ULRICH W. HANKE ! More than 250 years ago, Arthur Guinness founded his beer brewery. He closed the lease contract for it for several thousand years, he seemed to be so sure about his success. He should be proven right. The signature of the founder Arthur Guinness is from the logo which was introduced in 1869 (protected as a trademark since 1876) disappeared. What still remains today is the harp and a lettering with the founding date of the Irish beer brewery: “since 1759”. The logo also decorates the Guinness shares. Arthur Guinness’ father was the manager of property for Arthur Price, the archbishop of Cashel and in this office he brewed beer for the workers of the estate. At the age of 27 years, Arthur Guinness received 100 pounds the inheritance of Price. He invested the money into leasing a brewery in Leixlip near Dublin. In 1759, he left this practice for his younger brother and moved directly into Dublin. There he signed a lease contract on December 31st, 1759, for – very far-sighted – 9000 years and a yearly lease of 45 pounds for the St. James’s Gate Brewery, as is passed on. Ten years later, on March 19th, 1769, Guinness exported his beer for the first time – to Great Britain. His best known brew is called Stout, which was originally meant for the strenght of the top-fermented beer, but which changed in the course of time and henceforth meant the depp black colour. In 1799, he completely stopped producing light beer types and concentrated on (strongly hopped) Porter and, as said above, Stout. In 1761, Guinness had already married Olivia Whitmore, who all in all gave him 21 children, but of which only ten reached adult age. They founded the famous Guinness dynasty. Arthur Guinness died in 1803 at the age of 77 years. Finally, in 1932, the Guinness brewery moved into a new headquarter in London. In 1997, it fused with the British conglomerate Grand Metropolitan plc and became a part of the new producer of drinks, called Diageo. Hanke, Hanau O n August 14th it had come thus far: the A-share of the investment holding Berkshire Hathaway – the most expensive piece share of the world – closed with a quote of more than 200,000 dollars for the first time. The share of the former textile company, which was bought by the stock exchange legacy Warren Buffett in 1965, has never been splitted (also see NONVALEUR 5/2013). While other shares were sometimes splitted for example 1:3 or even 1:10 in order to look better optically, Buffett had always been against that. Also, there had never been a dividend since 1967, however there was a big rise in the quote. Finally, Buffett and his partner Charlie Munger introduced the B-shares in 1996 – with a voting power of 1/ 10,000 compared with the A-shares. With the taking over of the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway (BNSF) in 2010 the B-share was splitted and is now affordable for everyone. I have never been allowed to touch an effective piece of an A-share, let alone I have never seen one. Instead I am the proud owner of a Baby-Berkshire share which carries my own name (bought on oneshare.com). So when colleagues from Berlin asked me whether I could help them with picture material, I was at least able to deliver a scan of the B-share. NONVALEUR Nachrichten | News already had the same luck in the beginning of the past month when the German business magazine WirtschaftsWoche asked for pictures. At least a scan of a BASF-share from the time when the chemical company still officially called itself Badische Anilin- & Soda-Fabrik was printed. Even though these steps are small, they are still important to make our hobby more famous. Personally, I would wish for a calendar of a big supraregional newspaper with historical share and bond certificates, like the former one from the German newspaper Handelsblatt. For in conversations I often hear that it was rhis calendar that finally turned knowing people into collectors. However, your magazine about scripophily cannot afford a new edition of such a project, even though there have already been offers for calendar ware. But we would gladly help if any collector or dealer were to attend to the matter. By the way, our own, free encyclopedia, our Wikipedia, NONVALEUR Wiki, prospered due to two or three active authors and is slowly also suited as a work of reference. As is well known, all beginnings are hard. But is has been made! My helpers and I are proud of the new reader numbers. Ever since this magazine is published