Close competition
Increasingly newspapers are adopting standardised printing
practices and procedures to ensure the highest quality for their
customers. This year’s International Newspaper Color Quality
Club 2006-2008 competition proved that point.
“All in all, the competition shows an increased quality in
most newspapers, even those that didn’t make the club," says
Frank Dieckhoff, INCQC coordinator at Ifra. “All newspapers are
much closer than they were in years past. This is no doubt a result of the various standardisation efforts of the industry worldwide, and you have to tip your hat to newspapers for taking a
leading role here in something that is not easy – to use a certain
colour specification on all continents to produce very similar,
consistent and high quality results.”
This year's competition, which was jointly organised by
Ifra (www.ifra.com), NAA (www.naa.org) and PANPA
(www.panpa.org.au), drew 181 newspapers from 38 countries.
Although there are 50 titles recognised, there are actually 56
awards to be issued, as some titles qualified by printing at different sites. There are club members from 17 countries, and 17
newspaper titles made it for the first time. At the other end of
the spectrum, there are a number of newspapers that have now
qualified many times. St. Galler Tagblatt, of St. Gallen, Switzerland, continued its incredible run by making the club for a
record seventh time.
As with each INCQC competition, newspapers wanting to
benchmark their printing and reproduction quality on an international scale were evaluated on many aspects of their quality.
But to ensure that the INCQC is not merely a “beauty contest,”
the criteria and judging were even more exhaustive this year,
according to Dieckhoff. In particular, the quality of daily production played a more significant role this time.
Fifty percent of the overall score was based on daily production. In addition to submitting sample copies from their normal production, participants were required to print two test targets, an editorial image and a digital advertisement. In a threestage process, the test targets were measured against a standard
colour gamut, the quality of daily print reproduction was evaluated and the INCQC prints were presented to a 14-member international jury for evaluation.
The new members will be honoured at a special ceremony
during IfraExpo 2006, from 9-12 October in Amsterdam.
And for the first time, not only were the worldwide best
results recognised, but the most successful results from North
America and Asia. These regional winners fell into two categories: Above 100,000 circulation and below 100,000 circulation. The North American awards will be presented at Nexpo, 14 April in Chicago, and the Asian Awards at Ifra’s annual Publish Asia event, 25-26 April in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
One of the many benefits of entering the competition is
the comprehensive evaluation reports that will be provided to
all participants for downloading by 1 May. They will give each
participant a clear indication of how they did, including points
tallied in each category, and where quality can be enhanced.
