WANN HATTEN SIE ZUM LETZTEN MAL EINE WUT IM BAUCH?
Täglich beim Zeitunglesen. Wenn ich mir anschaue, was wir
mit unserer Erde veranstalten, kann ich nur den Kopf schütteln.
Egal ob Bankensanierung oder Abwrackprämie – würde man nur
einen Bruchteil dieser Gelder in Umweltschutz oder Sozialprogramme stecken, sähe die Welt anders aus.
BESTEHT NOCH HOFFNUNG FÜR UNSEREN PLANETEN UND SEINE
BEWOHNER, EGAL OB ZWEI- ODER VIERBEINER?
Ich bin ein unerschütterlicher Optimist: Die Türe ist noch einen
Spalt offen. Aber gerade durch meine Reisen für die ZDF-Dokumentation «Die letzten Zeugen» sehe ich vor allem für uns
Zweibeiner schwarz. Jeder denkt nur an seine eigene Existenz.
Was danach kommt, ist ihm egal.

Hannes Jaenicke tracks the fate of
endangered animals. SWISS Universe
met the German actor and environmental activist for the following interview in Munich.
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU FELT A REALLY BURNING ANGER
ABOUT SOMETHING?
It happens every day when I read the papers. When I see what we
are doing to our world, the only thing I can do is shake my head. It
doesn’t matter whether it’s bank bailouts or scrapping premiums –
if just a fraction of this money were spent on environmental protection or social programmes, the world would look very different.
IS THERE STILL HOPE FOR OUR PLANET AND ITS INHABITANTS –
REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THEY’VE GOT TWO LEGS OR FOUR?
I’m an incorrigible optimist: the door is still not completely closed.
But travelling around making “Die letzten Zeugen” for ZDF has
convinced me that the outlook for those of us with two legs is pretty bleak. People only worry about their own lives and have no
interest in what’s going to come afterwards.

RÜTTELT WACH. WORUM GEHT’S IN DIESEM UMWELTKRIMI?
Jede der fünf Folgen behandelt eine andere Umweltkatastrophe
mit der dazugehörenden aussterbenden Tierart und was man
dagegen tun kann. Im Pilotfilm ging es um die Vernichtung des
Regenwalds in Borneo und die Ausrottung der Orang-Utans. In
der zweiten Sendung behandeln wir die Polarkappenschmelze
und das Aussterben der Eisbären. Bei der Plünderung und Verschmutzung der Meere stehen dann Haie und Wale im Fokus. Im
Kongo das Thema Gorillas und Bodenschätze, und als Letztes
geht es nochmals um Meeressäuger.

Willie ist eine Heldenfigur für mich, mit unglaublichem Mut. Er
tritt nicht mit einer naiven Gutmenschenhaltung auf, sondern
denkt und handelt ganzheitlich. Abgerodeter Urwald wird in
Rekordtempo unter Einbeziehung der Einheimischen wieder
aufgeforstet, nachhaltig nutzbar gemacht und dient den OrangUtans erneut als sicherer Lebensraum.

WHAT YOU ARE DOING FOR ORANG-UTANS IN BORNEO IS ACTING
AS A WAKE-UP CALL. WHAT’S THIS “ENVIRONMENTAL CRIME
STORY” ACTUALLY ABOUT?
Each one of the documentary’s five parts deals with a different ecological catastrophe, the animals that it’s making extinct and what we
can do to prevent it. The pilot film dealt with the destruction of the
rain forest in Borneo and how the orang-utans are being wiped out
there. The second programme covers the melting of the polar icecaps and how polar bears are dying out. When we report on how the
oceans are being plundered and polluted, we focus on sharks and
whales. In the Congo, the subject is gorillas and mineral resources,
while the final episode is about marine mammals again.
WILLIE SMITS, WHO FOUNDED THE BOS ORGANISATION (BORNEO
ORANGUTAN SURVIVAL FOUNDATION), IS A SHINING EXAMPLE
FOR YOU, ISN’T HE?
Willie is a truly heroic figure for me – incredibly brave. He’s not
some naive do-gooder: he thinks everything through realistically
and acts accordingly. He includes the local population in his projects
for the reforestation of overlogged areas and makes them useable
again in record time so that they form a safe and sustainable habitat for the orang-utans once more.