for free and digitally, the number has risen extremely. Renowned audience magazines may smile upon this, but for our special interest magazine, over 1000 registered readers is quite an enormous number (a lot of them are German-speaking people). I thank you my readers for your trust. But keep recommending us – in particular among English-speaking collectors! Only with more foreign readers we can still publish an English version. für sämtliche Inhalte Yours NONVALEUR Nachrichten | News ® ist eine geschützte Marke uwh ® NONVALEUR NACHRICHTEN | NEWS 6 | 26 ihr magazin yourzu magazine historischen about wertpapieren scripophily | www.nonvaleur-news.com | www.nonvaleur-nachrichten.de interactive LETTERS & CLASSIFIEDS Gratulations for over 1000 readers and thus more than the former Aktiensammler. — uwe gebauer Congratulations. — matthias schmitt Great work... and that for free for the readers... actually shouldn’t work. Finally the two companies united into E.On in June 2000. The subsidiary E.On Energie (E.On Energy) thereby came into existence from the respective supply subsidiares PreussenElektra and Bayernwerk. In July 2000 E.On started a big advertising campaign. After only five weeks, 40 percent of the German population already know the name and the brand E.On. This exceeded the numbers of PreussenElektra and Bayernwerk by more than three or four times the number. Both companies, Veba (Vereinigte Elektrizitäts- und Bergwerks AG; Associated Electricity and Mining Corporation) and Viag (Vereinigte Industrieunternehmungen AG; Associated Industry Enterprises Incorporation), had been founded on the 20ies of the past century as holdings for public industry participation. After the privatisation in the 60ies and 80ies, two successfull conglomerates came into existence which are noted in the Dax. E.On (ADR) H. Klophaus By now, E.On is a pure suppliant of energy. The company liquidated the providers for mobile service Viag Interkom in Germany and One in Austria, the provider of water, Gelsenwasser, and the estate company Viterra. In Eastern Europe, numerous participation on privatised companies for providing energy were purchased at the same time. The conversion was finished in 2005. In 2006, E.On tried to take over the Spanish provider of energy, Endesa, but withdrew from the fight for the takeover in 2007 against the Spanish building company, Acciona, the Catalan rival, Gas Natural, and the Italian state concern, RED Enel. A collection. ULRICH W. HANKE ! F or many collectors the winning bid of 22,000 euros at this year’s 33rd HSK auction in Hamburg for a founding share of the Deutsche Lebens-Versicherungs-Gesellschaft zu Lübeck was only one expensive award amongst many others. For the German collector, hobby-auctioneer and employee of an insurance company, Klaus Schiefer, it was something quite special. Because this award was the highest since Schiefer’s notes on his area of collection, the insurance branch. And the man from Düsseldorf has been watching his branch for quite a long time. Before long he will publish his book about all papers that are known to him, his life’s work: “I have rounded off the manuscript for this book during the past two years, however, it was actually developed over a time span of 25 years”, says Schiefer. The book project was particularly fun for him because some other collectors had supported him. Now it still remains open how he will print his 436 pages. However, the book will be published in a self-publishing company, because his efforts to find a publishing house unfortunately failed. Even though Schiefer had found a good point of time for his publishing, as the working title of the book may already suggest. 250 years of insurance history on shares, it says, the under title says 1765 to 2015, a compendium through the history of the German insurance companies with historical share and bond certificates. Schiefer’s favorite paper is to decorate the book cover (a bond share for the frmation fund of the Feuerversicherungs-Genossenschaft Deutscher Buchdrucker zu Leipzig; see page 14). Some collectors have already been allowed to have a look at his manuscript – like at the Boone auction in Antwerp – and have honored it with a lot of praise for his voluntary work. Schiefer The area of insurance companies has developed in Germany in the run of the years from three different categories of providers, the insuracne companies in form of an incorporation, the public, national institutes or the