitenden der Betriebsund Servicezentrale (BSZ) stellen die Koordination und Steuerung für jeden Zug,
jede Weiche und sogar für jede der 234
Anzeigetafeln auf den Bahnsteigen sicher.
Die Daten aller Züge im gesamten Netz
laufen hier zusammen. Das gilt auch für
Informationen über die Stationen und das
Notruf- und Informationssystem. Die Zugsund Bereichsdisposition überwacht den gesamten laufenden Verkehr und ergreift bei
Störungen die notwendigen Massnahmen.
Hier zählt jede Sekunde und es braucht
Übersicht über das ganze Netz. Nur so können die Mitarbeitenden die Entscheidungen
schnell treffen und die negativen Auswirkungen minimieren. Auch die Informationen
an die Fahrgäste müssen schnell fliessen.
Die Betriebs- und Servicezentrale führt 84
unterschiedliche operative Systeme oder
Datenquellen zusammen und macht sie an
18 Hightech-Arbeitsplätzen zugänglich. In
der Zentrale herrscht zudem die Möglichkeit
zur freien Sitzplatzwahl. Jeder Arbeitsplatz
verfügt über acht Monitore. Dazu gehört ein
grosser 50″ LCD Bildschirm zur Übersicht,
der gemeinsam mit einer anderen Arbeitsstation genutzt wird. Die Arbeitsstationen
sind mit der multifunktionalen Tastatur
MK06 ausgerüstet. Diese verwenden die
Mitarbeitenden dazu, das Gesamtsystem
zu bedienen und intuitiv zwischen Datenquellen und Bildschirmen umzuschalten.
Ein wichtiges Problem, das die WEY-Lösung zuverlässig beseitigte, war die enorme
Wärmeentwicklung der PCs. WEY brachte
die Rechner in einem separaten, klimatisierten Serverraum unter. Als Folge ist der
Geräuschpegel durch Lüfter und dergleichen drastisch gesunken. Durch Umschalter können sich die Mitarbeitenden heute
von jedem Arbeitsplatz in Echtzeit, alle benötigten Quellen anzeigen lassen.
Eine weitere Anforderung bestand in der
Integration der Gebäude-ManagementSysteme und der Verbesserung der Zugangskontrolle zum BSZ. Wenn heute
ein Besucher läutet, zeigt das Display der
MK06-Tastatur automatisch ein Bild an. Der
Mitarbeitende kann von seinem Arbeitsplatz aus mit dem Besucher kommunizieren
und per Knopfdruck die Türe öffnen.
Der grosse Vorteil der WEY-Lösung besteht
darin, dass sie allen Mitarbeitenden der Betriebs- und Servicezentrale in Echtzeit den
Zugriff auf das gewachsene System der
verschiedenen technischen Anwendungen
gewährleistet. So ist die Betriebs- und Servicezentrale in Hammerbrook wirklich zum
Herz der Hamburger S-Bahn geworden.

One immediately feels safe when landing in Singapore. And that sense of
security is found everywhere, across
the entire city-state. One element of
security is provided by the AETOS Security Management Command Centre,
equipped with systems from WEY, the
Swiss technology provider.
T
he core of the system is situated at a
central location in Singapore. From its
command centre here, AETOS Security
Management controls the deployment of
its security forces. Previously, employees
marked the presence of security units on
a classic paper wall map of Singapore.
But customer requirements evolve over
time. Rapid-fire missions and complex
circumstances require comprehensive
and swift leadership. This meant that
manual updates to the wall map became
too complicated and error-prone. AETOS
had to replace the static map with a digital
one.
After careful evaluation of multiple providers, AETOS chose the solution from WEY
Technology Singapore. This system uses
the flexibility of the WEY VSS2XM Allo14
cation System to integrate Google Maps
onto the operator screens. The overview
is projected onto a video wall.
But that was not enough: “The system
is temporarily unavailable due to maintenance work.” This message is never
acceptable at AETOS because reliability
must be guaranteed at all times. This is
another benefit of WEY solutions: system
expansions are easy due to the modularity of the architecture. Changes and maintenance work can be executed at any time
and without service interruptions. Thus,
the new solution provides extremely
high system reliability in accordance with
AETOS’ emphasis on security.
It no longer looks like a historical military
command post with little flags stuck on
a wall map in the AETOS control centre.
Four AETOS operators, one supervisor
and one Crisis Management Room have
been outfitted with WEY Multifunctional
Keyboards. Using a keyboard, operators
can switch to and monitor colleagues’
screens whenever necessary. The supervisor can also easily oversee operator
activities and maintain an overview of operations from the comfort of his own desk.
This saves valuable time in the event of
an incident. Furthermore, all data sources
can be accessed from the video wall and
the Crisis Management Room. Security
alerts are also projected directly onto the
video wall, ensuring that all alarms receive the staff’s full attention.
In the AETOS command centre, one
finds monitors and WEY Multifunctional
Keyboards at the operator desks, but no
PCs. The WEY system makes it possible
to remote all the computers to a server
rack in a system room. This frees up considerable legroom underneath the operator desks and significantly reduces heat,
noise and electromagnetic emissions in
the control room working environment.

