Castle Oranienstein
Castle Oranienstein was built between 1672 and 1684 by Albertine Agnes, Princess of Nassau-Diez, born
Princess of Orange, on the ruins of the convent „Dierstein“ which had been destroyed during the
Thirty Years War. The fortress was used as residence of the ancestors of the Netherlandish Queen.
In 1696 Princess Amalie of Anhalt-Dessau, Albertine´s daughter-in-law, started rebuilding Oranienstein into a baroque castle.
According to the plans of the French architect Daniel Marot the Italians Eugenio Castelli and Antonio Genone made those
wondeful stucco-works on the walls and under the ceiling which were painted by the Flemish artist Jan van Dyk.
In 1811, Napoleon sold all furniture and paintings of Castle Oranienstein, because Prince William VI, the expelled
Heriditarovenor of the United Netherlands, had refused to enter Napoleon´s League of the Rhine. The Prince lost his castle and
the entire pricipality. Oranienstein became the summer residence and hunting-lodge of the Duke of Nassau-Weilburg-Usingen
who later became Grand Duke of Luxemburg.
Between 1867 and 1919 Oranienstein was a Royal Prussian Cadet School. After the First World War this school was closed and
the building was occupted by the French army.
In 1929 after having been renovated the castle accomodated the municipal museum of the city of Diez. as well as several schools.
The National Socialists ran a boarding school in the building between 1934 to 1945.
After the Second World War Oranienstein was again occupied, first by American and then by French troops. Then the castle
was transferred into the property of the newly founded Land Rheinland-Pfalz which was not in a position to finance the
necessary costs of repair.
The Federal Republic of Germany had the Palace renovated and in May 1962 the 5th Armoured Division took over the castle
and made it ist headquaters until March 1994. Today the 34th Armoured Brigade and the
Supply Batallio 310 have their headquaters in Oranienstein.

Castle Schaumburg
The beautiful old castle Schaumburg, which reminds many
of the old castles in Scotland or Ireland, is located directly
above the town of Balduinstein. It greets the visitor from far
away, by rising from a saturated wooded setting fantastic
surroundings.
The underlying Balduinstein is known for its fine dining,
picturesque embankment of the river Lahn and its beautiful
location surrounded by nature. With hotels, the hostel in

Castle Ardeck
Ardeck is a late medieval castle near the settlement of Holzheim in the
Rhein-Lahn-Kreis in Rhineland-Platinate. The ruins of the hilltop castle are
easiely walkable.

Their first mention is found in a chronicle of Tilemann Elhen Wolf Hagen
from 1395th Presumably, the relatively small castle was originally a border
fortification against Katzenelnbogen. Count Adolf of Nassau-DillenburgDiez seemed to be the builder.
From 1467 the castle was the headquarters of the family of Dietrich von
Diez, who received the castle in that year by the Lords of the County of
Diez as a fiefdom.
After the family became extinct in 1727, the castle was not inhabited and
fell apart. Already in records from 1740 it is referred as laps altogether.
The ruin is now owned by the municipality of Holzheim.

Nicolaus-August-Otto
Museum
His birthplace is now located in the basement of the
museum and Nicolaus August Otto, the first floor the
local authority. Owner of the building is the church of
Holzhausen.
The exhibits are the property of AG KHD (KlöcknerHumboldt-Deutz AG). The exhibiton showcases over 20
engines in various sizes and designs from the
production of Deutz. The exhibiton also documents the
life of N.A.Otto, and the engine manufacturer Deutz.

Limburger Dom
The Catholic Cathedral of Limburg, also known as Georgsdom or
Limburger Dom in german after its dedication to Saint George, is

Herthasee Holzappel
The Herthasee is a lake nearby a small village called Holzappel.
It was synthesized in 1846 from a mine company. The lake is
surrounded with trees where the visitors can relax from swimming.

