As carnaúbas balançam ao sabor dos ventos do Piauí. “Sinal de ótimas condições para o velejo”, diz o guia Mateus Portela, praticante
de kitesurfe há dez anos. Menos de uma hora de carro até a saída
do Porto dos Tatus, em Parnaíba, a 343 quilômetros de Teresina, e
estamos na fronteira entre a terra e o mar: o mangue. Na companhia de garças e martins-pescadores, seguimos de barco rumo ao
Delta do Parnaíba, no extremo norte do estado.
“Está vendo aquele rio ali na frente? É o Parnaíba, a linha imaginária que separa o Piauí do Maranhão”, explica o guia. O Velho
Monge, como é conhecido pelos nativos, é o segundo maior rio do
Nordeste do país. Nasce na Serra do Jalapão e percorre cerca de
1,7 mil quilômetros até desaguar em mar aberto. No encontro com
o Oceano Atlântico, continua a se dividir em braços, igarapés, ilhas
e ilhotas, formando o único delta marinho da América do Sul e um
dos poucos do mundo.
Durante o percurso, é comum ver pescadores vencendo a
forte correnteza em seus barcos movidos a remo e a vela. Outro
personagem típico da região é o catador de caranguejo-uçá. Nos
acampamentos montados nos manguezais, os caiçaras dormem em
redes amarradas às árvores.
Pequenas vilas e povoados espalham-se à beira do rio e pelas
ilhas da redondeza, algumas ainda sem energia elétrica. Após navegar por alguns quilômetros, entre florestas e mangues, uma duna
surge de surpresa, e a areia branca se junta com a lama. A água é

“Sign of great sailing conditions,” says guide Mateus Portela,
a practicing kitesurfer for ten years. Less than an hour drive
to the exit of Porto dos Tatus, in Parnaíba, 213 miles from
Teresina, and we’re at the border between the land and the
sea: the mangrove swamp. In the company of herons and kingfishers, we proceed by boat towards the Parnaíba Delta, in the
north end of the state.
“Do you see that river right there in front? It’s the Parnaíba, the
imaginary line that separates Piauí from Maranhão,” explains
the guide. The Velho Monge (or “Old Monk”), as it’s known by
the natives, is the second biggest river in northeastern Brazil.
It begins in Serra do Jalapão and travels 1,056 miles before
flowing into the open sea. At its meeting point with the Atlantic
Ocean, it splits continuously into inlets, narrow streams and
islands, ranging from mid-sized to tiny, forming the only marine
delta in South America and one of the few in the world.
During the distance covered, it’s common to see fishermen
overcoming the strong current on their boats powered by
oars and sails. Another typical character of the region is the
mangrove crab. In the camps mounted in the mangrove swamp,
natives sleep in hammocks tied to the trees.
Small villages are spread on the river banks and in the
surrounding islands; some still with no electricity. After sailing

que se forma é uma mescla surpreendente de paisagens: mangue,
duna, praia deserta e mar.
REVOADA
Já próximos à barra da Caiçara, uma das cinco embocaduras do
Rio Parnaíba, os velejadores se preparam para colocar o kite na
água, e ali ficam até a tarde cair. A adrenalina bem que poderia
não ter fim, mas é chegada a hora da revoada dos guarás, quando
milhares de aves de coloração vermelho-pitanga, similares a um flamingo, voam em uníssono de uma margem do rio à outra. “Elas adquirem essa cor em virtude da alimentação à base de caranguejo”,
diz o guia. Estamos imóveis no meio do rio, motores do barco desligados, olhos fixos no coletivo de guarás que se avoluma, quando
de repente começa o show. Basta uma ave levantar voo e centenas
delas tingem de rosa o céu púrpura do delta. O espetáculo dura
menos de meio minuto, mas parece uma eternidade.
A manhã seguinte começa ao som dos bilros da Casa das Rendeiras, em Ilha Grande de Santa Isabel. A maior ilha do delta é
também um importante polo de confecção da delicada e complexa renda. Desde que seus pontos e formas fizeram parte do desfile de Walter Rodrigues na São Paulo Fashion Week, em 2002, as
rendeiras não param de trabalhar.
“Fizemos um mandrião para o batizado de Sofia, filha da atriz
Cláudia Raia, e até Dona Marisa, a ex-primeira-dama do Brasil, vestiu um modelo nosso durante a segunda posse de Lula”, conta Maria do Socorro Galleno, presidente da Associação das Rendeiras
do Morro da Mariana. Difícil ver o Rio Parnaíba e não ouvir o tilintar
dos bilros. É como dizem as rendeiras: onde há rede, há renda.