WHY IS YOUR “DIE LETZTEN ZEUGEN” DOCUMENTARY SO
SUCCESSFUL?
We call the whole series a documentary crime story; it’s full of
rapid cuts and brimming with tension and emotion. We have succeeded in pushing viewers beyond the mere entertainment factor.

Was die Bösartigkeit und die Profitgier des Menschen betrifft,
überrascht mich gar nichts mehr. Warum wir die Szenen der in
Bordellen angebotenen, kahlrasierten Orang-Utan-Weibchen
nicht rausgeschnitten haben? Es gibt für mich kein krasseres
Sinnbild dafür, was der Mensch gerade mit der Natur anstellt.

SHOOTING DOWN ANIMALS BECAUSE THEIR BONES ARE
BELIEVED TO HAVE APHRODISIAC PROPERTIES IN SOME COUNTRIES. HOW DID YOU FEEL AT TIMES LIKE THESE?
People’s viciousness and greed has ceased to astonish me. The reason we screened the scenes in the brothels and didn’t cut out the
female orang-utans shaved bare was because I can’t think of a
more flagrant symbol of what human beings are doing to nature.
WAS KÖNNEN WIR HIER BEI UNS DAGEGEN TUN?
Kein Tropenholz kaufen – die Zertifikate sind zu 90 Prozent
gefälscht. Wäscheständer aufstellen! Die Heizung zwei Grad tiefer stellen – allein in Deutschland könnte man dadurch ein AKW
abschalten. Dusche aus beim Einseifen. Plastikfrei leben. Alle
Geräte ausmachen, die auf Standby laufen. Die Liste der Kleinigkeiten, die wir ohne Aufwand in den eigenen vier Wänden
ändern können, ist endlos lang.
WHAT CAN WE DO HERE TO HELP?
Don’t buy tropical wood – 90 per cent of the certificates are forgeries. Put up clothes horses! Turn the heating down a couple of
degrees – in Germany alone, we could shut down one nuclear
power station. Turn off the shower water when you’re lathering up.
Live without plastic. Switch off appliances instead of leaving them
on stand-by. The list of little things we can change without any
inconvenience within our own four walls is virtually endless.

Sexsklaven in Bordellen. Auf dieses Drama macht die Doku «Die letzten
Zeugen» aufmerksam.
Orang-utans are killed by hunters for their bones, which are believed to have aphrodisiac properties in some countries. Or they are used as sex slaves in brothels. Their dramatic story is revealed in the German TV documentary “Die letzten Zeugen”.
WANN HABEN SIE IHR GRÜNES GEWISSEN ENTDECKT?
Die Greenpeace-Cowboys im Schlauchboot fand ich schon als
Teenager in den 70ern cool. Ich gestalte meinen Haushalt so
ökologisch wie möglich, kaufe in Bioläden, fahre seit zwei
Jahren einen Blue Motion von VW und esse kein Fleisch.
WHEN DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR GREEN CONSCIENCE?
I thought the Greenpeace cowboys in their inflatable dinghy were
pretty cool when I was a teenager in the seventies. I try to be as ecological as I can in my own home and buy organic products. I’ve been
driving a VW Blue Motion for the past two years and I don’t eat meat.

In England und Amerika ist es längst eine Selbstverständlichkeit,
dass sich Leute wie Bono, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Leonardo
DiCaprio oder Emma Thompson für die Umwelt starkmachen.
Hier gibt es eine gewisse Scheu, sich laut zu engagieren. Ich vermute, dass ich damit vielen Leuten auf die Nerven gehe.
YOU DON’T MINCE YOUR WORDS. HAVE YOU NEVER RUN INTO
ANY TROUBLE?
In England and America, it’s quite common for people like Bono,
George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio or Emma Thompson
to campaign for the environment. In Germany, there’s a certain
reticence about making too big a thing of your involvement. I imagine I get on quite a few people’s nerves.
WAS WÜRDEN SIE TUN, WENN SIE EINE MILLION EURO ZU
VERSCHENKEN HÄTTEN?
Es gibt so viele unbekannte grossartige Projekte wie Fair Trade,
Fair Feels Good oder die Christoffel Blindenmission. Für 30 Euro
wird in Afrika ein an Star erkranktes, erblindetes Kind operiert
– der Preis eines bescheidenen Abendessens.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU HAD A MILLION EURO TO
GIVE AWAY?
There are so many wonderful projects that people don’t know
about: like Fair Trade, Fair Feels Good and the Christoffel Blindenmission. A mere 30 euro can pay for an operation to help an African
child suffering from cataracts – that’s the price of a modest dinner.

