Die Wirtschaft im Mittelpunkt
The City of Kassel and the Kassel District together make up
the Kassel Economic Region. The north Hessian metropolis
of Kassel with its 200,000 inhabitants is the economic and
cultural regional centre for more than 1 million people. The
district, encompassing 1,300 km², is beautifully situated
between the four rivers Diemel, Weser, Fulda and Eder, and is
home to approximately 235,000 residents. Its largest municipalities are Baunatal, Vellmar and Hofgeismar.

Landkreis, der sich auf etwa 1 300 km2 zwischen den vier Flüssen Diemel, Weser,

The location is situated right in the geographic centre of
Germany, and has developed into an important traffic and
transportation hub. The area is easily accessible from all four
directions, either by car on motorways A 7, A 44 and A 49,
the ICE-high-speed railway system of the German railway
company DB or via the Kassel-Calden airport.
Innovative climate
Since the turn of the millennium, the number of companies
in the region has risen by approximately 40 %, to more than
30,000. In addition to international players, the region is also
home to numerous technology and innovation leaders,
Hidden Champions, highly specialised manufacturing businesses and start-ups. In recent rankings, the Kassel economic
region is among the top-ten most dynamic economic locations in Germany.

Die Universität Kassel, Forschungsinstitute sowie Technologie- und Gründerzentren
kooperieren in der Wirtschaftsregion Kassel traditionell sehr eng mit der Wirtschaft.
Gemeinsame Forschung und Entwicklung, aktiver Wissenstransfer und kooperative
Netzwerke bündeln die Stärken und schaffen Synergien. Das Potenzial von 22 000
Studierenden an der Uni Kassel sowie mehr als 100 000 Studierenden im Umkreis

research institutions as well as technology, start-up centres
and the economy has been very close. Joint research and

22,000 students studying at the Kassel University as well as
a total of 100,000 students within a distance of 100 km, at
universities in Göttingen, Paderborn, Marburg and Gießen,

the documenta, the world’s largest exhibition of contemporary art, as well as castle and park Wilhelmshöhe. The park
has recently been accepted into the UNESCO World Heritage

The Kassel Economic Region is located at the intersection of
the most important national roads, and is one of Germany’s
most important railway hubs. Via motorways A 7, 44 and 49,
all major economic centres are just a few hours away. The
GVZ, the freight village located directly next to the motorway
junction Kassel-Süd with its own transshipment station
serves as a perfect interface between road and rail. The ICE
railway station Bahnhof Wilhelmshöhe offers high-speed
connections at short intervals, nearly round the clock, and in
all directions. Modern trams and regio-trams connect travellers with regional destinations.

zwischen Straße und Schiene. Im Schienenreiseverkehr geht es vom ICE-Bahnhof
Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe im kurzen Takt in alle Himmelsrichtungen. Und mit modernen
Trams und RegioTrams ist auch der Nahverkehr vorbildlich ausgebaut.
The driving force behind aviation
Vom neuen Flughafen Kassel-Calden starten und landen seit 2013 Verkehrsflugzeuge ebenso wie Business- und Frachtmaschinen. Die meisten europäischen
Wirtschaftszentren sind in ein bis zwei Flugstunden erreichbar. Die Innenstadt, der
ICE-Bahnhof und das GVZ sind nur ca. 20 Autominuten entfernt.
Since 2013, passenger aircraft, business and cargo planes
have been landing at the new Kassel-Calden Airport. Most
European economic centres are only one or two flight hours
away. From the airport, downtown Kassel, the ICE-railway
station and the GVC may be reached by car, in no more than
20 minutes. An industrial and commercial area for highlyqualified companies, businesses with strong ties to the
aviation industry and providers of corresponding services is
directly adjacent to the airfield.

