Since 1957, it has not only been preparing the top-level military leaders for their functions in the armed forces, at NATO, the EU and the United Nations. It also hosts a vast variety of seminars, courses and educational events in the domain of advanced and further training and education, both for experienced officers and – as a recent development - also for civilians from Germany and abroad. The students come from almost every part of the world and from a range of different cultures to HamburgBlankenese. This diversity that has been embraced here for decades is the signature feature of the college and has earned it the byname “Little UN”. 8 9 Positioning Integrated solutions for military fleets Cost efficiency for Mil Ops The Officer of the Future Challenging operational demands and declining manpower are forcing air forces all over the world to concentrate on their core function. Against this background, it is reassuring to have the reliable, cost-efficient and flexible technical support of a highly competent partner at one’s disposal, addressing every aspect of the maintenance of special mission aircraft. The officer’s professional profile has changed considerably over the last few years. Operational deployments have increased significantly in number and have become distinctly more diverse and challenging than before 1990. Military leaders, increasingly often assigned to tasks at multinational operational headquarters, not only have to be professionally proficient but also need to have intercultural and social competences. Additionally, they must be able to communicate and to motivate, to deal with conflicts and to reach consensus – and above all; they must be extremely resilient. This means that Lufthansa Technik can cover the full spectrum of support options through to complete life cycle support. The almost 2,000 aircraft worldwide which we support on a daily basis with our integrated services underline this assurance. On top of that, Lufthansa Technik is one of the few companies licensed to operate simultaneously as a maintenance, design and production organization. Our record of successful modifications ranging from cockpit upgrades to the conversion of commercial airliners into multi-purpose transport aircraft, such as the Airbus A310 Multi-Role Transport Tanker (MRTT), bears testimony to this unique competence. • To further develop the students’ practical military expertise • To enhance the students’ intellectual and professional identity • To develop the students into analytically capable “citizens in uniform” who are able to make political, societal, social and ethical judgements and forecasts mrtt_170x218mm_e.indd 1 10 20.12.12 10:23 11 Positioning Resolving Conflicts Worldwide The college pursues a holistic approach to education, and is one of the leading institutions of its kind in the world. Innovative approaches are used in the training, which is geared to an international audience and brings the officers of the various services together to study in a joint environment. During the course, there is also a strong focus on potential deployments abroad, where military leaders are faced with very special requirements and must be able to work together with allied armed forces and to influence conflict parties in a deescalating manner. „Mens Agitat Molem“ – The Mind Moves the Matter This motto of the college underscores its aspiration to develop new ideas and approaches in its role as an innovation and idea factory. 12 13 Positioning protecting your assets lock on to MBDA solutions Lifelong Learning Most Bundeswehr officers pursue academic studies and graduate from one of the two Bundeswehr universities in Hamburg and Munich at the beginning of their career. Training at the Führungsakademie builds on these studies and further develops the skills and capabilities the students have acquired. With a new module system, the college pursues the approach of “lifelong learning”, i.e. of continuous training and advanced training up to and beyond the age of 40. Today, more than ever, it is a top priority to ensure that the leaders in the Bundeswehr base their judgements, decisions and actions on a clear set of values. The Staff Officer Staff officers make up a group of ranks within the officers’ career structure. They comprise the ranks of Major, Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel, or Lieutenant Commander, Commander and Navy Captain in the Navy. They are designated accordingly because they are often employed as staff members in a planning and advisory function. 20 21 Staff Officer Training The Staff Officer Training All regular line officers as well as selected Bundeswehr medical service officers – totaling up to 600 personnel per year – attend the ten-week staff officer course after their eighth year of service. Training essentially addresses topics such as the interaction between nations and/or between forms of society or different approaches to leadership in armed forces. Questions concerning the officer’s professional identity and “Innere Führung” or “Leadership Development and Civic Education” are also discussed. The objective of training is to enable the officers to get a deeper insight into the societal aspects of the military and to prepare them for their first assignment as staff officers. Graduation from the course is a prerequisite for subsequent promotion to the rank of major or lieutenant commander. As such, this is the only examination-based course that takes place at the Führungsakademie. Content of the Staff Officer Course • F undamentals of Social Sciences and Security Policy • C apabilities and Contributions of the Individual Services to Combined Operations • Decision-making Processes at the National Level • Principles of Leadership and Management Theory 23 Staff Officer Training The Junior Staff Officer Course About 85 percent of the career officers attend the Junior Staff Officer Course two years after the staff officer course. It comprises 14 days of training and prepares for functions at national headquarters, command authorities and in agencies, and is designed to continue the officers‘ education in the domains of security policy and social sciences while further developing their leadership and management competence. Training primarily applies activating methods of adult education such as guided work in small Content of the Junior Staff Officer Course • General Leadership Behaviour • The Decision-making Process and Requirements to be met by the Officer in a Staff • “Innere Führung” (Leadership Development and Civic Education) • Further Study of Social Sciences and Security Policy Issues • Capabilities of Armed Forces groups or intensive, practical action training. 24 25 General | Admiral Staff Officer Training A Top-level Product for Top-level Personnel The National General | Admiral Staff Officer Course During this 24-month course, army, air force, navy, joint support service and medical service officers are jointly prepared for their future functions. Today military operations can only be conducted successfully if all parties involved act jointly. The General Staff Service At higher military headquarters general staff officers assist the commander. They provide a network for security on prominent posts at the UN, at NATO or the EU, in ministries, at colleges and schools, at civilian institutes and/or as military attachés. 26 27 General | Admiral Staff Officer Training Jointly International About 15 percent of each year’s officer intake qualifies to attend this course, the “top-level product” of the Führungsakademie. Together with approximately 80 German officers, some 30 foreign officers from NATO and EU member nations are trained on this course. Taking two years, it has the longest duration of all Bundeswehr courses. Wir bewegen Menschen mit Engagement. Wir bewegen Menschen mit Engagement. Consequently, the curriculum comprises not only military topics but also presentations and seminars on socio-political or economic issues, with great importance being attached to interconnecting all sub-aspects to improve the students’ understanding of the development and complexity of international crises. 30 31 General | Admiral Staff Officer Training Schutzimpfung für das IT-System BWI – Strategischer Partner der Bundeswehr International General / Admiral Staff Officer Course This course focuses on foreign officers from nations that do not belong to NATO or the European Union.
