This rating is based on a 25 year-old “standard female“ weighing 60kg and 1.60m tall. a man is able to sleep comfortably at a somewhat lower temperature. Limit: This rating is the lowest temperature at which a sleeper fully enclosed in their sleeping bag can expect to have a comfortable night’s sleep in a fetal or tightly rolled-up position. This body position must be taken in order minimize the amount of body surface area emitting heat. This rating is based on a 25 year-old “standard male”, weighing 70kg and 1.73m tall. This is a lower limit; a woman may already be at risk for hypothermia at this temperature. 4 Extreme: at this temperature, the sleeping bag offers protection from freezing, however there is risk of hypothermia. it is assumed that a „standard female“ in a tightly rolled-up position can withstand the cold for 6 hours. INFLUENCING FACTORS PHYSICAL most body heat lost in a sleeping bag is due to heat conduction, or heat transfer caused by physical contact to the ground below. The weight of the sleeper compresses the sleeping bag underneath thereby greatly reducing the bag‘s thermal eficiency. a well-insulating ground pad is very important to help reduce this heat loss. Convection: This is the heat loss due to air currents that carry body heat from areas of high temperature to those that are lower. The more room around the body, or space within the bag, the greater this heat exchange. Breathing: in colder temperatures, the body loses heat and moisture through breathing. Radiation is the heat lost to objects in the surrounding environment. wind reinforces this effect. it is therefore best to choose a sleeping area that is protected from wind. Evaporation: The human body sweats in order to regulate body heat. This evaporative cooling process is an effective reaction when your body attempts to cool itself down, yet ineffective if the sweat is not able to evaporate away from your body. if a sleeping bag is not breathable enough, the bag soon becomes wet and uncomfortable. This causes you to feel cold and makes the sleeping bag less effectual in keeping you warm. This is a greater problem in down sleeping bags, which absorb moisture to a higher degree, than in synthetic sleeping bags. 4 VAUDE SCHULUNG 2011 © Copyright VAUDE Sport gmbh & Co. Kg • 01.2011 PHYSIOLOGICAL a sleeping bag cannot produce heat by itself; instead it can only retain the heat generated by the person inside. Therefore thermal sensitivity is greatly affected by a variety of physiological factors: WWW.VAUDE.COM FEEDBACK also produce more heat and do not cool down as quickly. slim people usually consume as many calories as they burn. During strenuous physical activity it becomes dificult for them to consume enough to meet their energy requirements, and therefore they tend to feel the cold faster. metabolic heat output differs from person to person and greatly depends on body weight. a sleeping person weighing 50 kg generates about 60 watts of heat, while a person weighing 110 kg generates about 100 watts (en 13537). The more watts a person can generate, the faster the sleeping bag can be brought to a comfort temperature level for a sound night‘s sleep. Gender. women tend to generally feel cold faster than men. in en 13537, the average comfort value for a standard female is 5º c higher than for a standard male. This is mainly due to a higher natural percentage of body-fat comparted to muscle in women‘s bodies, which afffects their metabolic rate. in bodies with a similar body surface area, the lower the body weight, the less energy is produced. Slim or heavy. people with greater fat reserves have better insulation potential. They also have more fat that can be burnt, generating more energy and heat during strenuous physical activity, so they don‘t become cold as fast. people with greater muscle mass Age. metabolic rates tend to slow down as one becomes older. The lower the metabolic rate, the less body heat a person generates. muscle mass also tends to diminish with age and key energy sources are lost as well. TECHNOLOGY Condition. people that are physically it and often outdoors are less susceptible to cold. in addition, when a person is exhausted their body generates less heat as well. experience. experienced people are better at assessing their comfort temperature, and know how to use clothing and gear to adapt to weather and climate conditions. Energy input and consumption before going to sleep. The amount of energy or warmth generated while you sleep is affected by your day‘s activities and energy input. a backpacker who has had a warm, well-balanced meal is bound to be less susceptible to the cold than a mountain climber who after a long tour has only had a small, cold meal. generally, your energy input should balance out your activity load during the day in order to for you to maintain a stable temperature while sleeping. 