appears suddenly, and its white sands blend into the mud. The
water is lightly salty, a result of the mixture with the ocean. The
image that is formed is a surprising combination of sceneries:
mangrove swamp, dune, desert beach and sea.
FLOCK
Already near Barra da Caiçara, one of the Rio Parnaíba’s
five mouths, the sailors get ready to place their kites in the
water, and they stay there until the end of the afternoon. The
adrenaline might well go on forever, if not for the time of the
flock of scarlet ibises, when thousands of red-colored birds,
similar to flamingos, fly in unison from one edge of the river to
the other. “They get this color because their diet is mainly crab,”
says the guide. We are motionless in the middle of the river, the
boat’s motors turned off, eyes fixed on the gathering of scarlet
ibises that swells in numbers until, suddenly, the show begins.
All it takes is a single bird to take flight for hundred others to
follow suit, dying the purple delta sky pink. The spectacle lasts
less than half a minute, but it feels like eternity.
The next morning begins with the sounds of bobbins in
Casa das Rendeiras, on Ilha Grande de Santa Isabel. The
largest of the delta’s islands is also an important locale for the
production of the delicate and complex lace. Since its stitches
and shapes were used in Walter Rodrigues’s fashion show in
São Paulo Fashion Week, in 2002, the lace makers haven’t
stopped working.

No Carnaval, Barra Grande recebe o Barra Jazz e Blues
Festival, que acontece de 18 a 20 de fevereiro. Entre os
destaques estão músicos consagrados nacionalmente,
como o violinista cubano Omar Puente e os paulistas do
Blues Etílicos, além das bandas teresinenses Clínica Tobias
Blues e Mojo Band. O evento começa a esquentar a partir
das 15 horas no Bar das Ostras. Lá rola o Café com Música,
onde artistas dão uma canja de seus trabalhos e conversam
com o público. Enquanto isso, na praça e na rua principal
há projetos itinerantes, feira de artesanato e pequenas
“degustações” da Orquestra Sinfônica de Teresina. Depois
de 17h30, é apurar os ouvidos e migrar em meio aos blocos
de sujos para o palco principal à beira-mar. Diversão para
trio elétrico nenhum botar defeito.
During Carnaval, Barra Grande welcomes the Barra Jazz
and Blues Festival, which takes place between February
18th and 20th. Included among the attractions are
nationally renowned musicians like Cuban violinist Omar
Puente and the São Paulo band Blues Etílicos, as well as the
Teresina-based groups Clínica Tobias Blues and Mojo Band.
The event starts to heat up around 3 p.m. at Bar das Ostras.
The locale holds the Café com Música, where musicians
perform a little of their work and talk with the audience.
Meanwhile, at the city square and the main street, there are
itinerant projects, a handicraft fair and small “morsels” from
the Teresina Symphony Orchestra. After 5:30 p.m., it’s time
to fine-tune your ear drums and head for the main stage by
the sea. The fun of the trio elétricos has nothing on this.

