Experience
Müritz National Park
Müritz National Park
The Mecklenburg Lake District is a special place and the Müritz
National Park is the most natural part of it. Forests, lakes and bogs
form a natural scenario which stimulates our senses. Many people
come to rejoice in this natural beauty.
If man had not cleared the forests and transformed into fields and
pastures, this land would have become overgrown with beech
forests. Alder bog forests grow on periodically wet habitats but no
forests grow on permanent wetlands. If nature will be let nature,
forests arise over centuries and change in its composition to finally become beech forests.
An impression how medieval forests might have looked is given
by the forests around Serrahn. At this stage you will find an
unique forest wilderness. The charm of this hilly woodland with
lakes and bogs is especially revealed during foliation in May and
leaf fall in the late weeks of September until November.
Lakes are the highlight of the Müritz National Park. The twinkling
play of waves and the peace at the waterside are a fascinating attraction to us. Every Lake has its own character. They differ due to
their size, shape and location. Today’s lakes are remains of ancient
rivers or wash-outs from glaciers during the last ice age. Often
only one ice boulder was left behind and washed into the sand.
Giant glaciers would have stamped it into the ground and when
the ice boulder melted a lake would have been created.
Besides forests and lakes, bogs set the picture of the landscape in
the national park. In bogs, the cycle of materials is arbitrary: Carbon and nutrients are stored for centuries, millennia and billions
of years.
The preservative is water. Plants grow every year and assimilate
carbon dioxide from the air as well as nutrients from the soil. If
they fall down and are covered by water, decay is only fragmentary. The remains congregate and produce peat.
Forests, lakes and bogs are habitats of countless lichens, mosses,
fungi, plants and animals.
The Müritz National Park is famous for its great and impressive
bird species. At no other place in Gemany do so many sea eagles,
ospreys and cranes breed as in the Mecklenburg Lake District
and in the Müritz National Park. In autumn, thousands of cranes
gather at the east shore of the Müritz Lake.
There is no season of the year when the play of nature cannot be
seen. The gold of autumn, the play of light and shadows, the silence of the winter or the exciting revitalisation in spring make for
wonderful moments, while summer lures people with a luscious
green, warm air and holidays in this beautiful land.
National parks are nature‘s theatres. They allow us fascinating
insights into the resourceful workshop of nature. It is the constant
cycle of birth and death wherefore no rule applies. They inspire
us, touch us and show us the world from a different point of view.
So get involved in the experience of Müritz National Park!

Entrance Areas
The Müritz National Park can be reached from any direction. A
traffic management system leads from the motorway and federal
roads to the nearest entrance area. Entrance areas are villages and
towns at the edge of the national park. They are equipped with
car parks, information boards and rest facilities. From there you
can start your tour in the Müritz National Park on foot or bicycle.
Many guided tours start from here as well.
In some entrance areas, a National Park Information centre is
based, often with a little exhibition about a certain feature of the
national park. They are usually open from May to October.