5 VAUDE TRAINING 2011 © Copyright VAUDE Sport gmbh & Co. Down can be compared to a snowlake; both are three dimensional, inely branched formations. Down is not a small feather, but rather it is its own type of feathered ilament with a point-like core (see photo). The main difference in the insulation capability is that down grows three dimensionally and feathers only two dimensionally. Due to its three dimensional structure and the ability to recover its structure, down is able to store an enormous amount of air in proportion to its weight. This means nothing more that a down plumule has a much higher insulation capacity than a “normal” feather. we use superior quality european goose down in most of our top end down sleeping bags. This down is collected in poland and carries the eurodown label. This down enjoys an outstanding reputation in terms of its quality, thermal insulation and outstanding loft. VauDe uses only the highest quality down ill for its down sleeping bags. all of our ills are tested for moisture resistance, loft and durability; only after passing this stringent quality testing are they accepted in the VauDe sleeping bag program. VauDe uses only the highest quality down ill for its down sleeping bags. all of our ills are tested for moisture resistance, loft and durability; only after passing this stringent quality testing are they accepted in the VauDe sleeping bag program. To demonstrate: • Every ounce (28.35g) of quality down has about 2 million luffy ilaments that interlock and overlap. • This forms a protective layer of still air that keeps warmth in and cold out. • These can be easily squeezed or compressed owing to their elasticity. • A good shake can restore down to its original form and renew a sleeping bag’s full loft and insulation. 10 DOWN: CHEMICAL TREATMENT we at VauDe believe that a well-made down sleeping bag is an excellent natural product. That is why we have been against the use of any chemical treatment of our down since we irst started manufacturing sleeping bags. on top of this, treatments such as Telon greatly diminish the outstanding natural properties of down and therefore reduce the life of a sleeping bag. DOWN: CHARACTERISTICS Down/feather mix The designation 90/10 and 80/20 represent the ratio of down Fill ratios refer to the percentage of goose down plumes to support feathers in terms of overall ill weight (90/10 oder 80/20). DOWN: LOFT Loft = Fill Power The loft describes, in short, the capacity of the down to store air. The rule of thumb here is: the higher the better. a type of quality barometer for down if you will. loft is generally 10 VAUDE SCHULUNG 2011 © Copyright VAUDE Sport gmbh & Co. Kg • 01.2011 WWW.VAUDE.COM FEEDBACK TECHNOLOGY ECO measured in “cuin” (cubic inches) and indicates the number of cubic inches one ounce of down will occupy. This is an important indicator because the larger this volume is, the more air the down can store and the greater its insulation is. Denier is a sizing system used for continuous textile ilaments. “D” is the unit designation for iber coarseness of textile ibers and yarns. it can be understood as the gram weight of 9000 meters of a single yarn of sewing thread (1D= 1g/9000m). SYNTHETIC FIBERS: CHARACTERISTICS The emergence of synthetic ibers verged on a revolution in the outdoor market. They are especially valued for their minimal water absorption and high resistance to abrasion and detergents. For example: 40D polyamide Ripstop 240T a 9000m yarn of this material weighs 40g. “T” stands for Thread count and is the number of threads per square centimeter of woven fabric. The unique advantage is that they retain their outstanding insulative abilities even when damp or wet, and are therefore an ideal choice when heading out into areas in which condensation can become a problem. For example: 40D polyamide Ripstop 240T 240 threads are woven into one square centimeter of this material. it can generally be stated that: the more threads used per square centimeter, the less chance down feathers have of escaping. DENIER AND THREAD SENSOFIL HIGH LOFT all of our materials come with speciications concerning thread strength and number of threads used. These unit designations are provided in Denier (D) and in Thread count (T). sensoil high loft has a 3-layer construction that offers superior insulation. The ibers are also easy to care for and weigh very little. even when damp it retains its outstanding insula- tive ability and is therefore an ideal choice when heading out into areas in which condensation can become a problem. as the name implies, the sensoil high loft ibers have a greater loft than previous sensoil ibers. a special processing has been applied to make them extremely soft and offer excellent