Boating on the Lahn
Have always heard the Lahn of the most beautiful and most
popular hiking rivers in Germany. Their originality in the upper part
is at least as attractive as the many historic castles and fortresses in the lower river

Fortress
Ehrenbreitstein
Since the 11th century there has been a castle of the Electorate of Trier on the
Ehrenbreitstein, extended to a fortress in the 17th and 18th century. This bastion
withstood even the attack of the French troops and only in 1799 after one year's
siege – it had to capitulate because of hunger. Between 1817 and 1828 the Prussians
rebuilt the fortress and turned it into one of the most powerful military constructions
of Europe.
It called the turned-into-stone "Guard at the Rhine".
Today the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is easily conquered by foot or chair lift.
How the soldiers lived here once and which functions the individual attachments had
is clearly demonstrated during the guided tour.
Those interested in technology or economic history, get their money’s worth in the
State Museum.
A highlight is the terrace of one of the two fortress restaurants when the weather is
fine. Here you can indulge to your heart's content and enjoy the
marvellous view of Koblenz, "Deutsches Eck", Rhine and
"Moselle", "Hunsrück", "Eifel" and "Westerwald".

Castle Stolzenfels
Stolzenfels Castle is a castle near Koblenz on the Rhine,
Germany.Finished in 1259, Stolzenfels was used to protect the toll station
at the Rhine, where the ships, back then were the main transport for
goods, had to stop and pay toll. Over the years it was extended several
times, occupied by French and Swedish troops in the Thirty Year's War
and finally, in 1689, destroyed by the French during the Nine Year's War.
For 150 years the ruins decayed, until in 1815 they were given as a
present to Frederick William IV of Prussia by the city of Koblenz. Following
the romantic traditions, the prince started to completely rebuild the castle
after 1826 as a summer residence. Supported by famous neoclassic
architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel the castle was completely remodeled in
the then fashionable neo-Gothic style, aiming to create a romantic place
representing the idea of medieval knighthood – the architects even created
a tournament site.

Marksburg
Castle
Marksburg Castle is the only hill castle on the Rhine that has never been destroyed. It has been
lived in for over 700 years and thus represents an ever-changing and developing building complex
that has been growing into its present shape over the centuries.
On the Rhine's right bank, upstream from its junction with the Mosel, a hill rises above the town of
Braubach. Crowning the hill is Marksburg Castle, its unusually slender keep towering above the
surrounding courts and ramparts.
Beginning with the construction of the keep in the 12th century, the castle grew into its present
shape throughout succeeding centuries. In the Middle Ages, the strengthening of the castle's
defences bacame essential and urgent by improvements made to firearms. Huge outworks date from
this time, as does the conversion of a gateway in the outer wall to a strong bastion. It is mainly due
to these extra defence works that the castle was never seriously attacked. In more peaceful times, it
was used mainly as a state prison.
Now you can visit the most original castle in the entire valley of the Loreley. This impressive castle,
home of the German Castles Association set up to preserve such ancient monuments, presents a
host of fascinating artefacts that brings the Middle Ages to life.

Loreley
The Loreley is a rock on the eastern bank of the
Rhine near St. Goarshausen, Germany, which
soars some 120 metres above the waterline. It
marks the narrowest part of the river between
Switzerland and the North Sea.A very strong
current and rocks below the waterline have
caused many boat accidents there. Since 1395,
the vineyards of the Counts of katzenelnbogen
have been located here.

Nürburgring
The Nürburgring is a motorsport complex around the
village of Nürburg, Germany.
It features a modern Grand Prix race track built in
1984, and much longer old North loop track which
was built in the 1920s around the village and
medieval castle of Nürburg in the Eifel mountains.
It is located about 70 km (43 mi) south of Cologne;
and 120 km (75 mi) northwest of Frankfurt. The old

The documentation centre NS is an equipment of the city of Cologne. It was
decided in 1987 by the council of the city of Cologne and has since 1988 his

The new Wallraf-Richartz-Museum opened its doors on January 19.
In the new building between City Hall and Gürzenich many exhibits of
medieval, baroque and art pieces of the 19thcentury are housed.
The art works of past eras have now moved fully into the new building, so
that the exhibition at the cathedral now devoted exclusively to
contemporary art from the Ludwig Collection. The new building was

Senckenberg Museum
The Naturmuseum Senckenberg in Frankfurt is the second largest
museum of natural history in Germany. It is particularly popular with
children, who enjoy the extensive collection of dinosaur skeletons:
Senckenberg boasts the largest exhibition of large dinosaurs in Europe.
One particular treasure is a dinosaur fossil with unique, preserved scaled
skin. The museum contains the world's largest and most diverse
collection of stuffed birds with about 2000 specimens. In 2004, almost
400,000 people visited the museum.
