Das Egon Schiele Museum in Tulln stellt anlässlich des Gedenkjahres 2014 das Frühwerk
Egon Schieles dem finalen Schaffen der Zeit
des Ersten Weltkriegs gegenüber. Dadurch
werden zentrale Aspekte im Lebenswerk des
Ausnahmekünstlers beleuchtet. Einmal stehen
all jene Frauen im Zentrum, die sein Leben geprägt haben: Schieles Mutter und Schwestern,
Margarete Partonek als erste große Liebe des
16-jährigen Künstlers und schließlich seine
langjährigen Beziehungen, die Geliebte „Wally“
Neuzil und seine Ehefrau Edith Harms.
For the commemorative year 2014, the Egon
Schiele Museum in Tulln has launched an exhibition that juxtaposes Egon Schiele’s early
work with the mature art he created during
World War I. The show, thus, shines a light
on key themes in the life and work of this
exceptional artist. For once, all the women
that shaped his life are center stage: Schiele’s
mother and sisters; Margarete Partonek, the
first great love of the sixteen-year-old artist;
and, finally, his relationships of many years
with his lover “Wally” Neuzil and his wife Edith Harms.
Auch künstlerisch schließt die Ausstellung einen Kreis, indem gezeigt wird, wie sehr Schiele
am Ende seines Schaffens zum akademisch
The works this exhibition brings together also
trace a circular development. They show how,

geprägten Stil der Jugendzeit zurückfindet.
Auch vieles andere ist bereits am Anfang angelegt. Früh sichtbar ist etwa die Neugierde des
jungen Schiele auf den technischen Fortschritt
und damit einhergehend sein konstruktives
Verständnis der Welt. Auch die für ihn typischen Draufsichten, Doppelungen, Darstellungen der Hände und Rückenansichten sind bereits im Frühwerk verankert.
Die Kriegsjahre bedeuten für Schiele privat eine
bürgerliche Lebensphase. Am 17. Juni 1915 heiratet Egon Schiele Edith Harms. Bevor sie in die
Hochzeit einwilligt, besteht sie auf einer sofortigen Trennung Egons von seiner langjährigen
Freundin „Wally“ Neuzil. Sein Schaffen wird
am Ende dieser Periode international gefeiert,
sodass sein tragischer Tod an der Schwelle zu
einer großartigen Karriere erfolgt.

Im März widmet die Wiener Secession in ihrer 49. Ausstellung Schiele den Hauptsaal. Am
19. Oktober erkrankt Edith Schiele – im sechsten
Monat schwanger – an der Spanischen Grippe.

at the end of his creative journey, Schiele reconsidered the academically oriented style
of his early years. The ground for many
other elements of his art was laid in its early
stages, as well. Among the qualities that already distinguished Schiele as a boy was his
curiosity about technological progress and
the constructive understanding of the world
associated with it. The top views, doublings,
depictions of hands, and back views typical of
his oeuvre also make their first appearances
in his early work.
The war years brought a middle-class life
style to the Schiele’s private life. On June 17,
1915, Egon Schiele married Edith Harms. She
made one condition before marrying him, insisting he break up with his lover of many
years “Wally” Neuzil. Towards the end of this
stage in his life, Schiele’s art met with international acclaim, so that his tragic death in
1918 swept him away on the cusp of a great
career.
Sie stirbt nur wenige Tage später, am 28. Oktober. Am letzten Tag ihres Lebens entstehen
noch Zeichnungen der geliebten Ehefrau von
der Hand Schieles. Es sind die letzten Werke
des Jahrhundertkünstlers, denn er ist ebenfalls an der Spanischen Grippe erkrankt und
stirbt drei Tage nach Edith (am 31. Oktober
1918) im Alter von nur 28 Jahren. Von 1918
bis 1920 fallen mit (je nach Schätzung) 30
bis 50 Millionen insgesamt mehr Menschen
der Spanischen Grippe zum Opfer, als im
Ersten Weltkrieg gestorben sind.
Das Egon Schiele Museum in Tulln vereint
rund 60 Ölbilder, Aquarelle und Zeichnungen
aus den ersten und letzten Schaffensjahren
des Ausnahmekünstlers. Die Werke werden
aus den zentralen Sammlungen zum Frühwerk Schieles geliehen. Darunter finden sich
die Sammlung Gradisch als letzte Kollektion
im Familienbesitz der Nachfahren Schieles, die
Landessammlungen Niederösterreich und die
Sammlung der Stadt Tulln. Zusätzlich werden
zahlreiche Werke aus bislang verborgenem
Privatbesitz erstmals in Österreich gezeigt.

The Egon Schiele Museum in Tulln is showing some 60 oil paintings, watercolors, and
drawings from the first and last years in the
creative life of this seminal artist. These
works are on loan from the preeminent collections of Schiele’s early work. This includes
the Gradisch Collection, the last of its kind
still owned by members of Schiele’s family,
Landessammlungen Niederösterreich, and
die collection of the town of Tulln. Additionally, numerous privately owned works are
on public display for the first time in Austria.
In March 1918, the 49th Exhibition of the
Vienna Secession dedicated its main hall to
Schiele. On October 19, Edith Schiele, who was
six months pregnant, fell ill with the Spanish
flu. She died only a few days later, on October
28. On the last day of her life, Schiele created
drawings of his beloved wife. These were the
last works of this once-in-a-century artist. He,
too, succumbed to the 1918 flu pandemic and,
three days after Edith had passed away, died
a premature death at the age of 28 on October 31, 1918. Between 1918 and 1920 the flu
pandemic (according to varying estimates)
claimed 30 to 50 million lives, causing a higher death toll than World War I.
