“Moher”, Muel, Moel The origins of São Pedro de Moel go back to the XIII century b. C., when it was used by the Phoenicians as a pathway during their trips. The first references to this village are on the documents related to the territory gifted by the first Portuguese king, D. Afonso Henriques, to Bernard of Clairvaux, a French abbot and the primary builder of the reforming Cistercian religious order of Cister. In this document (dated from 1153) it is mentioned “Moher”. This designation could have become from the Phoenicians times or Moors times, or even derived from the river where there were windmills to mill (“moer” in Portuguese) the cereals. Typical Houses The mixed architecture of S. Pedro de Moel is a special theme to pinpoint. It is possible to distinguish different kinds of architecture, such as the common “Casa Portuguesa” (Portuguese House) of the House-Museum Afonso Lopes Vieira, with its wooden balconies opened to nature and sea, the houses built in the “Modern or International Style”, with their one-plane, or “butterfly-shaped” (convergent planes) roofs and large windows opened to the exterior. Religious, Sportive and Cultural Events The festivities of S. Pedro, the Saint who named the village, are the most important ones at the Religious Level. Regarding to Sports, provided by the sea’s strong tides, there are multiple regional and international Surf and Bodyboard competitions. King’s Pine Forest Throughout 7 centuries, the King’s Pine Forest grew up. Its good management led to great exploitation, making it an important natural resource which triggered the emergence of industries and populations. Climb at the top of the watchtowers and contemplate this wonder, considered the most emblematic Forest of the country, with its wide variety of animals and plants. Enjoy the green land with a revitalizing picnic surrounded by hundreds of pine trees. À frescura e serenidade deste local afluem as gentes no tempo do estio. This is one of the water sources of Moel’s streamlet, at rain season. Next to it, there is a perfect spot to picnics and walks. The existing woodland, introduced by Man, mixes English oak, kermes oak, butcher’s broom, bay laurel, laurustinus, royal fern, among other species. The fauna is presented by the Eurasian jay and the common genet. Snake-like pine trees At the dune cordon, beginning at Praia Velha, the biggest pine tree, whose trunk has several branches outspread on the ground, has an area of 260m2. The high salinity and the action of the maritime winds made them crawl like a snake. Praia da Concha Located at the north side of São Pedro de Moel, after the Lighthouse, the cliffs surrounding it shaped the beach as a seashell, therefore the name Praia da Concha (Seashell Beach). At the rocks persons are angling and hand gathering (catching percebes – gooseneck barnacles). Praia Velha A long stretch of sand where the Moel river runs into the sea and where nature and a festive environment come together on a dynamic beach. Chapel of São Pedro part in his literary compositions. Of note is also the chapel with maritime motifs. At south of the house, a niche with a statue of St. Peter, which is said to have belonged to the village’s first chapel and, having fallen into the sea, it stranded many years later. Bust of Afonso Lopes Vieira On the initiative of the Municipality, in 1961, was inaugurated a bust of Afonso Lopes Vieira, in the square that acquired his name. It was carved by the Professor Joaquim Correia. As the old chapel was demolished because it was unable to accommodate all the faithful and was near collapse, the new one is erected in 1955 by the Churchwardens who were part of the oldest families of the beach. On the invocation of Our Lady of Mercy and St. Peter the Apostle, these images, very old, can still be contemplated. Its modern architecture style was designed by the architect Manuel Raposo with the collaboration of the sculptor Joaquim Correia and painter Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos, who drew the fresco of the altar. Grupo escultórico em memória de D. Dinis e de Santa Isabel Casa-Museu Afonso Lopes Vieira The sculptural piece with the statues of King Dinis and Queen Isabel was placed on the edge of the famous Pine Forest, invoking the royal couple, who had ordered to sow the pines, in the beginning of the 14th century. This piece, designed by the sculptor Numidio Bessone, was inaugurated in October 1972. Watchtowers – Ponto Novo The watchtower of Ponto Novo, 2km from Moel’s streamlet, was built in 1937, a concrete building to detect fires at the forest. With a height of 110 meters, its project was carried out by the forester Mario Amaro dos Santos Gallo. Whoever rises to the top, enjoys a great view over the Pine Forest’s green heart. Lighthouse of Penedo da Saudade The Lighthouse construction began in 1909, because, at the time, there were no other between Peniche and Cabo Mondego. It was inaugurated in 1912. The Lighthouse served not only to navigation support, but also to detect fires in the Pine Forest. It has a height of 51 meters high from sea level to the top of its tower, possessing a spiral staircase of 135 stone steps. The strong beam of light reaches a distance of 41 miles. Watching all around, from the towering cliffs, this impressive building, important touristic and popular symbol, is one of the village jewels. Ar Livre The Streamlet of São Pedro de Moel History of São Pedro de Moel Open Air In 1300 the King D. Dinis gave this region to His wife, Queen Isabel, beginning the sowing of the Pine Forest of Leiria, to anchor the sands that the winds from the coast dragged inland, and, later, to supply wood and pitch to build the ships needed for the Discoveries voyages. During the reign of King D. Fernando (1367-1383) São Pedro de Moel was already an important spot, due to the existence of the river, through which the wood was transported from the Pine Forest to the beach. In 1463, D. Afonso V gave São Pedro de Moel to the Count of Vila Real, D. Pedro de Menezes, who made in this village his own houses. The village belonged to the family until 1641, when the last Marquis of Vila Real and the Duke of Caminha were executed, for their conspiracy towards the King D. João IV. Their possessions were arrested by the Crown. The beauty and serenity of the beach attracted many aristocrats, from the surroundings and even from Lisbon, who passed here their summer. The development of the village increased, mainly, after 1880, with the first road