der Mitarbeitenden im Kontrollraum zu
integrieren. Die Übersicht erscheint auf
einer Videowand.
Das war aber nicht genug: „Aufgrund von
Wartungsarbeiten steht Ihnen das System im Moment nicht zur Verfügung.“ Genau diese Mitteilung darf bei AETOS nicht
erscheinen, denn Sicherheit muss jederzeit gewährleistet sein. Auch das bietet
die WEY-Lösung: Aufgrund der modularen Architektur sind Erweiterungen einfach. Auch Systemänderungen und Wartungsarbeiten können jederzeit und ohne
Dienstunterbrechungen
durchgeführt
werden. Die neue Lösung sorgt somit für
eine extrem hohe Systemzuverlässigkeit,
was den hohen Sicherheitsstandards von
AETOS entspricht.
Heute sieht es im Kontrollraum von
AETOS nicht mehr aus wie in einem historischen Kommandoposten, wo Fähnchen
auf eine Landkarte an der Wand gesetzt
werden. WEY hat vier AETOS-Mitarbeitende, einen Vorgesetzten und einen
Krisenmanagementraum mit multifunktio-
nalen Tastaturen von WEY ausgestattet.
Diese Tastaturen erlauben jedem Benutzer, bei Bedarf zum Bildschirm eines Kollegen zu schalten. Der Vorgesetzte behält
ebenfalls den Überblick über die Aktivitäten seiner Mitarbeitenden und kann von
seinem Schreibtisch aus alle Vorgänge
überwachen. Das spart wertvolle Zeit,
was gerade im Falle einer Sicherheitsstörung wertvoll ist. Darüber hinaus sind alle
Datenquellen auf der Videowand, sowie
im Krisenmanagementraum zugänglich.
Sicherheitsalarme erscheinen ebenfalls
direkt auf der Videowand, so dass die
Aufmerksamkeit aller Mitarbeitenden bei
einem Alarm sicher ist.
Im Kontrollraum von AETOS stehen am
Arbeitsplatz neben den Bildschirmen
nur die multifunktionalen Tastaturen von
WEY, und keine PCs. Das System von
WEY macht es möglich, die Computer
zentral in einem Server-Rack im Systemraum aufzustellen. Dadurch verfügen
die Mitarbeitenden über eine beachtliche
Beinfreiheit. Weiterhin reduziert die Lösung von WEY auch die Temperatur, den
Lärm, sowie die elektromagnetischen
Emissionen in der Arbeitsumgebung des
Kontrollraums deutlich.
Sicherheit, die Schweiz und Singapur.