Typical areas of expertise are mobility, transport technology
and logistics, environmental and energy technology, as well
as tourism, wellness and healthcare. A second focal area is
the IT and communications industry, as well as marketing
– also due to the activities of the Kassel-based Akademie
für Absatzwirtschaft e. V. (AfAK), one of Germany’s first
academies for marketing.

produziert.

role in the area’s economy. Volkswagen AG runs its secondlargest production facility in Baunatal, adjacent to its largest
logistics unit, with together more than 16,000 employees,
making Volkswagen the region’s most important employer.
The second-largest number of people is employed by SMA
Solar Technology AG in Niestetal, a pioneering company in
the field of renewable energy, followed by the MercedesBenz Axle Plant in Kassel.
On the service sector, local settlements include the communication centre of the online-trader OTTO, as well as
the teleshopping market leader QVC Deutschland GmbH.
Wholesalers include companies such as Landefeld Druckluft und Hydraulik GmbH, which provides pneumatic and
hydraulic equipment to customers all over the world, as well
as geo-FENNEL GmbH, which distributes laser measurement
technology and surveying instruments. Another internationally successful product is the power engineering technology
made by Rohloff AG.

Studieren und Probieren
With more than 22,000 students, the University of Kassel is a
pioneer in the fields relating to energy, environment, culture
and society. Its special strengths lie in the technical faculties,
such as electrotechnology, machine engineering and mechatronics, informatics and nanostructure-sciences. In 2013,
the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy honoured the
University of Kassel as a “Founders’ University”.
The university closely cooperates with partners from the
economy, research and social institutions, sets up contacts,
supports hive-offs, product development, patent applications and innovation management. A special department,
UniKassel Transfer, has been set up for strategic planning,
and participation and cooperation management. Affiliated
with this department is GINo mbH, responsible for marketing patents; Science Park Kassel GmbH for the promotion
of hive-offs and innovations, as well as the International
Marketing School (UNIKIMS), which develops its curriculum together with the university and each year trains 500
management trainees and junior executives. A number of
cooperations with other universities and research institutions
follow the same principle.
Die Universität Kassel zählt mit mehr als 22 000 Studierenden zu den Vorreitern auf
den Gebieten Energie, Umwelt, Kultur und Gesellschaft. Besonders stark aufgestellt

facilities and projects, Kassel is a hotspot for thinking and
learning. The exemplary range of institutions dedicated to
research, development and education includes the Bildungszentrum (BZ), the Kassel Chamber of Crafts and Commerce,
the Kassel-Marburg Chamber of Industry and Commerce,
the Technologie- und Gründerzentrum (center for technology
and start-ups) FiDT and more than 20 commercial facilities
and in-company research facilities of local companies.
More than 100 schools have opened their doors, either in
the city or in the district, among them the Swiss International School (SIS), the Club of Rome School and European
Schools, together creating an exceptional educational
network, also attractive to international experts and their

In Kassel and in the District of Kassel, art, culture and entertainment go hand in hand with great residential qualities,

In der Stadt und dem Landkreis Kassel gehen Kunst, Kultur und Unterhaltung Hand

Cultural immersion
Art and culture are of primary importance. The best example
for this attitude is documenta, the largest exhibition of
contemporary art, which every five years draws hundreds of
thousands of visitors from all over the world to Kassel. At
the same time, Kassel enjoys one of the highest densities of
museums in Germany, with collections ranging from the Gallery of Old Masters to the Fridericianum to the Neue Galerie.
A number of theatres, either publicly or alternatively funded,
complement the programme.
There is also a tremendous variety of sights in the area surrounding Kassel: from the Wilhelmsthal rococo castle, the
Wülmersen moated castle and the historical Trendelburg
to locations of the Grimms’ fairy tales, such as Sleeping
Beauty’s Sababurg castle. A lively music scene with lots of
open airs, festivals and tent events will please even the most
discriminating music lover, while a younger crowd from all
over the region parties at numerous clubs.
Natural relaxation
In 2013, the world-famous baroque mountain park Bergpark
Wilhemshöhe with its waterworks was accepted into the
UNESCO-World-Heritage-List. Europe’s largest mountain park is
dominated by a statue of Hercules, the city’ s landmark. Close
to the downtown area, the State Park Karlsaue with the
Orangerie castle is another recreation area, connecting the
bustling shopping area with the serene banks of the Fulda river.
By the way: nearly two thirds of the total urban area of
Kassel is green. No need to go far in order to sit under a
tree, or take a walk in the woods!