insurance union on reciprocity. “In 1765 there were the first foundings of insurance incorporation in Hamburg and Berlin” it says in the introduction to the book about the 250 year jubilee of the first providers. In this shape, some papers would also be on the list from companies whose places of emission belonged to Germany in the course of German history, but which are today in other European countries, the author explains. ► The most expensive piece: Deutsche Lebens- Versicherungs-Gesellschaft zu Lübeck The Deutsche Lebens-Versicherungs-Gesellschaft zu Lübeck was founded in 1828 with a capital of 425,000 thalers. The original circulation was at only 425 pieces. In 1918 the company is supposed to have fused with the Mecklenburgische Lebensversicherungs- und Sparbank into the Lübeck-Schweriner Lebensversicherungs-AG. This was followed by the takeover trought the Stuttgarter Verein as Stuttgart-Lübecker-Lebensversicherungs-AG. It served the “grant of a life-long rent when handed in.” 3 ► The youngest piece: AIA AG, Düsseldorf The title of the youngest paper is divided between the share of the Agrippina Versicherungs-AG Köln and the AIA AG, Düsseldorf. Only pieces issued in the US are still younger, ADR (American Depositary Receipt) from the Allianz from 2008 (next page). AIA was founded in 1976 as an independent insurance broker under the name of Architekt-Ingenieur- Assekuranz GmbH and it was changed into an incorporation in 1995. The insurance specialises on the professional risks of architects and engineers. In 2002, the AIA connected itself as a 100 percent subsidiary to the MAF, the biggest European special insurance provider for architects and engineers. From the AIA AG there only exists a specimen share over 10x1000 DM from Septmeber 2005. 5 ► Klaus Schiefer's favorite: Feuerversicherungs- 4 ► The curious paper: Equitable Lebens-Versicherungs- Gesellschaft, New York These specimen are a German paper from an American company – a piece with a rarity factor. Henry Baldwin Hyde (1834– 1899) founded the company in 1859 as Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States (Equitable Lebens-Versicherungs-Gesellschaft der Vereinigten Staaten). In 1905 the provider of insurances (but also rents and other financial instruments) got into trouble, because the heir James Hazen Hyde was imputed with an embezzlement. The defamation was started by E. H. Hariman, Henry Clay Frick, J. P. Morgan and the president of the company, James Waddel Alexander, the book author Schiefer writes. This led to a panic at the New York Wall Street. However, the company survived the turbulences. In 1991, the French AXA finally acuired the majority of the company and changed the name in 2004 into AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company. The company had an office on the Friedrichstraße/Leipzigerstraße in Berlin. The specimen of a bond with a yearly interest of five percent and no other indications as to age or worth, is the only known paper of the company. According to Schiefer’s research, a maximum of only five pieces is supposed to still exist today. Advertisement Genossenschaft Deutscher Buchdrucker zu Leipzig Schiefer especially likes a share of the FeuerversicherungsGenossenschaft Deutscher Buchdrucker zu Leipzig (today: Medien-Versicherung a. G. in Karlsruhe). The company assured mainly printers. The paper illustrated with a statue of Gutenberg combines the printing press and the pressure condition of works for insurance companies (see page 12). Gardena Holding AG Preferred share, 5 DM, Ulm, October 1996 Gardena Holding AG H ow anger turns into delight: The other day, my husband dug up the garden. He wanted a ‘golf lawn, not a field of weeds’. If that was already necessary, why not place an irrigation systems, that was my answer. I had always wanted something like that. To the building market and in the end a system of Gardena in my shopping cart. Gardena isn’t only functional, it has also got an appealing design. This also applies to the share of the specialist for garden equipment which my husband has hanging on his wall in his study. Flowers, leaves and a garden hose with a well-known plugging system decorate the share of the Gardena Holding AG. It was issued on the stock exchange in 1996. However, the company already came into being in 1961 as Kress + Kastner GmbH. Five years later the brand name Gardena was developed. Henceforth the company from Ulm signed with the firm name Gardena Kress + Kastner