Vorsprung: A Communicative Introduction to German Language and Culture (2014),
Enhanced Edition or the 3rd edition by Thomas A. Lovik, J. Douglas Guy, and Monika
Chavez
Course description and objectives
GERM 1020 will provide students with the continued opportunity to improve their German
speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while learning about German-speaking culture.
The class is based on the communicative approach. This means that class time is devoted to
communicative activities (from the book or otherwise designed by the instructor) that develop
and practice language skills, especially speaking skills.
In GERM 1020, we will cover chapters 7 to 12 of the textbook Vorsprung. The book allows
students to practice what they have learned in class. Supplementary material such as videos,
current topical excerpts from newspapers, poems, music, etc. will support the learning
process.
General rules and regulations (* to be added)
§ Assignments must be handed in on time. Please let me know beforehand if you think you
cannot make a deadline. Never miss a class because you have not finished an
assignment; this will not enhance your German language skills.
§ Come to class on time. If you are late you will not only miss information but also distract
your fellow students. If you are late, sneak in unnoticed.
§ Try your best to speak German when you enter the classroom. Learning a new language
is hard, and you will make mistakes as they are part of the learning process.
§ In this class, you will participate in active games, songs, dances, etc. Activities like these
make learning a language and memorizing vocabulary and grammar not only more fun,
but also more successful. Do not be afraid to participate! Everybody will be doing goofy
stuff.
§ Absolutely NO discriminatory remarks about or behavior directed towards a person’s
race, creed, religion, national origin, age, sex, or disability will be tolerated in the
classroom.

Course requirements
attendance/participation (25 %)
Attendance in class is an essential aspect of learning a language. Therefore, you should try
to be present for all class meetings to obtain the best results for your studies. Failure to
attend may have a negative influence on your grade, and will certainly reduce the quality of
your educational experience.
Class discussions are very important. Articulating ideas in class gives you an opportunity to
develop your powers of expression in German. You should make every effort to participate in
class.
Try to speak German as much as possible! Don’t be afraid of making mistakes!
chapter tests (20 %)
We will have six chapter tests, at two-week to three-week intervals. You will not be allowed to
access your notes or files during these tests. But if you are present and attentive during class
and if you do your homework thoroughly, you will do well on the tests and they will help
solidify your language skills.
homework (15 %)
Homework packages are due each Saturday at noon. Please email me your work as a word
document so that I can give you feedback within the document. It is recommended that you
work on your homework package throughout the week, it will help you to review the material
and be prepared for classes. Moreover, you will not reduce your workload to digestible steps
if you do your homework in little packages rather than one big.
The announced packages may be added by additional tasks distributed in class or on
Canvas.
written assignments (15 %)
One written assignment is due for each chapter. You will be given the chance to write a first
draft and revise it on the basis of the instructor’s feedback.
midterm/final exam (15 %)
Midterm: You will have an oral exam. You will know the possible topics in advance, so that
you can prepare. The midterm exams are between Mar 2 and 6.
Final Exam: Your final exam will be a written exam that will include material from the whole
semester. It might be a good idea to keep your notes. You will also have an oral exam in the
same fashion as in the midterm exam. The date for the final exam is: Wed, Apr 29, 1:30pm.
quizzes (10 %)
Infrequent quizzes will cover new vocabulary or an aspect of grammar. These quizzes are to
help you retain information that you learned in class. If you attend class and do the assigned
work, you will do well on these quizzes. We will write quizzes on Canvas. You are allowed to
consult your notes.
extra credit
For extra credit, you may meet with a German tutor (in the Talk Language Laboratory, OM
004, schedule will be made available) and talk in German with them or discuss aspects of
German grammar or culture. Please have the tutor send me an email and confirm the
meeting. You may also attend the German Club, watch a German movie, or read a German
book and write a little essay about the particular movie/book. You can also play a German
song or recite a German poem that is appropriate in class and give a brief introduction to its
theme and central vocabulary. Be creative!
Moreover, you can give a presentation in German of no more than 3-5 minutes about one of
the “Brennpunkt Kultur“ texts in our book. In your presentation, you should summarize the
text and may provide further information that you have researched. I will distribute a list with
the possible themes in the first days of our class and you can sign up.

Academic Integrity/Honor Code Policy
As stated in The Student Code, “Each student has the right and duty to pursue his or her
academic experience free of dishonesty. The Honor System is designed to re-enforce the
higher level of conduct expected and required of all Utah State University students”.
Complete academic honesty is expected in this course. Cheating on exams or plagiarism on
written assignments will result in a failing grade and may result in further action according to
university policy.
USU Students with Disabilities Policy
“Reasonable accommodations will be provided for all persons with disabilities in order to
ensure equal participation within the program. If a student has a disability that will likely
require some accommodations by the instructor, the student must contact the instructor and
document the disability through the Disability Resource Center (797-2444), preferably during
the first week of the course. Any request for special consideration relating to attendance,
pedagogy, taking of examinations, etc., must be discussed with and approved by the
instructor. In cooperation with the Disability Resource Center, course materials can be
provided in alternative format, large print, audio, diskette, or Braille.”
6
Plagiarism
Plagiarism includes knowingly “representing, by paraphrase or direct quotation, the published
or unpublished work of another person as one’s own in any academic exercise or activity
without full and clear acknowledgment. It also includes the unacknowledged used of
materials prepared by another person or agency engaged in the selling of term papers or
other academic materials.” The penalties for plagiarism are severe. They include warning or
reprimand, grade adjustment, probation, suspension, expulsion, withholding of transcripts,
denial or revocation of degrees, and referral to psychological counseling.
Viel Erfolg und Spaß beim Deutschlernen!