IHRE SCHAUSPIELKARRIERE IST BEACHTLICH. MACHT ES SPASS,

Ich bin kein Schampus-Fan. Ich besuche die Berlinale oder den
Deutschen Film- beziehungsweise Fernsehpreis, wenn ich nicht
gerade drehe. Ansonsten sind Galas nicht mein Ding.

Ich arbeite wahnsinnig gern mit Maria, wir haben schon 2003 im
Film «So fühlt sich Liebe an» zusammengearbeitet. Die Rolle im
«Tatort» war von vorneherein nur auf drei Folgen angelegt. Der
Spielraum für mich als Liebhaber der Kommissarin war danach
erschöpft.
ANFANG MÄRZ ERSCHIEN IHRE CD «TANGO E POESIA». SIE HANDELT VON LIEBE, SCHMERZ UND LEIDENSCHAFT. HABEN SIE AUCH
EINE ROMANTISCHE, MELANCHOLISCHE SEITE?
Wir wollten eine Lyrik- und Prosa-CD machen, kombiniert mit
argentinischer Tangomusik. Ich bin ein grosser Astor-PiazollaFan, habe über Monate Texte gesucht und eingelesen. Das
Ergebnis kann sich hören lassen.
SIE PENDELN ZWISCHEN BERLIN, MÜNCHEN UND LOS ANGELES.
MACHT IHNEN FLIEGEN SPASS?
Ganz ehrlich: Ich fliege fürs Leben gern. Mit meinem militant
grün gestalteten Haushalt versuche ich, mein schlechtes ökologisches Gewissen als Vielflieger ein wenig zu beruhigen.

IHRE FLUGGEWOHNHEITEN?
Ich liebe Langstreckenflüge, weil ich zehn ungestörte Stunden
für mich habe – eine diskrete Form von Luxus. Ich bin kein
grosser Schläfer, ich lese lieber. Wenn es Filme gibt, die ich noch
nicht kenne, geniesse ich sie mit grösseren Mengen Rotwein. Bei
der SWISS ist der ja auch besonders fein!
YOU COMMUTE BETWEEN BERLIN, MUNICH AND LOS ANGELES.
DO YOU ENJOY FLYING?
To be quite honest, I adore flying. One reason I’ve organised my
household along the militantly green lines I have is to salve my bad
ecological conscience and make up a little for being such a frequent
flier.
WELCHER FLECKEN ERDE STEHT NOCH AUF IHRER
WUNSCHLISTE?
Ich kenne wenig Leute, die so viel gereist sind wie ich. Trotzdem
kenne ich eigentlich noch gar nichts. Was mich noch reizt, ist in
einem Leben nicht mehr zu schaffen: Polynesien, Mikronesien,
Teile von Südamerika – die Liste wäre endlos lang.
WHAT DO YOU NORMALLY DO WHEN YOU FLY?
I love long-haul flights because they give me ten undisturbed hours
to myself – it’s a rather discreet form of luxury. I’m not a great one
for sleep, I prefer to read. If they’re showing a film I haven’t seen,
I’ll sit back and enjoy it with a few glasses of red wine. Which is usually excellent quality whenever I fly SWISS!

I don’t know many people who’ve travelled as much as I have. But
despite that, I really don’t know much at all. What I’d really like to
see is impossible to do in one lifetime: Polynesia, Micronesia, parts
of South America – the list is practically never-ending.

“TANGO E POESIA”. IT’S ABOUT LOVE, PAIN AND PASSION. DO YOU

We wanted to make a CD containing poetry and prose combined
with Argentinian tango music. I’m a great fan of Astor Piazolla; I
spent months looking for texts and recording them. The result really isn’t too bad.