GmbH. In 1968 it was followed by the introduction of the hose plugging system. Three years after going public, Gardena was sold through the founding families to the Swedish Privat-Equity-Company Industri Kapital Gardena in 1999, followed in 2003 by the delisting of the Gardena shares and the change of name as Gardena AG. One year later, the US subsidiary Melnor Inc. was sold. Finally, in December 2006, Industri Kapital liquidated Gardena for 730 million euros to Husqvarna. The AG was again changed into a GmbH and became a subsidiary of the Swedish producer of motor saws and lawn mowers. The irrigation system is by now placed and grass has grown over it. What remains is the easier way of irrigating the garden – thanks to Gardena. Now I also connect something to this share. From now on exactly 30 years ago, Texaco took over the Getty Empire. It was to become an expensive fusion for Texaco. Responsible was a complaint of the rival Pennzoil. Getty Petroleum Corp. 1 Common stock, April 26, 1990 G. Zetzmann (3), red I n the year 1957, the magazine fortune announced that Jean Paul Getty was the richest man in the world – before the Hunts, Rockefellers, Mellons and Fords. His fortune was estimated at that time at 700 million up to one billion US dollars. Starting with a heritage of 500,000 dollars in 1930, the oil magnate had put in a unique money carrier in the 20th century. He saw the possibilty to form an integrated oil giant during the depression of the early 1930ies. While other investors and business people went under cover, he remained strongly convinced that the American industry would emerge stronger than ever before from the World Economic Crisis. And he would be right. At first he concentrated on getting control over the oil company Pacific Western Oil Co. He took over this firm for a stock rate of three dollars per share, knowing quite well that it’s oil reserves in California only were worth more than dollars per share. In 1932 he had the control. Thereupon he dismissed all employess of the Pacific Western Oil and employed them again for 80 percent of their former wages. Pacific Western Oil Company Specimen, Gold Bond, $ 1000 During the following years he put his efforts into taking over the Tide Water Associated Oil Co. Back then, Tide Water was the ninth biggest oil company of the US with a capital of around 200 million dollars, at a gain of five million dollars in the year 1932, the lowest point in the depression. The shares had fallen for 90 percent and noted at around three dollars. Getty got the necessary 4.5 million dollars by selling oil rights in California to Shell Oil in order to buy Tide Water shares for the unbelievably low price of 2.50 dollars per share. Shell Oil Company Bond 8½ %, Due 2000, $ 1000 In the end of April 1933, Getty held 258,000 pieces in his hands. This gave him a post as director in the company. Meanwhile – in the year 1936 – the Tide Water shares had climbed to 20 dollars and their flight continued. In 1947, Getty founded the holding company Mission Development in order to mostly increase his share of Tide Water. The final fusion of Tide Water with Getty Oil happened in 1966, when Getty controlled 72 percent of Tide Water. Personally, J. Paul Getty owned four million shares of the new company. The increase of the price for mineral oil by te Arabic oil countries from three to twelve dollars per barrel in 1973 respectively increased Getty’s wealth. ► NONVALEUR NACHRICHTEN | NEWS 17 | 26 your magazine about scripophily | www.nonvaleur-news.com market & companies | american vignettes Mission Development Company 100 shares, Jan. 3, 1956 G. Zetzmann (3), gemeinfrei ► At the age of 64 years, Getty changed the name Pacific Western into Getty Oil Company and discovered his heart for supertankers. Here he again showed his ability and his salesmanship. He gave the orders for his supertankers to French shipyards, which were subsidized for 35 percent by the French government and were to be liquidated. The necessary capital of Francs for the building of the ships he got from American movie companies at 70 percent of the nominal par. Thus, the tankers only cost 45.5 percent of the production price for Getty. His smallest tanker, the Ss Veedol (46,000 tons) was already finished in 1955. With his fleet of tankers the smaller ships of his rivals were made incapable of competing. There are also examples for J. Paul Getty’s business sense in the estate market. The Pierre Hotel in New York, a luxury