como a “capital do delta”, a segunda maior
cidade do Piauí foi o principal entreposto
comercial da região nos séculos 18 e 19 e
grande exportadora de carnaúba — tida
até hoje como a árvore da vida, já que oferece uma infinidade de usos ao homem.
Naquela época, a cidade ainda era a Vila
de São João de Parnaíba, e o Piauí, a quarta maior economia do país. Hoje, com a
perspectiva da chegada de voos nacionais
em seu aeroporto, o turismo na cidade ganha fôlego redobrado.
No Centro Histórico, o Porto das Barcas
preserva casarios antigos e de arquitetura
colonial portuguesa. Ali, o melhor a fazer é
ficar em uma das mesinhas dos restaurantes e bares de suas ruelas e apreciar o fim
de tarde, quando o calor dá uma trégua.
Nada que um pôr do sol na praia de Pedra
do Sal, a única de Parnaíba, também não
resolva. Dizem os locais que é o melhor
ponto para apreciá-lo.
BARRA GRANDE DE CAJUEIRO

Association of Lace Makers. It’s hard to gaze at the Rio Parnaíba without hearing the
jingle of bobbins. As the lace makers say: “Where there’s lace, there’s income.”
From there, the trip continues on by car to Parnaíba, the gateway to Piauí’s
ecotourism. Also known as the “delta capital,” Piauí’s second biggest city was the
main commercial center of the region in the 18th and 19th centuries and a big exporter
of carnaúba palms — to this day known as the tree of life, as it provides mankind with
infinite uses. At that time, the city was known as Vila de São João de Parnaíba, and
Piauí was the country’s fourth largest economy. Nowadays, with the prospect of the
arrival of domestic flights to its airport, the city has seen its tourism gain new stamina.
In the historic city center, Porto das Barcas retains sets of old houses and colonial
Portuguese architecture. There, the best thing to do is to sit at a table at one of the
bars or restaurants in its small streets and enjoy the late afternoon, when the heat
lets up a little. There’s nothing like the sunset at the only beach in Parnaíba. The
locals say that it’s the best place to admire it.
BARRA GRANDE DE CAJUEIRO
Afternoon falls and the winds take us to the peak for kitesurfing: Barra Grande, in
Cajueiro da Praia, Piauí’s southern tip. Only 40 miles of coastline separate one end
from the other one. On the way there, pastoral scenes, like Lagoa do Portinho, closed
in by white sand dunes, fishermen working with their boats in Praia do Coqueiro, in
Luís Correia, and the curious combed tree, whose branches were dragged in one
direction by the wind.
“Have you ever tried cajuína?”, offered Ariosto Ibiapina, a doctor, owner of the
best beach inn and still a sailor at age 60. “This is handmade, something that
belongs to us,” he says, setting sail with his kite in the sea. Suddenly when we least
expect it, the sand is at our feet and we’re among boards, life jackets and surfers
from all over the world handling their kites. The nearly waveless sea, the constant
wind, the format of the beach, everything conspires to turn Barra Grande into a

Plump, unusual and docile, very docile. This is what manatees are like.
These mammals that have existed for millions of years were seen by the first
explorers to reach Brazil and now they run the serious risk of disappearing
forever. Because of their tail, which they use to swim, and their chant, ancient explorers associated them with mermaids.
In Piauí, there’s an important manatee population, which occupies the region from Praia do Coqueiro, in Luís Correia, to
the estuary of the Timonha and Ubatuba Rivers, nearby the Ceará border. In 1980, Project Manatee was created in order to
protect them from extinction. Since them, its staff has rescued 56 calves, cared for 72 animals and reintroduced 22 back into
the wild. They can reach up to between 10 and 13 feet in length and weigh between 900 and 1,000 pounds. “The sea manatee
is the most endangered water mammal in the country. That’s why it’s so important that the population be made aware in order
to preserve it,” explains Edivaldo Santos, the project’s monitor.