Kulturell eintauchen
Kunst und Kultur genießen einen bemerkenswert hohen Stellenwert. Bestes Beispiel
ist die documenta, die weltgrößte temporäre Ausstellung zeitgenössischer Kunst,
die alle fünf Jahre hunderttausende Besucher aus aller Welt anlockt. Kassel weist
zugleich eine der höchsten Museumsdichten Deutschlands auf, von der Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister und der Antikensammlung über das Fridericianum bis zur
Neuen Galerie. Zahlreiche staatliche und alternative Bühnen finden sich ebenfalls.
Eine sagenhafte Vielfalt bietet auch das ganze Umland – vom Rokoko-Schloss
Wilhelmsthal über das Wasserschloss Wülmersen und die historische Trendelburg
bis zu Ausflugszielen auf den Spuren von Grimms Märchen wie dem Dornröschenschloss Sababurg. Die Musikszene wartet mit Open-Airs, Festivals und Kulturzelten
auf. Und auch die studentisch geprägte Subkultur genießt überregionalen Ruf.
Natürlich entspannen
2013 erlangte der Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe weltweite Berühmtheit, als er mit seinen
Wasserspielen in die UNESCO-Welterbeliste aufgenommen wurde. Über Europas
größtem Bergpark thront der Herkules, das Wahrzeichen der Stadt. Direkt beim
Stadtzentrum bildet der Staatspark Karlsaue mit der Orangerie ein weiteres historisch gewachsenes Naherholungsgebiet, das sich bis zum Ufer der Fulda erstreckt.
Fast zwei Drittel der Gesamtfläche Kassels ist übrigens öffentliches Grün. Naturparks, Flüsse, Hügel und Wälder bescheren allerorten höchsten Erholungswert.

In der ganzen Region finden sich Wohnungen, Ein- und Mehrfamilienhäuser oder
auch ehemalige Bauernhöfe und attraktives Bauland. Die abwechslungsreiche
Architektur bezaubert dabei vom schmucken Fachwerkhaus über Jahrhundertwendebauten bis zum modernen Stil auf Niedrigenergieniveau. Dabei sind die
Wohnungsmieten mit durchschnittlich sechs bis acht Euro pro Quadratmeter moderat, auch die Grundstückspreise für Wohnbauland sind – verglichen mit anderen
bundesdeutschen Wirtschaftszentren – noch sehr günstig.
Ausgelassen leben
Schließlich lässt auch das Freizeitangebot in der Erlebnisregion Kassel keine Wünsche offen: Die Gastronomie lädt mit hessischen und internationalen Spezialitäten
zum Schlemmen ein. Deutschlands älteste Fußgängerzone, Flaniermeilen und
Einkaufszentren animieren in ganz Kassel und den umliegenden Fachwerk-Städten
wie Hofgeismar und Wolfhagen zum Shoppen. Vereins- und Alternativsport decken
nahezu alle Disziplinen von Fußball über Golf und Wassersport bis zum Segelfliegen
und Fallschirmspringen ab. Und auch das Nachtleben hat mit den Bars im Vorderen
Westen, dem Szeneviertel rund um den Kulturbahnhof, dem Uni-Quartier in Kassels
Nordstadt sowie mit Clubs und Diskotheken einiges zu bieten.

A marvelous place to live
Those looking for a new home will find a great selection of
flats, one-family or multi-family dwellings, former farms or
attractive lots. The greatly varied architecture ranges from
romantic half-timbered houses to turn-of-the-century mansions to low-energy-standard houses. Rents are reasonable,
ranging from 6 to 8 Euro per square metre. And compared
to other German economic centres, building plots are still
comparatively inexpensive.

And last but not least, fun and recreation are never far away.
A great selection of excellent restaurants offer regional and
international specialities. Germany‘s oldest shopping-mile,
boulevards and malls in Kassel and in quaint, half-timbered
towns such as Hofgeismar and Wolfhagen attract shoppers
from all over. Sports associations and alternative clubs offer
any type of sport one could think of, including soccer, golf,
water sports, gliding and parachuting. And there are lots of
opportunities for going out at night, either to a stylish bar
in the Vorderer-Westen- quarter, trendy clubs in the vicinity
of the Kulturbahnhof, student pubs in the university quarter
and lots of clubs and discotheques.