palace, built in 1930 for ten million dollars changed onto Getty’s hands in 1938 for only 2.35 million dollars. He got the estate Sutton Place in Guildford Surrey even cheaper, at a distance of around 40 kilometres from the London city centre. The estate, which also had a park of 60 acres, was built in 1917 with building costs of 120,000 English pounds. The owner, duke of Sutherland assigned the ruler seat to Getty for 50,000 pounds in 1959. When looking at the devaluation of the British pound which happened in the years 1917 until 1959, this procedure is almost unbelievable incomprehensible. After J. Paul Getty had died at the age of 83 years on June 6th, 1976, in his favorite armchair in his working room in Sutton Place, his capital was divided between 26 heirs. The extense of this heritage can be measured on the daily amount of interest which the Sarah C. Getty Trust got for it’s money that it had invested in US short taps in 1985: one million dollar every 24 hours! Getty had already made sure that his nae wouldn’t be forgotten by building a museum in Malibu, California during his lifetime. After his death, the Getty museum received a liquid funds of 1.26 million dollars and thus became by far the richest institute in the world. The museum is bound to spend 54 million dollars a year in the world of art. Gordon P. Getty, the American who led the list of the 400 richest Americans in the Forbes magazine in 1982 is appointed as custodian and caretaker of the Getty Trust by the other heirs. This choice wasn’t really lucky, becaue Gordon developed ambitious plans to take over the management of Getty Oil. The tension which this caused with the directors and the disagreements with the other 25 heirs aren’t good for the firm and turned it into a transfer object. On November 15th, 1983, the president of the firm Pennzoil, J. Hugh Liedke, appears as a potential buyer for Gordon Getty and quickly comes to an agreement with him. Gordon is to be chairman of the supervisory board after the transfer and the free shareholders will receive 110 dollars per share – 20 dollars above the last stock exchange rate. This deal with the rather small oil company Pennzoil Copany is stopped with an interim injunction on omission of further steps. This injunction was requested by J. Paul Getty’s daughters at a court in California. J. Paul Getty The American oil magnate was born on December 15th in 1892 (died on June 6th, 1976). He made himself immortal as a man of art with his J. Paul Getty Museum in 1954. Only in the past year, 1.7 million visitors visited the art museum in California. Getty studied in Berkeley and in Oxford, was the son of rich parents and was able to make a quick career in the oil industry through a heritage. He was married five times. Texaco Inc. Gordon as custodian immediately accepts this offer, because the capital of the Trust is thus increased enormously. The signing of the transfer of Getty Oil through Texaco for 10.1 billion dollars was until then the biggest transaction of this kind in history. Pennzoil of course felt cheated by Texaco and brought an action against the company for unfair hecotring in the planned transfer. No one took this action seriously, but in November 1985, a Texan court convicted Texaco to a payment of 10.5 billion dollars to Pennzoil. Texaco gave notice of appeal. The next Texan instance reduced the sum only for two billion dollars in February 1986. Now Texaco left nothing untried to reach an agreement with pennzoil outside of court. In 1987, ther was a peace treaty. James Kinnear for Texaco and Hugh Leidke for Pennzoil signed identical copies of a contract which planned for Texaco to pay 3 billion dollars per one billion barrels Getty Oil. The costs for the fes of the lawyer Jamails were numbered at 500 million dollars.pennzoil thus hit Texaco so hard that this company went under the protection of chapter 11 of the American bankruptcy right on April 12th, 1987. It was by far the biggest bankruptcy in American history. All because of Getty’ heritage. However, Texaco regained it’s footing thorugh participation sales, before the company went into the Chevron Corporation in 2001. Advertisement Do you like this magazine? HANKE ! For Matthias Morgner his home is decisive for choosing his favorite share. He has been living in Wuppertal, Germany, for 45 years – a city of weavers, tailors and of textile industry. F or Matthias Morgner, who was born in Berlin, his chosen home is Wuppertal. He