connection between this village and Marinha Grande. In the meantime, as the Royal Power is extinguished, the possessions of S. Pedro de Moel, passed to the National Patrimony and, in 1923, to the jurisdiction of the county of Marinha Grande. Come to breathe the sea breeze, walking or cycling by the “Estrada Atlântica” (Atlantic Road) side by side with the beaches. Dive into the wistful water sea, or into the salted waters of the, almost fiftieth, Oceanic Pool. Looking for adventure? The rough waters will lead you to enjoy some radical waves. Gastronomy At the restaurants of São Pedro de Moel, taste the seafood: white bream, sea bass, gilt-head sea bream, and shellfish like mussels and the unique Spanish and Portuguese percebes (gooseneck barnacles), some species caught by the local fishermen. Beginning at the urban area of Marinha Grande, the Stream of São Pedro flows through the Forest and merge, quietly, with the ocean at the golden sands of Praia Velha. During his watercourse, greatly wooded, it is possible to see different species of animals and plants. Regarding the mammals it is possible to watch the European hedgehog, the fox, the European otter (which eats existing species like the ruivaco, a Lusitanian endemic fish), the squirrel, the wild rabbit, the bats… Relating to the birds there are the Eurasian jay, the common buzzard… As amphibians there are the Iberian newt, the Iberian frog, the fire salamander… The reptiles found here are the Spanish pond turtle, the Carbonell’s wall lizard, the snub-nosed viper, the Iberian emerald lizard… Looking to the plant species it is possible to see some lichens, mosses, trees (maritime pine, wattles, the black alder, oaks, the willow, the Tasmanian blue gum, the black poplar), some of them centenary, conifers (swamp cypress) and at the shrub level, the humidity propitiates the royal fern. At summer time, people are awarded with the freshness and serenity of this spot. The tree’s shadows and royal ferns, the stream’s lethargic murmur and the earth’s perfumes evoke an ancestral landscape, metamorphosing the King’s Pine Forest into a “whispering green cathedral” (Afonso Lopes Vieira) that spreads out towards the Ocean. Penedo da Saudade Legend says that the Counts of Caminha, D. Miguel Luís de Meneses and His wife D. Juliana were a happy couple who lived a very secluded life at their palace, away from the bustle and intrigues of the Court in the year 1641. However, one unfortunate day, the Marquis of Vila Real visited his son and tried to instigate him to join, with a group of persons, into a plot against the tyranny of the King D. João IV. At first, surprised with the proposal, Dom Miguel denied such action. Though, as his father claimed he should not be betrayed by his son, he was obliged to confirm his presence in the plot, witnessing the horrified expression of D. Juliana’s face. Despite the well planned plot, the conspiracy was discovered, and all the conspirators were made prisoners, including the Duke of Caminha, who was imprisoned in the fortress of S. Vicente de Belém. There, he took the decision to write the king, asking for forgiveness, once he had been obliged by his father to commit such crime. The pardon was not granted. The Duchess of Caminha also claimed opposite the King the innocence of her husband, but the King’s decision was irreducible. D. Miguel Meneses went to the gallows and, with his death, paid the loyalty that bound him to his father. Refugee in S. Pedro de Moel, place where she had been so happy with her husband, the young widow, went every day cry their woes in a solitary rock, which people started to call Penedo da Saudade. Some argue that, while listening, at the rock, the sea murmurs, can also distinguish, as in echo, the lamentations of the Duchess of Caminha… This rock is located right in front of the Lighthouse. due to the characteristics of the landscape, and has since benefitted from reclassification activities and has come to play an important role in environmental tourism. Contrasting with the rocky cliffs which surround São Pedro de Moel, there emerges to the North of the settlement, to be precise in Penedo do Cabo, a transition on the sea board where we can observe a beautiful landscape of de dune cordon (to the North) which accommodates a set of habitats stated in annex B-I of Statute Law no.49 enacted on 24/02/2005 which are extremely vulnerable to human impact. During the course of the evolutive history of the earth, in the Lower Jurassic period, the cliffs of São Pedro de Moel emerged, comprising successions of carbonated rocks (made of marly limestone) which correspond to a former shallow marine environment. Regarded as being of major scientific and teaching interest, as regards the age of rocky outcrops and types of fossils present, the cliffs of the region of São Pedro de Moel have the best outcrop of Mesozoic ammonites known in Portugal. Pedras Negras After a vast expanse of sandy beaches running north, the landscape of dunes that stretches south begins on this beach – dark reddish outcrops containing layers of gypsum which were exploited for the production of cement during the Second World War and whose rocky formations are the oldest in the region. House-Museum Afonso Lopes Vieira History Overlooking the beach, is the summerhouse of the poet’s family of Afonso Lopes Vieira (1878 – 1946).It is said that it was built on the ruins of the ancient house of the Marquis of Vila Real, by great gales destroyed and rebuilt by the poet’s grandfather, between 1906 and 1909. On 25/01/1946, the poet dies, and leaves this legacy to the Town Hall of Marinha Grande for use as a summer camp for children of glass workers, foresters and firefighters. In 1947, following the will of her deceased husband, the poet's widow, Mrs. D. Helena Vieira Lopes Aboim gives the property to the Marinha Grande’s jurisdiction, requiring that the chapel, the balcony and the first floor of the house remained unchanged. Equally demands the prohibition of "snacks" to outsiders and other uses diverging to those of which a summer camp for children is bound to. Taken that same year by the Town Hall of Marinha Grande, only in 1949 the summer camp comes into operation, after some adaptations. Museum’s Collection The collection of the House-Museum Afonso Lopes Vieira comprises some of the author's works and documents and some personal items which took Câmara Municipal Marinha Grande Praça Guilherme Stephens 2430 - 522 Marinha Grande 244 573 300 | [email protected]