sleeping comfort. The sensoil high loft microibers in the inner iber layer also serve to relect body heat. This radiated body heat is not relected directly back to the body, but instead trapped and stored in the inner iber layer next to the body. The 3-layer construction also ensures that body moisture that may arise is quickly transported outward away from the body. Benefits: • Superior insulation even when wet • Microibers effectively relect body heat • 3-layer design provides eficient moisture management • Higher loft than standard Sensoil ibers 11 VAUDE TRAINING 2011 © Copyright VAUDE Sport gmbh & Co. These sleeping bags feature a zip that be fully opened to turn the bag into a blanket. For many people, a rectangular bag is the most comfortable type because it gives your legs more freedom of movement. The disadvantage is that there’s more air to heat up inside the bag. Therefore, they weigh somewhat more than a comparably warm mummy bag and don’t pack down as small. The comfort-cut mummy bag bears a strong resemblance to a classic mummy bag. The difference is that the comfort-cut bag is wider at the knees and chest, making it noticeably more comfortable. This type of bag unites the higher comfort level of a rectangular bag with the higher thermal rating of a mummy bag. The most familiar type of sleeping bag today – a bit wider at the top and narrower at the feet. mummy bags feature highly eficient heat retention; their contoured shape minimizes the amount of air that needs to be heated. and because they require less material than other types of bags, a mummy bag will weigh much less than a comparably warm rectangular bag. it can also be packed down smaller. Benefits: • Small pack size and less weight • Best thermal retention (depending on type of ill used) When to choose: mummy bags are ideal for cold regions and activities in which weight should be kept to a minimum. 14 Benefits: • The most comfortable shape When to choose: a rectangular bag is especially good for camping and trekking in moderate climates when the extra degree of comfort outweighs the extra weight and size. Benefits: • Effective thermal retention • Comfortable shape When to choose: excellent choice for a large variety of activities including moderate to demanding tours. 14 VAUDE SCHULUNG 2011 © Copyright VAUDE Sport gmbh & Co. Kg • 01.2011 WWW.VAUDE.COM FEEDBACK TECHNOLOGY CHAMBER CONSTRUCTIONS TRAPEZOID BAFFLES SHINGLE CONSTRUCTION H-CHAMBER CONSTRUCTION Trapezoidal bafles are adjacent trapezoid-shaped chambers illed with down and positioned so that their parallel sides are opposite to one another. This is an especially effective construction because it not only distributes the down more evenly throughout the bag and prevents it from shifting, but the alternating angular alignment also prevents cold spots. we use a shingle construction in conjunction with the synthetic iber primaloft® inFiniTy. This is irst cut into rectangular pieces of the correct length. Then these pieces are diagonally sewn between the inner and outer layers of the sleeping bag and attached to the top and bottom of the outer material. This creates shingles that overlap like on the roof of a house or the scales on a ish. This special construction ensures that the insulation layer is evenly distributed and creates optimal heat retention. The sleeping bag ill material can’t slide around in a shingle construction – a big advantage, because when ill moves around cold spots are created in the bag where there is little to no insulation material. of course, you can’t simply ill a sleeping bag with down as if it were a pillow and expect top results in performance and comfort. Do this and the down would shift throughout the sleeping bag, sliding around, collecting in certain areas while thinning out or disappearing completely in others. This would lead to serious cold spots and ineffective insulation, not to mention a loss in comfort. This is why our down sleeping bags rely on a bafle or chamber construction. This construction evenly distributes the down ill with a series of bafles, thereby effectively preventing the down from shifting around in the bag. These can arise in other chamber construction when down clumps together in the chamber corners. The angular bafle design ensures that the down forms a continuous insulation layer in any position, thereby preventing cold spots as well. Benefits: • Minimizes cold spots • Optimizes insulation The simplest construction used is the h chamber construction. 