has been living there for 45 years already. According to Morgner, only a few people know that the textile industry there lived through a boom during the times of the Second Wolrd War. In Wuppertal, the uniforms were produced, particuarly for the paratroopers. It is known: The city was founded on August 1st, 1929, through the union of the cities Elberfeld and Barmen as well as Rosdorf, Cronenberg and Vohwinkel under the name of Barmen-Elberfeld as an urban municipality. It was renamed into Wuppertal in 1930 after an inquiry amongst the citizens, which expresses the geographical place of the city next to the valley of the Wupper. So it is obvious that Morgner’s favorite share comes from Wuppertal. The share of the textile industry AG Wuppertal-Barmen over 20 reichsmarks and with a pretty water mark comes from the year 1936 – so from a time shortly after the renaming of the city. The company was founded in 1916 as Textil-Industrie Barmen. The Samt- und Plüschwerke Niedeck & Co. AG, the Band- und Spitzenfabrik Vogelsang und Zimmermann in Barmen-Wichlinghausen (since 1917) and the Spinnerei M. Lamberts und May AG in Gladbach (since 1920) belonged to it. In 1927 there was a silent liquidation, in which there is an execution with an agreement on both sides of the shareholders – without a termination agreement. Finally, the general x^x^ ecided in 1934 to continue the incorporation as Textil-Industrie AG Wuppertal-Barmen. In 1936, the company issued these new shares.. O n Saturday, 18th of October the 35th HWPH Historisches Wertpapierhaus AG auction takes place in the Erbprinzenpalais in Wiesbaden, Germany. The focus will be once again be on value papers from Russia and other states of the former Sowjet Union, because the pieces from Dr. Helmut Fischer’s collection from which weren’t sold in the 29th and 31st auction, are offered for lower starting prices. However, there are also numerous highlights and unique pieces amongst the papers from the rest of the world. A collection of 40 different papers around the American Express Company (lot 415) stands out particularly. Amongst others, the collection contains the founding share, a paper of the Wells Fargo and Company with a signature from William G. Fargo, as well as numerous papers of American Express as well as of the Merchants Despatch Transportation Company with interesting combinations of signatures. The starting price is set really low with 13,000 euros, if you keep in mind that the founding share alone was called with 6000 euros at FHW in Frankfurt. However, there are also numerous top pieces from Germany in the acution, as for example a founding share of the Hippodrom AG (lot 431, starting bid 7500 euros) from Frankfurt or the founding share of the Gesellschaft für Linde’s Eismaschinen AG (lot 430, 1200 euros) from Wiesbaden. The paper holds Dr. Carl von Linde’s original signature, who was the founder of the firm. It’s the themes that make out stamps. Denise Risse presents postal stamps from the earlier GDR – this time the emblem of the workers-and-farmers-state and it’s history. H ammer and sickle represent work and agriculture as well as communism. The painter Jewgenij Iwanowitsch Kamsolkin (1885–1957) devised the famous symbol for the 1st of May 1918 for a feast decoration in Moscow. A few months later, the 5th Allrussian Sowjet Congress announced the sign to be the new national emblem and thus it was also inserted in the crest of the Sowjet Union and the Union Republics. The former national crest in the GDR with hammer and circle in a garland of corn had the same function: the symbolisation of the workers-and-farmers-state in league with intelligence. The cricle thereby stands for the intelligence as a social layer in the GDR, which means people with a graduate degree and artists. At first this crest was only unofficial. Through a law from September 26th, 1995, it became the valid crest until the turn in 1990. Hammer and circle in a garland of corn really only became an integral part of the national flag with a law of change on October 1st in 1959. In the federal republic and in West-berlin it was at first forbidden to wear or show the crest and it was pursued and punished by the police – only in 1969 the Federal Government changed this practice in the course of the new East politics. In 2004 a businessman from Karlsruhe tried to get the brand rights for this symbol and other GDR symbols. He failed. The symbols can be found on countless stamps from the GDR.
