Dear Erasmus Officer,
Oxford University Images (OUImages) is offering an internship, for a period of six months, to work
with the image library of the University of Oxford.
The online library launched in November 2013, provides access to a rich array of visual material to
editorial and creative users. Images are supplied by the many different parts of the University:
museums, libraries, colleges and departments, as well as photographers’ archives and Oxford
historical collections. The library is a joint venture between three Administrative departments, and is
located within the Public Affairs Directorate.
The Public Affairs Directorate
This department is responsible for developing public understanding of the University and promoting
effective internal communication in a large and dispersed institutional structure.
The Directorate comprises five teams:
1. Public Affairs Office
2. Press & Information Office
3. Design & Publications Office
4. Digital Communications Office
5. Events Office
These areas coordinate strategic communications, internal communications and government and
community affairs; manage media relations and University news; produce University publications,
including Oxford Today (the University alumni magazine) and the Gazette (the University’s official
journal of record), and run the University’s Design Studio and Image Library; manage the content of
the top levels of the University website (www.ox.ac.uk) and the University’s social media sites; and
manage major University events.

The subject areas I anticipate would be the most applicable to the role are,
Media Studies, Advertising, Marketing and PR, Communication, Media and Cultural Industries,
Applied Communications, Languages, Video/Film and Photographic Arts
Work Description
Interns will report to OUImages Co-ordinator and will work closely the Design and Publications Office
Assistant, as well as other members of the Public Affairs Directorate. The position would be 4.5 days
per week, generally 9 am – 5.30 pm and one day 9 am – 12.30 for 6 months working in a small
friendly team focused on developing the image library and providing images to editorial and creative
buyers.
Key responsibilities

Upload new images into the website

Create accurate captions and metadata.

Undertake administrative duties involved with the planning of photo shoots.

Update and develop the website

Retouch images

Work with the OUImages Coordinator and Design team to create marketing and promotional
material

Work with clients

Attend trade shows

Assist OUImages Coordinator and Department Assistant as required


Creative studio / Junior Designer
To support the day-to-day operation of company

projects. The Junior Designer will work on different accounts
across various sectors; supporting the Senior Designer in
developing the creative projects ensuring that this is all completed
on time.
Main tasks:

Meeting account managers to discuss the business
objectives and requirements of the job.
Interpreting the client's business needs and developing a
concept to suit their purpose.
Estimating the time required to complete the work.
Thinking creatively to produce new ideas and concepts.
Using innovation to redefine a design brief within the
constraints of cost and time.
Presenting finalised ideas and concepts to clients or
account managers.
Working with a wide range of media, including
photography and computer-aided design (CAD).
Proofreading to produce accurate and high-quality work.
Contributing ideas and design artwork to the overall brief.
Demonstrating illustrative skills with rough sketches.
Working on layouts and artworking pages ready for print.
Developing interactive design.
Commissioning illustrators and photographers
Working as part of a team with printers, copywriters,
photographers, stylists, illustrators, other designers,
account executives, web developers and marketing
specialists.
