With its narrow cobbled streets, simple
white houses, their walls picked out in
touches of bright blue or ochre, and
imposing castle, the medieval walled
town of Óbidos is a fascinating
monument to Portugal's rich and
turbulent past.
Once the wedding gift of D. Afonso II
to his bride D. Urraca, and later of D.
Dinis to D. Santa Isabel, the town has
strong royal connections, and in 1481
D. Afonso married D. Isabel here in the
town's main church of Santa Maria.