Where biology meets
technology
The Public Water Authority of the City
of Zurich relies on the sensitive water
flea to immediately detect any deterioration in the quality of drinking water.
Should the fleas change their behaviour, a specialised computer program
sends an alarm to the control centre.
There, the large video wall delivered
by WEY is the basic apparatus used to
coordinate and control the next steps.

he scientifically most advanced solutions are not always the best. For
example, the presence of heavy metals
or neurotoxins in water immediately affects the behaviour of water fleas. Chemical analysis of the water supply is much
more complex and time-consuming. So
the Public Water Authority of the City of
Zurich relies on little crustaceans which
are captured in small glass chambers
submerged in a stream of drinking water.
A digital camera observes the water fleas’
behaviour, and a computer program records all their movements. These tiny animals modify their movements if poison is
present in the water. Then the computer
sends an alarm to the control

Control room operators process all faults
and incidents in a 24-hour operation; they
monitor and control all the facilities, such
as the 1500 km water pipeline network. In
addition to the management of water intakes and the distribution network, one of
the most important operator tasks is the
assurance of the water supply following
service disruptions. Of course, disruptions are not always caused by water pollution which is so reliably detected by the
little water fleas. Burst pipes, for example,
are a typically recurring problem.
The original visual representation of the
network was based upon a mosaic panel
solution. But the Public Water Authority
of Zurich needed a video wall which was
easier to use and more flexible in its support of the dispatchers. The project was
awarded to WEY in a public tender process, and the installation was carried out
during ongoing operations without disruption.
The new and generously proportioned
video wall is based upon rear-projection
technology from eyevis. Eyevis is a leading international provider of demanding
visualisation solutions. WEY exclusively
represents eyevis in Switzerland and is
responsible for planning, project management, installation and maintenence.
The new video wall system combines
outstanding design with superior picture
quality. It consists of 16x 50″ EC-50-LXT
rear projections cubes. The display modules are practically seamless and can
be implemented to realise flexible video
walls of virtually any size. The result is
high resolution images of superb quality,
even when projecting static content in a
24-hour operational environment. The
eyevis EC-50-LXT cubes are among the
first in the world based upon innovative
LED technology. The LEDs display flickerfree pictures that do not tire viewers’ eyes.
Furthermore, they are very durable and
low maintenance. WEY has complemented the solution with additional systems.
The WEY Central Interface Controller, for
example, automatically projects images
arising from event-driven alarms on to
the large screen display. This simplifies
the monitoring of all the systems. Using
a graphic controller, the dispatchers can
directly control the video wall from the
convenience of any workplace.
The WEY solution for the Public Water
Authority of Zurich has deliberately been
designed to quickly and easily integrate
new requirements and functions. Being
able to integrate water fleas into a modern
video wall system demonstrates the flexibility of an open and versatile solution.

neben der Stadt Zürich weitere 67
Gemeinden in der Region mit Trinkwasser und deckt damit nahezu 5%
des gesamten Wasserbedarfs der
Schweiz ab.

sofort mit Verhaltensänderungen, wenn
das Wasser plötzlich Schwermetalle oder
Nervengifte enthält. Mit chemischen Analysen ist das aufwändiger. Und es dauert.
Deshalb setzt die Wasserversorgung der
Stadt Zürich auf die kleinen Krebschen.
Sie hat diese in kleine Glasgefässe eingeschlossen, durch die Trinkwasser strömt.
Eine Digitalkamera, die auf die Gläser
gerichtet ist, verfolgt das Verhalten der
Krebse. Ein Computerprogramm zeichnet dann alle Bewegungen auf. Wenn Gift
im Wasser ist, ändern die Tiere ihr Verhalten. Dann schickt der Computer einen
Alarm an die Zentrale und die Disponenten stellen die Wasserversorgung gegebenenfalls sofort ein. So kann verhindert
werden, dass verschmutztes Trinkwasser
in die Haushalte gelangt. Ein solcher Entscheid wird von den Verantwortlichen immer selbst gefällt, es gibt bewusst keine
automatischen Abschaltungen.
Bei der Übertragung und Auswertung der
Bewegungen der Wasserflöhe kommt
nun der Schweizer Technologieanbieter
WEY ins Spiel.
Die Disponenten in der Zentralsteuerung
bearbeiten sämtliche Störungsmeldungen. Sie überwachen und steuern hier
im 24-Stunden-Betrieb alle Anlagen wie
zum Beispiel das 1500 km messende Lei-
tungsnetz. Zu den wichtigsten Aufgaben
der Disponenten gehört neben dem Management der Wasserfassung und -verteilung vor allem die Versorgungssicherung bei Störungen. Dabei muss es sich
nicht zwangsläufig um verschmutztes
Wasser handeln, welches die Wasserflöhe zuverlässig anzeigen. Es kommt auch
immer wieder zu Rohrbrüchen.
Ursprünglich funktionierte die Zentralsteuerung mit einer Blindschaltbild-Lösung.
Nun wünschte die Wasserversorgung
der Stadt Zürich eine Grossbildanzeige,
welche die Disponenten in ihrer Arbeit flexibel unterstützt und gleichzeitig einfach
zu bedienen ist. Im Rahmen einer öffentlichen Ausschreibung überzeugte WEY
und installierte das neue System unter
laufendem Betrieb.
Dabei handelt es sich um eine grosszügige Grossbildanzeige, die auf der
Rückprojektionstechnologie von eyevis
basiert. Eyevis ist ein international führender Anbieter von anspruchsvollen
Visualisierungslösungen. WEY vertritt
eyevis exklusiv in der Schweiz und führt
die Planung, das Projektmanagement,
die Installationen und den Unterhalt aus.
Das neue Videowall-System der Wasserversorgung der Stadt Zürich verbindet hervorragendes Design mit höchster
Bildqualität. Es besteht aus 16x 50″ EC-