15 VAUDE TRAINING 2011 © Copyright VAUDE Sport gmbh & Co. Kg • 01.2011 WWW.VAUDE.COM FEEDBACK TECHNOLOGY LAYER CONSTRUCTION SUSPENSION SYSTEM FEATURES in a layer construction, 2 layers (or sometimes more) of the ill material are laid on top of each other to create the insulation layer. because this construction on its own isn’t especially eficient, we use it in combination with the suspension system to maximize its thermal insulation potential. The suspension system is a sleeping bag construction made from three different layers. it makes our sleeping bags 10% lighter than comparable synthetic iber ill bags. another key advantage is the eficient heat containment in the second layer’s chamber system optimizes the thermal eficiency of the sleeping bag and offers an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio. THERMAL COLLARS 1 a microiber layer closest to the body relects body heat and prevents heat loss through radiation. 2 a woven construction made from 3D padding stores warm air and increases insulation capacity. 3 The outer layer creates a 3D iber that contains heat by its structure. Benefits: • 10% lighter than comparable sleeping bags • High thermal eficiency 16 The thermal collar’s job is to keep heat from escaping out the top of the bag. Different sleeping bags have differently designed collars, depending on their intended use. in bags designed for “extreme“ use for example, the collar is designed like a vest and cut diagonally which keeps heat loss down to a bare minimum. in our ultralight models on the other hand, we do away with them completely because these bags aren’t designed for cold temperatures and a thermal collar isn’t necessary. some bags have 3D thermal collars (like a neck roll pillow) to both seal the bag against heat loss and to provide optimal support for your head when sleeping. we only use press studs (snaps) on our closures. They allow you to get out of the back quickly and help prevent any feelings of claustrophobia from setting in. Benefits: • Minimizes heat loss • Supports head when sleeping (3D shape) 16 VAUDE SCHULUNG 2011 © Copyright VAUDE Sport gmbh & Co. Down’s thermal capability is unsurpassed and is therefore ideal for cold regions and temperatures under 0 ºc. 20 Benefits: • best warmth to weight ratio • Ideal for people with little room in their gear • Ideal ill for cold regions and temperatures under 0 °C due to outstanding insulative properties 20 VAUDE SCHULUNG 2011 © Copyright VAUDE Sport gmbh & Co. Kg • 01.2011 SYNTHETIC FILL synthetic ill is above all robust and low maintenance. it insulates even when damp and dries signiicantly faster than down. This makes it less sensitive to the effects of weather and moisture condensation. synthetic ill’s loft and sleeping comfort isn’t quite as high as that of a down ill. pack size is another point where down ill has an advantage. For activities in humid regions or wet weather when pack size isn’t as important, synthetic ibers are a good alternative to down. TIPS AND TRICKS WWW.VAUDE.COM FEEDBACK Benefits: • Easy maintenance • Insulates even when damp • Ideal for people with allergies HYBRID of course, one can also combine down ill with a synthetic iber ill. The optimal combination is a thin down sleeping bag as an inner layer with a synthetic ill bag as an outer layer. Kg • 01.2011 WWW.VAUDE.COM FEEDBACK STORAGE AWAY FROM HOME AT HOME it’s a good idea to turn your sleeping bag inside out and allow it to lie open and dry while you’re having breakfast or packing up the tent. because: a certain amount of moisture always ends up condensing inside the sleeping bag while you sleep. always store the sleeping bag in a cool, dry place by hanging it up loosely or inside a larger storage sack (for example, an old duvet cover). Do not store it compressed in a stuff sack or under damp conditions as this will damage the insulation. 22 TIPS AND TRICKS if you do end up packing it up while it’s still damp or wet, you should unpack it as soon as possible, such as during your lunch break. Dampness doesn’t affect synthetic bags as much as down, but they still shouldn’t be packed away wet for more than a day or two. 22 VAUDE SCHULUNG 2011 © Copyright VAUDE Sport gmbh & Co. Kg • 01.2011 WWW.VAUDE.COM FEEDBACK MAINTENANCE DRYING WASHING In a dryer: best dried at low temperatures around 30°c, along with two to three tennis balls that help to unclump the insulation and restore its loft. Dry the bag thoroughly and hang up to air out at least a day or two before storing it away. • At 30°C on a delicate cycle with a product for down or synthetic ill (nikwax Down wash or Tech wash) – depending on how dirty the bag is (rule of thumb: wash after about 20 overnights). • Only partially spin dry! • Never use fabric softener! • For bags that weigh more than 1500 grams, check to make sure that the washing machine is large enough. TIPS AND TRICKS Without a dryer: best dried in direct sunlight on a washstand. Turn the sleeping bag often and shake it out to restore its loft. repeat the procedure until the sleeping bag is completely dry. 23 VAUDE TRAINING 2011 © Copyright VAUDE Sport gmbh & Co.
