Perfect Alanis Morissette
Sometimes is never quite enough
That simply wasn't good enough
If you're flawless*, then you'll win my love
To make us proud
Don't forget to win first place
I'll live through you
Don't forget to keep that smile on your face
I'll make you what I never was
Be a good boy
If you're the best, then maybe so am I (b)
Try a little harder
Compared to him compared to her
You've got to measure up
I'm doing this for your own damn good
And make me prouder*
You'll make up for what I blew
What's the problem... why are you crying?
How long before you screw it up
How many times do I have to tell you to hurry up (a)
Be a good boy
With everything I do for you
Push a little farther now
The least you can do is keep quiet
That wasn't fast enough
Be a good girl
You've gotta try a little harder
To make us happy
We'll love you just the way you are if you're perfect

05. (1,0) Read the text: Writer’s Story About Anorexia
When I was 14 years old, I became anorexic. I obsessed about my weight, thinking I was huge. I lost
weight, not by dieting (at least not on purpose,) but by not eating. I couldn't handle eating in front of
other people. I didn't want anyone to see me eat - weird, huh? I'd get up in the morning and eat nothing
for breakfast. I started drinking a lot of coffee - black, because milk and sugar had too many calories
for me to risk it. I'd drink coffee on my break and at lunch. After school, I would be so hungry I thought
I was going to pass out, so I'd have a bowl of soup broth. That was it for the day. Come dinner time, I
was full from the soup, so again, I ate nothing. I remember my parents freaking out, saying I was sick
and that I would end up in the hospital. And I kept saying "What's the issue, I just want to lose weight.
I'm so fat, I can afford to lose a few pounds." The truth is that despite looking in the mirror and seeing
a fat girl, I was 40lbs under weight. I'm better now, although I did have one relapse when I went to
college. If there is anything I can share with you it's this: your value as a person is not measured in
pounds, or reflected in the mirror. It is the sum of your thoughts and actions, and the contributions you
make (major or minor) to the world.

Many people who (1) ___________ up during the 1960s think it (2) __________ a very special time.
Before the 1960s most Americans used to believe that the American way was the best. People respected the

1960s.
The 1960s was the decade that (4) ___________ a difference. John Kennedy (5 ) ___________

But the 1960s was also the time of the Vietnam War. Many young people were very angry with the

The youth rebellion of the 1960s (9) __________ beyond politics. It questioned many of the values of
American society. This was the time of the “hippies”. The hippies were young people who had long hair, wore
strange, colorful clothes, and believed in peace. They were not interested in money, and many of them did
not (10) __________ with many of their parents’ ideas about life.
Many things changed in the 1960s. Some of them, such as hairstyles and clothing, were not very
important. Others, such as laws about the rights of African Americans and the relationship between men and
women, were very significant. And there is certainly no doubt about one thing: when the 1960s ended, the
United States was different, and the world was, too.

A few words about Stress
Stress is part of everyday life. We experience it in good times and bad. Traumatic events such as
serious illness, death, earthquakes, or wars all cause stress. However, positive changes in life can also be stressful.
(1) New relationships, new jobs, or a new baby can made someone feel "stressed out." Stress only
becomes a problem when it is unmanageable, when people can't control it.
While too much stress isn't healthy, reactions to stress can be helpful. (2)In fact, in prehistoric
times, stress helps people to survive, to stay alive. When our ancestors were in danger, certain changes in
their bodies prepared them either to fight or to flee, to run away. (3)Today this ''fight or flight" reaction
was still part of us. We react to stress in the 21st century, the same way our ancestors did.
Stress causes powerful hormones (adrenaline and cortisol) to move quickly through the body. The
hormones cause an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, blood sugar, and the need for oxygen. These are
the changes that help people get through stressful situations successfully. However, when stress is out of
control, the body's immune system suffers. This is a problem for many people. In fact, 75% to 90% of all
visits to the doctor are stress-related.
3
(4) Relaxation techniques help some people reduce stress. Deep breathing, muscle relaxation, and
meditation can actually decrease hormone levels in the blood and stop the stress reaction. Unfortunately,
some people think that relaxation techniques are no more than quackery. They ask their doctors for pills to
help them relax. Most doctors believe, however, that patients with stress-related problems can help
themselves by changing their diet (cutting down on sugar and caffeine) and increasing regular exercise.
Exercise helps both the body and the mind control stress.
While it's true that stress can have a negative effect on health, (5) it's also possible to manage stress
before it become a problem. If you know the physical and emotional symptoms of stress, then you can use
relaxation techniques or exercise before you feel "stressed out." Stress may be a big part of our lives, but
it doesn't have to control the way we live.