Controller werden zum Beispiel automatisch Bilder bestimmter Ereignisse auf
die Grossbildanzeige geschaltet. Dies
vereinfacht die Überwachung der Systeme. Die Disponenten können die Grossbildanzeige von ihrem Arbeitsplatz über
einen Grafik-Controller ansteuern.
Die Lösung von WEY für die Wasserversorgung der Stadt Zürich ist so konzipiert,
dass sich neue Anforderungen und Funktionen schnell und mit wenig Aufwand
einbinden lassen. Wenn sich Wasserflöhe in eine moderne Grossbildanzeige
einbinden lassen, dann kann man mit Fug
und Recht von einer offenen, vielseitig
einsetzbaren Lösung sprechen.

n abundance of customers and partners gathered at the WEY location
in Unterengstringen near Zurich for an
Open House event. Employees treated the
visitors to tours of the facility, including a
behind-the-scenes look at the Production
and Development departments, and live
demonstrations of trading floor and control room technology in the grand 400m2
showroom. One of the day’s highlights
was the presentation of the prototype of
the upcoming WEY Smart Touch multifunctional keyboard, with ground-breaking
new features as described on pages eight
and nine.
No one went hungry that day, as culinary
delicacies were presented by a fabulous
special events caterer. Managing Direc20
tors Armin Klingler and Mario Okle offered
pieces of a delicious custom-made cake,
which was baked to look like a scene from
the WEY Distribution Platform animation.
Festivities continued at the elegant Hotel Belvoir in Rüschlikon, perched atop

‘heavy’ systems to a Cloud-like solution, so

Virtualisation
In large corporations, the increasingly powerful PC has become overkill for many user
tasks. Virtualisation can achieve massive
efficiencies and resource optimisation by
running multiple copies of applications, and
later multiple copies of PCs running those
applications on a server.

Cloud Computing provides the environment
for running applications on hardware that is
accessible from anywhere, and is perfect for
everything that can run in a virtual environment. But it makes the task of supporting
equipment and applications that cannot be
moved to the cloud (e.g. CPU and graphics
intensive programs) an even bigger headache.
Do something: Now it is possible to move
“heavy” applications to a Cloud-like solution
using the WEY Distribution Platform, and
thus achieve the benefits of virtualisation.

view or have dedicated access to physical
hardware over a network connection, with a

‘zero’ client receivers.
Using the WEY UltraFlex Mini PCs you can

die Cloud verschieben lassen?

PCs stehen unter dem Schreibtisch und
Supportmitarbeiter sind vor Ort, die die Anwender unterstützen und sich um anstehende Änderungen kümmern. Dies scheint der
einfachste und sicherste Weg zu sein, aber

WEY betrachtet Kundengeräte immer als

Einsatz, wobei bis zu acht i7-Computer in
einem 19″-Gehäuse (3U) montiert werden.
Als Clients an den Arbeitsplätzen setzt
WEY „Zero“-Empfänger ein.

auch eine hybride Thin- und Fat Client-Lösung nutzen. Die UltraFlex Mini PCs können
