What can I say! For much of the year people have been
telling me that Show Day at Kaipara Flats is a special
day and I really wasn’t sure what to expect.
The day was just an absolute treat but the standout
highlight for me was being the commentator on the
children’s animal leading. This was outside of my
previous experiences and was just a great pleasure.
Congratulations to all the children and mums and dads
that took the time and put the effort into these calves and
lambs and present them on the day.
What a wonderful outcome for the school with a record
fundraising total of over $30,000.00 which reflected the
enormous effort put in by a large number of our parents
and wider community. The generosity and the support of
our community for the school drove home for me the
reasons that Kaipara Flats is such a special school and
such a nurturing caring place. The depth of feeling about
the school and the determination of the community to
maintain this school is staggering, the intergenerational
support and ownership you display of your school is for
me as Principal humbling.
There are so many people, businesses and families to
thank it would be futile for me to try and name here,
however, I must mention our school’s PTA.
Our PTA have worked tirelessly over the last term to put
Show Day together. Thank you all so much for all your
work. Phillipa Wech has just done a wonderful job at coordinating and leading the organisation of everything and
with the added task of guiding a new Principal through
the ordeal she along with many others has sacrificed a
great deal of time and effort. Phillips, the school is
indebted to you and all of your fabulous team, thank you!
With this magnificent result we have almost reached our
“two year” goal for fundraising in “one year” and our new
turf is looking much more achievable, far sooner than we
imagined. I look forward to working with the Board, PTA
and Staff to refine our plans and realise our vision.
The term has started very well with the children returning
to school looking happy and ready to learn. It is terrific to
have a teacher of the quality of Phillippa Innes covering
in Tui, for Tina, while she is on Sabbatical. Welcome to
our staff Phillippa, your positive approach and
effervescent personality is already evident.
We have had the Life Education truck at school this
week, Chris Turner the presenter of this programme is a
very effective educator and I am sure your children will
have benefited from their time with Chris. We have also
got Rodney Cricket in delivering a small ball skills
programme, based around cricket, each Wednesday
with Tui, Takahe and Kea. This will complement our PE
programme.
Our reading club is underway again this term. Last term
four children read from a box of books that they either
chose for themselves or that their teacher had picked
especially for them. They read with an adult every day
for all of Term 3. We tested the children at the start of the
term and then at the end of the term so that we could
have an idea of the progress they had made. With the
combination of their class lessons and Reading Club, all
of the children made great progress. They made gains
of between 8 and 15 months "reading age" over the 10
weeks of the term.
We are very grateful to the parents and community
members who gave up their time to help out with this
programme and this is clear evidence of how our parents
and community coming into our school can help improve
learning outcomes for our children. Thank you Sharon
Peacock, Jeanette Sanderson, Raewyn Parris, Carol
Jones, Cherie Parker, our regular reading buddies with
Cherie Innes and Melissa Nicol providing back up when
one of the regular volunteers couldn't make it.
As we head towards the end of the year our board and
staff will be looking towards and planning for 2016. Our
Start date for 2016 is Tuesday Feb 2nd.
Our Board will be involved in a combined board training
session focused around cultural responsiveness which
will compliment the work we have done in Te Reo this
year. The session will be held at the Bridgehouse Tavern
in Warkworth on Tuesday the 10th of November. This will
also be a networking opportunity with boards from eight
other local schools. We would also like to extend an
invitation to parents or community members who are
considering running for the board next year to attend. If
you are interested please contact me.