Roliço, inusitado e dócil, muito dócil. Assim é o peixe-boi, um
mamífero que existe há milhões de anos, foi visto pelos primeiros
navegadores que chegaram ao Brasil e corre sério risco de
desaparecer. Por causa da nadadeira caudal e do seu canto, os
antigos navegadores o associavam às sereias.
No Piauí, há uma importante população de peixes-boi, que ocupa
desde a Praia do Coqueiro, em Luís Correia, até o estuário dos rios
Timonha e Ubatuba, já na divisa com o Ceará. Para protegê-los da
extinção foi criado, em 1980, o Projeto Peixe-Boi. Ao longo desse tempo,
sua equipe resgatou 56 filhotes, manejou 72 animais e reintroduziu 22 na
natureza. Eles chegam a medir de 3,5 a 4 metros e pesam entre 400 e
450 quilos. “O peixe-boi-marinho é o mamífero aquático mais ameaçado
de extinção do país, por isso é tão importante conscientizar a população
para a sua preservação”, explica Edivaldo Santos, monitor do projeto.

a Lagoa do Portinho, cercada por dunas de areia
branquinha, pescadores lidando com seus barcos
na Praia do Coqueiro, em Luís Correia, e a curiosa árvore penteada, cujos galhos foram arrastados
pelo vento em uma só direção.
“Já experimentou a cajuína?”, ofereceu Ariosto
Ibiapina, médico, dono da melhor pousada da praia e
velejador ainda aos 60 anos. “Essa é artesanal, coisa
nossa”, diz ele, zarpando com sua pipa para o mar.
Quando menos percebemos estamos com os pés
na areia, em meio a pranchas, coletes e surfistas do
mundo todo manejando seus kites. O mar quase sem
ondas, o vento constante, o formato da praia, tudo
conspira para transformar Barra Grande em ponto de
encontro de aficionados pelo esporte.
É fim de tarde, e a maré cheia convida para a rota
do cavalo-marinho. O grupo de desbravadores do
mangue desce o rio até encostar o barco no chamado “berçário”, onde se concentram milhares deles.
Verdes, vermelhos, amarelos e até os raros pretos balançam na água. A diversão termina com um passeio
de carroça puxada por jegue pela praia. Ao longe,
restaurantes e lojas da ruela principal acendem suas
luzes e a vila ganha ares de roça chique.
Na manhã seguinte, partimos para a derradeira missão: encontrar o peixe-boi. O mamífero que come capim
no fundo do oceano é comum naquelas áreas, e muito
preservado. Estamos na torre de observação construída pelo Ibama no meio do Rio Timonha, a consideráveis
léguas da costa, no ponto exato onde o Piauí vira Ceará.
Lá do topo é possível acompanhar de perto o trabalho
feito pela equipe do Projeto Peixe-Boi. O mamífero não
apareceu, mas causou em todos a sensação de estarmos de mãos dadas com a natureza. E, enquanto tartarugas nos saudavam na água, o barqueiro-guia içava a
vela rumo ao fim da jornada piauiense.

It’s the end of the afternoon, and the high tide beckons us on a sea-horse
tour. A group of mangrove swamp explorers goes down the river and shore
their boat by the so-called “nursery,” where thousands of sea-horses are
concentrated. Green, red, yellow and even the rare black ones sway in the
water. The fun comes to an end with a ride on a donkey-pulled cart across
the beach. In the distance, the lights in the restaurants and shops on the
main street turn on, and the village takes on an air of rural chic.
The following morning we took off on our last mission: to find the
manatee. The mammal that eats the grass at the bottom of the ocean
is common in those areas, and well preserved. We’re in the observation
tower built by Ibama in the middle of the Rio Timonha, at a considerable
distance from the coast, at the exact point where Piauí becomes Ceará.
From the top, it’s possible to view the work done by the staff of the
Manatee Project. These mammals did not appear, but we all had the
sensation of being one with nature. And, while we were greeted by turtles
in the water, the boatman-guide hoisted the sail taking us to the end of
our journey in Piauí.
